from a current student at her school. This is an issue that made me reflect on the estonishing ability of neglitience we seem to have towards rape-an issue that is shocking and provokes reactions, yet we still seem to be passive towards as an ongo-

ing part of our reality. In the same light, check out the misconceptions of feminism on page 8.

Breastfeeding in Public: Yes or No? Montrealers fight alongside mothers to end the prejudice on public breastfeeidng CANDICE PYE CONTRIBUTOR

Despite the fact that a woman’s right to breastfeed in public is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, breastfeeding women have recently been subject to increasing accounts of harassment. Though a woman has the right to breastfeed wherever she is legally allowed to be, many restaurant owners, store managers and other persons of authority in public locations strongly disapprove of breastfeeding in the public eye, especially within their own edifices.

Noah Busschaert, long-time manager of Jack Astor’s Bar and Grill, sat down to answer a few questions about his restaurant’s policies on breastfeeding as well as give his personal opinion.

“I often think of Jack Astor’s as its own microcosm in society when it comes to issues like this,” he began. “We’re pretty non-pretentious and open-minded.”

He went on to speak about a complaint he once received from an elderly couple regarding a woman breastfeeding at a nearby table. He explained that it was the only incident where this type of complaint had been expressed within the many years he has worked for the restaurant chain. He divulged that the woman was not covered up, and that, though he understood why the couple might have been uncomfortable, there was no way to express that distaste without being rude.

cent mother to leave my restaurant,” Busschaert exclaimed. “It’s not appropriate to ask that of someone, especially because breastfeeding is the mother’s business and no one else’s. We need to start going to bat for the woman; the world is going in that direction anyways.”

There have been numerous reports and public statements made by breastfeeding mothers on social media, bringing up sim-

ilar personal experiences with breastfeeding-based harassment. Being expelled from public locations and being asked to breastfeed in public restroom stalls are just a few of these instances. These reports have led to several movements such as the trending hashtag “#FreeTheNipple” and the “When Nurture Calls” campaign; a series of photos of mothers breastfeeding their children in public restroom stalls

taken by Kris Haro and Johnathan Wenske. As a result, many social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have updated their obscenity guidelines to ensure that photos of breastfeeders are not flagged as inappropriate.

Busschaert commented, “People are reacting negatively to one of the most primal and important necessities in life - a mother feeding her child. Is that really

something we can call obscene?” He then added, “I wouldn’t ask an adult customer to eat in the bathroom of my restaurant, so why would I ask a child to?”

There are many people who do not support breastfeeding in public places and who argue that, if a woman does chose to do so, she must cover up as they believe it is basic decency and they feel uncomfortable seeing a woman exposed and barechested in a public location. Often times, these situations will lead to confrontations.

Busschaert expressed that he would understand why breastfeeding in public might cause a brief sense of awkwardness or discomfort, especially among a more conservative demographic, but that it should not be a source of anger, frustration or disgust.

“You see women wearing little-to-no clothing on magazine covers and on the sides of buses every day and that’s socially acceptable,” concluded Busschaert. “But when a mother is using her breasts for the one thing they’re actually intended to do, it’s a scandal? Do we not have better things to do than to sexualize a woman’s breasts in their most basic and innocent use?”

The legal rights, social media movements and general opinions on the subject all put the shaming of these women into the perspective from both sides. Confrontations based on breastfeeding discrimination and involving these two sides can be seen by many mothers as none other than sex discrimination and a violation of basic human rights. There are codes in place to protect and support women on this basis.

Fine Arts student Emma Sulkowicz has vowed to carry her dorm room mattress with her wherever she goes, as long as she still attends the same school as her alleged rapist.

The 21-year-old says that in August of 2012, a fellow student raped her in her dorm room.

She hesitated to report the incident right away because she felt embarrassed and ashamed of what had happened. However, when she tried to bring justice to her situation by filing a complaint in April 2013, the university refused to do anything about it, claiming that her rapist was not be held responsible.

As a graduating student doing her senior thesis, Sulkowicz is carrying her mattress with her every day as a performance piece that she is titling “Mattress Performance” or “Carry That Weight”.

The artist has set up a few rules in carrying out her performance piece: she cannot go anywhere without bringing her mattress along with her, she cannot ask for help carrying the 20 pounds of foam from others, but can receive help if it is offered to her, and the performance piece

will have to continue until her alleged rapist is expelled or she graduates.

Sulkowicz views her project as an “endurance performance art piece”, because it is symbolic of the mental weight she has carried for so long as a result of the incident, and it “utilizes elements of protest”.

continue with my day but also heavy enough that I have to continually struggle with it," she told the Columbia Spectator.

Since starting her piece, other students at the university have come forward with their stories of being sexually abused by the same student, who received the same inaction by the university as Sulkowicz.

