The Montvale 14U softball team completed a remarkable sweep July 30, outlasting Emerson 8-3 in an 11-inning Kinderkamack Softball League championship game to secure its third title of the year.

The Mustangs had already captured the middle school and KSL spring championships.

Their summer title completed the triple crown for a group that saved some of its best softball for the postseason.

Montvale entered the summer playoffs as the No. 3 seed after a 6-4 regular season. Led

Nilene Evans was newly retired in spring 2016 and looking for a way to put her skills and experience back to work.

Then she saw Charles “Chip” Giamo in the newspaper.

A May 16, 2016, profile in The Record featured Giamo, a longtime volunteer with Bergen County Court Appointed Special Advocates, explaining what it meant to be the one person assigned specifically to look out for a childʼs best interests while that child moved through the foster-care system.

Children might change therapists, schools, foster homes, caseworkers and attorneys, Giamo told the newspaper.

“Thereʼs only one person that constantly moves with them — the CASA volunteer.”

For Evans, a Township of Washington resident and retired corporate securities lawyer, the story landed at exactly the right moment.

PARK RIDGE—Standing just off the firehouse on Wednesday with one of Park Ridgeʼs massive municipal water tanks behind him, Rep. Josh Gottheimer pointed to the boroughʼs water system as both essential infrastructure and an example of what communities increasingly must protect from cyberattack.

Gottheimer, joined Aug. 12 by state, county and local officials, announced what he called his bipartisan Critical Infrastructure Security Plan, a package of proposed federal actions following recent cyberattacks on municipal water systems in New Jersey and elsewhere around the country.

“Every morning, folks in this town wake up, turn on the faucet, and clean water comes out. You flip a switch and your lights come on. Nobody thinks twice about it.

Nobody should have to,” Gottheimer said. “Iʼm standing here because in towns just like this one, all over the country, that deal we have with our utility companies has been put in real jeopardy, and if we donʼt get out ahead of it, it could mean a disaster.”

Gottheimer said Park Ridgeʼs water controls operate offline on a closed system (also serving Woodcliff Lake), making them less vulnerable to the type of intrusion involved in the recent attacks, and credited the borough with upgrading its systems over the past year.

Ridgeʼs systems “Park werenʼt hit in this attack,” he said.

“But, in a rare move, the town hasnʼt waited around to get lucky.”

Gottheimer said attacks over the past two weeks targeted water systems in New Jersey and at least a dozen other states. He cited incidents affecting municipal systems in Cape May and Woodbine, where operators had to manually operate valves and pumps after digital controls were compromised.

The FBI is investigating incidents in several states, Gottheimer said, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Environmental Protection Agency and FBI have issued a joint advisory urging water utilities to secure vulnerable systems.

He said investigators have pointed to Iranian-affiliated actors while also examining whether

utilities obtain cybersecurity tools that otherwise may be beyond their budgets.

A second measure, the Securing Our Critical Infrastructure Act, would create a dedicated rapid-response and threat-notification service within CISA for small and midsize water and electric utilities.

Gottheimer said smaller municipal utilities are particularly vulnerable because many operate with limited staffing and cybersecurity resources and rely on older equipment and software.

“There are roughly 150,000 public water systems in this country, and 97 percent of them serve small and mid-sized communities, just like here in Park Ridge,” he said.

He said New Jersey has more than 600 community water systems serving approximately 87 percent of the stateʼs population.

Gottheimer announced two bipartisan bills and a letter seeking additional federal action.

WESTWOOD — The Westwood Heritage Society has awarded its 2026 Cheryl Todd Memorial Community Service Scholarship to Elisabeth Catherine Maul, recognizing her extensive record of volunteer service in the borough.

Maul received the $1,000 scholarship from Heritage Society President Bob Hibler on behalf of the organization.

The Society said Maul has demonstrated exceptional commitment through community service, scouting, church activities, athletics and environmental efforts.

“Elisabeth has demonstrated special commitment to community, scouting, church, athletics, and environmental efforts,” the Society said in announcing the award. “She is one very accomplished young woman, and well deserving of the Cheryl Todd Memorial Scholarship.”

The story, she said, “just clicked for me.” She saw in Giamo a model for how she might spend the next chapter of her own life.

“He was passionate about ʻhis kids,ʼ and I realized that he was a role model for how I should devote my time and skills.”

Evans became a Bergen CASA Advocate herself. In time, the man whose newspaper profile had inspired her became a colleague and friend.

Giamo, 81, of Hasbrouck Heights, died unexpectedly July 25. A U.S. Army veteran, retired accountant, husband of 58 years, father and grandfather, he had devoted 19 years to advocating for children in foster care through Bergen CASA. Time — and constancy — would become hallmarks of Giamoʼs work.

Bergen CASA Executive Director Lucy Rosen tells us that in one of his later cases, Giamo began advocating for a child at age 8 in 2016.

Over the years that followed, Rosen said, the young person experienced 21 placements.

Giamo remained.

The young person is now 18 and doing well, Rosen said.

Westwood Avenue to close Aug. 17

Westwood Avenue in Westwood will be closed to all vehicle traffic between Broadway and Kinderkamack Road on Monday, Aug. 17, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. for milling and repaving work in the downtown business district. Police said all work is expected to be completed that day. Officers will be stationed in the area to direct traffic, assist motorists around the closure and help protect pedestrians and construction crews.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and use alternate routes where possible.

As work continues on Emersonʼs long-delayed 147-unit downtown redevelopment, a local business owner urged the Borough Council on Aug. 4 to adopt safeguards against future agreements that could put taxpayer funds at risk over a missed deadline.

Robert Obernauer pointed to the boroughʼs continuing legal dispute with Emerson Redevelopers Urban Renewal, or ERUR, over $500,000 in construction goods and services tied to the redevelopment agreement.

The borough sued ERUR in DIPAOLA Superior Court in 2020 after the developer declined to provide the $500,000 following Emersonʼs failure to meet a Dec. 31, 2019 deadline for plans and approvals related to a new ambulance building. The litigation remains unresolved.

