NEW NECK OF THE WOODS: PITT ALUM ASSUMES GOV. POSITION Katie Sottile

For The Pitt News Don’t give up on saving the environment — there’s a Pitt grad fighting to protect it.

Laura Watson, a North Hills native and 1995 Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences alumna, was appointed director of ecology for the state of Washington in December. She now has a seat in Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee’s executive cabinet, where she oversees a staff of 1,700 people among 10 different environmental programs.

Watson has been adjusting to her new role since taking office at the beginning of January.

She attributes some of her success to her previous experiences, including her time at Pitt.

“I’ve only been on the job for two weeks, so I’m still pinching myself a little bit,” she said. “I feel like I got really good grounding to be able to grow into this position while I was at the University of Pittsburgh, but I really didn’t envision myself in a position like this.

It’s really gratifying and a little humbling to be here.”

Due to the recent nature of her appoint-

ment, Watson declined to further comment on the responsibilities involved in her new role. But she was more than eager to talk about how she got there, she said.

For a while, attending Pitt seemed unlikely to Watson. She knew she wanted a school with an urban environment, but thought she wanted to venture beyond her hometown.

“I really wanted a city campus, and so I was looking at various schools that had city campuses,” Watson said. “My mom said, ‘Well why don’t you look at the University of Pittsburgh?’ And I thought maybe I wanted to go a little further away. But then when I went to the University of Pittsburgh and did a tour, I just fell in love. It was exactly the kind of city campus I wanted.”

Watson began school at Pitt and quickly assimilated to her new academic life. She was considering law school after college, so she pursued a philosophy major.

“The philosophy program in general had really good faculty. I benefited from having a lot of small seminars and classes, so I got to know the faculty well,” Watson said. “It was a

really enjoyable learning experience to have those small classes with exciting discussions.”

In addition to philosophy, Watson had a vested interest in social justice. She earned a certificate in women’s studies, and as a requirement, she completed an internship at a Pittsburgh homeless shelter for women.

Upon graduating from Pitt, Watson moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington’s School of Law. She spent her summers working in the office of the Washington state attorney general. Once she graduated from law school, she took a full-time job within the attorney general’s environmental law division.

Watson worked as an attorney for 21 years, where she prosecuted a variety of cases related to climate change, air and water quality and hazardous waste. She also served as the primary lawyer on litigation against the Trump administration’s environmental rollbacks.

While her professional life is heavily influenced by environmental science, Watson cites her women’s studies certificate as having a profound impact on her career trajectory.

“When I was in college, I wasn’t entirely

sure what I wanted to do,” Watson said. “I thought it would probably be law, and having that experience through the internship program at the University of Pittsburgh cemented my desires to work on social justice issues.”

Dr. Frayda Cohen, a professor and advisor for Pitt’s Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies department, works closely with students and local organizations to coordinate internships. She emphasizes the versatility of social justice-related education.

“Our students pursue a wide range of graduate programs and careers. We’ve had many students go to law school, psychology, social work and all of the medical fields,” said Cohen. “Increasingly, graduate schools recognize that diversity training is essential to their success because they may be working on issues of equity and LGBTQ health.”

Watson, pg. 2 agrees that internships can provide students with pre-professional experience, but maintains that they are not necessary for acceptance to law school.

“Applying to law school is unique in that internships are not vital to being competitive in the application process. In fact, law schools don’t require internships or even any specific outside-of-the-classroom experience,” Yingling said.

Rather than focus on gaining law-specific internships, Yingling recommends students pursue opportunities related to their major.

“I encourage most students who really want an internship to start in the field of their major. My guess is they chose the major because they enjoy the subject matter. Why not also enjoy the internship?” said Yingling.

It is young people who are going to grow into the future positions of power, Watson said. As for Pitt students who are looking to get involved with environmental protection, she has some simple advice — vote.

“Thank goodness for the youth movement and all the attention that they are bringing to climate change,” Watson said.

BELLEFIELD BOILER: A 113-YEAR-OLD ‘CLOUD FACTORY’ Amanda Zelnis

For The Pitt News The Bellefield Boiler Plant has pumped out a steady flow of cloud-like exhaust from a tall stack tucked behind the Carnegie Library for 113 years.