Recently, her mission has gone viral, and

the Columbia student has become the accidental face of various anti-rape movements spreading through college campuses across the country. Other students have followed her example by picking up their own mattresses to speak out against sexual assault on campus.

A photo of Sulkowicz and the twin-sized blue mattress has been featured on the cover of New York magazine for their

September 22nd issue, accompanied by a headline that reads “A Very Different Kind of Sexual Revolution on Campus”.

She has received praise for her fight against remaining silent, her project being viewed as a “brilliantly plotted movement against sexual assault”, as it not only speaks to her attacker, but to the American university system.

The movement has spread online with the “Carrying the Weight Together” Facebook group, which showcases photos of people holding up mattresses in support and solidarity.

“Collective carry” events similar to the one online have taken place at multiple universities, and more are in the process of being planned.

Thousands of college students are sexually assaulted every year, and it is estimated that that statistic is larger, as many do not come forward and report instances of sexual assault.

For those who do speak out against their assaulters, often nothing is done to bring justice to the situation at hand, nor is anything put in place in hopes of preventing the incidents from happening again.

In light of the recent movement started

by Sulkowicz however, the Department of Evaluation is currently investigating the way various colleges and universities have handled reports of sexual assault.

Hong Kong protestors take to streets HILLEL STEINMETZ CONTRIBUTOR By late September, thousands of people were part of the student-led protests in Hong Kong’s various districts. The movement started in response to the Chinese government’s proposed electoral reform, which if it passes would allow it to vet political candidates in Honk Kong. As a result, the city is in a state of disarray, which will only increase if no reconciliation between the government and protesters comes shortly.

As a result, many protesters began bringing umbrellas to shield themselves, which has led to the protests being dubbed the “Umbrella Revolution.”

Hong Kong differs greatly from mainland China. Principally a Western city, it is a hub of innovation, technology and commerce. Up until 1997, Hong Kong was under British Rule for a 99-year lease.

When the lease expired, the People’s Republic of China reclaimed control of the city under a joint declaration with the UK that the city would be granted a certain autonomy, including maintaining its economic system for fifty years.

China also promised to uphold at least part of Beijing’s constitution. This was a clear manifestation of China’s “One China, Two Systems” policy to encourage reunification, as was also evident in Tai-

Eruption of Mount Otanke SARA CAPANNA STAFF WRITER September 28th proved to be a grim day for Japanese rescue workers, when 31 dead bodies were found on the summit of the still-erupting volcano, Mount Ontake. According to Nagano prefecture crisis management official Takehiko Furukoshi, 27 of these were found in either a mountain lodge near the mount's summit or buried in up to 50 centimeters of ash.

Mount Ontake, the tallest volcano in Japan after Mount Fuji located 210 kilometers west of Tokyo, is a popular climbing destination. It is one of the 110 active volcanoes in Japan, which is situated above the ‘Ring of Fire’ band of fault lines and volcanoes on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. No lives were lost in Ontake’s last relatively large eruption in 1979. Then, the eruption lasted months, gushing approximately 200,000 tons of ash.

This volcanic eruption happened before noon on September 27th. A worker of a local shrine, Shinici Shimohara, reports hearing a sound then that seemed to be caused by a strong wind and thunder.

“For a while I heard thunder pounding a number of times," he reports. "Soon after, some climbers started descending.

Around 250 climbers taking advantage of the beautiful weather were initially stranded. Fortunately, most were able to descend by that same night. Over 40 individuals left on the slope overnight were rescued the next day, though most of

these sustained injuries and required helicopters and stretchers to get down. In one instance, defense Ministry official Toshihiko Muraki reports, it took three helicopter trips to take seven people off the mountainside. The priority in this rescue mission was given to the survivors that could be the most easily rescued.

Evidence of this could be seen over this past weekend, at which time the protests began to die down. Others have been dissuaded by police crackdowns and the possible impending disaster on Hong Kong’s economy if the violence continues. Already, the city state’s stocks have plummeted and tourism has seen a significant decrease. There is a clear sense that Hongkongers are anxious for a return to normalcy.

Only time will tell whether the protests will have had a significant impact on the political matters at stake. Standing resolutely in front of powerful China has its consequences but can mean a better future for Hong Kong. Essentially, a victory would mean that the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy will carry the day, and the Pearl of the Orient, retain its partial autonomy that has long ensured its prosperity.

Speaking of the danger of volcanic eruptions, volcanologist Koshun Yamaoka says that "even small eruptions can cause major damage if people are around, as they get hit by rocks that come flying." Given these potentially catastrophic consequences, the Japanese Self Defense Force deployed seven helicopters and 250 troops, as well as a plethora of policemen and firefighters, to aid in the rescue.

Sadly, a few climbers are still missing.

Their desperate relatives gathered over the weekend and are pleading for information from Japanese authorities.

Among these is Kiyokazu Tokoro, whose son Yuki went hiking with his girlfriend.