Officials have said the $500,000 was part of an arrangement involving transfer of the former ambulance property to the developer, as well as closure of a street and commuter parking lot.

written notice to the borough attorney and administrator, along with a “reasonable cure period,” if the borough misses a deadline under a future development agreement.

“You do not put taxpayers at risk of losing half a million dollars over a single missed deadline,” Obernauer said.

“That is basic common sense and the minimum protection Emerson taxpayers should have received,” he said.

Obernauer, who owns the local Valero gas station, 7-Eleven, and Wayback Burgers, as well as a 7-Eleven in Paramus, criticized changes made to the redevelopment agreement by a prior administration in late 2018.

He said those revisions removed construction deadlines for ERUR while leaving the bor-

ough subject to the Dec. 31, 2019 deadline associated with the $500,000. He also cited provisions allowing a fourth floor, a payment in lieu of taxes, or PILOT, agreement, and seven affordable units to be located off-site.

Borough Attorney John McCann said the December 2018 third amendment removed redevelopment deadlines that had applied to ERUR while retaining the deadline imposed on the borough.

That deadline required Emerson to submit construction plans, obtain permits, and provide a building design by Dec. 31, 2019, to secure the $500,000 in construction goods and services, McCann said.

McCann also referred to a telephone recording made public several years ago that he said indi-

cated the prior administration knew the deadline would likely be impossible to meet.

On Aug. 4, McCann criticized what he called “irresponsible postings” on social media concerning the agreement and said the 2018 changes were “not done in good faith.”

Following brief negotiations

in early 2020, Emerson filed its Superior Court action against ERUR that June seeking the disputed $500,000.

The council did not discuss Obernauerʼs proposed ordinance in detail. Officials told Pascack Press it was unclear what further

That set up a championship showdown with Emerson the following night at Emerson JuniorSenior High School — and this one proved considerably harder to settle.

The teams were tied 2-2 after regulation and remained deadlocked through scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

Montvale finally broke through in the top of the 10th. Jaelyn Pawlyk lifted a sacrifice fly that brought Lynn Ryan home and gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.

Emerson answered in the bottom half and nearly produced something bigger.

With a runner at third and one out, an Emerson batter drove a fly ball deep to left field. Isabella Harcher made a crucial catch, limiting the play to a sacrifice fly and keeping the game tied at 3-3.

Montvale then seized control in the 11th.

The Mustangs erupted for five runs, with Charlotte Brinkman driving a single to center field for the go-ahead run.

Stankowitz returned to the circle in the bottom half and shut down Emerson to secure the 8-3 championship victory.

The title capped a season to remember for the Mustangs and provided a fitting finish for five eighth-graders completing their Montvale softball careers: Alexa Aiello, Madelyn Homberg, Jaelyn Pawlyk, Lynn Ryan and Taylor Stankowitz.

WORTENDYKE CONCERTS GET GRANT AID PARK RIDGE—Music will continue filling the grounds of the historic Wortendyke Barn thanks in part to a $319,400 grant awarded to Bergen County by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

The funding will support arts and cultural programming throughout Bergen County, including the Music at the Wortendyke Barn concert series, a popular annual program held at the historic 18th-century site.

The grant supports a wide range of programs overseen by the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, pro-

viding opportunities for residents of all ages to experience the arts, celebrate creativity, and connect with their communities.

“Arts and culture are an important part of what makes Bergen County such a great place to live,” County Executive James J. Tedesco III said in a statement shared with Pascack Press.

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON—The town administrator said Aug. 10 that the “substantial completion date” for the $4.9 million DPW facility is Saturday, March 27, 2027, nearly four months after the original Dec. 8 completion date released in midJuly.

Near the end of a more than two-hour council meeting Aug. 10, Administrator Mark DiCarlo revealed the new target after a question from Council President Michael

DeSena. DiCarlo said the new date was noted recent meeting minutes.

He apparently referred to minutes of a recent meeting among himself, professionals, and the general contractor, Premier Building & Construction Management of Midland Park. These minutes are shared with the council — not the public.

Councilor Michael Ullman wondered about increased costs due to the delay. DiCarlo said the DPW parking lot lease with Bethany Community Center is an 18-month agree-

ment that began Jan. 1. That agreement costs $5,800 per month and runs through June 30, 2027.

DiCarlo said that, in addition to leasing costs at Bethany, extra costs incurred would include the architect, at about $6,150 per month, for the extra delay.

At the July 13 meeting, the administrator disclosed that the then-revised “substantial completion date” for the new DPW facility was Dec. 8, 2026. See “DPW facility progress ʻextremely slowʼ; Dec. 8

Previously, DiCarlo said he, the township engineer, architect, DPW superintendent, and general contractor meet every two weeks at the municipal complex to monitor construction progress. He said the council regularly receives meeting minutes and updates when appropriate.

He said three change orders have affected the project so far: two monetary and one nonmonetary. He

said the council approved a $6,670 change order in May for removal of a septic tank discovered while footings were being dug.

He said a second change order, not to exceed $15,000, has not yet been finalized because the engineer and architect are disputing invoice costs submitted by subcontractors.

Your Series of 1934A $1,000 Federal Reserve Note is still legal tender and could technically be spent or deposited at face value.

However, banks generally remove these high-denomination notes from circulation when they receive them, and yours is worth considerably more to a collector than the $1,000 printed on it.

The story of the $1,000 Federal Reserve Note goes back to 1918. That large-size issue featured former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton on the front and an impressive flying bald eagle on the reverse. These highdenomination notes were intended primarily for bank-to-bank transactions rather than everyday pocket use.

A redesigned, smaller $1,000 Federal Reserve Note appeared with the Series of 1928, this time featuring Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president of the United States. Your Series of 1934A note carries that same basic Cleveland design.

The story of the $1,000 Federal Reserve Note goes back to 1918. The green seal on your note is characteristic of Federal Reserve Notes of the period. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing continued producing $1,000 notes through 1945. The federal government discontinued issuance of largedenomination notes in 1969, but they remain legal tender today.

Now for the important part: value.

As with coins and currency, condition plays an enormous role in determining what a note is worth. Yours appears to be a circulated but well-preserved example, with nice square corners and no obvious rips, tears or major damage. I do notice a light stain to the left of Grover Clevelandʼs portrait.

