We work with our neighbors to celebrate the life and art of our community, an area traditionally defined solely in terms of its poverty, crime rate, poor schools and substandard housing. We believe the area’s residents, their talents and aspirations, are THE POINT’s greates assets.

THE POINT offers a multi-faceted approach to asset-based community development. It’s programming falls withgin three main headings - Youth Development, Arts and Culture and Community Development - all aimed at the comprehensive revitalization of Hunts Point.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM The After-School Program at THE POINT caters to 65 youth in the Hunts Point community with a focus on educational, personal and social growth. This 2017-2018 school year we have students from six local schools in grades K-7. In the Fall session we were able to accomplish so much with your support. With the help of our ASP staff and volunteers we are able to provide 45 minutes of homework help daily, along with multiple enrichment activities.

This year we’ve been able to provide our Students with weekly Music, Art, Dance, Improv and Film classes along with daily Literacy and Science classes. So far we’ve made heroes, penguins and more in art class, gone over our musical scales and even started writing a screenplay!! Thanks to Blank Plate we know how to make our own healthy snacks! From the classic pita bread and hummus to the creative Nutella fruit wraps, we have been able to expose our students to food choices they might not have considered.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Fridays are our community days where all the grades come together for themed activities based on our Literacy theme of the Month.

In October the focus was our Heroes in our world. November’s theme was our Family Culture and December we opened up the conversation about bullying and our emotions. Every Friday of the month was separated into FIT Fridays, Fun action Fridays, and Spirit Fridays. FIT Fridays we focus on our physical well being making snacks with all the kids and then transition to workout from cardio to yoga.

Fun ACTION Fridays we partner up with Rebecca and her ACTION group leading activities relevant to the monthly theme. Spirit Fridays days we wore our awesome pop culture and video game related clothing discussing our fandoms and the themes behind them. We went in to the holiday break strong, first by attending the tree lighting

by A1 Distribution spent the Fridays watching movies all culminating with our ASP party for the kids which every child got their holiday wish of making slime!!!

LITERACY

T

he main goal in literacy this year is to build confidence in the reading, writing and public speaking skills of our youth through storytelling. We’ve been able to have dialogue centered around self + community empowerment, family culture, persistence, human rights, and social interaction in society. This has given insight into: the students’ social-emotional behavior and how these behaviors connect to all areas of their lives; what equality is, the continued fight for it and what figures have paved the way.

We started the year by journaling, creating comics and mini-scenes / speeches focused on these themes and look forward to ending the year with participants showcasing their work at Passion Fair.

We continue to build on the academic growth of our participants by having them keep track of their progress in school and set goals to challenge themselves. By maintaining a responsibility of reading for 15 minutes and writing about what they learned, there has been a strong foundation of literacy and daily improvement. We’ve also created a literacy circle for participants who would like more practice improving their abilities in reading, vocabulary building, and spelling. Games like Lightning Spelling, Boggle, Word Soup, & Word Unscrambles and other related activities have also been implemented during homework help time to strengthen literacy skills.

HIGHLIGHTS Gratitude – For our Thanksgiving activities, we came to the conclusion that the importance is placed on family and spending time with them. Helping others in need was also expressed and everyone was able to share what they were grateful for. They were able to create ideal Thanksgiving menus and poetry about family culture.

Friendship & Bullying – We watched clips of How The Grinch Stole Christmas and listed solutions for being a friend to The Grinch. If they were approached by The Grinch in real life: they would tell the teacher when they felt unsafe, offer the Grinch small gifts, and have a dance party.

Dream Big – For the New Year, students used words such as discipline, confidence, persistence, enthusiasm, sacrifice, to create a word map with what it takes to achieve their dreams. Their immediate dreams were tied to having leadership roles, spending more time with family, better grades in school, and eating healthier. They identified their individual opportunities, challenges and obstacles– using the support they have at The Point to better themselves.

Black Love / Community Empowerment – For Black History month, students expressed that going to desegregated schools, not having to worry about where they can eat, and owning land are freedoms they enjoy. It was also inspiring for them to see more people who look like them achieving their dreams as a result of the work of many leaders / activists in our communities.

Persistence – For Women’s Herstory month, students were introduced to Maya Angelou and her poem, Phenomenal Woman– which students interpreted in order to highlight women who they admire through writing letters and poetry to them. Students also expressed that women should be treated equally– being portrayed better on TV, having the right to choose their husband rather than be in arranged marriages, and controlling what field they can work in. They were able to reflect on women’s rights – voting, being in positions of power, and having equal pay. We closed out the month with Women’s Herstory trivia + ”Strong Women” vocabulary and spelling– emphasizing positive characteristics about women.

MATH/SCIENCE To round out our enrichment activities we offer math and science during program hours. In math we go over common core curriculum to better prepare our students for state testing. It’s not all about test prep in after-school, with the help of Pokemon we use the students love of the card game to teach them about basic math operations and strategy which lead to a whole day of Pokemon battles and critical thinking. In science we put our ratio skills to practice with one of our favorite projects, the making of slime!! This one is a highly requested activity! We use Elmers glue, watercolor and Tide laundry detergent to come up with different wacky version of slime that each participant makes on their own with love and excitement!!

