welcome to the new year. Let’s start with the bad news: 2016 was rough. Between the Zika virus, Syrian refugee crisis, and a number of terrorist attacks, we saw our fair share of catastrophe. We lost some of our heroes—R.I.P. David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and many more. And then, of course, there was Brexit, the U.S. presidential election...yeah, we don’t want to talk about it. But now comes the good news—we see the light of hope, and 2017 is here. And like every new year, with it comes another chance to reflect

on our past and think about how we can better our lives in the future. Got resolutions? If your goal is to eat healthy, hit the gym, quit smoking, or cut down stress, we’ve got a guide for how to do it in Prague. But if throwing caution to the wind in the new year is more your style, this issue will also show you how to knock some items off your bucket list here, whether that includes driving a tank, getting inked, or going bungee jumping. And don’t feel guilty about your Christmas-

season drinking—after all, Prague is the place to do it. In this issue, we put the health benefits of beer to the test, and we think you’ll be happy with the results. When you think about it, there’s a lot of reasons to look forward to 2017, and another year of The Prague Visitor is just one. From us to you, here’s to 2017. Na zdraví!

THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO IN JANUARY

Green Day

Sunday, January 22, 7PM It seems strange to think Calfornia punk band has been around since the early 90's, but they have. In fact, it's been over 20 years since their debut album Dookie was released. The album continued to gain momentum, selling over eleven million copies internationally. Dookie also won the 1994 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. Green Day's three follow-up albums, Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), and Warning (2000) did not achieve the massive success of Dookie, though they were still successful, with Insomniac and Nimrod reaching double platinum and Warning achieving platinum status. The band's rock opera, American Idiot (2004), reignited the band's popularity with a younger generation, selling six million copies in the U.S.The band's currently touring on their twelfth studio album, Revolution Radio- which was released on October 7, 2016.

Keeping Your

Resolution: Eat Healthy

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION While in Prague

The holiday s can be a whirlwind— you’re gorg ing one minut e, Christmas gi on holiday meals and splurging on fts, and the ne self to new xt , yo u’ re pledging yo year’s resolu urtions to stay or save som healthy, get e cash. But fit, while most the age-old of us trad engage in January 1, no ition of making reso lutions com t everyone e can keep th ose goals. That’s why we’ sticking with re putting together a guide to yo popular prom ur resolutions, based on the mos ises we’re he t you’re lookin aring this ye g to go vega ar n, quit smok . Whether here’s how to start the ing, or get fit year off right , . Cheers!

We’ll admit, eating healthy in Prague can seem like a daunting task. It’s telling that the “vegetarian” item most traditional Czech restaurants offer is smazeny syr, or fried cheese, which is neither a vegetable nor healthy. But beyond the meat-heavy goulash and smoked sausages, Prague is home to a wealth of healthconscious and vegetarian food joints. Here's a few of our favorites.

Plevel Krymská 2, Prague 10 - Vršovice Breakfast, lunch and dinner / vegan / $$$

Aside from its name, which translates to “weeds,” Plevel isn’t obviously vegan. The menu offers dishes that sound so gourmet you won’t notice the meat missing— try the “oyster mushroom pepper based goulash with polenta cake and rocket salad” or “marinated baked portobello mushroom with cauliflower puree and vegetable demi glace.” But Plevel is as vegan as it gets, and even has a “raw food” section, too.

Clear Head (Lehka Hlava)

Estrella

Borsov 2, Praha 1

Opatovická 17, Praha 1

Lunch and dinner / vegan and vegetarian / $$$$

Lunch and dinner / vegetarian / $$

Radost Bělehradská 234/120, Praha 2 Brunch, lunch, and dinner / vegan and vegetarian / $$$

A nightclub may not seem like the best place to find healthy food fare. But don’t knock it until you try it— Vinohrady club Radost is known just as much for its dance music and glitzy atmosphere and it is for its vegan and vegetarian restaurant - which in fact was the first vegetarian restaurant in Prague. After dancing the night away downstairs, head to the club’s adjoining restaurant for a healthy brunch that will cure even the nastiest hangover.