Based on what I can see, I would describe this as a very fine circulated note. In my opinion, your Series of 1934A $1,000 Federal Reserve Note has a current value of approximately $3,500.

Examples in substantially better, uncirculated condition can bring considerably more. A recent auction result for a comparable note in beautiful uncirculated condition exceeded $10,000.

So yes, Helen, the bill is real money — but its collector value is the reason you should resist the temptation to spend it.

Piermont PILOT revenue adds $735K to coffers Eyes on 2027 audit, affordables mix

The borough administrator told the council Aug. 11 to expect $735,000 in revenue this year from a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreement with The Piermont, a new 256-unit luxury apartment complex on Patterson Street, part of Hillsdaleʼs redevelopment zone.

Administrator Michael Ghassali said $699,000 will go to Hillsdale and $36,000 to Bergen County. Ghassali said the estimated PILOT payment was calculated 4–5 years ago when rents were “much lower.” He said The Piermont had leased 115 units, with more pending.

He said that, due to changed economic conditions, an audit of Piermont revenues would be conducted in March 2027 by the borough and Piermont management.

Ghassali called the $735,000 PILOT payment “very conservative” and noted a prior estimate of $1.2 million in revenue at some point in the PILOT agreement. He told the council he was not sure how many of the 115 leased units were affordable units.

Mayor Michael Sheinfield pointed out that March is a busy time, with budgets being developed. He wondered whether any “new number” for PILOT rev-

Ghassali said the borough “was due some (PILOT) money now” and he would find out when likely new revenues might be incoming after the March 2027 fiscal audit.

Ghassali said Piermont officials were “very comfortable” with the leasing rate of 115 units.

He told the council he would find out how many of the 115 leased units were the affordables required as part of the project.

Ghassali said he assumed that affordable units are leased first, but he would follow up.

In mid-2022, Acacia Financial Group told councilors that the PILOT agreement was “properly sized” for the project. The PILOT agreement provides 95% of revenues to Hillsdale and 5% to Ber-

gen County, the financial consultant said.

Jennifer Edwards, managing director of Acacia Financial Group, said at the 2022 meeting that the redeveloper asked “for a land and improvement exemption” for a 30-year period. She said the borough will receive 10% of the developmentʼs annual gross revenue in years 1–10; 11% in years 11–20; 12% in years 21–23; 13% in years 24–25; 14% in years 26–27; and 15% in years 28–30.

She said then the boroughʼs first-year revenues are estimated at $736,000, based on current unit rents. She said the borough will increase its annual tax income by nearly $700,000 annually.

She said by year 16, the agreement provides incentives to

move the property owner slowly back to paying conventional taxes, while providing maximum tax revenue to Hillsdale.

She said should rental income drop, the minimum annual tax payment to Hillsdale will be $500,000. “It will not drop any further than that,” she said.

Edwards said the borough will receive an annual 2% “administrative fee” calculated on top of the annual tax payment.

She noted then the borough will receive $735,000 in revenues from the redevelopment versus previously only $35,000 in tax revenues generated there. That accumulates to “just under $40 million for the borough” over the 30-year financial agreement, Edwards estimated then.

Ambulance building repairs Ghassali said insurance would cover repair costs to the ambulance building caused by a falling tree branch in a recent storm. He said repair costs were estimated at $150,000.

He said discussions with the borough architect and engineer raised possible ideas about adding height, a second vehicle bay, or a possible second story at the ambulance building. He said those ideas, and cost estimates, would be discussed with the finance committee and council at a later date.

Engineer says field reno ‘close to end’ HILLSDALE

Slightly more than $6 million in renovations at Memorial Field are nearing completion, with multi-use artificial turf likely to be installed during the week of Aug. 17, the borough engineer said at the Aug. 11 council meeting.

Borough Engineer Nick Chelius of Colliers Engineering & Design said the turf generally takes two to three weeks to install. After that, plans call for installation of coachesʼ boxes, nets, benches, bleachers, and dugouts. He said early September is the “substantial completion” date for the project.

Administrator Michael Ghassali said he spoke with the turf vendor, who promised “custody” of the fields by Labor Day. “We will celebrate,” Mayor Michael Sheinfield said, with

Chelius suggesting a ribbon-cutting, Ghassali suggesting possible fireworks, and Sheinfield suggesting an aerial drone show.

“Heʼll take care of it,” Sheinfield said, referring to Ghassali.

“Weʼre getting very close to the end,” Chelius said, noting only torrential downpours were likely to delay work on the site.

Ghassali said rainstorms would be “a very good test” of drainage systems newly installed at the fields. Chelius said rainwater drains through stone and is collected in drainage chambers, where water percolates into surrounding soil and wetlands. He said all regulatory requirements were met.

Chelius said the batting cage fence was in good condition and would be cleaned, and noted the artificial turf being installed would be laid directly on top of asphalt. Chelius said site land-

scaping would occur in late September or October.

Ghassali said the first phase of playground equipment installation — funded by a $150,000 donation — would occur soon.

Ghassali said it would likely be accessible for children sometime in September.

Improvements are being made at the fieldhouse by local sports associations, and they requested a trash container, which Ghassali said he would provide. Upgrades to the fieldhouse kitchen may occur over the next few weeks after a contract is approved, Ghassali said.

Recent estimates put the total cost of Memorial Field renovations at about $6.3 million, including soft costs such as construction management, engineering, and legal fees, officials said.

what has shaped my life most, I wouldnʼt point to a single job, organization, or accomplishment.

Iʼd point to the people Iʼve met along the way.

Growing up, I never imagined my career would revolve around building relationships. Looking back, I can see that every chapter of my professional life was preparing me for the next, even when I couldnʼt see it at the time.

My journey began with summer jobs at the Washington Township Recreation Center, where I worked as a lifeguard, swim instructor, and eventually a manager. At first, it was simply a summer job, but it quickly became much more.

I learned that responsibility isnʼt something you are handed with a title. It is earned through the trust people place in you.

As a lifeguard, I knew that staying focused could one day save a life. As a swim instructor, I learned that teaching children wasnʼt just about helping them master a skill. It was about earning their confidence, helping them overcome fear, and giving their parents peace of mind.