The latter sent a photo to a friend a few minutes before the eruption, revealing that the couple was near the summit. "All I can do is beg for your help to get information," he told CNN. "Please help us."

Since the eruption, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has put Otaki on high alert, raising the Volcanic Alert Level from 1 to 3, out of a possible five.

It has also advised the public not to approach the volcano. Another large Otaki eruption is expected in the next week, even as small ones continue to take place.

Flight delays are plaguing Japanese airports due to an increase in smoke and ash.

U.N. sponsors militia discussions MATAIS BRUNET-KIRK CONTRIBUTOR On September 29th the first U.N.-brokered talks between rival Libyan factions were held in Ghadames, Libya. The oilproducing North-African country of Libya has been awash in political tension and violence since the House of Representatives, democratically elected in July, was ousted from power in Tripoli by a rival political faction from the city of Misrata.

Several hours before the announcement of talks, Prime Minister Abdullah AlThani and his cabinet took the oath of office. Previous U.N. backed talks held in July failed when allegations of international interference emerged.

The U.N. stated that the goal of the discussions was to address “the critical issues relating to the governance of the country."

After the rival group from Misrata set up a new House of Representatives dubbed the “national council,” the organization saw an urgent need for discussions to prevent a political conflict from devolving into an allout civil war.

From the start, U.N. special envoy Bernandido Leon believed that for this initiative to be effective, there had to be “a political process…(and) a complete ceasefire all over the country.”

The ceasefire was agreed to by the rival factions. Both sides have also accepted to hold negotiations composed of 12 members from each faction, with additional supervision by several international deputies.

These agreements have given the country facing a deepening humanitarian crisis respite after months of clashes.

According to the American Libyan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a necessary prerequisite to lasting stability is the acceptance by Libyan rebel groups of extended talks. According to the U.N., those agreed to already are a “positive” step forward.

U.N. meets to promote world welfare ALEXANDRA KAMINSKI STAFF WRITER This week, the United Nations General Assembly is taking place. More than 140 world leaders from around the world are converging at Turtle Bay, Manhattan to discuss the urgent matters of the day.

Throughout the conference, each head of state will be granted 15 minutes to speak to the delegates about the issues concerning her country. UN officials will then chair each topic, to facilitate lengthy discussions about how to bring each matter to a satisfactory conclusion.

This is the 69th year of the UN General Assembly.

One of the first issues to be discussed is climate action, which will be chaired by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon. Certain governments, local leaders and representatives from the private sector are hoping to build a new global climate agreement by 2015, and most of Tuesday has been reserved to discuss this matter.

Later that day, Obama will address the Clinton Global annual meeting. There will also be a special session on Somalia, and a

meeting on Syria chaired by Britain’s foreign secretary Philip Hammond.

On Wednesday, the General Assembly debates begin. On this day, the first of the 140 leaders will have their 15 minutes to speak of the pressing issues concerning

their countries. Later that day, there will be a Security Council session on the Islamic State (IS). President Obama will chair this discussion, aimed at producing an agreement from member countries on defeating IS both economically and on the

battlefield.

On Thursday, a second day of debates will be held, at which time speakers like Iran, Ukraine, Egypt, Latvia, and Iraq will have a chance to speak. That afternoon, there will be a summit meeting on Ebola,

chaired again by Ban Ki-moon. It is hoped that world leaders will pledge contributions to eradicate the disease. Finally, there will be a meeting on the power of veto.

There are five countries in the Security Council with veto power and France will host this session in hopes of eliminating this privilege in cases of mass atrocities.

On Friday, countries including Lithuania, Yemen, Afghanistan and Palestine will get their opportunity to speak. In the afternoon, there will be a session on UN peacekeeping, chaired by US vice-president Joe Biden. This meeting aims to increase the number of troop-contributing nations and financial donations.

This is the 69th year of the UN General Assembly. Some celebrities involved in international causes will be present, incluing (the environmental) U.N. Messenger of Peace representative Leonardo DiCaprio, Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s gender equality arm Emma Watson, and spokeswoman for the health of women and children, Victoria Beckham.

From climate change to sexual violence in conflict zones, this year’s UN general assembly has a lot to discuss and resolve.

Each session will attempt to form consensus amongst the world leaders as a first step in controlling, reducing, and eliminating the problems plaguing the world.

Top five dramas to watch this Fall JOYCE SALEM CONTRIBUTOR When the weather starts getting cold and our homework starts piling up, we all get the same feeling.

We just want to sit on the couch in our favourite onesie, with a cup of tea or hot chocolate, watching all of our favourite shows.

Here are five new and returning shows that you should check out this fall.

5. Arrow Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), a billionaire party boy, was supposedly killed on a shipwreck with his father and his girlfriend’s sister Sara (Caity Lotz).

But unlike what everyone thought, he spent five years on an island and taught himself the skill of archery to survive.