Etnosvět Legerova 1832/40, Praha 2 Lunch and dinner / vegan and vegetarian / $$$$

If you’re looking for ethnic flair, you can’t go wrong with Etnosvet, a vegetarian restaurant with dishes from all across the globe. With casual upstairs and fancier downstairs seating, the restaurant is good for all occasions; from a quick lunch to a hot date. In addition to a normal list-style menu, Etnosvet provides a fantastic tasting menu and delicious wines.

You don’t have to be vegetarian to appreciate the dishes at Estrella. In fact, this vegetarian joint is considered one of the best restaurants in town. Estrella features a rotating seasonal menu based on local produce options, but if they’ve got it on the menu, the quinoa spinach burger on a brioche bun will be calling our name.

Ugova Salaterie Various locations Breakfast, lunch and dinner / offers meat / $$

For on-the-go healthy options, stop by Ugova Salaterie or its smaller juice and snack bar, UGO Freshbar. The health food chain is known for its colorful selection of soups and salads, and ice cream so good you’ll forget it’s vegan—or that it’s winter, for that matter. With a range of menu items available with or without meat, Ugo is the perfect fast-food starter kit for your healthy New Year’s resolutions.

Our round-up wouldn’t be complete without Lehka Hlava, the popular vegetarian and vegan restaurant whose name translates to “Clear Head.” Picky guests will be happy here—the menu key is mind-bogglingly long, pointing out dishes with or without nuts, gluten, garlic, and other specifics. Lehka Hlava serves meatless takes on everything from cheeseburgers to tacos, Thai curries and spaghetti, but forget coming in without a reservation. For vegetarian versions of Czech dishes, head to Lehka Hlava’s sister restaurant, Maitrea, which serves meatless goulash and svíčková made with vegetable bases and whole wheat dumplings.

Pastva Nádražní 102, Praha 5-Smíchov Lunch and dinner / vegan / $$$

Pastva is truly a hidden gem. Well-decorated and stylish with excellent meal presentation, the restaurant provides a great ambience. Come for the generously sized pastas and burgers (which are often regarded as the best in Prague), and return for a variety of other great and unique vegan choices. The restaurant also doubles as a deli and cake shop, so if you are in the neighborhood and pressed for time, Pastva is a great place to grab a snack.

Resolution: Get Healthy

Bikram Yoga

Holmes Place

Crossfit Praha

Karolíny Světlé 8, Praha 1 Na Pankráci passage between #121 a 125, Praha 4 It’s no secret that Prague isn’t the most gym-friendly city, but there are other ways to get your sweat on— just try Bikram (or hot) yoga. Bikram Yoga Prague offers seven classes a week taught in English, and many more in Czech by instructors trained by Bikram himself. Just don’t be afraid to sweat—it’s not called “hot” yoga for nothing. You’ll hit those sun salutations in a room heated to 42° C (105° F). Namaste. Single lessons start at 360 lessons for a one session, costing less with larger packages.

Plzeňská 8, 150 00 Praha 5 Křižíkova 213/44, 186 00 Praha 8 There’s no better motivation to work out than a fancy gym. That’s why we’re heading to Holmes Place, the sleek fitness center and spa with locations in both Anděl and Karlín. Here, gym goers can take a variety of group classes from cycling to martial arts, or schedule a session with a personal trainer if one-on-one is more your style. Test out the center’s gym with a one-day pass for 290 Kč, and once you’re hooked, membership plans start at 1990 Kč per month. While the center doesn’t offer group classes purely in English, most instructors are happy to adapt their lessons for English speakers—just be sure to let them know at the start of class. And don’t forget to reward yourself with a relaxing treatment at the Holmes spa afterward.