This little-known “Cloud Factory,” as Pitt alumnus Michael Chabon nicknames it in his 1988 novel “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh,” generates steam to heat most of the major buildings in Oakland.

The Bellefield Boiler Plant, tucked in a valley on Boundary Street below a Schenley Drive bridge, was built in 1907. The building provides heat for Pitt, Carnegie Mellon University, the Carnegie Museums and Library, Phipps Conservatory and UPMC’s Oakland-based hospitals.

Greg Paulowski, an engineer who has worked at the plant for 27 years, explained that when you get into the nitty-gritty detail of the steam generation process, it can appear somewhat complicated. But he said the process, which generates upwards of 400,000 pounds of steam per hour, is actu-

ally quite simple when you break it down.

“You take City water, put it into a pressurized vessel and heat it up. It becomes steam and is forced through piping,” Paulowski said. “The hot steam can be used for heating or power generation. Then, hopefully, you capture and reuse all your components — mainly water and some chemicals.”

The plant, housed in a large building designed by the same architects who designed the Carnegie Library, contains six boilers that run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and emits exhaust from one large smokestack.

Bellefield currently utilizes natural gas, provided by Dominion Energy and transported by Peoples Gas, as fuel for the combustion that heats the water into steam. But from 1907 to 2009, the plant used coal as fuel for combustion, which Paulowski said was “very labor intensive.”

“It was dumped out of train cars and onto a conveyor,” Paulowski said. “There were guys who had to make sure it didn’t get stuck, they had to shovel the coals that fell

and didn’t hit [the collection bin] perfectly.”

Paulowski added that during the winter, the coal cars froze over, requiring manual labor to unload them.

“The guys had steam guns and used them inside the cars,” Paulowski said. “It was very physical and dangerous.”

Although Bellefield had plans already in place, the switch from coal to natural gas was spurred by a February 2009 consent order issued by the Allegheny County Health Department. The transition aimed to reduce the amount of carbon, sulfur dioxide and particulate emissions.

Nowadays, Bellefield’s employees pride themselves on following regulations and staying within pollution limits.

“We are very cautious and very safe. We have a safety committee. We have an intense reporting system, and if we ever violate or pollute they would know it,” Paulowski said.

“We can’t cover up anything — it is all data produced on a computer.”

Around the same time of the fuel switch, Pitt built the Carrillo Steam Plant on upper

campus behind Trees Hall. Carrillo, from its inception, has always used natural gas as fuel.

Paulowski said the second plant was needed due to Pitt’s expansion over the years, and the resulting higher demand for steam in Oakland.

Rick Testa, the Bellefield plant’s foreman, said the plant’s energy efficiency is one of the many reasons it will stay operational for years to come.

“You don’t have to pump the steam uphill, the pressure carries it all the way up,” Testa said. “It is also a low maintenance production since the plant switched to natural gas.”

The plant is more than just a building with machinery that produces steam — it also has a rich history in Oakland. Jason Dignon, the pump man at Bellefield, said he is especially intrigued by this history.

“I like history, so I am fascinated by the generations of engineers that have come before us — hundreds of guys have considSee Boiler on page 5

Boiler, pg. 4 ered this their home way back when,” Dignon said. “As much as Oakland changes, the one constant landmark here, I think, is Bellefield.”

Dignon said one of his favorite pieces of history at the plant is built directly into its structure.

“We have a giant piece of steel here in the building that is stamped with Carnegie,” Dignon said. “That steel predates U.S. Steel.”

Some passersby on the Schenley Bridge towering over Boundary Street may stop to admire the creation of clouds from the historic Bellefield Boiler Plant. But to many Oakland residents, the plant will likely remain unappreciated because it is hidden from view.

Dignon said the plant is so little known that he gets some strange looks when he tells people what he does.

“I never really met anyone that knew the plant was here,” Dignon said, “When I try to describe what I do and where I do it, no one has any idea. It’s like the hidden gem of Oakland.”

REPORTING ON THE OSCARS

Anthony Breznican knows his way around the Academy Awards red carpet.

In between A-list actors and producers, Breznican weaves around looking not for his next award — but his next big scoop.

Breznican, a 1998 Pitt graduate and former Pitt News editor-in-chief who currently writes for Vanity Fair is one of countless reporters who attend award shows for work. Though plenty of reporting happens before the event, once nominees have been announced, reporters have to rush to cover the winners.

