For nature lovers, there are many trails and routes as well as Ontario’s largest park south of Algonquin – Kawartha Highlands Signature Site.

A community that gives respect to its past, Buckhorn was once home to many settlers and workers in the sawmill industry. Today, you can still find remnants of the logging throughout our lakes and rivers that brought them here.

Located at Lock 31 on the Trent Severn Waterway, you will find a hidden gem in the heart of the Kawarthas called Buckhorn. From our origins back in the 1800s to the forward-thinking community we are today, we are very proud of our historical and cultural heritage. It resonates in our fine arts and culture, scenic attractions and family events.

We have all the essentials for a great vacation in our area like tea rooms, restaurants, shops, bakers, catering, marinas, fine art galleries, and awardwinning winery, B&B’s and amazing resorts.

Surrounded by lakes, rivers and trails, summer is our busiest time of year.

Cottagers come up for their vacation, boaters travel through our lock and anglers come to catch fish from our fresh waters. Summer isn’t our only attractive season, though. With wellgroomed snowmobile trails, skating on the Buckhorn Sports Pad or on the lake, ice fishing, snow shoeing and much more, winter is a popular season as well.

Embark on an aquatic adventure in the Buckhorn area.

Our lakes and rivers boast stunning sights that rival any in the world. Experience the unique thrill of living on the water aboard a houseboat for a few days or even weeks.

Take in the breathtaking views from the deck as you cruise along the Waterway, stopping in different communities for lunch and nightlife. Whether you’re seeking solitude or bringing loved ones along, the memories made will be cherished for a lifetime.

For those who enjoy canoeing and kayaking, the Buckhorn area is a haven. Paddle along the shoreline at sunrise or sunset to observe birds and wildlife in their natural habitat. Many resorts offer watercraft rentals or include them in vacation packages.

Delve beneath the surface while diving in the area to dwiscover relics from the past, providing a glimpse into the region’s history. Seek recommendations from the Welcome Centre for must-see underwater sites.

FISHING

Fishing is a beloved pastime in the Buckhorn area, with our lakes teeming with walleye, pickerel, bass, and various sunfish species. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, spending a day on the water casting your line is a fantastic way to pass the time. Many resorts offer boat rentals, and there are numerous fishing charters in the area for those looking for a guided experience.

Ontario Family Fishing Events provide a unique opportunity for Canadian residents to enjoy fishing in Ontario waters without needing the usual fishing version of the outdoors card. In 2024, there are three times --- Mother’s Day Weekend (May 11/12), Father’s Day Weekend (June 15-16) and Family Fishing Week from June 29 to July 7.

The Buckhorn District Lion’s Club also hosts a Kids’ Fishing Derby on June 23 at Blue Heron Resort.

TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY At the heart of the town lies Lock 31, one of the busiest locks on the TrentSevern Waterway. To cater to the needs of overnight guests, power posts are

conveniently located along the mooring wall, providing essential amenities for boaters.

Since its opening in 1887, Lock 31 has served as a vital link between Upper Buckhorn Lake and Lower Buckhorn Lake, with picturesque bridges spanning the connecting channel.

RESPECT FOR INDIGENOUS ROOTS

We respectfully acknowledge that Buckhorn is located on the Treaty 20 Michi Saagiig territory and in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nation, which include: Alderville, Beausoleil, Curve Lake, Georgina Island, Hiawatha, Rama and Scugog Island First Nations.

Curve Lake First Nation territory consists of a mainland peninsula and large island (Fox Island) on Buckhorn and Chemong Lake. Curve Lake First Nation

also co-owns smaller islands located throughout the Trent Severn Waterway system. The total land base of the First Nation is approximately 900 hectares.

For those interested in learning more about our Indigenous roots, a visit to Curve Lake First Nation should be on your agenda. In addition to events held throughout the year at the Whetung Ojibwa Centre, the Curve Lake Pow Wow, September 21 and 22, 2024 is an annual event that draws visitors from across North America. Traditional in every way, the Pow Wow features song and dance and story and regalia, food and sights and sounds.

“Curve Lake First Nation people are the Mississaugas of the great Anishnaabeg (uhnish-nahbe) nation. We are the traditional people of the North shore of Lake Ontario and its tributaries; this has been Mississauga territory since time immemorial.” (excerpt from Curve Lake First Nation website)

HERITAGE

The Buckhorn area is steeped in history.

The Curve Lake Anishinaabe (Ojibway) community traces their origins to 1829 when a small band settled around Curve Lake and Mud Lake. The community officially became a reserve in 1837. You can trace the roots of the Indigenous People with a visit to the Curve Lake Cultural Centre, or attend their annual Pow Wow in September.

Buckhorn has a rich heritage as a former home to settlers and sawmill workers.

The remnants of this past are still visible in the lakes and rivers that surround the town, serving as a reminder of the area's pioneering roots.

