Mission MISSION

THE POINT Community Development Corporation is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) dedicated to youth development and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. We work with our neighbors to celebrate the life and art of our community, an area traditionally defined solely in terms of its poverty, crime rate, poor schools and substandard housing. We believe the area’s residents, their talents and aspirations, are THE POINT’s greatest assets.

THE POINT offers a multi-faceted approach to asset-based community development. It’s programming falls within three main headings - Youth Development, Arts and Culture and Community Development - all aimed at the comprehensive revitalization of Hunts Point.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

THE POINT’s After School Program is a school year program that caters to 65 students from four local schools in the neighborhood of Hunts Point with homework help, academic support, and leadership through the arts. Our new staff had the pleasure of revamping the program through new workshops. We added Mazarte Mexican Folkloric Ballet, Blank Plate Jr., Reading Buddies through partnership with Literacy Inc., Music and Science. We continue to build on Arts Advocacy, Social Circus and Literacy programming through new & creative approaches.

Some highlights from this year include our Holiday celebrations where family engagement was emphasized. The staff created fun and educational lessons, and activities for each holiday. For our Halloween party, the kids dressed up in costumes, crafted masks, skeletons and jock-lanterns, and watched a movie about Dia de los Muertos. Families and staff also contributed to our annual Thanksgiving Potluck with homemade dishes. It was also a winter wonderland in our “Live From THE POINT” theatre production. At our Winter Holiday Party students combined arts & crafts,

snacks, and dancing with the cheer of receiving generous gift donations. In February and March the spotlight was on Black History and Women's Herstory. Students learned about black and female heroes in the arts, science, literature, sports, music and activism. After learning and having hands on activities, we had a fun game of trivia on important figures and heroes at the end of each month. Students were able to see themselves and possibility through these historic and present figures of color.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Students also participated in events and activities including the launch of the NEA 2017 Big Read at the Hunts Point Library, a trip to Variety Children's Charity holiday party in Queens, Passion Fair, and a tour of the “Hombres de Arcilla:Men of Clay” exhibition at THE POINT Campus with Carey Clark. They were also excited to have their mixed media portraits, created in a workshop on gentrification/displacement with House of Spoof Collective, featured in the exhibition “Mi Casa es Mi Casa”.

A.C.T.I.O.N. LITERACY

This year was an opportunity for students to take a creative approach to literacy. Emphasis was placed on having monthly themes that infused poetry, word games, trivia, art, and acting into lessons. The books we utilized inspired activities and opened up discussions about self-esteem, saving money, self-care, sharing, gratitude, poverty, traditions, world culture, heroism, and social justice.

Students also steadily increased their time reading library books and accomplished goals set at the beginning of the school year. We gave out journals for students to hold themselves accountable to their New Year’s goals and for free write when desired. This was a tremendous help in times when students faced internal & external conflict.

We also continued our Reading Buddies partnership with Literacy Inc. to have the 4th-8th graders buddy up and mentor the 1st-3rd graders. It was truly inspiring to see our students supersede what was asked of them and take their own approach to the activities in a thoughtful and responsible manner. One instance of this was when students were asked to collaborate on and share poetry for Women’s Herstory Month.

MATH & SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS With math and science at The Point the goal is to help the student gain an understanding of basic and advanced mathematical concepts in an education system surround by common core curriculum. We encourage hands on learning in group based activate to peak interest and curiosity for students on any grade levels. In math we move away from worksheet based learning to a more kid friendly approach.This year we use board games to reinforce counting with younger kids and strategic problem solving skills with those in third and fourth grade. The science experiments done at the point cover concepts from static electricity to the 3 states of matter. This year we have made our own ice cream from scratch using ice and salt, discovery new ways to blow up a balloon using baking soda and vinegar, to using balloons to move metallic objects around. We had many fun days (and messy ones) this year and we hope for many more to come!!

