I attended the Global Wellness Summit in Italy last fall, and have been thinking about what wellness really means in our time. I heard many speakers including an architect talking about the effect of visual surroundings on our well-being, to a mind-body expert on the impact of meditation on wellness, but it occurred to me that wellness today is about human connection. In real life, we don’t actually have 300 friends.

And those DMs or texts don’t make up for something more meaningful. This has made me realize how lucky I am to be in our community of people – the beauty industry, and specifically the professional side of it– where we connect daily with our clients, whether through the touch of a facial, listening to what’s going on in their lives or helping them become the best version of themselves. The theme of this issue is “connection” and we explore the physical link between our skin and the rest of the body and celebrate the legacy of Biologique Recherche’s unique methodology.

Colette Yeomans is the founder of Clarité Wellness, located on Vancouver's Granville Island, specializing in holistic skin care and has taken the field of aesthetics – and connection – to another level through her use of etiotherapy.

Etiotherapy recognizes that stress and trauma can affect all the organs of the body, especially our skin. Bringing awareness to these causation factors can lead to the healing of psychological and physiological imbalance. Colette's techniques help reveal the root cause of that imbalance – as she puts it "that which our conscious minds are unaware of” – to help release stress and improve both physical and mental well-being. Not only will your skin look visibly improved, you will feel released, lighter, and more connected to yourself. This is not your average facial. And it's no wonder that she has an 8-month waiting list. We recently spoke to Colette to get a better understanding of the connection between our skin and psychological wellness.

Mariam White: How do you explain etiotherapy and its connection to skin care?

Colette Yeomans: “Etio” means root or to identify the cause of a problem and this enables us to identify an issue and process it. It's easy for an esthetician to say you have a digestive issue, but my interest is why specifically it is happening, which can be the result of recent or familial trauma that has overloaded the client. By making this connection during our treatments we are able to release or process these issues in a safe way that ultimately leads to an improvement in their overall wellness and appearance. While I pull from traditional Chinese medicine and aspects of this therapy in my holistic facial treatments, etiotherapy itself is booked as a separate appointment.

M: How do you break this down to the

cellular level?

C: What Eastern cultures have known forever is that the cell holds information for seven generations. So when we talk about the cell being able to receive information, events like trauma or abuse are stored somewhere in the body and it can take generations to even start processing this. So, what I focus on is holding space to process stagnation and helping to release these blocks. Trauma can be as simple as having to move when you are a child or a bad breakup in your teens. We generally don’t take time to look at how this can effect us and it often surprises people when I point out how it’s expressed itself in the skin. When the block is processed the skin changes, it’s fascinating.

M: What is it about your use of intuition

that enables you to create a connection

with your clients?

C: I was afraid to show my intuition for a long time, but understanding how the body perceives information is quite logical. Wherever I am in the world training with other esthetician’s everyone identifies with some level of intuition. There’s just a connection that comes from having your hands on someone, you just know things and it doesn't mean you immediately recognize their traumatic past or their story but we can read the skin in an interesting way.

M: What does the brain-skin connection

mean to you and how do you incorporate this in into your facial?

C: We know for the skin to heal the body needs to be in a rest and digest state.

When you do proper lymphatic drainage massage the body goes into a parasympathetic state and often the brain can go into a theta allowing deep relaxation and regeneration to occur in the skin. This also allows for better product penetration and absorption. The brain, the body and the skin are not separate, everything shows on the face. It’s our willingness to hold space for the story and digest it that brings lasting changes to the skin. This can be done through yoga, meditation or even intentionally listening to your body and mind while simply walking around.

Estheticians should never talk about trauma or assume they know something if they don’t. Etiotherapy is a separate treatment that people sign up for when they are ready to go deep. For an esthetician in a facial there’s no need to start rambling too much, that’s not why they are there, but an awareness and empathy while touching the skin can go far.

UK-based tanning expert James Read leads a very full and busy life of travel, brainstorming new products, and finding the best vegan burger in every city he travels to. As the founder of James Read Tan, his mission is to change the world’s perception of tanning. And based on how his products work, his star-studded client list, and how he successfully combines the benefits of luxury skincare with a natural golden tan, it’s no wonder he is recognized as the top tan influencer. We peaked inside James’ iCal to find out what a typical day looks like for this tanning ambassador.

7:00am A morning coffee to start the day.

Once I have a coffee my creative mind starts working and I check my emails and do a social media scan. I follow a lot of people including Charlotte Tilbury, Josh Wood, Sophy Robson, Sarah Chapman, Adam Reed, and of course The Principle Brands.

2:00pm I spend a lot of the afternoon meeting media and influencers for tanning demos to keep me on my toes. Not only does this get our brand attention, I can get valuable feedback on what they and their followers are looking for.

9:30am Brain storm session with our team in Wales to work on new products for the coming year. We do our best to create products that represent our brand values of easy to use products. I’m living right now for the launch of our new Sleep Mask Tan with Retinol this year.

5:00pm A quick change and then out for drinks with our brand manager to work on the social media plan for the following week.

Biologique Recherche’s popularity amongst the world’s top skin care therapists has taken the brand from beauty’s best kept secret to a cult-like following that globally commands wait lists for its highly coveted and effective products. While it may seem like a new brand to some, their longevity is here to stay as they continue to write a unique and visionary page in the history of high-end personalized skin care.

Founded in Paris by husband and wife team Yvan and Josette Allouche, a biologist and a physiotherapist, they developed a unique methodology for professionals who were dissatisfied with existing products and traditional facials. Over forty years later their approach to beauty care is the same today as it was when it started: investing in their core values, education and product development, and using only intentionally pure, concentrated, raw ingredients. And they remain a family business, with Yvan’s son Philippe, a doctor, reinforcing their holistic approach, viewing the skin as an organ directly interconnected to all the other vital body functions. We spoke with co-owner and CEO, Pierre-Louis Delapalme, about the brand’s longevity and celebrating 5 years in Canada.

What is the most positive part of being so popular today, and how do you maintain your cult status? We are of course proudly investing in training and research, developing our partnerships in a very selective way will remain our focus.

BR is often the industry contrarian, why has this worked over the years? Probably because we never look at competition and what the industry is doing, but always focus on consumer needs, feed-back from our business partners, and sound scientific research findings.

Now that you are in over 70 countries, how do you maintain the family feel to your brand? We, business owners, and our export team, are spending 2/3 of our time in countries visiting and connecting with customers, and we organize regional meetings more than 8 times per year. Keeping the relationship alive, in a physical way, is key for us.

What makes BR so social media and editorial friendly?

Probably the fact that there is a real, long and passionate story underpinning Biologique Recherche. It remains an independently owned family business, and we have great customer “skin instant” stories to share.

It has been over 10 years since you purchased the business, what has been the biggest challenge from your growth?

Where will the brand be in another 10 years? The biggest challenge was to take enough time to fully understand the brand, its DNA before building growth plans, and finding the right people to build the growth! In 10 years, we only hope to be better at what we do.