Malá Štěpánská 1929/9, Praha 2 The Crossfit fitness program has swept the globe since it was founded in 2000, and now, even Prague has its fair share of fanatics. If you’ve somehow managed to get this far without hearing about Crossfit, it’s a competitive fitness regimen that uses high-intensity (read: brutal) workouts in a barebones gym setting to build strength and endurance. Not scared off yet? There are a number of Crossfit gyms (or as followers like to call them, “boxes”) across the city, where you can sweat out your W.O.D. (“workout of the day”). Just make sure to brush up on your Crossfit lingo first.

Resolution: Quit Smoking

Resolution: Relax

Congratulations—you’ve decided to quit smoking. The good news is, finding support in Prague isn’t as hard as you might think.

Navigating the lékárna

Nicotine patches, mints, gum, sprays, and other products are available without a prescription at Czech lékárnas, or pharmacies, around Prague. And you won’t have to fumble with your language, since the word for “nicotine” in Czech is the easy cognate “nikotin.” Fair warning, there's only a few lékárnas open past 7pm. so make sure you're stocked up.

Vinohradský Dům: Beer Spa

Legerova 758/60, Praha 2 When you’re thinking of health, beer doesn’t always come to mind. But Hotel Vinohradský Dům might change your view. The hotel’s new beer spa (yes, you read that right) adds a microelement- and vitamin B-rich beer to warm bath water. The result is rejuvenated skin, stress relief, oh, and an unlimited beer tap included with the price. Bottoms up.

How Healthy is Beer? Maybe there’s a reason the Czech phrase for “cheers”—na zdraví—translates roughly to “here’s to your health.” As much as we blame alcohol for our problems, there’s actually a wealth of research showing that moderate beerdrinking (keyword: moderate!) can be good for your heart, bones, kidneys, and even your skin and hair. By moderate, we mean one 12-ounce serving per day for women, two per day for men.

Beer can help lower bad cholesterol and aid digestion.

To be clear, this is no reason to binge drink—consuming too much alcohol can wreak havoc on your health. But when you’re living in the country with the highest rate of beer consumption in the world, you’ve got to think of some reason to justify it. Here are ours.

Beer may prevent kidney stones.

A 30 cl glass of beer—and especially dark beer— contains up to one gram of soluble fibre. While this may not seem like a lot, soluble fibre both aids digestion and lowers levels of LDL cholesterol (AKA “bad” cholesterol), and just two glasses of beer can provide 10 percent of your daily recommended fibre intake. Wine, on the other hand, doesn’t contain any soluble fibre at all.

Beer is chock-full of vitamins and minerals.

Beer has been long-known for its high levels of vitamin B, including vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12. But it also contains high levels of potassium, calcium, and phosphorus, which help promote a healthy diet.

Beer may protect the brain against Alzheimer’s.

This is not a drill. Though it may not help you remember what you did last night, beer may protect against degenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, according to a 2015 study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. This is thanks to xanthohumol, a compound in hops used to flavor beer.

Beer can help build strong bones.

The high levels of dietary silicon in beer can help raise bone density. So don’t feel too bad next time you skip the gym and head to U Dobrenskych or Beer Geek for a brew (or three) instead.

Ever found yourself sprinting to the WC after a couple of beers? The good news is, the diuretic effects of beer may actually help prevent kidney stones. Drinking one 12-ounce serving of beer per day can reduce your risk of getting a kidney stone by 41 percent, according to a 2013 study in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Beer can be an effective sleep aid.

Odds are, you’ve already experienced with this one. But what you probably didn’t know is that beer contains lactoflavin and nicotinic acid, both of which promote sleep.

Beer supports a healthy heart.

Numerous studies have found that those who drink a little over a pint of beer per day have a reduced risk of suffering from heart attacks, stroke and heart disease. Unfortunately, this doesn’t prevent you from catching the feels after one too many glasses.

Beer can be good for your skin and hair.

