Literacy

Literacy at THE POINT strives to engage youth in the culture of reading, writing, and sharing ones thoughts. Youth are encouraged to question and challenge subjects and themes brought to them.

This year children in the after-school program touched on a variety of subjects. Such topics were: becoming more familiar with verbal equations of showing praise and empathy (shown in UNITAS); and this year’s book “The Children of Children Keep Coming”. These two themes brought out a variety of projects that all youth participated in. In concentrating what our goals are from different parts of our life, youth created Seeds of Change, GIF’s on resolving unfair treatment they have known, and free write poems on their view on the success of their personal goals. This year was filled with an encouragement to use writing, reading, and creative expression to look within our selves.

All of after-school made their seeds of change leaves in which they shared something they would like to change in their life, and what it would look like for them after doing so. ENVIRONMENT CLASS

Here Group D is working on the THE POINT CDC’s garden, loosing up the soil so the ground can have oxygen and water flow through it.

Prepping the ground is important for the plants that will be grown in the garden. Loose earth helps plants become healthy.

The children learned how to shovel , brake up the soil and how to use rakes to smooth out and level the ground. Gardening was a great way to get the kids learning about how their food grows while keeping them active.

CITY�YEAR�CLUBS Team Swag with Scott and Camay Group F had the opportunity to brainstorm ideas and topics that were of interest to them for Team Swag discussions and activities. Team SWAG provided experiential learning, as students were taught how to write lesson plans and facilitate their very own Team SWAG sessions. Students worked together in pairs or worked individually to share through a workshop, group discussion or crafted activity an issue or topic they valued and felt passionate about.

Latin Dance with Anel and Aimee Latin Dance is a class where students learned about different dances from Latin countries. Some dances we focused on were Salsa, Merengue and Bachata. Students were taught the history and origins of the different dances, learned the basic steps and shared it back with the class. My highlight of the class was showing students clips of people performing Latin dance. They were very excited when I showed them clips of Mad Hot Ballroom, a documentary about New York City elementary students being introduced to the world of ballroom dancing.

Team Swag

Fashion Swag with Aimee, Esther, Lydia, and Begonia Fashion swag is where students got to express their creativity through fashion. Some activities included designing holiday outfits, designing a sneaker/shoe template, experimenting with different fabrics, re-creating your school uniform and creating accessories such as necklaces, bracelets and scarves.

Civic Engagement with Aimee, Scott, Esther, and Begonia In Civic Engagement students explored and discussed community service. We talked about community and what does it look like to them. We discussed some of the problems that students face in their community such as homelessness, violence, drugs, poverty and some possible solutions to these problems. We also discussed some community services ideas they would like to do in their community. We came up with a community service project that can possibly be implemented at THE POINT.

Story Time Club with Anel and Aimee Group A had the opportunity to enrich their reading skills through different interactive activities. Students had the opportunity to listen to different stories that related back to our society.

Story time also served as a way for students to learn basic reading skills; like using a bookmark and learning how to use a dictionary.

Art of Words with Emily and Andrew Art of Words is a class that focuses on teaching children how to express themselves through spoken word. This class explored topics such as Hurricane Sandy, bullying, school, and other issues while also discussing prolific writers/performers from their community (Jay Z, Sarah Kay, and Langston Hughes).

Through spoken word, children can learn how to be creative and get their message out to their community.

CITY�YEAR�CLUBS Karate with Lydia, Begonia, and Esther This year in karate club, the curriculum has focused primarily on the basics of Shotokan Karate. It has been stressed that karate is a defensive sport. Students first learned different blocks and then moved on to kicks, punches, and kata. Near the end of the year, we have also been focusing on incorporating elements of fitness into all classes.

Fitness and Nutrition with Begonia and Emily For fitness and nutrition club we had a variety of activities that allowed us to engage our after school students. For this club, we taught students proper workout techniques based on their age; we also talked to them about different diets, and we even talked to them about vegetarian diets and we cooked tofu burgers for them, which they absolutely loved. Throughout the year we also presented them with different challenges, such as the water challenge were we encouraged them to drink three cups of water for a week, and we also did different vegetable and fruit challenges to encourage healthy eating.

Crafts with Esther and Aimee This half of the year Group B has been saving their pieces of work each class and hanging them on their individual hangers for an ‘end of year’ display. Some of the work we have done in our sessions are Peace Doves (Black History Month) , Self Portrait puzzles (Black History Month), Lucky Irish Hats for St. Patrick’s Day, Creative Musical Instruments, Reflection Hand Hearts and Our Social Solar Systems. We have been trying to understand we are all creative and there is no one way to create pieces of expression.

Step with Bernadette During Step Class, students had the opportunity to learn several different routines as well as ways to take their high energy and redirect it into their performance. Within our Step Class, students also learned call and response; they were given the opportunity to come up with their very own routines. Step class is a great way to stress the importance of teamwork as well as listening to each other. Because my students did so well during that class, they were able to perform for everyone during That Kid’s On Point. Step also offered up a discrete opportunity of teaching discipline such as controlling ourselves, knowing when and where to stand in place. Most importantly, they were able to be creative with creating beats with their body movements.

