A letter from the first president of the Czech Republic Václav Havel to The Cimrman Theatre , thanking them for preserving the legacy of Czech genius Jara Cimrman.

perhaps what the world needs now... We have to admit, sometimes the world feels gloomy these days. No matter where you're from, perhaps life just doesn't feel as rosy as it used to. We're faced with an array of problems from terrorism to multiple humanitarian crises and political turmoil. Change always brings about a bit of uncertainty, and of course with it a serious, straight-faced undertone. Sometimes, we just feel, well, a bit hopeless. In moments like these, the world needs the likes of Jara Cimrman, [our feature story this month, page 9]. People like Cimrman remind

us that anything is possible. They remind us to keep our heads up when someone beats us to the punch, like Thomas Edison did Cimrman with his inventions on multiple occasions. Cimrman teaches us to think differently, as he did when fixing the legs on the Eiffel Tower for Mr. Eiffel. Or perhaps to persevere like Cimrman, who relentlessly sent his plays to playwright Ladislav Stroupežnický, before finally being told "please no longer write me, and if possible, do not write at all." Or maybe what the world really needs are more

people like Zdeněk Svěrák, Ladislav Smoljak and the other Cimrmanologists who have taken on the duty of "educating" Czechs about Cimrman since 1966. Their “research” and work has provided this beautiful country with hope, laughter, absurdity and pride through the bad and good times it's faced. Our feature story this month isn’t just about Jara Cimrman, but also the movement to spread his message to America. Let's face it, they could use a good laugh these days. Enjoy Prague and we’ll see you next month!

THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO this month

Dave Matthews and tim reynolds sunday, April 2, 7:30PM

We love the full Dave Matthews Band, but we think Dave’s quintessential work is alongside guitarist Tim Reynolds. The two long-time friends shed all the normal DMB fanfare and play together acoustically. The result is an evening of raw talent, banging out some of your favorite DMB hits among other tracks. Want a preview of the live show? Check out one of our favorites - the “Live at Radio City” album. We're also excited about the fact they'll be playing in a fairly intimate setting - the 3000 capacity Forum Karlin. Chances are, this will sell out, but if you can - grab a ticket. It will be worth it. Tickets on sale at www.livenation.cz. Where: Forum Karlín Pernerova 51, 186 00 Praha 8-Karlín

Mladí Ladí Jazz Fetival all month long

The main goal of this jazz festival is to attract a young audience back to jazz music. Unfortunately, it seems like the past several years have broght the focus of jazz into the tourism market - making tickets and drinks both unaffordable to students. This festival promises a few weeks of jazz at affordable prices. Defintely some great shows at great prices if you're a jazz lover. Check out www.mladiladijazz.cz for the full listings. michael winslow monday, april 3

Michael Winslow is billed as "The Man of 10,000 Sound Effects", but for those of us who grew up watching him as Sgt. "Motormouth" in the Police Academy movie franchise during the 1980s, he was a god. We spent a lot of time back then trying to perfect our beatbox, robot and laser effects, much to the dismay of our parents. These days, Michael has a stand-up show utilizing his vocal talents. We've seen clips of the show and it's pretty entertaining. Where: Lucerna - Great Hall Štepánská 61, Prague 1

THUNdercat

Wednesday, april 5, 9PM Thundercat's resume just leaves us confused. First off, his dad drummed for the American motown mainstay The Temptations. So you think the dude would be all soul. But, somwhere along the way, he took a few strange turns. Take for instance a long stint playing for punk band Suicidal Tendencies. We're not quite sure how he went from that to providing the architecture for Kendrick Lamar's best work, but there's magic somewhere in there. His latest release "Drunk" is is a 23-track epic journey into the often hilarious, sometimes dark mind of the Grammywinning singer/bassist and finds a few of his friends joining him along the way including: Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Wiz Khalifa, Kamasi Washington and Brainfeeder mastermind Flying Lotus. Queenie

thursday, April 13 Okay, okay...we know. It's a tribute band. But seriously, we've been fans of these guys for a while. They don't just look like Queen, they sound like them, working with audio engineers and lighting experts to create a high enery top-quality production on stage. Sometimes you hear a twinge of their native Czech accent, but Queenie is always a treat to watch and if you're a fan of Queen at all, we guarantee you'll want to see this show again. Where: Divadlo Kalich Jungmannova 9, Praha 1