Throughout the area, you can see the majestic granite rocks and tall trees that make this one of Mother Nature's

splendours. Visit Adam & Eve Rocks in Buckhorn, two huge granite boulders left behind by the glaciers and Council Rock, which sits precariously tilted near the bridge.

Buckhorn is proud to be part of the Trent-Severn Trail Town Program, a collaborative effort between Kawarthas Northumberland, Parks Canada, and local municipalities, aims to connect communities, celebrate heritage, welcome visitors, and showcase the beauty of the region.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

The Buckhorn region is graced with stunning natural beauty.

Visitors can take part in a variety of outdoor activities such as ATV-ing, hiking, biking, and snowmobiling on scenic trails.

Just a short distance north of Buckhorn lies the Kawartha Highlands Signature Site, home to a picturesque 1.5km hiking trail alongside the Mississauga River.

The breathtaking views along the trail showcase some of the most remarkable scenery in the Kawarthas. The interpretive trail provides insight into the river's history,

its significance in the area's settlement, and the rich heritage of Buckhorn.

Sandy Lake boasts one of the finest beaches in the Kawarthas, offering a serene escape surrounded by lush countryside.

The crystal-clear waters of Sandy Lake resemble a Caribbean paradise, thanks to the limestone bottom. While there are no lifeguards on duty, amenities like parking and portable toilets are available.

For golf enthusiasts, Buckhorn offers a selection of top-notch courses that harmonize with the natural terrain.

Whether you prefer a relaxing 9-hole round or a more challenging 18-hole adventure, Buckhorn has something for every golfer.

In the winter months, the region transforms into a snowy wonderland with miles of groomed trails for snowmobilers. And many trails are open for winter hikes through the beautiful snow-covered ground.

In 2023, the Municipality of Trent Lakes erected an accessible children's play area in Ode’naang Park , located beside the Trent Canal in “downtown” Buckhorn.

The park is also the perfect spot for your picnic lunch or to sit on the bench and watch the boats go into the Lock.

named one of the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario and goes into its 47th year. Showcasing the work of artists from across Canada, the Festival is renowned for not only the quality of work shown, but also bringing the art world closer to audiences of all ages. The event runs at the Buckhorn Community Centre from August 17 to 19. Admission is by donation. www.buckhornartfestival.ca.

Back for its 35th year bringing fine art to the Kawarthas, the Kawartha Arts Festival showcases close to a hundred artists from the Kawarthas and beyond across many mediums such as paint, pen, metal, wood, stone, pottery and cloth. The Festival generally brings in up to 5,000 visitors over the Saturday and Sunday of Labour Day weekend in beautiful Fenelon Falls.

Admission is free, so bring the family, and enjoy live music and fine art at the Fenelon Fairgrounds 27 Veterans Way. For those interested in exploring the art community further, studio tours are available throughout the area, typically during the summer and fall months. These tours offer a glimpse into the lives and workspaces of the local artists, providing a unique opportunity to see where and how they create their masterpieces.

If you’re looking for musical entertainment, there are some choices that will put a smile on your face and a song in your heart. At Lock 31 in Buckhorn on Tuesday nights during July and August, the Buckhorn District Lions Club hosts performances by local artists. And every Thursday in the summer, a short drive to Bobcaygeon’s Lock 32 will take you to Concerts in the Park hosted by the Bobcaygeon Music Council.

Just a short drive down into Peterborough on Wednesday and Saturday nights, you can hit MusicFest at Del Crary Park and, of course, our restaurants host talented musicians, jam nights and karaoke.

SITES OF INTEREST PETROGLYPHS PROVINCIAL PARK

Located just 30 minutes from Buckhorn, the Petroglyphs Provincial Park has the largest known concentration of Indigenous rock carvings (petroglyphs) in Canada, depicting turtles, snakes, birds, humans and more.

This sacred site is known as “The Teaching Rocks”.

The location of the site was kept hidden from non-First Nation people until 1954, when it was rediscovered accidentally by a prospector. Visit www.ontarioparks.com/park/petroglyphs

BURLEIGH FALLS

The Falls are created by a narrowing in the flow of water between Lovesick Lake and Lower Buckhorn Lake on the west and Stoney Lake to the east. It’s a beautiful sight to see, but also popular with kayakers and divers.

WOLF ISLAND PROVINCIAL PARK

Paleozoic limestone outcroppings rub shoulders with much older, Precambrian bedrock on this island, which is only accessible by boat. Visitors may park and launch a boat from Lock #28 in Burleigh Falls (fees may be applicable).

Wolf Island is west of the launch approximately 5km.

The original house was built in 1905 as a private residence. In 1921 it was converted into a hotel and re-named The Windsor House. Many of the workers in the lumber industry came to Buckhorn and stayed at The Windsor House. It was then purchased in the 1970s by Francis Cody, who named it Cody Inn. In 2000 it was turned into a restaurant, under the same name.
