ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE As The Sarasota Players steps into an exciting new chapter, we find ourselves at a powerful moment of reflection and possibility. With new leadership and an energized Board of Directors who bring both deep roots and fresh perspective, we are standing at the threshold of a renewed vision, one that honors our past while boldly shaping our future. As Artistic Director, I am incredibly proud and excited to help guide this next era as we move toward an extraordinary milestone: 100 years as Sarasota’s oldest theatre. Our focus is clear. We are committed to strengthening our mission and investing in what has always made The Sarasota Players special. At our heart, we are not simply a building or a stage, we are a community. A community of artists, students, educators, volunteers, audiences, and supporters who believe in the power of storytelling and the transformative impact of theatre and theatre education. It is this shared passion that has carried us through decades of change and continues to propel us forward. This season reflects that belief. It is rooted in connection, creativity, and courage, celebrating voices both familiar and new, honoring tradition while embracing innovation, and creating space for learning, growth, and joy. Whether you are joining us as a lifelong patron or stepping into our theatre for the very first time, you are an essential part of this story. We are playing on. We are building toward the future with intention and heart. And as we return for our third act, we do so together, grateful for where we’ve been, inspired by where we’re going, and ready to continue telling stories that bring us closer, challenge us, and remind us why live theatre matters.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE WELCOME TO HOPE FALLS, WEST VIRGINIA! The character of “Bat Boy” fluttered to stardom in 1992 when the satirical Weekly World News dropped a story about a half-bat, half boy creature found in a cave. Five years later, we had an onstage hero that didn’t look like the others. Bat Boy: the Musical is played best when it’s done with “the height of expression and the depth of sincerity,” according to original director and co-writer, Keythe Farley. When it came to choreography, staging, costumes, and character work, I took inspiration from John Waters, who is wildly good at delivering camp while still living truthfully, and working with a $10 budget. (Donate to The Players!) This show is ridiculously fun, and I can guarantee you will laugh a LOT, but it’s also a love story with themes of empathy and acceptance, growth, and facing your inner demons. Many actors play multiple characters, sometimes finishing up a quick change as they run onstage, so we’re relying on you as the audience to use your imagination. I feel at times, we have lost the joy and simplicity of storytelling. Bat Boy doesn’t have a fancy LED screen, no helicopters or plummeting chandeliers, and without the flash and trash, it ends up being more fun and emotional, because it goes back to the roots of storytelling, relying on its audience to participate in the magic. The final line of the show is “don’t deny your beast inside.” Many, if not all, of the residents of Hope Falls release their beast at least once throughout this story. But Bat Boy’s beast is visible. He has fangs and pointy ears. He’s different and treated as such. This is a story of ridiculousness and satire, but also a deep dive into bigotry and intolerance, misunderstanding/miscommunication, unexpected twists, heartbreaking revelations, and plenty of things to talk about on the ride home. Who knew you’d learn a thing or two from a show called Bat Boy: the Musical? Thank you so much for being here and supporting what we do at The Sarasota Players. This cast and creative team are incredible. If you like what you see, please tell your friends. Post on Facebook and Instagram. Tag us. Word of mouth makes our world go ‘round. If you don’t like what you see, lie to your friends and tell them you loved it.
Enjoy the show! Brian F. Finnerty Director, Choreographer & Scenic Designer