50 Acts of greatness with Bernadette To put a spin on the class, I focused on what I feel is the most important act of greatness; Leadership. Turning what were “50 Acts of Greatness” into “The many acts of Leadership.” The class started in the month of February, also known as Black History Month therefore I focused on African American leaders. Once Black History Month was over, we focused on ways of becoming better leaders, what traits we carry now, and what traits we would like to develop. Assignments included in this class were letters students wrote to a leader of their choice of pass, present, or future and a Leadership Rap. Students were given the opportunity to come up with their very own bars (lines in a rap song) on the things they learned about leaders and leadership.

Visual Arts

This year students from group B and F worked with artist in residence, Alejandra Delfin, on a variety of techniques; collage, painting, plastilina and printmaking. Their work was based on the book “The Children of the Children Keep Coming� by Russell L. Goings, illustrated by African-American artist, Romare Bearden. Goings calls his book an epic griot poem based on the history and struggle of African Americans. The students made images that depicted their own imagined trip on the underground railroad and their path to freedom. The students experimented first hand how to make collages based on Bearden's technique and style.

They also created panels for a collaborative paper quilt using geometric shapes, based on the idea that quilts could have been a secret language or map.

We also collaborated with Cirque du Monde making life size figures that were used as a backdrop for their final showcase. Last but not least, students made their own Mother’s Day cards with etched foam that they printed on paper.

Visual Arts

Aficionado Workshops under the direction of Carey Clark, worked on a number of public art projects and exhibitions. Ashanti Meade, 15, already a passionate collagist worked on a piece, “My Idols�, also based on the Goings book, but choosing her own heroes rather than the ones explored in the book. This was for an exhibition at the Veteran's Hospital in Kingsbridge. Under the direction of Melissa Costa, our Literacy Specialist, over 30 students made an eight foot tree out of foamboard decorated with leaves made by the children with notes about their ideas of change drawn by a passage from the book. We also continued work on SYEP's summer project under the direction of Kristina Pugh, Murelate, where teen artists made images based on healthy relationships. David Yearwood, 18, continued his ambitious 7'x 7' panel and Ashanti added her own to the mix. We are hoping that this will be the inaugural mural for the handsome Food Center Drive Wall on Halleck. Ray Lopez was commissioned by Open Hydrant to paint set pieces for Fools in Love, their adaptation of Shakespeare's Mid Summer Nights's dream, and David Yearwood made a little orchestra of instruments out of foambaord for Cirque's after school final showcase.

Collaboration was definitely the key to success in the Visual Arts program this year.

MUSIC

MUSIC We had another rockin’ year of music at THE POINT with groups A&B playing games and learning about instruments. They learned about latin percussion and the brass family. They also learned about The Jackson 5. Our City Year helpers were Esther and Scott. They were soooooo cool. Our teens came back for their Tuesday night jam sessions as well as rehearsals. We now have a new teen band called Warhead. Rock On!

Aquaponics Aquaponics is sustainably growing fish and plants in recirculating systems. It can also be thought of as a balanced combination of Aquaculture (fish farming) and Hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil), while striving for maximum resource efficiency (low energy, low water usage, sustainable food resources etc.).

This year SAVEfarms.org @THE POINT continued to receive a tremendous amount of positive news and media attention for our work teaching, incubating and consulting on all aspects of Sustainable Urban Farming, Food Justice and Integration of the Food Vertical.

This year we taught Groups B and C, in the After-School Program and as well as a few extra passionate student interns and interested community members.

Through observation, discussions, artwork and hands-on experience the students were exposed to Aquaponics and many other aspects of Sustainable Urban Farming, including chicken keeping and wild food foraging. This spring the students worked hard to help decorate, maintain, teardown, and re-build our Aquaponic systems filled with as many as 30 tilapia fingerlings and mint. The students also helped decorate, maintain, tear-down and re-build the Aquaculture system involving well over a dozen fish tanks and hundreds of fish.

SAVEfarms.org @ THE POINT, also with student, intern and community participation, started a CSF – Community Supported Fisheries, in the Fall of 2012. During the membership period we offered super fresh sustainably caught seafood from GABE THE FISH BABE and Pt Judith, Rhode Island fishermen direct to community at THE POINT. Unsold surplus fish were cooked & donated by Vertically Integrated Farms to participants in the Teen Circus program and community.

We are proud to help grow young people who can look at the fish & seafood, produce, poultry and eggs sections at the supermarket and not only realize what’s fresh and what’s not, but they know that they themselves could grow some of what they see there, in their own home.