Chelsea Wolfe + Wear Your Wounds Wednesday, April 26

Goth diva Chelsea Wolfe returns to Prague. Dark and gloomy, Wolfe's latest album Abyss (2015) incorporates elements of neofolk, electronic and metal. If you've not heard of her - you may still know her music. It's been featured in promotional material for the television series Game of Thrones and Fear the Walking Dead as well as in How to Get Away with Murder. Street food festivalHolešovice Sunday, April 23, 10am - 8pm

If you're in town visiting and look for something to do, we'll give you a few good reasons to check this out...first off, the amazing street food (of course). In fact, after last year's fesival, we're going to not eat on Saturday in preparation for some of the best street food in Europe the next day. Second, it's in the parking lot of the world famous Cross Club. If you're visiting, the backdrop of the bizarre metal sculptures that make up the Cross Club make it worth the visit alone.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | APRIL 2017

Jara Cimrman was a Czech genius, inventor, sportsman, criminalist, poet, writer, philosopher, and national hero. There's only one small problem...

Image courtesty of Cimrman Theatre

By Hannah Burns In late 1966, in the small northern Czech town of Liptákov, a mysterious chest was discovered after being buried in the countryside for nearly a century. And by an incredible stroke of luck, this monumentally important moment in Czech history was captured and broadcast on live radio to Czechs across the country. As listeners sat fixated to their radios, researchers at the scene narrated a seemingly endless

discovery of manuscripts, documents and other artifacts in the found chest detailing the incredible and almost unbelievable life and work of a man that history seemed to have forgotten: Jára Cimrman. Cimrman, it appeared, was a universal genius of any and all disciplines. He invented puppet shows in Paraguay, established schools of criminology, music and ballet in Vienna, assisted Marie Curie with studies that won her two Nobel Prizes,

The world's most knowledgable experts on Cimrman, or “Cimrmanologists”, (including Smoljak and Svěrák in the center) stand outside the northern Czech village of Liptákov, where the Cimrman discovery was first made. It's obviously a real place. After all, there's a sign.

Jara Cimrman's physical appearance remains a mystery as it's said he refused photographs. This auto-bust which Cimrman sculpted himself remains one of the only surviving clues. Unfortunately, it's badly "worn out" as it is said to have been used as a template for hats by a hat maker in Cimrman's village of Liptákov for many years.

wired Thomas Edison’s first lightbulb and accommodated Gustave Eiffel in Paris. He invented the telephone long before Alexander Graham Bell, who found he had three missed calls from Cimrman upon his first connection. Traveling Switzerland, Cimrman came only seven meters away from the North Pole, almost becoming the first human being to ever reach the top of planet Earth. It would be one of the tens of dozens of “near misses” that plagued Cimrman’s life of genius. It’s somewhat hard to believe that until that fateful day in Liptákov, the world had forgotten Jára Cimrman— especially considering that Cimrman had even chronicled many of his accomplishments through hundreds of plays he authored over his lifetime. But of course it should be hard to believe—none of it is true. Any of it. Not Jára Cimrman, his accomplishments, nor the town of Liptákov itself. Nonetheless, the moments that played out through the radio on that cool winter evening in 1966 would

launch the life of Jára Cimrman, and the career of its creators. As many stories of conception begin, Cimrman was born one late night over a bottle of vodka. Writers Zdeněk Svěrák and the late Ladislav Smoljak were imagining “the perfect Czech,” one-upping each other with potential virtues, accomplishments and endeavors if such a man existed. By the end of the night, he did. Over the years that followed, the two writers would dream up many mystical and far-fetched tales of the unsung genius. From the beginning, Cimrman was a lighthearted poke at Czech’s everpresent struggle into world-relevance and extreme national pride. Now, what started as a parody has become

the company has put on nearly 260 shows per year since 1967. And while there have been a few changes in the cast (including the death of Smoljak in 2010), the shows normally sell out months in advance. For Svěrák and Smoljak, their professional passions were split neatly into two disciplines: film and theater. One never trumped the other, considering the success of the Cimrman Theatre and projects like the Academy Award winning 1996 film Kolja, in which the duo starred, and Svěrák wrote the screenplay. And just how big has Cimrman become? Cimrman’s significance was officially recognized in 2005, when he was voted “The Greatest Czech” in history through a program inspired by the BBC’s “100 Greatest Britons.” Ultimately, Cimrman was disqualified for the minor technicality of his lack of physical existence. That hasn’t weakened proof of Cimrman’s existence, though. A permanent exhibition in the basement of Petřín Lookout Tower showcases some of Cimrman’s greatest inventions, including a