When he returned to Starling City, his mother, Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson), her new husband, Walter Steele (Colin Salmon), his sister Thea (Willa Holland), his best friend Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell) and his ex-girlfriend Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) welcomed him home without noticing that he became Green Arrow.

So with the help of John Diggle (David Ramsey), his bodyguard, and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), a computer science graduate, the team tries to get rid of people who “failed this city”.

We also get to see flashbacks of Oliver’s life on the island. By the end of the season, he has to make a choice between killing Deathstroke (Manu Bennett), a super strong criminal who is destroying the city, or sticking to his word.

There is also a new addition to the team, Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) who has been injected with the same supersoldier liquid as Deathstroke.

Even if you’ve read the comics or not, the show has a lot of surprises in store so make sure to check out the season premier Wednesday, October 8th at 8 P.M. on CTV! 4. Revenge Amanda Clarke (Emily VanCamp) blames the Graysons for her father, David Clarke’s (James Tupper) death after reading the journals he left her.

So she decides to become Emily Thorne to bring the family down more smoothly. But with a plan that precise she needs a team of friends, her best friend Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann) and her long lost first love, Jack Porter (Nick Wechsler) to support her crazy ideas.

Fortunately, last season her mission would have ended when she made everyone believe that Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) was crazy and imprisoned Conrad Greyson (Henry Czerny).

But just when we thought the deed was done, David Clarke comes back from the dead and kills one of the Graysons.

Of course her father’s come back is super exciting to the fans but what will be her reaction to this revelation? To find out, tune in every sunday at 10 P.M. o’clock on ABC. 3. How To Get Away With Murder The same creator of Grey’s anatomy and Scandal, Shonda Rhimes is back with a brand new show that’s going to blow your mind.

How to get away with murder is the title of the law class taken by many students in the show.

At the end of the first episode five of them are selected to work for Professor Annalise Keating (Viola Davis).

They help her find evidence to make their clients seem less guilty. But what happens when they become tangled in a murder themselves?

Are they trained well enough to stage the perfect murder? In only two episode fans were drawn to this show, we already can’t get enough!

So if you’re a fan of mysteries watch this show thursday at 10 P.M. on ABC. 2. The Good Wife Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) is a lawyer who graduated at the top of her class from Georgetown University.

Nobody is who they say they are, nobody is all good and nobody is all bad.

Also, it’s the kind of show you find yourself rooting for Olivia Pope to get her happy ending with President Fitzgerald even if he is married to Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young).

Last season the show ended with Olivia getting on a plane to get away from her chaotic life while the president’s son was murdered.

Now this may be the most dramatic thing that happens on any other show but on this one it’s just another thursday night.

So brace yourselves because everything you think you know about the world, about television and about yourself will be forever changed after watching Scandal Thursday night at 9 P.M. on ABC!

Canadian singer Lights presents electropop beats ANASTASSIA TARASSOVA STAFF WRITER This week, the Ontario-born electropop diva presented her fanbase a fresh release of her new full-length album: Little Machines.

Lights first became a singer at the age of 15, when performing with a metal band entitled Shovel Face.

She is now performing solo and is wife of Blessthefall lead vocalist and proud mother of an adorable tiny human.

Throughout her career, Lights has collaborated with artists, such as Silverstein, Rich Aucoin, Bring me the Horizon and Owl City.

Throughout her solo career, the artist has released two full length albums, respectively The Listening (2009) and Siberia (2011).

The two have reached various high rankings in different pop charts and, inci-

dentally, were nominated for several awards.

The new album, described as ‘’a delightful synth-rock confection’’ by Purevolume.com, features 11 tracks.

For this particular release, the musician stated Björk, Patti Smith and Kate Bush as main sources of inspiration.

Little Machines was extremely well-received by her fans.

Seriously, as I do this research, all that keeps popping up are tweets, Facebook and Tumblr posts of how great the new album is and how listeners struggle to pick a favorite amongst these sweet tunes.

Well done, Lights, well done. ‘’Up We Go’’ was the first single from Little Machines, released at the end of July.

It is a very light, playful and pleasant electropop composition, and one of the few tracks on the CD that maintain the same atmosphere as her Siberia album.

A second single, ‘’Portal’’ followed shortly after. An official video was re-

leased, portraying the artist on a road trip, in melancholic black and white.

Overall, the whole album is full of delicious 80s beats and more contemporary, lively and childish tunes, with poetic names such as ‘’Meteorites’’ and ‘’Same Sea’’.

The last track, ‘’Don’t Go Home without Me’’ is a beautiful ode to melancholy and dreaminess that gracefully concludes this wonderful opus.

Lights is a very respectable pop musician whose stream of creativity has not dried out yet, even after 12 whole years of art and performance.

Little Machines has distanced itself from the dubstep-ish sounds of Siberia, broadening the artist’s horizons and embracing a more eclectic and creative sound.