BLANK PLATE

Blank Plate Jr is a version of our Blank Plate Culinary Arts Program that engages Youth in the AfterSchool Program in internal resilience through healthy eating by cooking from recipes, reading & understanding menus and learning how to make healthier choices. Students from first grade and second grade learned how to read labels on soda cans and bottles to see how much sugar it contains. They also learned how to make ice cream in a bag, read a menu and figure out which type of dish goes on plates or in bowls. Students were able to enjoy different types of fruits & vegetables. When trying the food, they were surveyed on what they liked about the food and asked if they would recommend it to a family member to eat. Making recipes and teaching them about healthy eating makes them think about what they eat and be open to trying new foods. Over the course of the year, they’ve enjoyed their time learning and sharing the things they learned in class with each other and their family members. Just ask and they’ll be ready for making vanilla ice cream in a bag and having a shake up party anytime!

are focusing on scaling recipes, and designing the culinary experience for our Blank Plate Banquet Finale. Soup to nuts, the 'flow' of food, service, plating and greeting is entirely in the students' hands, and thus far, the ideas have been insightful and creative.

After an in-class discussion on healthy eating habits and a balanced diet, in week 3, we dispelled some widely held myths about vegetarian food being bland and unappealing. At Rachelle's suggestion, (making a tasty vegetarian dish) and with Alexis's (the sole vegetarian classmate) blessing, the students fed the community a meal of Pasta Primavera and Garlic Bread, made wth locally sourced vegetables procured from The Point's weekly CSA, furnished

by Grow NYC. The meal 'sold-out' with record speed and the reviews were rave.

During the Easter break, anticipation is mounting about the next several classes ... one of which features guest Chef and Blank Plate Benefactor, Ben Eibert, who will be instructing a baking and pastry tutorial focused on his signature cookies and other sweets.

From ingredient identification, to whole protein fabrication, this year's Blank Plate student body has risen to the occasion in creating diverse and nutritious meals. And the knowledge gained will be easily applicable to at-home cooking, and furthering the important mission of feeding the South For week 6, we focused on international Bronx community. cuisine, and found inspiration in Asia and the Mediterranean. The students prepared a delectable 'fusion Lo Mein' made with Corned Beef, Turkey, and Locally Sourced Vegetables, as well as a Vegan Cous Cous, with Raisins and Almonds.

But week 8 stole the show! And though attendance was low, our return students took the helm, and led the class in putting out a fantastic meal of Shrimp Scampi and Linguini in a Champagne Butter Sauce, Deep Fried Whiting, and Fish and Fruit en Papillote. Truly exquisite cuisine!!

BLANK PLATE

Blank Plate 2017 got off to an auspicious start, with full enrollment and an abundance of scholarly enthusiasm. Our 'Chef In Training' roster of 15, included four return students, nine new young people, and two young (... at heart anyways) adults.

MEXICAN FOLKLORIC BALLET

Mazarte, Musica y Juventud is Mazarte Dance Company’s youth dance program which teaches zapateado basics, faldeo techniques, and other dance steps from various Mexican regions, all while learning about Mexican culture. The techniques come together and are showcased through dancing a son Jarocho or Huasteco, as well as the traditional Jarabe Tapatío. Through dance, children are able to build their self-esteem and develop spatial consciousness as they learn to dance as an individual, in tandem with a partner, and as part of a larger group, all while exercising AND having fun.

VISUAL ARTS

The visual arts program for the kids of the point is an exciting whimsical journey. The students are always filled with enthusiasm, and as the art teacher, I try to use that energy towards creating the most imaginative art projects they can create. Many of our projects are inspired by iconic picture books like "Floatsam" by David Weisner, and many of Ezra Jack Keats' works.

“The art Aficionado sessions are for teenage or adult artists of all backgrounds and skill levels to focus on expanding their horizons as an artist. We study anatomy using live models, experiment with new mediums like oils and ink, and also learn about new artists and different ways of executing your process.�,

MOVEMENT & LEADERSHIP

Warm ups are important!