High levels of ferulic acid in beer help protect skin from sun damage, and the many vitamins found in your brew can help reduce acne. The malt in beer nourishes hair and promotes growth, while yeast strengthens and volumizes. There’s a reason Prague’s Hotel Vinohradský Dům is home to a beer spa, where you can bathe in the stuff in a process known as balneotherapy.

while you're in prague... 12 things to cross off your bucket list

Let’s be honest: 2016 wasn’t the best. We lost one too many greats—R.I.P. David Bowie, Prince, Mohamed Ali, and Alan Rickman, to name just a few—and the world seems more unpredictable than ever. The good news is, there’s never been a better time to say screw it. That’s why this year, we’re making it a goal to check some items off our bucket list, from getting inked to racing a car and even flying a plane. Here’s how to do all these things and a few more in and around Prague.

2. Shoot a gun.

If you’re looking learn a new skill in 2017 and have never been to a shooting range, kill two birds in one stone and add shooting a gun to your bucket list. Travel agency Prague Tours Direct is our pick for a thrilling experience that doesn’t skimp on safety. Their shooting trips are taught in English, and include transport to and from scenic shooting venues. After your lesson, you’ll test your skills with an AK47, M16, glock, magnum, pump action shotgun and sniper rifle in a competitive shooting session, where the winner receives a diploma. Prague Tours Direct, Dlouhá 705/16, Staré Město, Praha 1

1. Get a tattoo.

Prague may not be world-famous for its tattoo artists, but it is famous for its record beer consumption—and let’s be honest, the two tend to go hand in hand. Luckily, there are a couple of talented tattoo artists here. You can find them at Tribo Tattoo, a well-respected parlour with locations in New Town and Smíchov. Our tip: if you’re looking to have hair removed to show off your tat, check out the Altos dermatologic clinic at Karlovo Namesti’s Atrium shopping center and make sure you have it done BEFORE getting inked. Already having regrets? Altos also does tattoo removal. (You’re welcome.) Tribo Tattoo, Lidická 883/8, Smíchov, Praha 5, and Klimentská 1203/2, Nové Město, Praha 1 12

4. Fly in a hot air balloon. 3. Race a car.

Up for a joy ride? We recommend Enjoy Racing, a race track located on the Tchořovice airport circuit a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Prague. Get behind the driver’s seat of the Formula Renault 2.0, with rides starting at 3,242 Kc (about 129 euros) for four rounds. That includes driving instruction, plus your helmet and riding boots. Enjoy Racing at Letiště Tchořovice, 388 01 Tchořovice

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | JANUARY 2017

Believe it or not, hot air ballooning is actually better suited to winter weather, and the propane burner will keep you quite warm. Get your adrenaline fix and enjoy panoramic views from 500 meters above ground with Ballooning.cz, which offers sightseeing flights here in Prague. You’ll drift over the picturesque Konopiště Castle, situated 40 kilometers south of Prague, and enjoy a ceremonial champagne toast upon landing. Fancy.

Ballooning.CZ, Moskevská 1548/92, Praha 10

8. Take a boat ride through Prague. 5. Pet a big cat.

If you’re brave enough, Kontaktní Zoopark just outside Prague offers visitors quality face time with tigers, leopards, and other exotic species. Hey, its name doesn’t translate to “Contact Zoo” for nothing—the park rescues these animals and raises them around humans. Don’t forget your camera, and you must have a reservation. Kontaktní Zoopark, Na Výsluní 530, 252 45 Zvole

Maybe a boat ride isn’t the first thing you think of as bucket list material. But take a scenic cruise along the Vltava River and you’ll understand why it’s a must. For boat tours, we recommend River Boats Prague, which offers cruises from one to three hours and views of Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, the Rudolfinum, and Vysehrad. See their ad on page 17. Dvořákovo waterfront (Štefánikův under the bridge), wharf no.16

9. Go skiing.

Around here, the belief is there's no reason to even have cold weather if you can't do something sporty. If you're ready to try your hand at skiing, then check out the largest provider of day ski tours in the Czech Republic. With at least one bus mountain-bound every day from Prague, prices include free ski rental, free instructor services, and one-of-a-kind on-board entertainment , all starting at under 30 euros. The best part is, you have a full day of skiing and arrive back in time not to spoil your dinner plans.

