LITERACY

The months of Oct. to Dec. are used towards evaluating child social and academic levels through different spelling activities, games and Unitas exercises. In January each group begins their own “project” for the rest of the program till June.

The first month of October was used to reinforce or introduce students to POINT rules and culture. This was done by the usage of Unitas modules that encourage the type of behavior and communications skills we would like to see take place within the program. November and December were filled with lessons that challenge student’s phonetics and literary skills, to allow a form of assessment in order to identify each child’s strengths or needs as well as that for the group as a whole.

Group A’s end of the year project revolved around the many works of Shel Silverstein, the author of such titles like “The Giving Tree” and “Where the Sidewalk Ends”. Students were then asked to create their own works of poetry. Group B’s Project revolved more around POINT culture and our attentiveness to their individual Passion’s. They were given the opportunity to create their own sneaker design based off of their interests. Each student in Groups C & D created their own children’s picture book based on Tomie dePaola’s book “Strega Nona”. Students were asked to write and illustrate their stories, while following the same plot of not being able to follow directions. Being the programs oldest students, Group’s E & F participated in our 2nd annual NEA Big Read. This years book selection was “In The Time Of The Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez, which is a historical novel of the Mirabal sisters during the time of the Rafael Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic and ultimately playing a large role in his demise.

City Year Clubs Art club with Seth: Basically I try to teach art to children in its simplest form.

I use circles, other shapes, and occasionally numbers to teach both art and math. I also try to teach them to bring an object to life by using three dimensional skills, which is using the x, y, and z axis. In doing so, they are encouraged to draw more complex objects.

Coloring club with Bernadette: We print out different coloring pages, such as Disney and Cartoon Network characters that the students get a kick out of. We then make packets out of the drawings so the students can be organized and take them home when they are finished. While coloring, the students are in a relaxation space where we listened to music and colored. They loved it! As weeks passed, some of the students would color and some would trace their coloring pages, which was pretty cool. Tracing is a talent which they were really great at.

Newspaper Club with Angie: The students of Group E work in a group to put together a newsletter for THE POINT. They interview members of the community and write stories that they feel would be interesting to their ASP peers.

City Year Clubs Storybook club with Kristina: This club attempts to take literature and make it interactive for younger students by allowing them to perform, read aloud, and engage in artistic activities. Each week students are introduced to new titles and are asked to express their themes and ideas in creative ways. This perpetuates an appreciation for reading in young readers by showing how fun reading can be.

Fitness club with Chloe: Each Wednesday, the students engage in various physical activities ranging from calisthenics to dance.

Through mini discussions, fitness club stresses to the students the importance of staying active and physically fit.

Starfish Corps: In the Starfish Corps, K-5th graders experience a “mini-City Year,� participating in homework help and learning about social issues such as peace, the environment, and health.

50 Acts of Greatness: In this club, students learn about how to be a better student and person in general.

The focus is on being introspective and learning to consider their own behaviors.

Each week, the students take time to think about and record in their journals all of the good deeds, or acts of greatness, they performed that week. Afterward, they are taught a behavior-based lesson by their City Year instructor.

It was another interesting year for Music at THE POINT. ASP music appreciation classes were taken by Groups A & B. We sang, danced, and played instruments with the help of City Year (thanks Mr. Matthew and Miss Tiffany!) Our new instructor Adam A made a big impact with his synthesizer keyboard. New sounds were everywhere.

THE POINT 3 band played at venues around the Bronx and our Teen Jam Tuesdays saw a lot of new faces. Music lessons continued and we hope next year will be even better!

GAME MAKING

Adventure Club at THE POINT CDC Superheroes who are still in high school! Group E played Empire Academy, a complex Role Playing Game (RPG) that was tailored for use at THE POINT. Students designed and built mutant characters, each with Attributes, Skills, Stats and a secret super power.

They then used those characters as playing pieces in scenarios presented by their Gamemaster, Mr. Javi. The team must strategize and cooperate to overcome challenges and survive. Each team member makes actions in turn with other members of the team, so they have to be careful not to do things that will get in someone else’s way.

The complex nature and cooperative gameplay of RPG develops critical thinking, teamwork, planning strategies and prioritizing strategies. Team members have also illustrated their characters using their powers and written accounts of what happened the first time their powers manifested.

Since we’ve begun playing, the team has stopped hybrid animalmen created by an evil genius student, and confronted an evil school nutritionist who has turned the school athletes into monstrous, mindless creatures! We will be exploring other game genres in the future, and even try our hand at designing our own scenarios.