This year with Movement and Leadership the approach was to raise awareness of self worth and self care. In the movement portion we discussed the importance of stretching before physical activities to prevent injuries and ways our eating habits affect our bodies to minimize sugar intake. In Leadership we spoke about what it means to be an asset to the community, how we as people can better ourselves to make the world better around us. The discussion that took place where about teamwork, bullying, and events that took place in our community such as the hit and run that occur in late 2016. Many students were aware of what was going on and as the victim was a classmate of theirs. They sent their support with cards and gifts that were made. Recently we went to visit the andrew freedman house with our Teen Circus program to work with gymnastic coach Rudy Van Dale who helped us with our technique and allowed us to use his trampoline!

Syllable Cooperative completed a move to The Point in February. Since then we have set up our equipment and completed several thousand dollars in orders! We have also taught a weekly tee shirt design class every Wednesday night.

CIRCUS OF LIFE

Once known by the name Cirque du Monde (Circus of the World) the teen division of Cirque du Soliel (Circus of the Sun), the circus program has graduated and moved on adopting the name Cirque de Vie (Circus of Life). Cirque de Vie is a fitting name since the focus of the program is to help teens work through social issues while learning circus skills.

The program offers a wide range of skills: Aerial skills (Trapeze and Silks) Partner Acrobatics Juggling I: Scarves and Balls Juggling II: Contact, Devil Sticks, Diabolo, Poi Tumbling Rolling Globe Stilts Rolla Bolla Tight Wire Based at The Point in the Bronx, Hula Hooping Cirque de Vie is one of the first and Lyra only programs in the Bronx that of- Unicycling fers circus classes geared to teens.

CIRCUS OF LIFE

ICP @ THE POINT

Students from ages 9-18 learn the fundamental of black and white photography for 10 weeks (5 weeks in the summer) The program gives students access to photo supplies, camera, and darkroom to gain knowledge of this media. Students focus on personal vision and photographing subjects in their community. During this year, students went on field trips like The Studio Museum in Harlem, International Center of Photography (ICP) Museum, Bronx Documentary Center, Museum of the City of New York, El Museo del Barrio, and Central Park. They were introduced to guest artists Ricky Flores, Keisha Scarville, and Rhynna M. Santos. Classes culminated in final presentations of students' work to show to staff, family and friends.

Our teen’s students, Michael Orejuela, Chelsea Mauricio, and Kimberly Ogungbe have branched out from our classroom/lab and are now enrolled in Advanced Photo Classes at The International Center of Photography’s Teen Academy. Where students have the opportunity to learn color and digital photography as well as enhance their white & black skills.

A selection of about twenty-four ICP at THE POINT students and alumni were selected to show their works at the new ICP Museum at the Bowery. Their work was displayed as a poster wall at the museum’s lobby and café.

We would also like to welcome Néstor Pérez-Molière as one of our new Co-Program Coordinator / Lab Manager, working alongside Tiffany Williams, who is a former student and has been Co-Program Coordinator / Lab Manager for ICP at The Point for the past 16 years.

Waterfront Justice: Tyler, Michael, Brandon, Zenaida, Ndella As a group and campaign we have made a lot of efforts to to improving our waterfront. Whenever we had a problem, we always relied on each each other to find a solution. During many community meetings, we had the opportunity to speak to our community about the issues affecting our waterfront. Events like the Town Hall and the Alumni Dinner gave us a chance to to teach our friends and family members what waterfront justice truly is about.

Being able to convey how important our campaign is and how much more needs to be done in order to improve our waterfront means a lot us as a team. We take great pride in making sure our community is prepared in case of another future storm. In addition, we truly hope that our (and the community's) input on how the $45 million designated for use in Hunts Point gets implemented and is used to protect our neighborhood.

Urban Food Justice: Grace, Kimberly, Rose, Jenet This year we had the opportunity to research our campaign, Urban Food Justice. Through our campaign, we learned more about the our community’s relationship with food and what we can do to change that. In the beginning of the year we took a tour of Hunts Point and saw the Food Distribution Center, a place that feeds over 23 million people. We also took part in the Blank Plate program, where we learned about the terrible things put in the foods we eat.