11. Go bungee-jumping.

It doesn’t get much more extreme than bungee jumping. Our pick is the 36-meter-high Harrachov TV Tower, a freestyle bungee jumping destination located within a skiing complex 145 meters above town. Jumps start at 1486 Kc per person, or 55 euros. Coming straight from the slopes? No problem—you don’t even have to take your snowboard off for the jump. www.activeczech.com

www.cityski.cz

6. Sleep in a castle.

Start the year off like royalty with a stay inside one of Prague’s many stunning castles. The Nové Město nad Metují Castle, a Renaissance-style castle located two hours east of Prague, offers a few rooms for guests. Down South, there’s the Jemniště Castle, a Baroque structure with three apartments available for rent. And for that extra touch of luxury, head to Chateau Herálec, a boutique hotel housed inside a romantic castle an hour south of Prague that specializes in spa and relaxation. Nové Město nad Metují, Husovo nám. 1201, 549 01 Nové Město nad Metují Jemniště Castle, 257 01 Postupice Chateau Herálec, Herálec 1, 582 55 Herálec

7. Stop time.

Okay, maybe we’re exaggerating a little. But with a range of botox, laser and rejuviderm services, Esthetic Medical clinic is the closest thing to stopping the clock. New year, new you, right? Esthetic Medical, Křižíkova 159/56, Karlín, Praha 8

10. Learn to fly.

Kick of 2017 with a plane ride in the pilot seat— kind of. Hop on the Boeing 737 NG flight simulator at MyAirlines.cz training center to try your hand at flying risk-free. The center includes a range of simulation packages from serious pilot training to emergency landing practice. From throttle motors to rudder pedals and every last button, the simulator is an exact replica of the real Boeing, so you won’t even notice you’re not actually in the air. Don’t worry, there’s room for your entourage, too—the plane accommodates up to 10 guests, served by real stewardesses.

12. Drive a tank.

You read that right. Travel agency Active Czech offers adrenaline junkies 30-minute rentals of two tanks—the authentic Russian T-55 tank, which was used in the 1940s, or the T-72 tank, the most popular tank used by Warsaw pact soldiers. Artillary not included. www.activeczech.com

TRAM & METRO MAP Helpful Hint for Visitors: To look like a local on the Metro, wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, just don’t act like an idiot.

Hipster Crossing

COCKTAIL GUIDE

“I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." - DEAN MARTIN Cocktail bars in Prague get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).

TrETTER’S 8@ V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz

The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.

PARLOUR 8$ Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz

Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. The good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English—there is no menu. Instead, your bartender will ask what you like and offer suggestions from there.

L'flEUR 9$

V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz

L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The bar has a nice buzz to it inside, and for a while, we almost forgot what year it was. There’s a lot of choices on the drink menu, and the signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list.

ANONYMOUS BAR 9# Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069 www.anonymousbar.cz

It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.

PROLOG 8*

Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take the drink menu. An American Physician weighed patients just before and after death in 1907, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams—a moment that inspired Prolog’s 21-drink menu, which serves a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Seven of those 21 drinks are named after the Seven Deadly Sins, like the Sloth: a concoction of Magellan gin, chamomile cordial and prosecco, all which dawdle on a velvet pillow filled with chamomile.

BUGSY’S 9%

LE VALMONT 9)

HEMINGWAY’S 9!

Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont—no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.

Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. Imaginative drinks (like cocktails served from tiny gasoline canisters and perfume bottles) and friendly service are two of the benchmarks that make Hemingway’s one of our favorites. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Hemingway’s is almost always busy, so we would recommend a reservation or you’ll find yourself waiting outside.

BLACK ANGEL’S 8# Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 +420 224 213 807 www.blackangels.cz

Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.

BAR & BOOKS 8%8^ Manesova 64, Praha 2 +420 222 724 581

Týnská 19, Praha 1 +420 224 815 122

Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business, and if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your drink, this is the place to be.

BONVIVANT’s CTC 8&

Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862

Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. When it comes to ordering, forget the menu and just talk to your bartender. Each is a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well.