broom meant for sweeping corners, a bicycle designed for firefighters and a necktie brush. The more adventurous can head to the Cimrman Museum in the North, located at a lighthouse in Příchovice, south of the Jizera Mountains (that's not a typo.. it's really a lighthouse in the mountains). Curious to experience the comedic genius of Cimrman but unable to speak Czech? The Cimrman shows were considered virtually untranslatable until English playwright and actor Brian Stewart

tackled the idea, alongside Emilia Machalová and Svěrák’s daughter, Hanka Jelínková. Thus, the Cimrman English Theater was born. Stewart isn’t a comedy newcomer, having starred in the original British “The Office” with Ricky Gervais and penned the awardwinning play “Castro’s Beard.” As some of the original cast members enter their eighties, the Cimrman phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down. In the words of the great Jara Cimrman, “Life is the best school of life.”

one of the most prominent facets of Czech culture and humor. Following the success of Cimrman on the original radio show (“Nealkoholická Vinárna U Pavouka,” or “The Non-Alcoholic Wine Bar at the Spider”), Svěrák and Smoljak assembled the first Cimrman performance troupe in 1967, deeming themselves experts in the field of Cimrman—or “Cimrmanologists”, as they would become known. The motley cast of mostly backstage hands, lighting and curtain operators had little to no acting experience, which Svěrák and Smoljak found endearing. Alongside Svěrák and Smoljak , Jiří Šebánek, Miloň Čepelka and Karel Velebný, put on the first Cimrman show, “Akt,” at Malostranská Beseda in October 1967. It wasn’t long before the troupe established a company solely dedicated to the study and staging of Cimrman’s “newly discovered” plays, promptly named the Theatre of Jára Cimrman, located in Žižkov. The shows gained a mass of popularity and interest among Czechs that is in full force today—

Cimrman conquers "the new world" Cimrman English Theatre heads to America this month with documentary crew in tow Walking into the rustic Jára Cimrman Theatre, it’s not hard to feel a sense of legacy. With corridors lined with black and white photographs capturing Cimrman’s 50-year history, the theatre is a window into Czech humor and culture. Given the remarkable atmosphere, it’s almost impossible to tell that the theatre’s namesake—Jára Cimrman—never actually existed. If you know anything about Cimrman, you’ll know that this is precisely the joke. But you may find yourself a bit lost unless you’re fluent in Czech. With productions full of wordplay, double meanings and clever references, even those who have studied Czech as a second language for years don’t always understand the sharp wit and linguistic nuances of the scripts at Cimrman Theatre. But in recent years, a group of inspired, Englishspeaking actors have helped conquer the one key factor standing in the way of Cimrman reaching a broader audience—the language barrier. It began as an unimaginable task. Due to its rich portrayal of Czech history, humor based in ref-erences to Czech culture and blurred lines

between reality and history, the concept of an Eng-lish version of Cimrman’s plays was deemed impossible—even by its creators. In American and British terms, Cimrman has drawn comparison to Forrest Gump and the dry comedy absurdity of Monty Python. But in 2014, at the risk of complete failure (but with the consent of Cimrman co-creator Zdeněk Svěrák), English actor and playwright Brian Stewart, alongside co-translator Emilia Machalová and Svěrák’s daughter, Hanka Jelínková, devoted over a year and a half to fully translating Cimrman’s “The Stand-In.” “We beleive if you really want to understand Czech culture, you really need to understand Jára Cimrman,” explained Stewart. After completing their translated version of the play, they gathered Svěrák and a small Englishspeaking audience at the Cimrman Theatre to test their efforts on the live audience. Immediately, the audience was hooked, to the relief of the cast and writers. The Cimrman English Theatre was born. Cimrman Plays are divided into two parts.