Mr. Javi: “If another young person asked you what you do in the Adventure Club, what would you say?

“It’s like a board game that you play that has weird dice. It involves teamwork, skill and strategy.” -Carlos “We play this game called Empire Academy. It involves kids with superpowers and monstrous creatures that want to destroy us.” -Robert

“It’s like a board game, you get to have superpowers, it involves teamwork. You get to explore and find out many things that are going to happen. It feels like it’s happening in real life.” -Dena Mr. Javi: “What is the hardest part about gaming?”

Visual Arts at THE POINT has had a great year with a broad array of workshops and exhibitions that responded to common themes that we all share in our work here at THE POINT: Environmental and Social Justice, and the Love of Art. In October, we made banners for The Halloween Parade about the movement to deconstruct a mile and a half of The Sheridan Expressway in favor of parkland and affordable housing. The banners were decorated by the Kudzu vine harvested by Christopher Toole who runs our Aquaponics program. He pointed out the vine’s beauty and value as a medicinal plant countering its reputation as a nasty invasive.

The Winter Festival in December brought together local artists and artists in this traditional charming year-end celebration.

In January, Aficionado Workshops embarqued on an experiment where we researched the connection of bio-chemistry and expressions in indigenous cultures, particularly of their shamans - where there proved to be, for example, a marked similarity between images of DNA and two serpents intertwined, a common image in ancient and indigenous cultures world-wide. As we didn’t have microscopes, we sought to imagine our interiors by close-up portraits of each other’s eyes and making up graphic symbols for our microscopic geometries.

We were joined by descolonizARTE, an artist’s collective founded by union activist and artist, Steve Deheeger. The mission was to create cabezudos, gigantic paper-mache heads in the likeness of social justice heroes, for May Day Demonstrations throughout the city that embraced union and immigrant Augustine Cruz at the home of, rights and revived the Occupy Wall Street movement. William Acevedo was one of our Teaching Artists in Residence, working with the E’s and F’s. He produced with his young artists, a huge body of work that took the theme of THE POINT’s Big Read, sponsored by NEA, of In the Time of Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez. As a result, THE POINT’s Atrium is filled with butterflies and other creatures, the theme for this year’s At the Heart of THE POINT exhibition, the 9th in this tradition of year-end exhibitions celebrating the work of student and local artists.

We also had Louise Kulp, a visiting fiber artist from Franklin and Marshall University who worked with the B’s (not bees) in several rug-hooking workshops that were a huge success.

Our Visual Arts program welcomes the generosity of volunteer artists, like Louise, who give of their time and allow our young artists to gain exposure to accomplished teaching art- Rug Hooking with Louise and the B’s, photo by CC ists from diverse backgrounds.

We have had many successes regarding professional development for our Aficionado Artists. THE POINT sponsored a focused exhibit at BronxArtSpace in Mott Haven in August 2011, entitled Outsiders Inside the Bronx. As a result, Jose Rivera is now represented by the Luise Ross Gallery in Chelsea, with a one man show in January; Augustine Cruz’s work is now represented in the collection of Jerry Ashton, Folk Art collector and political activist; Chen Carrasco sold three works from the show, and it is important to mention here, that he is a stalwart and gifted volunteer --always, --in Aficionado workshops; and finally Ray Lopez landed a one-man show at Heliopolis, a cutting edge art space in Green Point.

THE POINT was also honored to be included in No longer Empty’s exhibit, “This Side of Paradise” at The Andrew Freedman Home just across from the Bronx Museum.

This was a major exhibition, whose purpose was to mine the history of the home as a retirement place for the “previously wealthy” for the production of sight specific works relating to this mystery of occupying something of a haunted space. Something like 60 artists from the Bronx and abroad were included. THE POINT’s room was a poetic document of The Village of Murals, an ongoing initiative to green Hunts Point with murals and the history of Hunts Point as a parallel universe to the story of the Andrew Freedman Home. Because of the influence of Lady K Fever, the room became a stencil haven for POINT artists, Alejandra Delfin, Danny R. Peralta, Misra Walker, Sharon De La Cruz, Alberto Inamagua, Richard Palacios, and David Yearwood. These served as the foreground of multiple projections shot

It was an opportunity for us to work together as artists and experience each other in a way other than our usual roles at THE POINT.

