As we settle into this new version of life as we know it, we have a very real opportunity to reimagine the role beauty plays in our lives. What has become clearer than ever is the fact that beauty should always start with the individual—their needs, wants and desires— and that skin-care is anything but superficial. It’s a matter of personal health and something to value.

For our second issue of Living Beauty Inc. Journal, we wanted to explore both ends of the beauty spectrum: from skincare so customized it caters to your unique DNA to mass products designed to be used by anyone and everyone. More importantly, we considered the value inherent in both—when they’re done well, of course. The power of a truly customized beauty regimen, which no doubt includes mass products, is that this intentional 360-degree approach goes well beyond topical treatments to factor in a person’s lifestyle, physical, mental and emotional abilities and aesthetic preferences.

This summer, I took my first business trip since 2020 to visit our clients in British Columbia. It was so refreshing to get away and reconnect. It reminded me of the joy that beauty professionals bring to our lives through their expertise and care and the intimacy of the relationships we have with them.

Like our most treasured relationships, beauty is dynamic and ever expanding. That’s what makes us Living Beauty Inc.

Hitting its peak around 2018, with start-ups taking the lead and several global brands following suit, the trend seems to have been born out of an industry shift away from a one-size-fits-all marketplace and the consumer’s growing desire for not only more choice but also individuality.

The concept works just fine for makeup, but when it comes to skincare, it tends to fall short. That’s because companies that market “bespoke” skincare products often formulate them in a very general way, providing a standard base of serum or moisturizer and then adding ingredients based on the consumer’s concern, whether it’s fine lines, oiliness or pigmentation. This approach also typically classifies skin into traditional types like dry or combination. “It’s just not that simple,” says Colette Yeomans, certified medical aesthetician and founder of Clarité Wellness in Vancouver. “The standard way we look at skincare from a consumer standpoint is too generic.”

One of the biggest trends to emerge in the beauty industry over the past few years is customization, where a product is personalized for an individual consumer.

This ranges from mixing your own lipstick or foundation shade to choosing colours for a palette.

“A proper skin diagnosis will make sure my client is well aware of their skin conditions. Sometimes, they think their skin is dry but it’s actually oily and we have to educate them.”

To tailor her services, Yeomans works with French professional skincare brand Biologique Recherche, which based its entire methodology on personalized treatments and products back when it launched in the ’70s. Skin is not viewed by type but what is referred to as the Skin Instant. “We look more at how the skin is at the time that we see it because it’s a huge organ that changes rapidly and adapts to its environment,” says Tania Miller, international trainer at Biologique Recherche. “If a client comes in in the morning, her skin may change by the evening.”

To get the full scope of the client’s skin, the aesthetician also takes into account the client’s age, lifestyle, occupation, if they smoke and how much sleep they get. “This gives us a clear idea of what problems the skin may be facing on a daily basis,” says Miller. “We need that information to give our clients a customized treatment as well as customize our products to them.”

It’s this holistic view that enables a professional to understand why a skin issue is occurring and decide how to best resolve it. Take pigmentation, for example. “I’d be looking at, ‘What kind of pigment are we dealing with?’” says Yeomans. “There’s hormonal pigmentation. There’s pigmentation from the sun.

And then there’s a liver/gallbladder style stagnation, pigmentation. And, surprisingly, all of these are treated quite differently,” she says, adding that this is why a resurfacing agent is not going to be the solution for all types of pigment.

This thorough approach is why truly customized skincare is best guided by an aesthetician’s educated, experienced eye. “When we can identify why there’s a deficiency in lipids or why there’s an imbalance in oil, then we can really start to target

what needs to be done and which products are going to be correct,” says Yeomans. It’s also why Biologique Recherche recommends that clients buy their products only after a consultation. “Without direction from a professional or somebody who’s capable of looking at you uniquely, you’re wasting your money,” she says. But you also want to do so without overwhelming the client. “When taking care of a client, we inquire as to what their concerns are in order to best develop an in-clinic treatment program and an at-home skincare ritual that will support their objective as well as respect their budget,” adds Suzie Rousseau, owner of pH Santé Beauté in Montreal.

Keeping a client’s priorities in mind is also essential when tailoring the results of injectables. “It’s really about listening to how a patient sees their own reflection and how we can approach that,” says Amy Newman Brown, aesthetic director of Toronto Plastic Surgery. “You really want to understand what the patient is looking for. You have to be able to adjust in order to offer them the aesthetic they’re after because there are so many nuances with injectables.”

The next frontier of skincare customization is genetics. Soon to be launched globally, Biologique Recherche’s My Beauty DNA uses a swab of saliva to analyze a client’s genetic code, revealing positive genes (ones that protect the skin barrier from such things as pollution, inflammation) and risky genes (such as damage to collagen). “Then we will have an idea of how things may change for a client,” says Miller. The results can also be sent to Biologique Recherche’s head office in Paris, where a cream or serum is ordered for that client as part of the Haute Couture program.. “It really is mind-blowing,” says Miller.