Lights will be performing at Le National on October 18th (that’s a Saturday) as part of her North American and European tour.

Foreign Finds Awesome International Artists

ANASTASSIA TARASSOVA STAFF WRITER New Pants is a pop-punk band from Beijing. They are (relatively) radical, loud, and awesome.

The quartet is composed of vocalist / guitarist Peng Lei, bassist Zhao ‘’Dream’’ Meng, keyboardist Pang Kuan and drummer Shi Deheng, all in their early 20s.

Currently, they are considered one of the most outstanding acts of modern music in the People’s Republic of China.

The band was created when leaders Peng Lei and Pang Kuan met at the Beijing Art University in 1996.

Since then, apart from being remarkable musicians, Peng has become an accomplished filmmaker/animator and Pang, a renowned graphic designer.

The first self-titled debut appeared in 1998. The front man, Peng Lei, claims he was inspired by such occidental bandsas KISS and The Ramones during the writing process.

Overall, New Pants has released seven full-length albums and some EPs, the most recent opus being Go East in 2009.

A few official videos have been also been released, for such songs as ‘’Bye Bye Disco’’ and ‘’Sex Drugs Internet’’, in 2012.

Some of their notable successes are ‘’Boy Playing The Guitar’’ (a very decent pop-rock ballad that will definitely exceed your expectations) and ‘’Sex Drugs Internet’’.

The band is known for their spectacular onstage performances, including peculiar mise-en-scene, as well as flamboyantly designed costumes (not even close to the early Lady Gaga, but still).

New Pants didn’t tour much throughout their career. However, they performed a short UK tour in 2006 and performed at Coachella in 2011, making their grandiose debut in the US. All of their lyrics are in a Chinese dialect, so I have no idea what they are singing about.

From research, the band’s lyrics are denouncing the low living standard, modern and traditional culture clashes, as well as other problems and worries experienced by modern Chinese youth.

This clearly contributed to their growing popularity in the early 2000’s, among

the recent generations of their country.

However, in their latest compositions, New Pants have started writing in English and have adopted a more-or-lesselectro-punk tonality that many of you might find pleasing.

Also, the vocal style of the singer has been switched from sappy-80s-lovesongharmonics to the more abrasive, attention-attracting punk squeal.

Their sound is vaguely influenced by the `80s rock and just a tad by the electro-punk genre (which is basically just angry synth-pop, similar to bands like the Futuristic looking New Pants Faint or Nina Hagen).

One noticeable thing about New Pants is the gradually overwhelming use of acoustic guitar.

The only thing about them that can be considered ‘’punk rock’’ is the moderately heavy riffs occasionally performed by their outstanding female bassist.

This band is recommended for anyone with a thing for cute and sappy ballads, or ‘’punk rock’’ that doesn’t sound punk.

Who knows, maybe their lyrics are a well-masked incitation for anarchy, arson, public aggravation.... Go judge for yourself and give New Pants a listen.

Interrogative Art KAITLIN FITZGIBBON ARTS AND CULTURE EDITOR Krzysztof Wodiczko is a polish artist known for his large video projections on architecture and monuments all over the world.

This type of art is typically called Interrogative Design as it combines art and technology.

Born in Warsaw, he moved to Canada in 1977 and then moved to New York City where he currently resides, as well as Boston and his hometown.

In 1998 the artist won the Hiroshima Art Prize for his artistic contribution to world peace.

He has also won three different awards for his contribution to Polish culture.

He is a Professor of Art, Design and Public Domain at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

As you can tell, he is a pretty busy and fabulous man internationally.

Wodiczko’s work usually depicts social commentary using the themes of war,

trauma, conflict, communication, domestic violence and immigration.

He has completed more than 80 of these projections in Australia, Austria, England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, and Canada and is currently in Montreal!

Until November 23rd, Homeless Projection: Place Des Arts will cover the outside surface of Theatre Maisonneuve.

This work allows homeless people from the downtown core of Montreal to share their stories and express their fears and goals.

Wodiczko has been working really closely to St Micheal’s Mission and other organizations for the homeless.

He would like to make this a possible place for people of the streets to share their experiences.

His goal is to help the homeless regain a voice in the public.

His book Intstuments, Projections and Vehicles explores this idea further.

On October 8th, there was a conference held at the PHI Center where Krzysztof Wodiczko spoke about the different themes and ideology of his work.

This large scale project is part of La Biennale Montreal, an event lasting until the end of November to expose multiple contemporary exhibitions.

Some of his other work has been very controversial over the years.

He has projected a large figure on the surface of the Martin Luther King Church, he has projected figures of war on architecture around the world after several wars.

His pieces are really interesting and sometimes shocking, but extremely wellplanned.