The first act is always given in a deadpan lecturestyle format, with explanations and insight of Cimrnan’s work presented by experts deemed “Cimrmanologists.” Of course, it doesn’t take too much to recognize this as a classic comedy set-up, preparing the viewer for the absurdity which lies ahead. The second half is the work itself—and always an adventure in the unexpected. The current troupe is compiled of six featured actors hailing from the U.S., Britain and Australia: Brian Stewart, Adam Stewart, Michael Pitthan, Brian Caspe, Peter Hosking and Curt Matthew. The theatre puts on monthly (and nearly always soldout) performances of “The Stand-In” along with their most recent addition, “Conquest of the North Pole.” Suprisingly, the audiences aren't always native English speakers. In fact, Brian Stewart said he believes it's often filled with native Czech speakers, which he attributes to a mixture of curiousity on how the plays will translate and -Czechs with English speaking partners. In some cases, he said APRIL 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

it may also be spillover when the native Czech performances are sold out. Success over the past two years sparked a new idea—why stop with the English-speaking audience in Prague? An ambitious plan now seeks to land Cimrman in New York City. Company manager and actor Adam Stewart says the troupe has focused their off-stage time on fundraising and planning, in one month alone raising over $6 thousand. The troupe have three shows booked in New York City and two shows in Washington D.C., the nation’s capital, all with promising expectations for turnout. In addition to the general public, Stewart says audience members will likely include embassy officials and other dignitaries eager to see Cimrman’s arrival in America. There will also be a bit of Cimrman DNA on the trip to the states. David Smoljak, son of Cimrman cocreator Ladislav Smoljak (who passed away in 2010), plans to document Cimrman’s arrival in “the new world.” Smoljak will be filming a documentary for Czech Television focusing on the troupe’s journey to the United States, giving Czechs a first-hand view at how Cimrman is received on the international level. From the time he was just eight years old, the younger Smoljak recalls Cimrman being a part of his life. As a child, Smoljak says he was sometimes jealous of the fictitious character’s demands of his father’s time and attention, but his later youth swelled with pride in seeing audience reactions to the works. He speaks of Cimrman like a close family friend he never met. “Svěrák and my father often did their work

outside of Prague in a weekend house our families shared,” Smoljak reminisced. “I can still hear the sounds of them working, with one sitting and typing while the other stood and made coffee.” Smoljak embraces the idea of his father and Svěrák’s work making the transition to English, and it’s easy to see why. The passionate group of actors in the English Theatre believe in Cimrman beyond just its comedic genius, seeing it as a way to give English-speakers a peek into Czech popular culture. “To be a part of this performance in the theatre home of Jara Cimrman is truly an honor and a pleasure,” said actor Michael Pitthan, ultimately speaking for the entire troupe. “Jára Cimrman epitomizes Czechs as the underdog, or the

unrecognized genius. Cimrman came around in a time where you couldn’t say what you wanted, and Cimrman has since represented that kind of comedic relief that we all need. That is something we believe everyone should be able to witness.” The Cimrman English Theatre embarks on their journey to New York this month, completely supported by the generosity of the public. There’s still time to chip in by visiting www.cimrman-inamerica.com, with some pretty great perks for donating. David Smoljak’s documentary is also selfand public-funded, and donations can be made at www.hithit.com/cs/project/3392/cimrmandobyva-ameriku.

TRAM & METRO MAP Helpful Hint for Visitors: To look like a local on the Metro, wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, just don’t act like an idiot.

Hipster Crossing

COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).

Tretter's 8@

V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz

The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.

Parlour 8$

Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. The good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English—there is no menu. Instead, your bartender will ask what you like and offer suggestions from there.

L'Fleur 9$

V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list.

Anonymous Bar 9# Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069

www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.

Prolog 8*

Nádražní 57/108, Praha 5 +420 775 005 007 www.prologbar.cz

Bar and Books 8%8^

Cash Only Bar 8(

Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business, and if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your drink, this is the place to be.

Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it— the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.

Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1

Oblaca 9@

Bonvivant's CTC 8&

Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take the drink menu. An American Physician weighed patients just before and after death in 1907, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams—a moment that inspired Prolog’s 21-drink menu, which serves a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Seven of those 21 drinks are named after the Seven Deadly Sins.

Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862

Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well.

Le Valmont 9)

Bugsy's 9%

Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont— no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.

Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum.

Hemingway's 9!

Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 +420 773 974 764 www.hemingwaybar.cz

Black Angel's 8#

Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.

Liliova 3, Prague 1 +420 778 087 117 (no reservations) www.cashonlybar.cz

Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended.

Žižkov Television Tower Mahlerovy sady 2699/1, Praha 3 + 420 210 320 086 www.oblaca.cz

High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. And what better laboratory for Števlík to create his unconventional concoctions than high above Prague in one of the most unconventional buildings in Europe.