Open Hydrant’s mission is to create an ensemble-based, Equity theater company in the densely populated, yet under served, community of the South Bronx. Our purpose is to produce yearly seasons of creative works by new playwrights, as well as non-traditional interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays. We are committed to empowering a diverse group of cross-cultural artists, ages 6 to 96, whose work is designed to educate, entertain and help revitalize urban communities. In doing so, Open Hydrant will: --Function as an artistic home for an Equity theater company whose artists are empowered to explore their craft and cultivate their unique gifts and talents --Focus on the works of William Shakespeare to help audiences “Conquer Your Shakes-fear” --Forge bonds between the school and community by showcasing student work --Enhance the development of youth in the South Bronx through cooperative ventures with local schools that will result in Equity points for students through an Equity Membership Candidate Program --Develop partnerships with established professional organizations including, but not limited to, THE POINT CDC, The Public Theater, the New York Drama Teachers’ Shakespeare Festival, Cirque du Monde, Festival of New American Musicals, the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and Colorado’s Wheeler Opera House --Participate in national and international tours, film festivals, theater festivals, and established outreach theater programs --Offer affordable theater classes for community members’ artistic growth --Foster in youth a life-long desire to reinvest in their community.

The A.C.E. after-school and in-school programs have been developing over the years since 2004. Our program enables students to have a better view and understanding of their relationship with all instructors they will come across for the rest of their academia life. Our games and exercises promote interactive learning: ·

Focused on that classrooms’ teacher (the source of explanation);

Ask engaging questions – holding their interest during class-time;

·

Not copying classmates – so important to the foundation of self-confidence and self-esteem;

·

Willingness to make mistakes – exploration of their creativity through movement;

·

Dynamic partner-work improves concentration, reaction time, and problem-solving abilities.

·

Healthy physical outlets reduce behavioral issues and over time children connect with our instructors to meet a common ground for the advancement in “the roda”, education, and daily life experiences.

ICP at THE POINT

ICP at THE POINT is a partnership between International Center of Photography and THE POINT CDC. Students ages 9 to 18+, learn basic black & white photography through hands-on activities. They learn how to use manual 35mm SLR cameras, process film and print photographs in a darkroom.

Each semester, students will receive a theme course describing the curriculum. The curriculum includes: writing assignments, slideshows, discussions, a guest artist visiting and a field-trip.

At the end of the sessions, students create a portfolio of prints and an artist statement to present to family and friends.

BLANK PLATE Culinary Arts + Design

Blank Plate is a series of creative culinary classes that use the power of design and hands-on activities to inspire Hunts Point teens, encouraging them to make new connections with their community and transforming their relationship to food through creative culinary experiences.

Beats Rhymes & Life Beats Rhymes and Life uses Hip Hop as a catalyst for change and development. The group is co-facilitated by a teaching artist (Earl Skinner) and social worker (Myrtho Gardiner). A.C.T.I.O.N. (Activists Coming to Inform Our Neighborhood) A.C.T.I.O.N. Mission A.C.T.I.O.N is a group of stipended youth who work to identify social and environmental justice issues facing the South Bronx. They also work together with community members and fellow community organizations to be a community link for the re-envisioning of Hunts Point.

First day of gardening for the 2013 season down at our Riverside Campus. Planting different seedlings for a number of vegetables, herbs and flowers like basil, cabbage gerber daisies!

We implement grassroots techniques in community planning and policy, and disseminate such information to the community. A.C.T.I.O.N. serves as role models for positive change for the current generation in Hunts Point. Meeting three times per week, we address issues and gain the following skills: Advocacy: Participants learn the fundamentals of environmental justice, study the current issues in the South Bronx, and work to inform others in the community about these issues as well as work toward a solution.

Emoti-con 2013 where we presented the draft version of our A.C.T.I.O.N. website and where we were honored by the Hive Network by having the first ever youth keynote speaker, former A.C.T.I.O.N. member Teresa Rivera and first ever youth judge, current A.C.T.I.O.N. president Omar Rodriguez.

Academic Support: All participants’ academic progress is monitored closely and tutoring is provided. Through collaborations with THE POINT’s education staff and other organizations, all juniors and seniors receive SAT preparation and help with the college application process. A minimum GPA of 75% is required.

Media Training: Participants take part in media and technology instruction, where they are taught computer literacy, web design, computer programming and blogging.

Youth Development: Participants will become leaders by gaining experience and assistance in public speaking, job training, resume writing, and communication skills and effectiveness.

A.C.T.I.O.N. says goodbye to our graduating seniors: Omar Rodriguez, Marissa Allicea, Yves Celestin, Justin McMillan, Imtiaz Shovon, Guessan Effi, Jacob Chen Carrasco, Rossemary Gomez, and Ruth Tirado. W.O.M.E.N. (Where Our Minds Empower Needs) This has been a crazy year for WOMEN! We fundraised 3,500 dollars in order to go through business classes. We developed a prototype for an app, and are getting ready for FEMALE FLAVA! We've not only grown as a family but as a support network. We are building and establishing a life style where women-identified people can express themselves.

From fundraising to believing in their writings, to a dressy photo shoot, these ladies are creating sustainable change!

The strategic mission of M.I.S.T.E.R is to prepare and position men to become effective leaders and mentors within their community. In many ways men are merely existing and surviving as opposed to living a fulfilled and impactful life in these challenging circumstances we face today. This is why there is a need for Men’s Empowerment groups like M.I.S.T.E.R. This progressive thought is what motivates these young men to be dedicated towards improving the quality of life not just for themselves but also for their families, and those around them. Although we are focused on the development and empowerment of men, we believe in the full equality of women.