Misconceptions of feminism today KYLEE ROSS CONTRIBUTOR

When we hear about a young self-proclaimed feminist a lot of people roll their eyes at the image of a bra burning, man hating, self-empowered girl.

Believe it or not a lot of young women understand better than others that being a feminist can be as simple as the definition.

The most basic definition of feminism is political, social and economic equality of genders. Equality for all isn’t too difficult of a concept for young women to grasp if you ask me.

Apart from assuming young people don’t know all there is to know about feminism, the reason feminism in young women isn’t always taken seriously is because of the misconceptions about feminists.

Only women are feminists Men are feminists too even without knowing it. An ideology that promotes gender equality obviously wouldn’t limit itself to one gender. Gender equality affects men positively too. Just as women should be able to do anything men can do, men should be able to do anything women can

do. To find out if you are a feminist all you have to do is ask yourself one question. Do you believe in equal rights and opportunities for men and women around the world? If you answer yes, I’m here to tell you, you’re a feminist.

Feminists aren’t feminine The feminist movement brought forth the idea of empowering personal choices.

Women and men can choose to be as feminine or as masculine as they want in this

day and age. What a woman wears or what she likes doesn’t absolutely define her.

Feminists killed chivalry Chivalry isn’t dead, it’s just morphed to fit men and women alike. Standing up when a woman sits down or leaves a table might be out dated but holding the door open for someone is chivalry. Opening doors happens every day. I’ve seen men hold doors opened for women and women hold doors open for men. Why can’t it go

both ways? An act of kindness doesn’t have to have gender roles. Same goes for the awkward dilemma of who picks up the check at a restaurant. Do the check dance, playfully pass it back and forth. Ladies, wanting real equality should be a reason to revive chivalry and be chivalrous to men.

There’s no need for modern day feminism There are so many interpretations of

Minaj identifies as a feminist and is known to often broach the subject of female empowerment. Unfortunately, her message has often been lost or misinterpreted due to her tendency to get caught up in showing how well she can move her ass rather than what she’s using her ass to try and say.

Sadly, Anaconda is no different and through the hell fires of controversy that followed the music video’s release, Minaj was criticized for furthering the objectification of women and degrading the “skinny” woman.

A popular topic of debate in the world of women’s rights, especially amidst a social culture riddled with grinding, licking

and gyrating, is to what extent a woman using her sexuality for the entertainment of men remains a self respecting woman.

No one, not even the most learned feminists can agree on whether using your body in a sexual way that is intended for a male gaze should be considered an act of radical sexual empowerment or shameful relinquishment to your own objectification. Anaconda is a pornographic music video and is unarguably intended for a male audience. If this is true, then this takes away from any notes of female appropriation and independence it could contain.

In Anaconda, the several times Nicki Minaj repeats “Fuck those skinny bitches,” completely negates the message she could have passed the song off as trying to send.

Her potentially body-positive song is made insignificant by her grave error in repeating the exhausted misunderstanding that

“Real women have curves.” There are many skinny girls that were not blessed with a great tush or the finances to buy one (Ahem, Nicki), and dismissing them as less than women is committing the same offense that society does to curvaceous women when they are told that their bodies don’t fit the ideal.

In fact, in her lyrics, Minaj isn’t even supporting larger women, but is perpetuating that women should only be big in certain areas. Replacing a ridiculous expectation of what a woman should look like with another ridiculous expectation is hypocritical and counterproductive.

As part of a generation that seems to be obsessed with women’s bodies (particularly their behinds), it’s hard to define the line between the objectification and hyper sexualization of women and the independent, sex positive reclamation of women by women.

One being the perception that women just simply can’t have it all have and are forced to choose between a career and a family. There’s still a massive pay gap between the salaries of men and women and there is always subconsciously a greater emphasis on a woman’s appearance in society.

The most important thing for young feminists to consider right now is not to feel ashamed of their beliefs because of the nasty misconceptions that seem to go hand in hand with the title.

There are always going to be women who go further than others and that’s okay.

To some extent all women pick and choose what aspects of feminism they want to embrace and what they don’t.

In reality when you get down to the bottom of it that’s what the feminist movement was all about. It gave women their own choices.

A different kind of feminism: Minaj TALYA CYR CONTRIBUTOR

Nicki Minaj’s feminism, if it can be called that, isn’t about your comfort, as is apparent in the music video for her latest song “Anaconda,” which was released this past month.

The video for Anaconda features a mostly naked Nicki Minaj surrounded by several other beautiful mostly naked women dancing and rubbing themselves against an assortment of things (bamboo banisters, exotic fruits, each other!)

In the chart-topping song, the self-proclaimed “Nasty Bitch” uses a sample from Sir Mix-a-Lot’s timeless classic “I Like Big Butts” to re-appropriate her own, as well as all women’s asses.

On one hand, Minaj deserves all the respect for re-appropriating a subject of music (women’s asses), which has been a male dominated theme since, well, forever.