La Bodeguita del Medio 9&

Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1 +420 224 813 922 www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz

With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). Bodeguita is synonymous with great entertainment, Mojitos, wild parties, dancing, original gastronomy and unforgettable experiences.

CLUB GUIDE

Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT

Roxy 6%

Dlouhá 33, Prague 1

The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.

Lucerna 6^ Vodičkova 36

One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana.

Cross Club 6& Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz

Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek.

Meet Factory 6* Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz

This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike.

M1 Lounge 6( Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com

M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not

hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. As an added plus, M1 is also conveniently located in the very center of the city.

hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...

James Dean 7)

One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.

V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/

Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for its larger-than-life statue of James Dean, it also serves some of the best burgers, milkshakes, and French fries in town.

Retro 7%

Francouzská 75/4, 120 00 , Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz

Bubenské nábřeží 306, Prague 7 http://prague.sasazu.com

SaSaZu is a clubbers paradise with a feel of decadence as soon as you enter & not just an ordinary paradise but one with enough space for 2,000 partygoers. Located in the cool neighborhood of Holesovice, this hip club with it stylish, sleek interior attracts visitors and locals alike and impresses with top quality House, Dance, Funk, Ethno and Pop.

Radost FX 7#

Chapeau Rouge 7&

First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague.

Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass.

Klub 007 7$

Chaloupeckého 7 www.klub007strahov.cz

Supporting underground and non-mainstream music since 1969, 007 is a legendary club on the Prague music scene. It’s history is rooted in student dissent, providing a welcoming space to students disenchanted with the former regime. 007 offers a healthy assortment of unique bands, DJs, and other musical acts. Music diversity is an emphasis: electro, indie,

bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic.

Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Also, some of the most iconic pieces of art in Prague are situated at La Loca.

Café 80's 8)

You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation.

"When I was twenty-five, I woke up one morning and felt that my time was running out. I thought that I’d been here for a quarter of century and I was not satisfied with what I’d accomplished so far. And I didn’t want to wake up in a few years and to have the same feeling about my life. And so I asked myself the basic question: What can I do to be better? At that time I was quite lazy, I had a bad and badly paid job and I didn’t have much self-esteem. When I looked at myself into the mirror, I couldn’t find respect for “I come from the family Demartini which came to Prague in 15th century. Around 1710, my ancestors built houses in Lesser Town and founded a soap and perfume manufacture. They used to be main suppliers for the imperial court in Vienna. But we didn’t talk about such things when I was young – my grandma and my dad used to keep the silence so as we didn’t have any problems with the Communist regime. But when I was eight, I learnt that in Lesser Town, in Míšeňská Street, there were houses which used to belong to my family. At that time, we used to live in Garden City, in a block of flats and whenever we wanted to go to the city centre, 34

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | APRIL 2017

we used to say that we went to Prague. I was a solitary child and so I packed my stuff one day and set off on a journey to Prague. There wasn’t even a metro at that time. But I found Lesser Town and I found Míšeňská Street. However, I had no idea which houses to look for. There were two ladies passing by and so I asked if they knew where was Mr. Demartini’s soap and perfume factory. And they told me: ‘Well, girl, of course we know that! There is Mr. Štěpánek’s place and right there on the opposite side, that whole block, it’s five houses, that was it.’ You can still see the old chimney. And they also told me: ‘He was a nice man – they referred to my greatgranddad –, he really took good care of his employees!’ I felt very pleased. I went closer to the houses and when I was leaving, I remember stroking one. And that particular house we managed to save as the only one – we got it back in the restitution in 1998. When I heard the verdict of the court, I went to Olšany Cemetery to my ancestors’ grave. To tell them the news. I knew they would be pleased.” “As a child I imagined having airy curtains – I must

have see it in a fairy tale –, but the reality was far away. After the restitution, it took us ten years to achieve the settlement with the municipality regarding the sale of the second half of the house. We had to persuade them that we were serious. That we wanted to take care of the house. It was a ruin at that time which used to appear on the Internet as a shame of Prague. We didn’t have money for a renovation but it was my husband who decided to do as much as we could for the house. It still seems unbelievable but I’m fifty-two and I have a house which I stroked and which I furnished with airy curtains. My daughter opened a nice café in the courtyard for local people. It makes me happy. Because it doesn’t only matter that my kids have nice lives, what also matters is that they are able to work in this place. To be able to take care of the place and then pass it on. Because the family bond goes through history. And even though some people think that they die and that’s it, this bond goes back and forth in time.”