Most recently we hosted a tour for The Municipal Arts Society of The Village of Murals, which brought together a group of about 25 smart New Yorkers and Europeans, on Memorial day weekend, when most unsmart New Yorkers are out-of-town, to see our work.

This successful event was a result of our participation in the consortium, Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts, which is a citywide initiative promoting the power of grass-roots arts movements. At this moment Aficionado Workshops are collaborating with Cirque du Monde as set and costume designers for their final showcase, again about “In the Time of the Butterflies”, and yet another example of how collaboration at THE POINT amongst all the different arts we house under one roof makes for an enhanced imagination.

COOKING WORSHOPS

Blank Plate is a program that inspires Hunts Point teens through creative culinary experiences, transforming their relationship to food, and fostering new connections with their fellow residents. The program was comprised of six creative cooking workshops that culminated into a fundraising dinner event co-created with the teens. The six weekly workshops were both chef-led cooking demonstrations taught by Kelston Bascom (Bascom Catering) and design-led creative activities led by three graduate students from Parsons The New School for Design. The teens learned practical culinary skills such as knife skills, preparation, cooking, plating, and serving meals for the weekly community No Beef Thursday dinners. Participants also explored and discovered various creative activities that encouraged them to define Hunts Point’s genuine food culture.

The highlight of the program was a final fundraising dinner called “Take Me To The Tropics” where the teens’ experience was expressed and shared with their neighbors. From theme, guest list, menu, plating, environment, and roles, all the ideas generated through Blank Plate were translated and synthesized into this final dinner event. A diverse group of about 125 people including Hunts Point residents, the teens’ family and friends, THE POINT CDC donors, other youth from THE POINT programs, and faculty and students from Parsons - all showed up to join us on this “trip for the tastebuds.” Under Kelston’s guidance, Blank Plate teens prepared, cooked, designed, and served fresh and delicious dishes (plantain wrapped jerked chicken, mashed parsnips with roasted habanero, and goat cheese croquettes with beet jelly) to make a memorable experience for all the guests. A final documentation of the program was created to raise awareness about the teens’ perspective on food options in the neighborhood, in the hopes of generating further support to sustain Blank Plate as a year-round program at THE POINT.

buildOn returns for another year to volunteer at THE POINT on Wednesday. 15 Banana Kelly High School Students volunteer, assist in homework help, and helped organized and implement daily sessions at THE POINT with buildOn Program Coordinator Haddi Waggeh. We look forward to coming back next fall!

Aquaponics

By Christopher Toole and Anya Pozdeeva Aquaponics is sustainably growing fish and plants in recirculating systems. It can also be thought of as a balanced combination of Aquaculture (fish farming) and Hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil), while striving for maximum resource efficiency (low energy, low water usage, etc.) Last year we began with a 50 gallon recycling bin in the back of the theater, one lonely Blue Tilapia, and an idea. This year S.A.V.E. @ THE POINT received a tremendous amount of positive news and media attention for what we are doing farming and teaching. Some of this great publicity came from organizations like the BBC (British Broadcasting Corp.), NY Post, NPR’s Science Friday (National Public Radio), AFP (Agence France Presse), DNAinfo, WNYC, CBS New York Ch. 2, Hunts Point Express and more!

This year we taught Groups B, C, D & F, and as well as a few extra passionate students, in the After-School Program. We quickly got to work learning about growing fish and plants for food, with no soil, and limited resources. The children learned many things, from the importance of observation and asking questions, to the critical role of bacteria and other microorganisms like Archaea in turning the fish waste into plant food.

Through observation, discussions, artwork and hands -on experience the students were exposed to both Aquaponics and many other aspects of urban farming. This included techniques for growing gourmet mushrooms from used coffee grounds and cardboard, recognizing edible & beneficial weeds in the neighborhood and container gardening. At the end of the year we introduced an incubator and baby chickens. One of the children’s favorite activities continues to be simply catching, sorting and sexing the fish. Fortunately, there is an ongoing need for this as we bred well over 500 Blue Tilapia this year! This spring the students worked hard to help begin our expanded growing efforts in THE POINT’s back triangle, where we are looking forward to growing the Tilapia out to dinner plate size, along with a large salad, invasive weed (garlic-mustard) pesto and gourmet mushrooms! We ended the year with just such a meal, after the students learned how to clean the fish – guts, gills and scales, then cook and eat it all!