However, as we have learned from this video, no one is that interested in pondering the intention of such an overtly sexual display when they can sit back and enjoy it instead.

Furthermore, trying to instill confidence and pride in your body by putting down other women’s bodies undermines serious and continued efforts in eradicating superficial competition amongst women.

Perhaps what Nicki needs is to reconsider her feminism?

Maybe we don’t just need women shaking their asses on their own terms and instead, we should start working towards a society that stops measuring a woman’s value in the quality of her ass.

Rant of the week: group projects ALYSSIA RUBERTUCCI VOICES EDITOR

As a student who likes being completely in control of her grades, I’m defeated when I’m forced to partake in a group project. It just isn’t for me.

I can’t help but become worried when being subjected to other people influencing a large portion of my grade. This mentality has nothing to do with the individuals I’m working with, I have the utmost respect for them, and a lot of them are even my friends. It’s just that I’m somewhat of a control freak.

I don’t have a problem with interacting in groups for small activities, but when it comes to a project worth 20%, I’m a little uneasy.

If I’m in a class with people I’m familiar with, I don’t feel so bad if a group project comes up. At least then I have an idea of what kind of workers they are and whether or not they’re reliable.

I just go into complete panic mode when I read a course outline stating that there will be a group project in a class where I don’t know anyone. I suddenly think to myself, “Oh God, what am I in for?”

It’s as if selecting members of my group becomes tactical. For my own sanity, I need to know that I’m working with a solid group of individuals.

In the past, generally, the people that I’ve worked with have been pleasant. The problem is, those few instances when I didn’t have such a great experience. That will always stick with me when I hear about group projects, it’s like a bad after taste.

chosen for you, it’s always a gamble. You never know for sure how your peers are until you’ve started working, and by then, it’s too late.

What drives me crazy, and I’m sure it’s not just me, is the students who are just completely incompetent, adding the slightest of the slightest to a big group project.

They either don’t answer MIOs, they don’t do the tasks assigned to them necessary for the completion of the project, some don’t even show up for the presentation, and the list goes on. It takes a special group of people who will go beyond the annoyances I’ve just mentioned, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I came across one

of them.

What irritates me even more is that these students will coast by throughout the whole project and will still wind up with the same grade as you. How is that fair?

Our teachers need to do something to reform our evaluation for group projects.

In fact, if group projects weighing heavily on our final grade can just be dismissed, cancelled out, completely terminated, then that would be even better! (As if that would ever happen).

This is something we all need to accept because these situations will follow us for the rest of our lives.

So if you find yourself in a group with me, be warned – I’m smiling, I’m friendly, but I’m hating it.

Word of advice: work with me and I’ll be happy to work with you.

Food for thought Turkey is nice, awsome even. Both the country and the animal. But especially the animal. Don’t you drool when you think of that white, not chewy, not fatty and umami goodness melting in your mouth? I do too. Turkey is definitely one of the best meat products out there, believe the crazy obssessive meat-eater that I am (nicknamed the “Starving Lion” by her mom).

If you rarely eat turkey, you probabky consume this meat on Thanksgiving. I personally do not like my meat mixed with other substances, but most people find it too dry, hence the liking of stuffed turkey.

Anyway, most of the time, you are left with too much turkey. You end up giving some to your guests, and putting the rest in the fridge, forgetting about it until you have to throw it. Well, first, that’s waste and a sin;

therfore, you are going to hell. Second, it is much better if you enjoyed this very good meat that you most likely had to either cook, stuff, cut or prepare the table for rather than a bunch of foul-smelling bacteria and earthworms. Third, you are missing a lot. There is so much you can do with turkey. Examples : 1) Sandwiches Yes. Obvious, ain’t it ? Use the leftovers as your lunch. Not everyday of course, but eat a bit more turkey than you are used to for the rest of October. Or are you of the “I buy my food” kind ? Well, you shoudn’t be; nothing is better than homemade food.

2)Rolls That is what I do with ALL my meat

eftovers. Yep, rolls. With turkey, I suggest shredding it until you are left with filamentous strips, mix it with a creamy substance, bet it cream cheese, humus or even mayonnaise if you can handle it. Do not use rice paper for those rolls, since you should make a lot of them and keep them in the freezer. Use edible paper made of wheat flour, it will keep it’s properties longer. Also, you can cook your rolls in the oven instead of frying them, and make thumb-sized rolls that can be eaten with tea.

3) Creme de volaille Yeah, you know cream of chicken, but have you ever tried replacing the latter by turkey or duck ? It’s delicious. You can even mix the different kinds of meat.

Young adults from all around the world come to the 514 to get a first hand experience of the Montreal lifestyle.

Not only known for its exceptionally varied education system, Montreal also provides one of the most unique and beautiful living experiences a city can offer. Seasons vary from a gorgeous colorful autumn feel filled with cozy sweaters and fall football (for guys) pumpkin spice lattés (for the ladies) to the -25 winters that we dread but must tough out every year.

