Heritage
Our communities are steeped in history, from our Indigenous roots to the lifestyles of early settlers.

• Historic Sites • Cultural Centres • Festivals • Museums

Nestled in the heart of the serene Kawartha region, Buckhorn is steeped in history.
Founded in the late 1800s as Hall’s Bridge (named after settler John Hall), it became known as Buckhorn due to Mr. Hall’s penchant for deer hunting.
Today, this special place offers endless opportunities and experiences. Whether you’re headed for an outdoor adventure, visiting to explore arts and culture, or just relaxing by our clear lakes, once you see the beauty of the area and meet the wonderful people who live here, you will want to return time and again.
You can visit Vintage Buckhorn on Facebook to see some great photos of the area’s past.
We respectfully acknowledge that Trent Lakes is located on the Treaty 20 Mississauga territory and in the traditional territory of the Mississauga and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations which include: Alderville, Beausoleil, Curve Lake, Georgina Island, Hiawatha, Rama and Scugog Island First Nations.
We respectfully acknowledge that the Williams Treaty First Nations are the stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity, and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure their health and integrity for generations to come.

The Curve Lake Anishinaabe (Ojibway) community trace their origins to 1829 when a small band settled around Curve Lake and Mud Lake. The community officially became a reserve in 1837.
Curve Lake First Nation (CLFN) consists of a mainland peninsula and large island (Fox Island) on Buckhorn and Chemong Lakes. Curve Lake First Nation also coowns smaller islands located throughout the Trent Severn Waterway system. The total land base of the First Nation is approximately 900 hectares.
A visit to the annual Pow Wow in September will give you the opportunity to learn more about their traditions.
Established in 1988, Curve Lake Cultural Centre serves as a valuable resource for preserving traditions and ceremonies within the community. Visitors are encouraged to learn about this unique way of life, and immerse themselves in the history and culture of First Nations People.
Curve Lake First Nation people are the Michi Saagig or Mississaugas of the great Anishinaabe (uhnishi-nahbe) nation. The name Anishinaabe is derived from an-ish-aw, meaning “without cause” or “spontaneous”, and the word in-au-a-we-se, meaning “human-body”. This translates to mean “spontaneous man”.