Those early experiences taught me that leadership begins with trust, a lesson that has stayed with me throughout every chapter of my career.

Today, as the owner and publisher of Pascack Valley City Lifestyle and Northern Highlands City Lifestyle, I often tell people that I donʼt really sell advertising.

I tell stories and help build brands.

When someone opens one of our magazines, I hope they discover a local business they have never visited, a nonprofit they didnʼt know existed, or a neighbor doing remarkable work without asking for recognition. It is easy to overlook the place where you live. We drive the same roads, pass the same storefronts, and become so familiar with our surroundings that we stop seeing them. My work has given me the privilege of looking closer.

Over the years, I have come to realize that people donʼt buy into a title. They buy into a person.

Whether it is a child trusting you to teach them how to swim, a business owner investing in your vision, or a volunteer giving time to a cause, it all begins with trust.

Trust is not built through promises or credentials. It is built by showing up, doing what you say you are going to do, and being there consistently.

The people I admire most understand that. They are the first to volunteer, lend a hand, or introduce two people who should know each other. They do not seek recognition. They simply show up.

They have taught me that consistency is one of the most powerful forms of leadership.

I have also learned that relationships compound. One introduction leads to another opportunity. One act of kindness inspires someone else to pay it forward.

One volunteer experience creates friendships that last for years. I have seen this happen time and again throughout the Pascack Valley and beyond.

After serving as vice president and now stepping into the role of president of the Greater Pascack Valley Chamber of Commerce, I have gained an even deeper appreciation for what leadership means.

It is not about having a title or being the person with all the answers. It is about bringing people together, listening, building consensus, and creating opportunities for others to succeed.

The Chamberʼs greatest strength is not simply helping businesses grow; it is creating meaningful connections among business owners, nonprofit organizations, schools, municipalities, and community leaders. Those relationships spark ideas, create partnerships, and strengthen the communities we call home.

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON PROJECT UPDATES

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON The township administrator and engineer provided updates Aug. 10 for ongoing local projects, including 450 Pascack Road, a warning light near the Emergency Services Building, upgrades to a dangerous intersection, streambank restoration in Musquapsink Brook, and new inclusive playground equipment at Clark and Memorial fields.

Administrator Mark DiCarlo and Engineer Glenn Beckmeyer Jr. provided status reports on proposed projects and sought council input before proceeding. At one point, the meeting livestream stopped but was restored within minutes. The meeting video is available online.

Plans for 450 Pascack property At 450 Pascack Road, following its acquisition for $750,000 last year, a contractor recently demol-

ished a house and barn on the site.

The administration proposes turning the 3.2-acre strip of land between Ridgewood Boulevard East, Memorial Field and Washington Elementary School into a passive recreation area, with a woodchip walking path about six feet wide extending about two-thirds of the siteʼs length.

Toward the rear is a protected riparian area near a small stream, DiCarlo said. The proposed path would loop back before reaching that area.

Councilor Steven Cascio suggested a fence separating the property from the nearby school for safety, and DiCarlo said costs would be obtained.

Council President Michael DeSena suggested connecting a future parking lot at 450 Pascack Road with the nearby Memorial Field lot, allowing entry through one driveway and exit through another.

DiCarlo said the projectʼs cost estimate, without connecting the lots, was three years old and needed

updating. A proposed eight-car lot might also be expanded; Beckmeyer said somewhere between 10 and 20 spaces might be possible.

Other options include a native pollinator garden, rain garden, picnic tables and making the park ADA-accessible, Beckmeyer said.

He also will price the parking connection, a possible decorative fence and, at Councilor Michael Ullmanʼs request, path lighting.

Warning lights at ESB building Following negotiations, DiCarlo said the county has allowed the township to purchase, install and maintain two flashing warning signs for east- and westbound traffic on Washington Avenue by the Emergency Services Building.

The solar-powered, polemounted yellow lights will display the message “Emergency Vehicles Exiting When Flashing” and will be activated by emergency responders with handheld fobs.

DiCarlo said the lights will not stop traffic but will warn motorists

that fire trucks and ambulances are exiting. He said the signs cost about $15,000, not including installation.

DeSena said the warning signs were promised to first responders during firehouse construction several years ago.

Councilor Tom Sears, a volunteer firefighter here, questioned whether the placement accounted for the turning radius of fire trucks leaving the bays. Beckmeyer said the signs will be outside the roadway area marked “Do Not Block The Box.” Sears remained concerned that vehicles stopping too close to the building could interfere with a large truckʼs exit.

Upgrades at Washington– Van Emburgh intersection DiCarlo said Bergen County has made signage and striping changes at the Washington Avenue–Van Emburgh Avenue intersection, including moving stop lines to improve sight lines.

County figures show about 20,000 vehicles use the intersection daily — about 12,000 on Van Emburgh and 8,000 on Washington Avenue, he said.

The county reported 82 crashes over six years, including 22 involving injuries. DiCarlo said statistics show most crashes involve westbound Washington Avenue traffic and vehicles traveling north on Van Emburgh.

Beckmeyer said additional warning signs have been installed and the county asked the township to remove vegetation blocking motoristsʼ sight lines. The township will perform initial trimming, with homeowners responsible for maintaining vegetation afterward, DiCarlo said.

Ullman said motorists traveling north on Van Emburgh still need to “creep into” the intersection to see approaching traffic. Beckmeyer said officials would reassess the sight lines.

DiCarlo said the county plans a traffic count in September to help determine whether a signal is warranted. He said traffic volume is only one factor, with the steep hill, roadway curves and engineering considerations also involved.

FACFN, FABVR In a culture that celebrates constant productivity, many people wear busyness like a badge of honor. Yet our brains and bodies were never designed to operate under nonstop stress. According to the American Psychological Association, approximately 77% of adults report physical symptoms caused by stress, while 73% report stress affecting their mental health.

Relaxation is often misunderstood. It is more than lying on the couch or taking a vacation.

True relaxation allows the nervous system to shift from a constant “fight-or-flight” state into the “rest-and-digest” state, where healing, repair, and recovery occur.