MOVEMENT & LEADERSHIP Movement and Leadership is a vital part of our day. We believe that in addition to the importance of study and homework, we’ve got to keep ourselves moving with physical activities ranging ranging from yoga to rhythmic gymnastic. Each group has experienced a range of exercises to do and was taught the importance of stretching and warming up as well as the positive effects it has on the body. In leadership we partner with our middle school students to help our staff members with daily task. At times you may see them at the front desk helping with dismissal or acting as a teaching assistant in Circus or Blank Plate.

FUN FRIDAYS

T

hroughout the year we like to end the week with one big group activity!! This is a variety day of games, movies and learning based activities and one Friday a month we are joined by our ACTION youth. Following our “Dream Big” theme we dedicated a whole day to painting and drawing. Our youth were separated in different areas and allowed to paint whatever their hearts desire! This day became known as Big Messy Art Day in THE POINT Community. With the help of the movie ‘Inside Out’ the ASP staff was able to discuss emotional intelligence with the youth in our program. First we spent a day watching “Inside Out” and discussed how the movie made us feel and how we related to the different emotions. The following day we played games using the characters of the movie to further discuss our emotions and how to differentiate the anger from sadness while realizing which things bring them joy and how all of the feelings work together! And that’s just some of how fun FUN Friday is!

SOCIAL CIRCUS This year for ASP, we have been working on teamwork, through playing games like Human Chess, Cross the Ocean, Group Juggling, Scarf Tag, and Clowns in the Museum. As students and coaches, we have gotten better with supporting each other. More than just supporting each other, the kids have gotten better at understanding and accepting “loss�. Initially we struggled with getting the students to understand that sometimes losing is okay and that it leaves the opportunity to recognize mistakes, understanding those mistakes and that we can learn from them and try again. The kids are getting better with supporting each others success as well as failures, even beyond circus class.

N.E.R.D NERD is a social space during after school for the development and understanding of the youth and their connection to society through discussions and activities based on their personal hobbies and interests.The club navigates activities as well as interactions with youth from a cultural standpoint. Participants are able to feel comfortable being themselves while conversing about and participating in the activities they enjoy. NERD also seeks to redefine the overall definition of what it means to be, a Nerd.

BLANK PLATE Blank Plate Jr is a version of our Blank Plate Culinary Arts Program that engages Youth in the After-School Program in internal resilience through healthy eating. Participants learn new recipes, where food comes from, and how to make healthier choices. This fall our kindergarteners learned how to make granola bars and homemade chocolate from scratch. They were able to learn about where peanut butter and chocolate comes from. Making recipes and teaching them about healthy eating allows participants to be conscious about what they eat and open to trying new foods. Teaching our young people about where their food actually comes from is very valuable. Through Blank Plate Jr. they understand that food doesn’t just come from a store, but can start out as a plant, a grain, a seed. Over the course of the year, they’ve enjoyed their time learning and sharing the things they learned in class with each other and their family members.

T

his past fall we dove into the basics of music theory and learned about why music is important and how songs come together. Participants became familiar with the treble clef and learned the C scale from start to finish, as well as where the notes correspond on the piano. We also learned about the different types of notes, and how many beats each one is worth, which we practiced using the piano, their voices, and congas! We played word games to learn about story and lyric building, and the different ways that words and language are incorporated into songs. Playing these games also taught participants the importance of rhyming in songs. We practiced using that knowledge by playing guitar and singing songs together (and dancing too!).

Through a combination of art-making and group discussion participants are given a platform to express themselves freely and become change makers in their communities.

Focusing on issues of Domestic Violence and how to translate this awareness into community organizing and advocacy the program apprentices work to identify various forms of violence and the effect it has on our personal identities as well as our environment and relationships.

A.C.T.I.O.N

URBAN FOOD JUSTICE In this campaign, ACTION fights for the promotion of food sovereignty. Food sovereignty is the ability to have access to the best quality produce you can. Hunts Point houses the largest food distribution market in the nation, but we have yet to gain access to it. Because of this, Hunts Point is surrounded by unhealthy choices such as fast food. What we do to promote food sovereignty is plant fruits and vegetables and inform the community on how to make better, healthy food choices

WATERFRONT JUSTICE

Waterfront Justice, this can be described in many ways. First, we all use water, water is used for basically everything. Due to climate change almost every year there is another natural disaster that keep on occurring and Hunts Point is not ready for another catastrophe so basically what we want to insure is the Waterfront is protected because if a natural disaster were to occur that is the first to go, we cannot live without water. We need to protect Hunts Point from water contamination and food shortages for basic survival.f

A.C.T.I.O.N REDEFINING REHABILITATION ​ Redefining Rehabilitation’s purpose is to inform ourselves of the legal injustices that the people of the community all don’t know about. Once we, as activists, fully inform ourselves about how to respond to police, we are then able to inform others about their rights as people. We learned that once incarcerated, the basic rights of a human can be stripped.

