MEET MARIAM Living Beauty was created especially for people who care about taking care.

When you fill your life with the people, values, objects and places that you care about—whether that’s the book you reread every few years, your favourite hole-in-the-wall restaurant or the yourlips-but-better lipstick you have in multiples—you tend to feel like the best version of yourself. It’s this outlook that informs everything we do at Living Beauty, a multifaceted beauty discovery and distribution company.

When I founded Living Beauty, my goal was simple: to unite the best beauty brands from around the world in one place.

In a cold climate like Canada’s, body care can be all too easy to overlook, but Hawksley says it’s important to give all of our skin the same level of attention as we do our face. “The skin, as you know, is the biggest organ on the body, but also the first line of defense against all sorts of environmental aggressors. Maintaining the skin barrier is very, very important,” Hawksley says. “It’s really good not only for your physical wellbeing, but for your spiritual and mental wellbeing, to take that time just to stop and focus on yourself and listen to what your body needs.” ↳

ADIPEAU They say if something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well, and that’s never been truer than at skincare brand Adipeau. Fact or Fiction?

IF IT BURNS, IT MEANS IT’S WORKING.

With so much information (and misinformation) about skincare out there, it’s easy to get confused about what’s fact and what’s fiction. Laure Bouscharain, head of the R&D department at Biologique Recherche, gets to the bottom of some of the most common beauty myths.

Stimulation by active ingredients, such as fruit acids, can actually be detected by the skin as aggressors. This stimulates the strengthening of the skin barrier, which is a good thing. But these mediators also activate the skin’s defence system and a slight temporary inflammation may occur. That said, if the skin burns, becomes very red and itches, this is not good and should not be allowed to happen on a chronic basis. There are, however, cases where burning is beneficial, like peels done at intervals and controlled by a professional.

First off, you have to be able to identify the smell. A product whose oils are oxidising will smell rancid, which is not good for the skin. A bad smell can also be caused by biological contamination, which means the product is off. But a product can also have a strong smell because it contains a lot of active ingredients, like concentrated plant extracts, which have a very strong odour. A rose extract, for example, will not smell like rose petals but rather like crushed leaves. At Biologique Recherche, we use a lot of highly concentrated plant extracts as well as yeast extract which has a very strong aroma.

INGREDIENTS CAN BE TOXIC. Fiction

The regulation of cosmetic ingredients is very demanding, monitored and evolving. There is a list of ingredients that may be used with maximum concentrations, and all cosmetic products are required to follow the regulations in force in the country where they are sold. Plus, precautionary principles are applied when there is not enough data on an ingredient.

MILK CLEANSERS AREN’T GOOD FOR OILY SKIN. Fiction

On the contrary: using a milk cleanser will help to clean the skin while regulating sebum production. Seborrheic skin contains many impurities and the best way to eliminate them is to dissolve them in a lipophilic component like milk. Moreover, milk is a gentle cleanser. An aggressive cleanser will further dry out the skin, which will produce even more sebum to protect itself. 

Fiction

It can take time before results are visible on the surface of the skin. On average, it takes 56 days to start seeing results on the appearance of pigmentation spots. Giving the skin time to settle is the best way to keep it healthy.

Q. I WANT TO SPICE THINGS UP IN THE BEDROOM. IS THERE A RIGHT WAY TO INTRODUCE TOYS TO MY PARTNER? —Feeling Playful

The first step is communicating with your partner about your interests, and then inquiring about theirs. Leading with curiosity, rather than a complaint, is usually an ideal way to begin and helps your partner stay present and open instead of getting shut down and defensive. For example, if you say something like, “I’m interested in bringing some toys in the bedroom, just to spice things up a bit. I love _______ about our sex life but think adding a toy could make it even more fun. I’m curious what you think.” There’s no one right or best introductory toy for everyone—everybody is different, and it’s really about figuring out what you like. You may love vaginal penetration, which means finding an insertable toy, but your partner might prefer clitoral stimulation or anal play, in which case you’ll be exploring vibrators or anal plugs, perhaps. Couples’ vibrators are also a great option because they allow you to experience a mutual pleasure.

Oftentimes people get really excited from seeing their partner experience pleasure, so this checks all the boxes.

Things to look for in a couples’ vibrator include a product that is easy to use, comfortable, and stays in place. Dame’s Eva is a great hands-free vibe that stays exactly where it should, so your hands are able to offer other sensations to usher in even more pleasure!

Q. HOW CAN I EXPLORE MY G SPOT WITH A VIBRATOR? —New Sensations

A.

Before any exploration begins, it’s important to create arousal or—even better—use some lube to ensure you won’t experience discomfort due to dryness. I often advise my clients to begin G spot exploration with their fingers rather than a toy, just so they have a chance to properly locate it and gently try different types of touch. The G spot is located approximately two to three inches up, towards your belly button, on the anterior vaginal wall. It will feel like a dime-sized rough spot, like the roof of your mouth. For some people with vaginas, stimulating this spot feels great and can even lead to intense pleasure, but for others, it doesn’t offer pleasure and can actually make them feel like they need to urinate. Both of these experiences with the G spot are entirely normal! If you like G-spot play, go for it.