When the brain perceives ongoing stress — from work, finances, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, illness, or emotional challenges — it releases cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones are lifesaving during emergencies, but when they remain elevated, they can interfere with blood pressure, digestion, immune function, sleep, and mental clarity.

The encouraging news is that the nervous system can become more resilient. Regular relaxation techniques can help reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance concentration, and these benefits can begin with just a few intentional minutes each day.

One of the simplest tools is controlled breathing. Slow, deep breathing signals to the brain that the body is safe and helps calm

the nervous system. One exercise is to inhale for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and exhale for eight seconds.

Movement also plays an important role. Gentle activities such as walking, stretching, yoga, or spending time outdoors can reduce muscle tension and improve mood. Quality sleep is equally important. During sleep, the brain strengthens memories, balances hormones, and repairs tissue. Establishing a regular bedtime, limiting screen exposure before sleep, and creating a quiet sleeping environment can improve overall health.

Constant notifications, endless emails, and excessive screen time also keep the brain in a heightened state of alertness.

Sometimes the healthiest decision you can make is simply turning your phone off for an hour and being fully present with family, friends, or yourself.

Of course, there was no Mariott in those days, but there were dozens of small hotels and boarding houses. In our local communities it was common to find a hotel and livery stable (for renting horses) both just steps from the railroad station.

Some of those old hotels are still standing. The Park Hotel in Westwood and Blockʼs Hall in Emerson became restaurants called the Iron Horse and Emerson Hotel. The Hillsdale House still stands on Broadway across from that boroughʼs train station, and for many years it has been a salon. The Park Avenue Hotel, still at the cor-

ner of Park and Maple avenues in Park Ridge (now partially hidden behind a modern storefront on the ground floor), was one of three hotels in that neighborhood in the late 19th century.

Some families ran boarding houses or even opened their private homes to summer visitors, welcoming the influx of vacationers as an opportunity to make some extra cash.

At a Pascack Valley boarding house in 1910, one could expect to pay from $7 to $10 per week, depending on the roomʼs size and the propertyʼs amenities. That is equivalent to about $235 to $330 in todayʼs money.

An advertisement printed in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on May 12, 1912 lists a property in West-

wood: “Exceptional opportunity to board with a private family and enjoy the conveniences of a beautiful home. All improvements: gas, electricity, water, over an acre of lawn, boating, shade trees, fruit trees and own garden. 10 minutes from station, 45 minutes from New York.”

Proximity to the railroad station was important: Some families would board in the countryside for weeks during the summer, and during that time the man of the house would commute back and forth into the city for work every day. It was common to see the wives and children seeing them off at the train station in the morning, and there would be a crowd again in the evening as they awaited fatherʼs return.

Memorial Field, Clark Field ADA upgrades At Memorial Field, DiCarlo said plans include ADA parking, a ramp, sidewalk improvements and three new ADA-accessible bleachers designed to allow someone using a wheelchair to sit with others in the bleachers.

He said extending the sidewalk around the field was not possible because of drainage issues.

DiCarlo also read letters from two families, one with an autistic child and another with a child with physical disabilities, praising the townshipʼs accessibility efforts and looking forward to new equipment at Clark Field.

Beckmeyer said Clark will have two ADA-accessible parking spaces and two pathways to new accessible playground equipment.

DiCarlo displayed photos of planned equipment including swings, slides, sensory features, musical equipment and a communication panel.

An existing tire swing will be removed because it is not ADAcompliant, he said.

Swim club site update: Sept. 8 presentation DiCarlo said “we finally have a plan together” for the former swim club property and plans to have Frank Rossi of Boswell Engineering make a presentation at the Sept. 8 council meeting.

He said Rossi has determined the “contamination circumference” and developed a soil-remediation plan. DiCarlo said he hopes Rossi will provide a cost estimate and timeline.

Musquapsink Brook restoration underway DiCarlo identified a Washington Avenue site where erosion and sediment wash into Musquapsink Brook during storms and requested a $44,500 change order to address it as part of the larger brook restoration project.

He said doing the work now would save $10,000 to $20,000 in NJDEP application costs as well as a contractor mobilization fee.

Council later approved the change order by voice vote.

“Correct this now and it will save a lot of money down the line,” DiCarlo told council.

DiCarlo said the newly identified erosion was not part of a 2023 drone study that found severely eroded sanitary manholes and led to “emergency” streambank work beginning in 2024.

DeSena and Ullman asked whether similar erosion problems likely existed elsewhere along Musquapsink Brook. Ullman asked whether going “fifty yards upstream” beyond the current project might reveal the same conditions. DiCarlo said it likely would.

DiCarlo said he plans to put about $700,000 into upcoming budgets for future brook restoration.

“We have plans to address this in stages,” DiCarlo said.

Women’s club backs patients

PARK RIDGE — The Womenʼs Club at The Residence at Park Ridge recently turned the proceeds from a breast cancer awareness fundraiser into 120 care packages for women receiving infusions at Valley Health Systemʼs Luckow Pavilion in Paramus.

The club raised $613 during a three-day fundraiser in October 2025 through sales of pens, candy, cookies, bracelets and other items, along with donations.

In June, members used the proceeds to assemble goody bags containing puzzle books, pens, water, hand cream, lip balm and lemon candies.

Sandy Carapezza, executive director of development, visited The Residence to thank the women and collect the donations.

The project gave club members an opportunity to support women receiving treatment in their local community.

At Giamoʼs wake, Evans spoke withthe youth for whom he had once served as a CASA Advocate for all those years. The young man had been adopted but remained close to him.

“The youth was clearly heartbroken,” Evans said. “Chip was the person who had been in his life the longest. It was as if he had lost his grandfather. That is the kind of love and loyalty that Chip inspired.”

Rosen, who started at Bergen CASA as an Advocate herself, remembers being struck by Giamoʼs ease with people from the first time she met him.

“He was so genuinely down to earth and charming, so comfortable with everyone he met, that I wondered how I could ever measure up as a CASA Advocate,” she wrote in a remembrance posted after his death. “People immediately trusted him. They relaxed around him.”

Years later, when Rosen was conducting Bergen CASAʼs preservice training, she made Giamo what she called her “secret weapon”: She scheduled him toward the end of the training, after new Advocates had spent weeks learning how to perform the role “by the book.”