Breznican said reporters covering the Oscars can use a couple of different strategies.

“When a reporter is on the Oscar beat, there’s a couple of different ways you can do it. One is to cover it as a horse race like, who’s up, who’s down, what’s the reaction to this movie amongst the people who are voting for the awards,” Breznican said. “I’m much more interested in writing about the films that count as the best pictures of the year. What’s interesting about them, what stories can be told about them that are compelling?”

Such stories can be on a variety of topics, such as the recent trend of men not wanting to see “Little Women,” which Breznican reported on. Breznican said he’s glad he had the opportunity to bring attention to the

disparity by talking to people who were arguing in favor of men seeing the film.

“The distributors of the film were having a very hard time getting men to come see the movie. They just were not coming to screenings, they were not apparently compelled by it, and so I was very proud of a story we did talking to some of the people who were advocating on its behalf,” Breznican said.

Breznican prefers these kinds of stories as opposed to simply measuring voter reactions because they can add variety to the discussions around nominees, as do stories about films that weren’t nominated. Just because a film doesn’t get an award doesn’t mean it’s not worth seeing, and Breznican said he believes it’s important to talk about films that are snubbed to highlight good performers who weren’t recognized.

“We do have an impact on the films that people choose to see both as moviegoers and as voters. Then once the nominations come out, you just have to address the snubs. Our first story on nominations morning was ‘Here are people who were left out,’” Breznican said. “And I think that sometimes the absence, writing about the negative space, can shine a light on these films and some of those performers and artists.”

FROM ONE STAGE TO THE NEXT: TRAVELING ACTORS AT PITT Beatrice McDermott For The Pitt News

Margaret Pryor estimates that she performed at least 320 productions of “Damn Yankees” and “Grease” in the span of two years in the late ’90s. But it wasn’t just the amount of shows that made the work hard — having to frequently move cities was also pretty exhausting.

The acting industry is competitive, and many actors, including students at Pitt, will choose to abandon traditional job markets like New York and Los Angeles for a more nomadic lifestyle. These travelling performers can pursue a wide array of careers — acting in off-Broadway plays with touring companies or flying across the country to fill roles. Often, the actors end up working seven days a week, putting on shows for cities across the nation.

Pryor, an MFA student in Pitt’s theater department, auditioned for the role of Gloria in the 1997 National Tour of “Damn Yankees” after graduating with her bachelor’s from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. One year later, she decided to continue her career as a travelling performer by auditioning for the role of Marty in “Grease.”

“It’s awesome, especially as a young actor. It’s a great way to see much of the country and Canada,” Pryor said. “But it’s really hard because you’re living out

of your suitcase for a long period of time.

You’re living with the same people, in the same hotel. It gets very old very fast. At certain points it gets tiring.”

Pryor said one of the most crucial traits an actor can have is flexibility. Accidents and mistakes are inevitable, so it’s important to be able to adapt to unexpected situations. One time, she said, an electrical generator went out before a production of “Grease” and the actors had to quickly improvise a way to perform without their equipment.

“We were able to do a concert version of the show. We were up on the stage with microphones,” she said. “It’s live so things happen. You really have to go with the flow.”

Sean Cook, also a Pitt MFA performance pedagogy student, also has experience as a travelling performer. Cook has worked as a regional actor in the film, television and commercials industry for over 11 years. He said he started his career in Los Angeles after graduating from Western Washington University in 2011, but had difficulty breaking into such a competitive job market, and decided to move.

“I realized very quickly outside of my undergraduate training that there’s no way to make a living as a stage actor. I moved into the Seattle market, and See Traveling on page 9

“In my experience, at least, getting your foot in the door so that anybody at somewhere you want to work knows your name and is familiar with you, that’s the whole key,” Coyle said.

Coverage for the Oscars starts long before the actual nominees are announced, with reviews of films that are released both widely and in film festivals. Coyle said they try to cover most of the potential nominees when they’re released.

“Most of these movies we’ve covered from when they first came out, either or both in reviews and features,” Coyle said.

“As we’re nearing the show, we love to do features on movies or nominees that we haven’t done stories on already.”

