A proud Trent-Severn Trail Town, Bobcaygeon sits along the 386 km TrentSevern Waterway National Historic Site. Whether you arrive by boat, paddle, bike, or car, this renowned inland passageway leads you into a community with a personality all its own.

Unique for being built upon three islands joined by seven bridges, Bobcaygeon is nestled on a narrow strip of land between Pigeon and Sturgeon Lakes—two of the Kawarthas’ most stunning bodies of water.

We respectfully acknowledge that Bobcaygeon is located on Michi Saagiig (what is commonly referred to as Mississauga First Nations), Treaty 20 territory. Long before European and other settlers came to this area, these lands and waters were, and are today, the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations. This includes the Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island, Rama, Beausoleil, and Georgina Island First Nations.

We respectfully acknowledge that the Williams Treaties First Nations are the stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity, and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure the health and integrity of these lands and waters for generations to come.

Boaters must arrive to the designated blue line at least 30 minutes before closing time. At swing bridges, the last bridge swing will be 10 minutes after last lockage time.

NOTE: Lockstations are unstaffed after hours. Authorized visitors are asked to exercise caution. Unpermitted access to lockstations is prohibited between 10pm and 6am. For emergencies after hours, please call 911 for police, fire, ambulance. Please check with Parks Canada at 1-888-773-8888 to confirm dates and times.

Lock 32: The Gateway to Bobcaygeon’s History

The story of Bobcaygeon is inseparable from the Trent-Severn Waterway. In 1832, the government of Upper Canada constructed the very first lock in what would eventually become a massive 386-kilometre engineering marvel connecting Lake Ontario to Lake Huron.

Today, Lock 32 is more than a piece of history; it’s a favorite gathering spot. It’s a treat for the whole family to find a seat on the grass and watch the boats navigate the system, marveling at the historic swing bridge as it pivots to let vessels pass. It’s a peaceful, fascinating window into the “island life” that makes Bobcaygeon so special.

150 YEARS YOUNG

Bobcaygeon’s settlement history began in 1833 when Thomas Need arrived at the narrows between Pigeon and Sturgeon Lakes. Need surveyed the original village plot and established the first store and sawmill, laying the groundwork for a

community that would soon blossom. By 1857, the village had grown to 150 inhabitants, but the true catalyst for expansion was the rise of the lumbering empire led by Mossom Boyd and his sons. Taking over Need’s business upon his return to England, the Boyds became the architects of modern Bobcaygeon. Their influence touched every corner of the region: they formed the Trent Navigation

Company, pioneered local cattle ranching, and were instrumental in bringing the railway and the Trent-Severn Waterway to life.

Mossom Boyd served as the village’s first postmaster and was a prolific builder of the heritage structures you see today. To support his ever-growing workforce, he famously gifted land for the construction of local churches. This rapid industrial and social development culminated in 1876, when Bobcaygeon was officially incorporated as a village.

The town has many old buildings, including the former site of the Hunter House/Front & Main Apartments.

Today, it is a popular tourist destination known for its rich history, charming downtown, and position as a gateway to the Kawartha Lakes.

Why not blend a scenic countryside drive with some local art? The 41st Annual Victoria County Studio Tour is a free, self driving art tour taking place on September 26 to 27 and October 3 to 4. Studios are open from 10am to 5pm.