It’s incredible to learn how this community houses the largest food distribution center in the country but still gets some of the worse kinds of food. Our campaign has been fighting for fresh fruits and vegetables and more community gardens. We even led an environmental justice tour of Hunts Point with youth from the Horace Mann School, showing and explaining the food industry to them and how we get the worst quality food even though it’s part of the community.

As part of campaign we not only instruct and share information, we engage in stewardship by working on our urban food garden. In doing so, we create our own access to healthy fruits and vegetables by growing them. All of the events and activities we’ve engaged in have helped us learn how important food is in our communities and how we must continue to fight for more and better access to something we all needs as humans to survive!

A.C.T.I.O.N. Sheridan Expressway Campaign: Andy, Justin, David Between 2016 and 2017, the Sheridan Expressway team has taken initiative in informing the community about the history of and future plans for the structure. Starting in December, we began by sharing the current struggles with the expressway with the local community. Along with the $97 million awarded last year, we were able to advocate with other community organizations and get Governor Andrew Cuomo to add an additional $700 million to the project and begin the process of making the Sheridan a boulevard.

Following this announcement, the Sheridan team has also participated ACTION's Town Hall event, where we able to connect more closely with community members along with answer any questions. As of now, we are also planning for the 3rd Annual Sheridan Teen Summit. In this event, the Sheridan team along with young people from Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) will share the campaign with youth from Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School to get them informed, inspired and motivated to help us transform the Sheridan!

MINDS EMPOWERED

Minds Empowered is a support group for women identified and gender non-conforming youth. Together we learn, grow, heal and create. Throughout the year we focus on identity, holistic health, and community empowerment. Our primary project is P.O.P., a zine that aims to capture life experiences that our peers can relate to. Annually, we organize Female Flava, a day in which we celebrate the women in our communities. This year's theme is The Goddess Within.

MINDS EMPOWERED

MUSIC

This year the music program at The Point has changed multiple times to welcome & foster the strengths of new members & past students. In a just a few months we have placed together students from different generations at The Point in hopes of getting them together to continue developing as performers bit more importantly to continue growing as individuals within society. We have listened to music outside of our normal listening habits, as well as the music that we're used to in order to get a better idea of what's out there for us to learn from.

VISUAL ARTS

The Saturday Art Portfolio Development Workshop teaches young artist to reconsider their role in the art making process; letting go of the notion that they are just "students" and introducing the idea that they're already accomplished Artists. The young Artist were encouraged to utilize the skills they already have, build new skills and create a body of work that defines their artistic style. The highlight of the session was having a consistent attendance, every Saturday morning the kids came to the class which was inspiring and motivating for me as their instructor. They really proved that they are not only great Artists but also business oriented and willing to work hard in order to progress.

FREE HUNTS POINT WiFi PROJECT

The Digital Stewards of Hunts Point is a group youth and adults with an interest in building technology that connects community and enhances resiliency. We are learning about building, repairing, and managing wireless networks as well as community outreach. Our goal is to help build a the FREE HUNTS POINT WiFi network and help communicate people in case of emergency with communication that will outlast any flood or severe weather condition.

OPEN HYDRANT

Open Hydrant Theater Company had a stupendous, exciting year continuing their mission of bringing Broadway to the Bronx! We had a fabulous Equity show called Haunted Holliot/Shadow's Unicycle involving our talented youth. Two of those youth, Tavan Thomas and Stephen Durosaiye were asked to perform at a gala honoring the acclaimed author of the Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins.

Mavelyn Cruz and Jesus DeSantos were invited guests on the Broadway stage of Hamilton after one of the performances. Our youth further brought down the house and rocked Broadway performing four times at the renowned 54 Below and received a glowing review written up in a Broadway World article! Continuing their musical chops, our youth performed Hairspray to sold-out crowds here at The Point and are scheduled to do High School Musical in June. We are blessed to call The Point home and to continue blazing trails in the acting world, creating opportunities for the youth of our community and making historic footprints here in the South Bronx!

Our program is expanding to more that just schools. This year we started an after school program, that focused on getting our students skills in the photo industry and getting them jobs. Our students worked on actual photo shoots and interned with established photographers. They are having a blast.