Then Giamo would explain what experience had taught him: Know the case before meeting the caseworker. Read every document. Arrive with thoughtful questions. Make clear from the beginning that you want to become a useful part of the team rather than another demand on an already overburdened professional.

And always cap the conversation with a caseworker with a simple question: How can I help you?

“Chip understood something that canʼt be taught from a manual: the strongest advocacy is built on trust,” Rosen wrote.

Because Giamo treated people with kindness and respect, she said, professionals returned his calls and emails and shared information with him. On particularly difficult cases, Rosen said, judges

sometimes invited him into chambers with attorneys because they valued his judgment and understanding of the child-welfare system.

“When Bergen CASA had an especially difficult case, we quietly hoped Chip would take it,” Rosen said.

Giamo served further still: He had recently joined Bergen CASAʼs Board of Trustees.

And there was another side of him that colleagues remember just as clearly: He checked in on the office. He brought cookies. Once he discovered Rosenʼs favorites, she said, he would quietly bring extras for her in a paper bag.

If she was working late over a holiday weekend, he would call the office with a firm redirect: Go home.

“Family was everything to Chip,” Rosen wrote. “Relationships were everything to him.”

More children need Advocates Giamoʼs death comes as Bergen CASA says demand for its services is rising.

Rosen said the organization advocated for 152 children in the most recent fiscal year, up from 120 previously, and the number continues to increase.

At the same time, she said, Bergen CASA expects to lose approximately $200,000 in federal funding — more than half of its government grant support.

The organization recently arranged expedited summer training for five new volunteers to help support more than 10 newly placed foster children and is intensifying recruitment for its next Advocate training cohort, which begins Sept. 29.

Court Appointed Special Advocates are trained volunteers appointed by Family Court judges to advocate for the best interests of children who have entered foster care.

They work alongside — but independently of — caseworkers, attorneys, schools, medical and mental-health providers, foster families and biological families.

Advocates gather information, identify unmet needs and report to the court so judges have an inde-

pendent view of what is happening in a childʼs life.

The work can involve education, medical care, mental-health services, transportation, family relationships and the innumerable practical problems that can arise when a child is living within a complex system.

It is not casual volunteerism.

Evans told Pascack Press earlier this year that when she signed up, she was advised to think of CASA almost as a parttime job.

That was precisely the sort of involvement she had wanted.

“I could still just write checks,” Evans said. “But I didnʼt want to write checks. I wanted to do, and be involved.”

Much of the job, she said, is persistence: finding out what a child needs, locating the person who can provide it and following up until something happens.

“We nag,” Evans said. “We nag politely, and we work the system.”

Volunteers come with different professional backgrounds and different strengths, she said. The common denominator is simpler.

“Itʼs caring. You want to make a difference in a childʼs life.”

Giamoʼs widow, Margo, supports Bergen CASA telling his story to help recruit new Advocates, Rosen said, believing it is something her husband would have wanted.

The organization is also exploring creation of a scholarship in his honor for young people pursuing trade school, vocational education, professional certifications and other career pathways.

Rosen said the concept reflects Giamoʼs practical understanding that a traditional fouryear college degree is not the only path toward a secure and independent adulthood.

But another part of his legacy is already evident.

Nilene Evans is part of it.

Ten years ago, she opened a newspaper and encountered a retired man who believed that perhaps he could make a small difference for a child.

She read his story.

That was the example Evans saw in him in 2016.

That mix offered a snapshot of the organization the chamber says it is trying to build across the 10 communities it serves: Montvale, Park Ridge, Woodcliff Lake, River Vale, Old Tappan, Hillsdale, Washington Township, Westwood, Emerson and Oradell.

Some in the room had served the chamber for years. Others were attending for the first time.

Brian Roth, a Bergen County native and dentist, told the group he is putting the finishing touches on a new Montvale practice, ARC Dental and Implant Center, he aims to open in October.

“Itʼs been a dream of mine to open my own practice and connect with my community,” Roth said.

Elsewhere around the room were representatives of banking, wealth management, information technology, office systems, estate and business law, real estate and nonprofit organizations including Meals on Wheels North Jersey and Bergen Volunteers.

Steven Hopper, president of Park Ridge-based Pratt Plumbing Heating & Air Inc., noted that the company will mark its 100th anniversary next year. Janelle Larghi, coordinator of Tri-Boro Food Pantry, and executive director of Meals on Wheels North Jersey, described an organization serving residents in 32 northern Bergen County communities and said she is working to increase public understanding of whom Meals on Wheels can serve.

Beth Figman, a Bergen Volunteers board member attending as a guest of chamber President Anthony Rizzo [essay, page 20], had a particular interest in the morningʼs program: Bergen Volunteers is planning an Oct. 23 breakfast focused on artificial intelligence, and she said she hoped to connect with Scheufele after hearing her presentation.

That range of businesses and missions made the morningʼs guest topic unusually broad: what artificial intelligence can actually do for an organization once the novelty of asking a chatbot questions wears off.

Kris Scheufele, founder and principal of Wyckoff-based NJ Business AI and a board member of the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce, spent about half an hour demonstrating ways businesses can use AI not simply to generate text, but to perform and organize work.

Her message was essentially that business owners should think of AI less as a single chat window and more as an increasingly capable assistant — one that can be given defined jobs, connected to other workplace tools and supplied with business data.

Scheufele demonstrated Claude, Anthropicʼs AI platform, including “skills” that can give the system standing instructions for a particular task.

She compared a skill to a recipe card: a business could, for example, create instructions defining its brand voice, then reuse those instructions whenever it asks the system to produce marketing material.

She also showed members how

AI systems can connect with email, calendars, cloud storage and design platforms, and how scheduled tasks can automate recurring work.

One example from her own workflow is a Monday-morning review that checks for messages requiring follow-up and helps prepare responses.

Members quickly supplied examples from their own experience.

One said he uses AI to improve emails by asking it to make them more professional.

Another described using it for marketing, inventory control and projections — while adding an important caveat: “Itʼs a tool. Itʼs not a Bible.”

