Mission THE POINT Community Development Corporation is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) dedicated to youth development and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. We work with our neighbors to celebrate the life and art of our community, an area traditionally defined solely in terms of its poverty, crime rate, poor schools and substandard housing. We believe the area’s residents, their talents and aspirations, are THE POINT’s greatest assets. THE POINT offers a multi-faceted approach to asset-based community development. It’s programming falls within three main headings - Youth Development, Arts and Culture and Community Development - all aimed at the comprehensive revitalization of Hunts Point.

This year students develop and refine their skills in creating works of art. They experiment with different mediums and techniques, from mosaic, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, paper sculptures to crafts, while learning the elements of art and the principles of design. They learn how to analyze, reflect and talk about their work as well as other students work. One of the highlights of this year was our visit to a local art gallery, More Pointz, where they met artist Eric Orr and heard about his experience as an artist while looking at his work trajectory and new work of art, a serie of African masks painting in vinyl records. Back in the classroom they created unique pieces of work inspired by this artist.

CODING COMIC

Code Monkey Island play test Digital graphic novel that teaches children the logic of coding. We want to marry narrative to coding. We are planning to build a platform where children can re-write (re-visualize).

Code Monkey Island play test

A narrative by changing the logic of events. This means that if a child changes a variable in the narrative the whole narrative is potentially re-written, just like real life! Our target audience are 8-10 yr olds.

Our program name is called Circus. We teach a free social Circus class for the ages of 12-21. Circus is just the title of the class but it’s pretty much gymnastics coupled with entertainment. What we teach is tumbling, parkour, aerials, juggling (scarves, balls, rings, clubs, fire clubs), trapeze, lira, silks, Chinese yoyo, spinning plates, rolling globe, rollabolla, pirimids, counter balancing, contortions, performing skills, safety form and technique, etc. There is a lot going on in circus from rolls to eating fire. We build leadership skills and self-confidence, and also teach our students all the circus skills we know so that they can some day run the program. There is almost too much to say but please you are always welcomed to come in and see the Circus class or our shows your-

As part of the A.C.T.I.O.N. integration pilot program students designed and executed a mural, based on their active campaigns, Redefining Rehabilitation, Waterfront Justice, Food Justice and the Sheridan Expressway. Taking the class they got introduced to the history of mural making from its origins in Mexico to current community mural movements in the United States that use muraling as a tool to spread political and social messages to their communities. The students collaborated on the concept of the mural and came out with a four pieces mobil mural that could be hung or carried as banners for demonstrations or as presentations to their community.

THE POINT’s teen community leadership group A.C.T.I.O.N. engages local Bronx youth to work to identify social and environmental justice issues facing Hunts Point and learn how to be community organizers and activists. A.C.T.I.O.N. is committed to learning and addressing said issues with the guidance and support of community members, organizational partners and other stakeholders. A.C.T.I.O.N. members receive training in leadership, media, and environmental policy. The program also provides academic support throughout the school year and assists with internship placement and college access opportunities.

This year saw new partnerships for our campaigns and strengthening of familiar ties with longtime partners. Our Sheridan Campaign team planned and executed the 2nd Annual Sheridan Teen Summit with youth from YMPJ. This year’s event, held at Hyde Leadership Charter School, helped usher renewed awareness about the decommissioning of the Sheridan Expressway to an entire high school campus directly affected by the underutilized highway.

The Redefining Rehabilitation campaign also now counts with a new partner with Urban Youth Collaborative. UYC is an alliance that brings together New York City students to fight for real education reform that puts students first. Demanding a high quality education for all students, our young people struggle for social, economic, and racial justice in our schools and communities. With the inclusion of The Point to this coalition, our youth now have an opportunity to funnel

Urban Food Justice team received support from the Horace Mann School on the start of gardening season. After leading the Riverdale schools’ students on an environmental justice tour of Hunts Point, ACTION led the gardening session where both team planted fruits, vegetables and herbs in our campus garden! Our Waterfront Justice team inaugurated THE POINT’s new Resiliency Lab with a session with our partners from the New York City Environmental

Justice Alliance. The youth learned about the environmental vulnerabilities Hunts Point faces and what ideas and plans are established to correct them.

The Women’s Group is a support group for women identified youth of the ages 13 to 24. Our mission is to create a safe space for young women to learn, grow and express themselves. Our favorite project is our zine, POP. We create our own media, due to a lack to representation in mainstream magazines. This year we are also celebrating our 8th annual Female Flava. This year’s theme is Digital Sisterhood; we will focus on how digital media influences social justice movements.

Open Hydrant Theater Company @ The Point in The Bronx presents the new, outrageous musical, “FOOLS IN LOVE”. This musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is part of The Conquer Your ShakesFEAR Series. “Fools in Love” is intended to introduce children to Shakespeare, and according to The New York Times, it does the job with exaggeration and pure silliness. The comedy is set in the era of “Happy Days” and poodle skirts, in a California town called West Athens, where four teenagers hang out at a diner and discuss their romantic problems and plans. Hermia loves Lysander but is being pressured to marry Demetrius. On the sidelines, Helena pines for Demetrius, who finds her completely unappealing and tells her so. Conceived by Sarah Rosenberg and Luis Reyes Cardenas and adapted by Sarah Rosenberg, they have kept Shakespeare’s language (accented with an occasional “huh?” or “oh, all right”), letting young theatergoers grasp meaning through context.