As is our aim, we are helping to grow young people who can look at the fish or produce section at the supermarket and not only realize what’s fresh and what’s not, but they realize that they themselves could grow some of what they see there, in their own home.

Thank you again to the Hunts Point Community, and the Community Development and Non-profit incubator services at THE POINT. We are continuing to work towards our larger mission of helping to create a sustainable food vertical in the form of integrated urban farming.

CAPOEIRA

The ABADA-Capoeira classes were held at THE POINT and we engaged by several of the students participating in after-school programs at THE POINT. Participants learned to focus on physical and mental goals, i.e. concentration, conflict resolution, and most importantly accepting constructive criticism. As their minds grew, subsequently so did their bodies, their partner-work consisting of various kicks, dodges, acrobatic movements and even their understanding of the portuguese songs we use in Capoeira were growing. Some of the participants are fully engaged in Capoeira and we at The A.C.E. are grateful that doors were opened for us at THE POINT.

The City Heroes dance team was founded by Michael Laing in 2008. Since then the team has grown and worked together to create routines which they perform at community events. The team was originally formed to give teens and young adults a safe and fun place to go on Friday nights. The concept was to provide a creative outlet as well as an alternative to “hanging out�, keeping its members off the street and out of danger. One unique attribute of this team is the type of routines created. Each routine is like a play; a mesh between dance and theater. So if you love either or both be sure to stop in the studio and check us out. The City Heroes meet at THE POINT every Friday at 6pm.

Cirque du Monde

In 2011 and 2012 the Cirque du Monde program at the POINT has expanded to include outreach and leadership opportunities locally and internationally.

Some highlights include: Omar, Maya, Alexis, and Patricia flying to Italy to join youth ambassadors from around the world promoting healthy living as part of the WE FREE event in SanPatrignano.

The Coaches in Training program continues to focus on sustainability mentoring our participants on the road to becoming facilitators of the Cirque du Monde program at THE POINT. Cirque was featured in the Daily News which has led to invites to perform at The Bronx Botanical Garden’s Psoriasis Walk as well as teach workshops at The NY Public Library.

Our Cirque kids are not only learning cool tricks but valuable life skills that will enable a bright future and many opportunities.

A.C.T.I.O.N. Activists Coming to Inform Our Neighborhood

THE POINT’s teen community leadership group A.C.T.I.O.N. engages 20 stipend youth activists three times per week from the community who work to identify social and environmental justice issues facing Hunts Point with the goal of developing ongoing youth-led solutions.

This year ACTION focused on building sustainability, especially in regards to organizing themselves and the community they serve. We started with changing the titles of several campaigns including Re-Defining Rehabilitation (formerly known as the ‘Jail’ campaign) and expanding campaigns, such as incorporating middle school students from MS 424 to our School Food/Food Justice campaign. This year we’ve incorporated biking, political education, and clean ups to the list. Working with the botanical gardens and strengthening our relationship with organizations such as the Bronx River Alliance has helped to create a more sustainable ACTION.

M.I.S.T.E.R. Men In Society Today Examining Reality

During M.I.ST.E.R’s first term, the curriculum concentrated on sex education. The curriculum for this session concentrated on increasing student’s social justice awareness. Topics like Masculinity vs. Machismo, Sex vs. Gender and normalized oppression were introduced and discussed with the intention of building a campaign dealing with these topics. There were many successes this year. Hip Hop recording artist Fred Da Godson attended one of our sessions, held workshops on normalized oppression, but the biggest accomplishment was creating the group’s first campaign.

The campaign focuses on abolishing Sexism in society today. After educating ourselves on the topic and analyzing sexism in society through a basis of study groups alongside with other mens groups, we were able to create a workshop on misogyny and the objectification of women which we’ve gotten great feedback on. Our end of the year project, in collaboration, with Montefiore Medical Center and Groundswell is to create a mural advocating positive healthy living in the Bronx, which is going to be displayed at the Montefiore Health clinic at 161st & Prospect ave. It still is in the works, but we are all very excited with our results thus far.

WOMENS GROUP

W.O.M.E.N. is unique in that it combines sex education with the Arts, bridging the gap between how information is learned and retained. During the year we hold healing circles, LGBTQ sex education workshops, creative writing classes, mural making, and role playing! This is a group for women identified youth who wish to empower themselves and their community and a safe space for women who are straight, lesbian, bisexual and transgender of all cultural backgrounds. THE POINT partners with Advocates for Youth to offer this youth-led peer education project.
