BUILDING BEACH CONFIDENCE THAT SAVES LIVES
LEARNING THAT SAVES LIVES Our Portsea – Sorrento community has always understood the power of our beaches, but also its risks. That’s why the initiative of The Portsea Camp’s Pool to Beach Program in partnership with the Portsea Surf Life Saving Club has already made a meaningful impact and brought families closer to the water in a safer, more informed way.
Across Victoria, drowning remains a tragic and preventable reality. Last year alone, 52 lives were lost, with most incidents occurring at beaches during summer, closely followed by the Easter break. One of the leading causes? Rip currents, often misunderstood, frequently underestimated, and responsible for the majority of rescues.
Delivered over the weekend of the 27th of March side by side with the Portsea Camp and Portsea Surf Life Saving Club, this pilot program was designed to help bridge a critical gap and provide families, beginners, confident pool swimmers wanting to learn more about open water safety, new Australians and immigrant families who may be unfamiliar with our beach conditions and parents who want to feel confident supporting their children in the water with practical skills, knowledge and confidence to enjoy our beaches safely. Before attending the program, only a small number of participants felt confident identifying rip currents, while many had no confidence at all. This disconnect between confidence and capability is exactly where the Pool to Beach program steps in. Over a fully immersive weekend, families learned side-by-side, building not just individual skills, but shared understanding. From identifying hazards like rips, waves and rocks, to practising real-world responses in our beaches, the program focused on experience as much as education.