Scheufele agreed with the underlying point. Users do not have to master every feature, she said, and can begin by asking the AI itself what might be useful for a particular business or job.

Her demonstration moved from writing assistance into more ambitious territory. Using a browser extension, Scheufele showed how an AI assistant could review publicly available social-media material, identify patterns in successful posts and help turn those findings into a content plan. She demonstrated the concept using Meals on Wheels as an example, asking the system to examine related organizations and mealdelivery accounts for ideas.

That research, she said, could then be combined with social-media scheduling software to prepare weeks of posts at once.

But Scheufele placed particular emphasis on something considerably less flashy: business data.

“If you leave here with nothing else, you should at least have a handle on your data and understand what you can do with that data using AI,” she told the group.

She walked members through three Google tools: Google Business Profile, Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

A Google Business Profile, she said, should not be treated as a static listing. Businesses can post updates there much as they do on social media and review such information

as calls and website clicks.

Google Search Console, meanwhile, can show the actual queries people use to find a business, along with impressions, clicks, clickthrough rates and search positions.

Exporting that information and giving it to an AI system can help a business identify where its online visibility might be improved.

Sometimes, Scheufele said, the answer is not producing large amounts of new material but making targeted changes to such basics as page titles and descriptions.

She also encouraged businesses with websites to publish useful, current information addressing the problems customers are trying to solve — rather than writing exclusively about the product they hope to sell.

For one durable-medical-equipment client, she said, content about such subjects as swollen legs and how to measure for compression socks reached people earlier in their search for help than product-centered marketing alone.

Following the presentation, members asked about automating newsletters and email campaigns.

Scheufele suggested creating reusable brand-voice instructions from examples of a companyʼs own writing, then using those instructions to draft an email series while leaving delivery to a dedicated email platform.

The breadth of the presentation prompted one member to suggest the subject could easily fill an entire workshop.

“Thatʼs the tricky part” of a short presentation, Scheufele said.

The objective is less to teach every workflow than to “open up possibilities.”

What about unintended consequences?

The chamber discussion came as questions about AIʼs speed, power and consequences were moving well beyond the technology sector.

Just three days earlier, U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, whose 5th District includes much of northern Bergen County, called for mandatory “rules

of the road” governing advanced AI systems.

In an Aug. 4 statement supporting the “Pacing the Frontier” petition signed by more than 1,300 employees at major AI labs, Gottheimer said the United States should continue to lead in AI innovation while developing safeguards for national security, critical infrastructure and other highrisk areas.

“America must lead the way in AI innovation, but we have to do it responsibly,” Gottheimer said. “We canʼt let the AI industry run wild.”

At the Westwood meeting, the concern was closer to the everyday workplace.

After Scheufeleʼs presentation, Pascack Press asked about a different consequence of those efficiencies: Many of the tasks AI can now perform — organizing information, drafting routine material and handling administrative work — traditionally have fallen to interns and entry-level employees, giving newcomers a way to learn a profession.

Does automating that work risk eliminating the bottom rungs of the career ladder?

Scheufele said she does not view AI as a substitute for the human element of a business or profession.

Its strongest use, she said, is in reducing the time spent on repetitive and technical tasks.

She said AI can facilitate such work as organizing, outlining and assembling information, but that the remaining human contribution — judgment, creativity and the actual craft of writing — retains its importance.

Asked about journalism, Scheufele said she believes the proliferation of AI-generated content could actually increase the value of original reporting and distinctly human work. “I truly believe your skill set or experience with comput-

ers/tech doesnʼt matter—if you can write a sentence you can use AI meaningfully to save time and accomplish much more than you could without it,” she said.

For businesses, she said, the central benefit is saving time on “arduous tasks that are monotonous and repetitive” and allowing people to concentrate on work humans do particularly well.

“All operations,” she said, “can be improved and enhanced.”

Chamber plans for Citizens of the Year gala The meeting also turned to the chamberʼs own coming work.

President Anthony Rizzo said the organization is preparing for its 52nd Citizens of the Year gala at Seasons in October. The chamber has selected two 2026 honorees: Theresa Capparelli, a nonprofit leader and chamber board member, and Dr. Peter Wohl, CEO and owner of The Spine & Health Center of New Jersey.

Rizzo said last yearʼs gala drew about 175 people. Proceeds help support charities selected by the honorees as well as the chamberʼs scholarships for high school seniors in each of the 10 communities it represents.

Members will spend the coming weeks seeking sponsors, program advertising and silent-auction donations from businesses throughout the Pascack Valley.

It was another illustration of the chamberʼs stated mission: business networking tied closely to community involvement.

“Weʼre not just doing it for ourselves,” Rizzo told members. “Weʼre really doing it for the places we live and serve.”

Gottheimer said the service would establish a clear federal point of contact for utilities facing an active cyber threat or suspected intrusion. “Right now, if youʼre a small town utility and something looks wrong on your network, you might not have anyone to call, or you might not even know who to call in the first place.”

Gottheimer also said he is sending a letter to CISA, the EPA and FBI calling for additional incident-response teams and technical assistance for water and wastewater utilities affected by the recent attacks. He calls for water- and electricsystem-specific cybersecurity guidance and a standing rapid-response framework.

“My cybersecurity package works together to protect our towns and families,” Gottheimer said. “The legislation gives our utilities the tools to find their own weaknesses before an adversary does. The rapid response service makes sure small towns arenʼt fighting this alone.”

He also called on the Senate to pass the PILLAR Act, which would reauthorize the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program through 2033, and cited other federal legislation aimed at improving cybersecurity for rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities and the grid.

Gottheimer said the threat extends beyond water and power systems, pointing to a 2023 ransomware attack that forced Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center and Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley Medical Center to divert ambulances and reschedule elective proce-

dures. “When I say critical infrastructure, Iʼm not just talking about water or energy systems,” he said.

Joining Gottheimer were New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell Director Michael Geraghty, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, Bergen County Chief of Detectives Jeff Angermeyer, state Sen. Holly Schepisi (who also is borough rate counsel, through OʼToole Scrivo LLC), Park Ridge Mayor Keith Misciagna, Councilman Will Fenwick, and Councilman Bruce Goldsmith.