It may be hard to find the beauty in winter when your extremities are no longer functioning but without snow Montreal would not be complete.

Thankfully, we have some outdoor rinks and Tim Horton’s to help the time pass and to maybe make a couple new buddies.

That brings up maybe the most important part of our city, Les Canadiens de Montréal. Once October comes, the city enters a new mindset where hockey comes first and it’s all about the drive for 25! Some would even argue that the Habs are a religion here in Montreal, and, for devout fans, the Habs are "God." Feel free to go to the Bell Centre for a game whether in the nosebleeds or up close and personal, the atmosphere with the bleu, blanc et rouge is like no other.

up that appetite. On Sundays, sit back, relax and enjoy what we like to call: Tam Tams... Look it up if interested, it'll give you a new perspective on Montreal, to say the least. Dawson College, home to approximately 10,000 students, has an array of sports available to its large student body.

Alex Caro, a 3rd year Commerce student, was keen on joining one of these sports teams. Of the numerous sports offered, one sport in particular seemed to have piqued his interest. Alex joined Dawson’s basketball team two years ago. The following interview was conducted with Mr. Caro earlier this week at Dawson College.

How did you get into the sport of basketball?

Alex Caro: I would always compete with my brothers to become as good as them, so that’s basically how I got into it.

My two older brothers have been playing basketball since a young age as well, so naturally my dad put me into the sport too.

What made you choose basketball over the plethora of sports available, such as hockey or soccer?

AC: I’ve been playing basketball my whole life because of my brothers and my dad, so that’s basically the reason.

Who inspired you to to start playing basketball?

AC: My favourite basketball player was always Allen Iverson when I was young. I

AC: I think that we have what it takes to win it all. There is some good competition, as previously mentioned, such as Vanier and Champlain, but if we practice and work hard enough, we can definitely beat them.

How often do you practice per week?

Is basketball just a hobby or do you plan on making a career out of it?

AC: I’m planning on playing at the university level. I don’t think making it to the NBA would be realistic at this point, as height is a huge factor and I am not too tall, as the average height in the NBA is 6’6”.

With the 2013-14 hockey season just underway, it is time to take a closer look at the early favorites for personal hardware come June. While certain awards feature perennial contenders every year, for others, we may have new candidates emerging this coming season. Here is a breakdown of this year’s award contenders:

Vezina Trophy Winner (Best Goaltender): Henrik Lundqvist, Rangers Finalists: Carey Price, Canadiens and Tuukka Rask, Bruins

Hart Trophy Winner (League MVP): Sidney Crosby, Penguins Finalists: Steven Stamkos, Lightning and Tyler Seguin, Stars Sidney Crosby seems to be the recurring favorite for the Hart trophy every year. He has already won 2 Hart trophies, including his most recent last season, when he scored 104 points. Crosby can be counted on to play a bunch of minutes and anchor a Penguins power-play unit that will feature the likes of Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz, Kris Letang and Christian Ehrhoff.

You can expect Sid to rack up another 100 + point season and finish at the top of the Hart trophy ballot come the end of it.

could potentially score 50 goals once again. Tyler Seguin is also expected to build off a breakout season last year with Dallas and should continue to form a deadly duo with Jamie Benn up front.

However, this is Crosby’s trophy to lose.

Norris Trophy Winner (Best defenseman): PK Subban, Canadiens

Finalists: Drew Doughty, Kings and Shea Weber, Predators P.K. Subban just signed a lucrative 8year contract that will pay him $72 million. This season, he will prove that he is worth every penny. The flashy and exuberant Subban racked up 53 points last year and is already showcasing his talent

Finalists: John Gibson, Ducks and Aaron Ekblad, Panthers Drouin will surely benefit from that extra year in junior and put up great offensive numbers. Drouin dominated the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last year and is expected to play top line minutes, riding shotgun alongside Steven Stamkos. An early injury may sideline the youngster for a little while, but should not affect his chances at claiming the trophy.

Gibson had a coming-out party in the playoffs last year and should be given the keys to the Ducks' starting goaltender job.

Ekblad will be given every opportunity to shine on Florida’s blue line. However, none will surpass the offensive impact that a healthy Drouin will have on his team.

Henrik Lundqvist is not known as the “king” for nothing. He consistently plays lights-out in goal and steals his fair share of games in net. He is coming off of last year's Stanley Cup Final appearance and is a perennial 30 game winner in the League. With Ryan McDonagh playing sound defense in front of him, expect Lundqvist’s stats to improve. Carey Price is gaining more confidence and his play is benefitting as a result. Rask plays for a sound and good defensive team, but it will be the king that reigns supreme this year.

Calder Trophy Winner: (Rookie of the Year): Jonathan Drouin, Lightning