Pařížská 1068/10 - Praha 1 +420 224 810 287 www.bugsysbar.cz

Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up in 1992 just after the Velvet Revolution. The place has seen many changes over the years, but the one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum.

Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. Cloud 9 sky bar and lounge 9^ Pobřežní 1, 186 00 Prague 8 + 420 224 842 999 www.cloud9.cz

Perched 40 meters up atop the Hilton Hotel, Cloud 9 Sky Bar and Lounge is more than just a hotel bar. Nestled near several international companies with large expat workforces, Cloud 9 always has a diverse crowd. The drink menu is expansive, with a focus on gin and tonic creations from around the world, enriched by natural ingredients and paired with delicious bites and snacks for sharing with friends. Thursday nights feature DJ events and live performances.

Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it— the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs..

At the western end of the park is the Wellington arch which was built in 1826 to celebrate the Duke of Wellington’s victories in battle. Similarly is possible to celebrate by combining gin Tanqueray No.10, fresh lemon juice, basil, egg white, sugar syrup and celery bitters.

CLUB GUIDE

Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT

Roxy 6%

Dlouhá 33, Prague 1 The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.

Lucerna 6^ Vodičkova 36

One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana.

Cross Club 6& Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz

Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek.

Meet Factory 6* Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz

This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike.

M1 Lounge 6(

Klub 007 7$

M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. As an added plus, M1 is also conveniently located in the very center of the city.

Supporting underground and non-mainstream music since 1969, 007 is a legendary club on the Prague music scene. It’s history is rooted in student dissent, providing a welcoming space to students disenchanted with the former regime. 007 offers a healthy assortment of unique bands, DJs, and other musical acts. Music diversity is an emphasis: electro, indie, hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...

James Dean 7) V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/

Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for its larger-than-life statue of James Dean, it also serves some of the best burgers, milkshakes, and French fries in town.

NEONE 7@

Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/ Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans.

Radost FX 7# Bělehradská 120, Prague 2 radostfx.cz

First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague.

Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.

Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass.

U Sudu 7*

Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz Invisible for those who don’t know where it is and yet in heart of the town. U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic.

HARLEYS 7(

Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1

Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a two-minute walk from Old Town Square. The entire placed is decked out in rock memorabilia ranging from Harley Davidson gear to Ramones and Jack Daniels posters.

la loca r

Odborů 278/4, Prague 2 Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Also, some of the most iconic pieces of art in Prague are situated at La Loca.

Tomáš Honz: Když jsem šel z plenéru Galerie pod Palmovkou Zenklova 34

The foyer of the theatre pod Palmovkou has changed two months ago in a small art gallery. Honz is known for the ability to combine traditional painting from the late 19th century with contemporary themes and modern technologies. His paintings can be described as delicate a hand painted landscapes, often with a mysterious atmosphere. His paintings were created under the opened sky, in the face of a theme, which underscores the authenticity of paintings and offers viewers a strong experience. Painting outdoor is a fundamental pillar for Tomas. “When you’re out and it’s cold, the wind blows, it’s raining and your hands shake, it’s all reflected into the picture. It’s not like working in the studio, or doing paintings based on photos” explains Tomas. Exhibit is open through Tuesday, January 3. Painting

Henri Rousseau, known as the Le Douanier (1844–1910), is one of the most important artists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His works attracted not only intellectuals like Guillaume Apollinaire and collectors such as Wilhelm von Uhde, but also many artists. In his paintings he anticipated or resolved similar problems to Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, etc. He was highlighted as a source of inspiration in particular by the group known as Der Blaue Reiter, headed by Wassily Kandinsky. Winter Variations