Gottheimer said municipalities and utilities should continue updating and patching systems, strengthening authentication and access controls, testing their networks and training employees, while acknowledging that smaller operators often need federal assistance to do so.

Dear Almost, Your kidsʼ concerns are well founded. Financial fraud is a massive and growing problem for older Americans. Financial fraud cost older adults an estimated $81.5 billion in 2024, according

to the Federal Trade Commission – a staggering figure that reflects both reported losses and the many scams that go unreported.

While many scams today target people of all ages, older adults are often singled out or disproportionately affected. From urgent phone calls and alarming emails to online romance schemes and fake investment opportunities, criminals use every trick in the book to pressure seniors into handing over money or personal information.

Knowing the most common scams is the first line of defense.

Hereʼs a list of scams seniors should watch for: • Imposter and government scams: Fraudsters pretend to be from Social Security, Medicare, the IRS, the police, banks, or utility companies. They claim thereʼs a problem requiring immediate payment or personal information and may threaten arrest or loss of benefits.

• Tech support scams: Calls, emails, or pop-ups warn

your computer has a virus. The scammer offers to “fix” it but instead steals money, personal data, or access to your device.

• Grandparent or family emergency scams: Callers pose as a relative—often a grandchild—in distress and urgently request money. Some even use AI to mimic a loved oneʼs voice.

• Investment and cryptocurrency scams: Offers for “too good to be true” investments, including crypto or high-yield retirement schemes, often promise big returns but lead to large financial losses.

• Romance scams: Scammers build fake online relationships on social media, dating sites and other interactive platforms, then invent emergencies or investment opportunities to get money.

Seniors have lost millions to these schemes.

• Medicare scams: Calls or texts claim to be from Medicare, asking you to verify your number, offering special plans, or warning of fraud. Medicare will not con-

tact you this way.

• Sweepstakes and lottery scams: Youʼre told youʼve won a prize but must pay fees or taxes first. Real lotteries never require payment.

• Charity scams: Scammers call or email, asking for donations to fake charities, often after disasters. Always verify before giving.

• Phishing and online fraud: Emails, texts, and pop-ups that look like theyʼre from banks, Amazon, or PayPal try to steal passwords, account numbers, or trick you into clicking harmful links. scams: • Employment Seniors seeking part-time work or ways to supplement their retirement should watch out for fake job offers on LinkedIn, indeed, and other online job sites. ment agreement, reiterating that deadlines for the redeveloper were removed in the December 2018 revision.

Last fall the council moved to revoke ERURʼs designation as the boroughʼs downtown redeveloper, citing multiple alleged breaches of contract, unpaid property taxes, and a lack of progress on the project. The council also authorized McCann to pursue legal steps that could lead to condemnation of the redevelopment property.

Since then, McCann said, ERUR has made progress, including paying property taxes, funding an escrow account for professional oversight, and resolving some contractual concerns. The proposed seven off-site affordable units remain unresolved, he said.

McCann said a meeting was expected soon concerning those units with the redevelopmentʼs special affordable-housing monitor, appointed by Superior Court in 2021. He said there were “plenty of

other developers” in New Jersey willing to finish the project, including its affordable-housing obligations, if ERUR does not complete it and the borough ultimately proceeds with condemnation.

Officials said work has recently been underway and the project appears to be progressing.

ing Cinar Turkish Restaurant, Cork & Keg, and Ranch Cleaners—to make way for the JMF Properties redevelopment project.

The ordinance passed despite opposition from property owners, their attorney, and some residents.

Richard R. ‘Dick VOORHEES

in 1972, after living in Syracuse, N.Y. for seven years.

Dick dedicated his life to the Borough of Montvale, serving on the Borough Council for over two decades, coaching sports, and organizing community events for the Montvale Senior Community Center, Montvale Free Public Library, and the Montvale Historic Preservation Commission.

Richard was also a driver for former New Jersey General Assembly member Charlotte Vandervalk and serving as a sergeant at arms for the Assembly.

In the summer, Richard and Durelle enjoyed their vacation home on Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos, spending time with friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Montvale Free Public Library.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of over almost seven decades, Durelle, along with his daughter, Jill (Mark Corrigan) and son Randall (Kathleen Duhamel), and three grandchildren: Nicholas, Gabrielle and Darius, and one great-granddaughter, Meilani.

Born in 1930 in Lambertville, N.J., Dick graduated from Drexel University, earning a bachelorʼs degree in engineering.

and live performances and was famously able to remember the artist behind nearly any song. She loved going to concerts with her friends. A devoted New York Yankees fan, Tara enjoyed watching and attending sporting events.

In recent years, she developed a passion for traveling the world and visiting places she had never been before.

Tara adored her grandpups, Livi and Marley, who held an enormous piece of her heart.

Tara was predeceased by her beloved parents, William and Barbara Leahy, and her brother, Billy.

She leaves behind family, lifelong friends, and countless others whose lives she touched with her kindness, compassion, and unconditional love.

Her love will remain with us always. JR and Tori find comfort in knowing that Tara will forever be by their side, watching over them and guiding them with the same love and care she gave them throughout her life. Her love will live on in their hearts and in the countless memories they will carry with them forever.

Andrew KASPER

Andrew Kasper—beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, physician, mentor, musician, and friend—passed away on Aug. 9, 2026, surrounded by a family that adored him Andrew was born Jan. 6, 1951, in Paterson to Marge and Andrew Kasper. He grew up in North Jersey, attending St. Johnʼs Academy in Hillsdale and Our Lady of Mercy School in Park Ridge for elementary school, and later St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale and Park Ridge High School.

At PRHS he was voted least likely to graduate, an honor that became increasingly funny as his life unfolded.

Andrew attended the University of Mississippi, where he earned a degree in mathematics

In 1974, Andrew married Sherry Gambino, whom he met through his sister Mary in Kinnelon. That year, he survived cancer. Andrew and Sherry began their family before moving to Hartford, Conn., where he completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Hartford Hospital.

He returned to New Jersey to open his practice in Ridgewood and became a founder of Ridgewood Cardiology at Valley Hospital. He and Sherry lived in River Vale before settling in Montvale.