As beauty products become more inclusive, so do the spaces where we enjoy and offer professional treatments. According to Haley Rae Dinnall-Atkinson, intermediate accessibility specialist at Human Space, a division of Toronto architecture, design and urbanism practice BDP Quadrangle, creating an inclusive, accessible spa or salon should be a collaborative, equitable process that considers the wellbeing of both clients and staff.

“Designers should collaborate with end-users, such as clients and staff, and actively include and learn from individuals with a range of perspectives including intersectional identities like race, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation and especially persons with disabilities,” she says. She explains that it’s important that clients and staff feel welcome to bring their whole selves — emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually — and experience a sense of belonging at spas and salons. This goes as far as aesthetic considerations like decorating with warm colours such as red, orange and yellow, which are easier to perceive than cool colours, and using matte floor, wall and ceiling surfaces to reduce glare.

Design can also be used to help protect spa and salon staff. A ventilation system, for example, can aid individuals who may have compromised circulatory systems and fragrance sensitivities. To protect from long-term injuries, furniture and equipment should be accessible, adaptable and ergonomic, with options for people of all sizes, heights and mobility levels.

“A variety of furniture and equipment is more inclusive and helps to create spaces for all,” says Dinnall-Atkinson.

Inclusivity has been at the forefront of beauty ever since, but when it comes to real, sustained change, the industry is still a work-in-progress. As the needs of deeper skin tones get addressed in makeup, other categories, like skincare and sun protection, still fall short. While sunscreen formulations have improved and promise better protection, they’re not always cosmetically pleasing, says Dr. Renee A. Beach, a Toronto-based dermatologist. Deeper skin tones, in particular, have had to grapple with issues like a white cast from mineral-based sunscreens.

Having limited options is one of the reasons why sunscreens are purchased less by women of colour.

Inclusivity in skincare also means creating products that serve the needs of all people. “I hope we see formulations that are designed to enhance and meet the needs of skin types—like dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin and combination skin—and that are fashionable for and cosmetically pleasing across skin tones,” says Dr. Beach.

When it comes to formulating products, there are certain skin types and conditions that have traditionally been left out by skincare brands. In 1979, Dr. Vermén M. Verallo-Rowell, a dermatologist and dermatopathologist, founded VMV Hypoallergenics for people with sensitive skin. The brand was created in response to the increased number of patients at her practice who were reacting to the cosmetic products they were using. “From the very beginning, my mom wanted to make products that address allergic contact dermatitis and skin conditions that are affected by it, like atopic dermatitis,” says Laura Verallo de Bertotto, Verallo-Rowell’s daughter and the CEO of VMV Hypoallergenics. “We don’t make products for a demographic, a market, a gender or a race. We make them for skin conditions.”

Sensitive skin has traditionally been considered a niche category, which explains why skincare brands haven’t always catered its needs in the past, says Verallo de Bertotto. Other deterrents: Sensitive skin products simply aren’t sexy, and they are costly to make. On the other hand, it’s a category that’s growing. “As markets welcome more cosmetics, the instances of allergies rise,” says Verallo de Bertotto.

And COVID has also done a number on a lot of people.” In addition, topics like fungal acne and the phenomenon of “maskne” are being widely discussed as more people look to repair their skin. She sees it as a good thing because it’s also forcing brands to start paying more attention.

The pandemic has made skincare more important than ever before, agrees retail industry expert Farla Efros, president of HRC Advisory: “We have more time to take care of our skin and we want to.”

Efros believes that skincare brands can learn from haircare, which has become a leader in inclusivity by addressing the needs of a variety of hair textures and concerns through both products and marketing.

more diverse range of products. The brand’s H2O Tan Drops, for example, fit seamlessly into a beauty routine that you don’t want to compromise. The buildable aspect appeals to a wider group of people who might have specific preferences. “You’re not changing your skincare routine; you’re enhancing it,” says Read. “You pick the glow you want. It’s a product for everyone.”

The desire for inclusivity has also given rise to gender-neutral products. Their products once separated into his-and hers categories, brands are now doing away with gendered skincare. Biologique Recherche, for example, is known for its genderless approach.There’s a similar trend in traditionally female-focused makeup where brands, don’t market their cosmetics—or any of its products, for that matter— to a particular gender.

Another overlooked demographic is people with disabilities and limited mobility. Product developers are beginning to reimagine basic essentials—like deodorant that can be opened with one hand—and designing user-friendly tools—like makeup brushes for those with limited hand ability.

The way in which products are marketed is also evolving. Ad campaigns may be more diverse than ever before, but there’s a long way to go when it comes to celebrating the spectrum of differences that exist, whether it’s skin tones, hair textures, age, acne and body shape or size or dental diversity. Take plus-size representation, which can still be more diverse with regard to body sizes, shapes and even faces.

Language matters too, as words are a powerful marketing tool that can have a lasting impact. Efros sees progress being made with brands using inclusive wording but adds that they need to “follow it up with products that satisfy that marketplace.”

As consumers demand real, genuine inclusivity, the beauty industry continues to evolve. “In many ways, there’s still a clear and demonstrated unmet need,” says Dr. Beach.

The prevalence of sensitive skin has risen dramatically over the past decade, afflicting as many as 70 percent of women and 60 percent of men.