Kinsky Palace Staroměstské náměstí 12

The exhibition _The Art of Asia_ has been modified to reflect the upcoming season. The Chinese artworks selected for the winter 2016/2017 include several winter landscapes, one of the most popular genres in Chinese painting, as well as the precious anonymous portrait of a man in winter outfit from the collection of Chinese ancestral portraits. The genre of flower and bird painting is represented by the theme known as “three friends of winter,” in which the pine, the bamboo and the plum tree refer to moral pureness and resilience of a scholar. The exhibition of Japanese Buddhist art presents pairs of scrolls depicting the wind god, Fujin and the god of winter storm, Raijin. The popular “beautiful maidens” motif can be admired in its quintessential form on Buzen’s screen from the turn of the 19th century, which depicts Rafu-sen and five other beauties under the snow-covered pine. Kiyochika’s scene from the Sino-Japanese war provides an interesting “journalistic” view of the winter landscape. The exhibition of the art of southern and south-eastern Asia presents six Indian miniatures – genre scenes from the circle of eighteenth-century Mughal painting and paintings from Jaipur depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The newly installed Tibetan thangkas represent both wrathful and peaceful deities, as well as important figures of Tibetan Buddhism 150 to 300 CZK Collection, Painting, Portrait, Exhibition

Andrea del Sarto: Madonna and Child Sternberg palace Hradčanské náměstí 15

This intimate exhibition presents the work of the Florentine painter Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530), whose painting of the Madonna and Child from Opočno Castle has recently been restored. The technological investigation of the work, together with art-historical studies, brought new and interesting findings. The picture of the Madonna and Child from Opočno Castle was to be found, at latest from 1807, in the collections of the noble family of Colloredo-Mansfeld and from then onwards it adorned the interiors of the family residences in Döbling, Prague and Opočno. For a long time, however, it was considered to be a copy - in fact a total of 34 copies of this painting were preserved! In the past this picture suffered considerable damage - restoration, however, has rehabilitated the painting and enabled it to be included once again among the works of Andrea del Sarto. The results of the investigation are presented in the exhibition in the form of photographic documentation and an accompanying text. The National Heritage Institute has kindly loaned the painting. "I have always been a big fan of motor vehicles. I had the Jawa Pioneer motorcycle, the Velorex Trike and two Trabants. I used to work in the Jawa factory and so motor vehicles were close to me. When I retired, I couldn’t manage to pay for a car anymore and so I started to ride a bicycle. I used to ride a mountain bike for a long time and now I have this tricycle. During the winter, I ride with it to a grocery store and from spring till autumn I take my dog with me and we go on trips. For many years I’ve ridden to the Šumava Mountains area – it takes us about fourteen days to get there, we go on secondary roads and sleep in a 34

tent, between fields or at the edge of a forest. My dog is a German spitz, he’s a great guardian. But he’s guarding up to the point that I cannot stay in camps – he cannot stand other people and keeps on barking at them. We are a special duo. During each journey, he sits back there, in a travel bag. He sits there and barks. When I arrive into a South Bohemian village, some people already know me: 'So you’ve came back!‘ They welcome me as if I was a friend of theirs. They lead a calm life over there and so it’s quite a sight for them to see a granny from Prague who arrives on a tricycle and with a dog! For me it feels great as well because I

can always remember the journey to Šumava for the rest of the year! I am all alone in my life now but I don’t care. I really don’t. Because I always bring back a stock of photos from the journey and that’s enough for me. When I later look at them, I think: ‚This was a beautiful place, this was great, this is when the weather turned bad, this was terrible!‘ I hear how people often say: 'Poor men and women! It must be so terrible to be alone on Christmas Eve!‘ Well, maybe for some people. But for me? I don’t care! I take my summer photos and I’m set off on a journey again!“

Try a combination of great taste, a unique view and stylish interior. "I base my cooking on French cuisine, which is closest to my heart. However, the Ginger & Fred restaurant has an international menu. We use a lot of local ingredients and we cooperate mainly with local suppliers,” says chef Rudolf Doležal. Ginger & Fred is located on the seventh floor of the Dancing House, where you can enjoy original dishes in the company of works of modern art and with a view of Prague Castle. We change the menu four times a year and we also offer daily specials in addition to our regular menu. In summer, you must not miss out on our broad selection of ice creams and sorbets. Ginger & Fred is an ideal place for business and private lunches, romantic dinners and company parties.