Each year our students learn not only how to cook and became teen chefs, but also consider their relationship to food in the most diverse ways possible, including edible products, materials, experiences, environments and processes. This year as their final project students looked into making products for their homes, they printed shopping canvas bags using vegetables as stamps, and made coasters from mosaic tiles. Each week students enhance their culinary skills, and food design awareness, as well as learning about nutrition and food justice while preparing a meal for their community. This year we had a special visit from pastry chef Benjamin Elbirt with whom we learn how to bake cookies and cupcakes.

THE POINT CAMPUS FOR THE ARTS AND ENVIRONMENT Workshops, NOCD-NY CityWide Forum, Animals/Botanicals Exhibit

The workshops became a theme of an exhibition, Animals/Botanicals, a POINTWide Exhibition including 30 some artists and 60 some works of art. It’s opening was the back-drop of Natural Occurring Cultural District’s (NOCD-NY) City Wide Forum hosted by THE POINT, a platform for exploring the value of culture that happens from The Neighborhood Up.

The Campus was really busy this year. Aficionado had workshops from late spring to November in the Brick House. Our work was inspired by artist/ biologist, Brandon Ballengée’s project, Frameworks of Absence, that pictures the degradation of the environment and the 6th Great Extinction. In an intuitive way, we took Brandon’s work and through research reclaimed our local extinct or endangered species by making stencil portraits that were printed on hand made kites and flown whenever the wind at the campus would allow. The joy of drawing and kite-flying combined was AWAY a sort of resurrection. Featured artists were Joe and Kevin Melendez (7 yrs old) who made beautiful ornament designs, that sold very well! POINT/Aficionado artists continue to be honored by inclusion in the Bronx Artists Documentary Project at book launches at the Bronx Museum and Montefiore Hospital.

THE POINT presented three artists at The Bronx Arts Alliance yearly exhibit, titled this year: The Bronx Speaks: Our Home: The theme responds to the current wave of displacement threatening the rich cultural identity of the South Bronx. Sharon De La Cruz, Eric Orr, and Sien Ide brought their own vision to this theme. The

works were shown at Bronx Uniting the Colors of the Art Space. Bronx” and encouraging an awareness of our fellow bugs, fishes, birds and animals in the fabulous diversity of The Bronx. THE POINT hosts The Hope Center Exhibit, “Heart , Home, Health” where artists participating in their aids rehabilitation program displayed their work at the Point. THE POINT Atrium Aficionado Workshops,The Hope Center at THE POINT Ongoing Aficionado Workshops on Wednesday evenings went back to basics with life drawing guided by “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards; exercises that coax the brain to detach from vertical to lateral thinking. We are now applying this work to making portraits of John Ahearn’s ( artist in residence) sculptural portraits of POINT folk of all ages and making banners for the Fish Parade based on “nouns of assembly”: a gaggle of geese, a murder of crows, a rainbow of butterflies — We are inspired by the Fish Parade’s theme this year “

EVERYWHERE: BUGSTOCK 2016! Visiting Artist / Biologist, Brandon Ballengée, returned for his third residency at THE POINT to conduct workshops on biodiversity, engaging a visiting group of Native American students and young

citizen scientists at THE POINT in learning about local species through observation of live gathered from The Bronx River, fossilized dinosaur poop and eating roasted bugs on pizza to be capped with a field trip to Hunter’s Island in Pelham Bay Park in May.

A John e a r n

John Ahearn (New York in the year of 1951) is a founding member of the Collaborative Projects, Inc. and co-organizer of the “Times Square Show” of 1980. Ahearn has collaborated with Rigoberto Torres (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico in 1960) throughout many projects. During the 1980’s and 1990’s, the collaborators carried out many outdoors murals in the Bronx. Both artists continue working on public projects and exhibitions worldwide. This year John work with our students at the after-school program as models with the goal to created a public art piece for the facade at THE POINT. www.johnahearn.com/

Apache artist from the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona came to THE POINT for his second residency in June of 2016. His first in 2009, was a training in skate board stencil design for a group of 20 young students. He inspired them with his fierce identity politics as a Native American and his great artistry. His influence resulted in two youth-led skateboard design collaboratives: Eco-Ryders and Polido Skateboards based on fusing Skateboard Design with Environmental Justice. When he returned in June to make his iconic mural “Fort Apache, The Bronx” which overturned negative stereotypes generated by the film from 1981, we were proud that he referred the THE POINT as his home away from home. His second visit coincided with THE POINT’s South Bronx-wide partnership with Partnership for Parks and The Fund for Public Health to build a skate park on the Hunts Point Peninsula. His presence in our work was and is seminal to this initiative.

REDHOOK Through the generous support and mentorship of Jim Moffat of Red Hook Labs and Estate 4, our Program teaches digital photography, video and Zines in high schools and community centers in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Led by Joseph Gilmore, Bashira Webb and Mark Nevers,Students who were part of Point programming and now teachers themselves, the program instructs in camera and studio skills at all levels and has had numerous local and international exhibitions to great acclaim, including an ongoing educational exchange partnership with the highly esteemed FOAM Museum of Amsterdam. There has been everything from class trips to Vogue magazine and a wonderful tour by Tonne Goodman, its Fashion Director, to chronicling the everchanging Brooklyn waterfront. The Project has produced dynamic engaging work by the students and instructors helping to connect their neighborhoods and their talents to the world at large in a truly outstanding way.