Most people don’t know that, so through this campaign, it’s our goal to provide others with as much information.

THE SHERIDAN EXPRESSWAY The purpose of this campaign is to inform the community of the use of the Sheridan Expressway. It is a highway that is mostly used by trucks which causes pollution and adds to the asthma rates in the community. The trucks also make it dangerous for pedestrians to cross the streets. We want to provide an alternative way for trucks to enter the major food distribution in Hunts Point to make it safer for residents.

CIRQUE DE VIE/SOCIAL CIRCUS

During the fall session we created and performed two shows implementing learned circus skills. We made sure everyone knew their parts and the order of the shows. Preparing for both the Halloween shows (October 27th and October 31st, 2017) and Holiday shows on (December 19 and 21) we tried to use every circus prop available to us, to show a variety of circus skills. By taking popular movies and reworking the title and premise of the shows we came up with Nightmare on Garrison Street and Home Alone: Circus Edition. From Nightmare on Garrison street, Teddy Cougar’s creepy catch phrase “Spin Me” as he hung from the lyra is now trending in the circus community.

CULINARY ARTS + DESIGN

In the Fall of 2017, the Blank Plate students explored baking and used their workshops to work on different baked goods. They made cookies, cupcakes and pies. At the Point’s Winter Festival, the young bakers sold an assortment of holiday cookies to raise funds for the program.

The Blank Plate program, now in it’s sixth year, has kicked off 2018 with an exploration of world cuisine. The students have been given information on the history of cuisine from different regions of the world and how these cultures have contributed to the story of “food”. To date, the youth have highlighted Italian, American, Mexican and Asian cuisine. The program will also focus on product design, where students will collaborate and come up with a food or drink product to sell that is healthy and delicious. All of these activities will culminate in the annual Blank Plate event in the late Spring where the community will be invited to partake in the ideas and cooking of our newest Blank Plate students and our Chef, Kelston Bascom. d cooking of our newest Blank Plate students and our Chef, Kelston Bascom.

The DIGITAL STEWARDS OF HUNTS POINT is a group of young technology enthusiast with a passion for community development, wifi technology, multimedia, and activism and with the clear aim to build relationships among businesses, residents, and local organization. The DIGITAL STEWARDS build relationships with businesses and residents, maintain, repair and run the network, and manage the social media presence of the network.

FREE HUNTS POINT WIFI is an upcoming community based emergency network housed and governed in the Hunts Point neighborhood. Aside from offering flood, power, and network failure protection, FREE HUNTS POINT WIFI offers opportunities for participating business development as well as educational demonstrations aimed to demystify technology to residents and raise awareness of our current state of communications.

ICP @ THE POINT

Students from ages 9-18 learn the fundamental of black and white photography for 10 weeks (5 weeks in the summer) The program gives students access to photo supplies, camera, and darkroom to gain knowledge of this media. Students focus on personal vision and photographing subjects in their community. During this year, students went on field trips to the International Center of Photography Museum, the Bronx Documentary Center, The Studio Museum in Harlem and The New York Botanical Garden. They were introduced to guest artists Roy Baizan, Frank Fournier, Danny Peralta, Joseph Rodriguez, and Tiffany Smith. Classes culminated in final presentations of students’ work to show to staff, family and friends.

Our teen student Xéla Perryman has branched out from our classroom/lab and is now enrolled in the Color Photo Class at The International Center of Photography’s Teen Academy, where students have the opportunity to learn color and digital photography as well as enhance their white & black skills.

Plans are en route towards the next Vantage Point exhibit, which celebrate ICP at THE POINT’s 20th anniversary. A selection of about thirty-three ICP at THE POINT students and alumni were selected to show their works. To celebrate this anniversary, we have also invited twelve of our alumni who have continued their photography practice on their own.

RED HOOK LABS RED HOOK LABS PHOTO PARTNERSHIP Through the generous support and mentorship of Jim Moffat of Red Hook Labs, the program is in its fifth great year of teaching photography, video and Zines in high schools and community centers in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Led by Joseph Gilmore, Bashira Webb and Mark Nevers, once students who were part of Point programming and now teachers themselves, the program instructs in camera and studio skills at all levels and has had numerous local and international exhibitions to great acclaim, including an ongoing educational exchange partnership with the highly esteemed FOAM Museum of Amsterdam. There has been everything from class trips to Vogue magazine and a wonderful tour by Tonne Goodman, its Fashion Director, to chronicling the ever-changing Brooklyn waterfront, to terrific partnerships with CK and ongoing industry jobs training and internships. The Red Hook Labs photo project has produced dynamic engaging work by the students and instructors helping to connect their neighborhoods and their talents to the world at large in truly remarkable and everlasting ways.

South Bronx Resiliency Arts Fellowship 2018 Summer 2017. Artists, Isabelle Garbani, Mariposa and Roy Secord created various works that engaged the Hunts Point Community in a dialogue about resiliency and what it means to the Hunts Point Peninsula. Funded by the EDC-nyc, this was a groundbreaking move on their part to put forward a new means to communicate hard facts about climate change and move forward strategies to address it THROUGH THE ARTS