Coyle worked on a story taking a similar approach on Best Documentary nominee “The Cave,” whose director, Feras Fayyad, is Syrian and had trouble securing a visa to come to the ceremony.

“I prioritize stories that highlight either diverse nominees or diverse stories, which are sadly lacking this year.” Mason said via email. “The most important thing for me to get across is how the Oscars tend to maintain rather than subvert oppressive systems.”

On the night of the award shows themselves, Breznican said there are many places for reporters to be. First, there’s the red carpet. There’s very limited time to ask questions, and there’s a lot of chaos as people move through. Breznican said covering the red carpet can be like playing volleyball.

“You are setting up the ball and hoping that your interview subject will spike it down and score a point,” Breznican said. “I was trying to ask one or two questions that would get a fun or colorful answer from people.”

Breznican explained that while some of the reporters on the red carpet are specifically covering fashion, others are looking for a story that can only be found coming directly from award winners. When they have one, they rush back to call their editor to get the story written.

Then there are people who cover from the press room, Breznican said, which is also referred to as “backstage.” This is where the winners come after receiving their awards. Reporters can ask questions more directly than on the red carpet, and they can ask about things that happened onstage. Breznican said sometimes tough moments can happen offstage, such as when Michael Moore protested the Iraq War and was booed off the stage during the 2003 awards.

“Him coming backstage was a really important story that had to be written up immediately, so I remember it wasn’t me, but

Shruti Talekar | staff illustrator somebody else asked him, ‘Well why would you say something like that on stage?’ and his answer was, ‘Well I’m American. We have freedom of speech here,’” Breznican said.

Reporters can also be stationed in the wings of the stage, where sets are coming on and off and presenters are waiting to go on. According to Breznican, it’s not a good spot for interviews, so reporters are mostly just observing the goings-on.

“There’s always a lot of interesting drama and interesting little funny moments or emotional moments and you try to be the fly on the wall there,” he said. “It’s a great place to see people, interesting personali-

ties collide and interact, and that’s really what I would try to capture when I covered it back there.”

Acording to Coyle, reporters covering the Oscars and the lead-up to them strive to create a narrative that appeals to a wide audience and goes beyond just being a recitation of the night’s events. Coyle said that it’s not about covering the letter of the event, but painting a picture for the readers at home.

“You’re aiming for more than a list of winners, but something that chronicles the evening and the color of the ceremony and what the main themes were that kind of came out,” Coyle said.

4. I don’t intend to be an entrepreneur, so why bother?

Few of the students who participate in Big Idea Center programs and competitions do so with the expectation of becoming an entrepreneur. Often times the experience is infectious and they do become entrepreneurs.

But most students go on

to work in larger organizations where the skills they learn in programs like the Big Idea Competition help set them apart from their peers because they have had experience in leading and working in teams and in taking an idea from a fuzzy concept and advancing it toward reality.

5. I don’t really need the $25,000 top prize, or one of the other 12 amazing cash prizes.

Just kidding.

When musicals and plays go on tour, the productions are just as involved as if they were seen right on Broadway. This means the performers have to apply the same effort as a Broadway actor — while also finding transportation to unfamiliar cities, dealing with faulty equipment and adapting to different stage setups.

Pryor also said touring companies need actors who are prepared for anything, so their auditions are designed to select the most talented, capable individuals. Trying out for the role of a touring performer, she said, requires an even more intense amount of energy and dedication than a traditional stage production.

“You audition, and that’s a process in and of itself. There are lots of people auditioning. Usually after an audition you’re called back. There can be up to three callbacks for a job. Each time you

go back they’re giving you actual material from the show. Sometimes they pair you up with other people to see who they like best. If they want you they offer you the job,” Pryor said.

For Cook, one of the hardest parts of working as a travelling performer is arranging his own transportation. Applying for jobs across the country can create more opportunities for actors, but it also requires more money up front. Often, he said, he had to provide his own funding for cross-country travel.

“If I, say, booked a job in L.A., they would hire me on the stipulation that I would take care of my own transportation. There is a give and take in working as a regional actor, or working in smaller regions. It costs more to do the work — more time, more stress, more money. It offers a lot of challenges,” Cook said.

On the other hand, actors in the film, television and commercials industry have a better shot at achieving commercial success than stage actors, according to Cook. Performing on-screen, rather than onstage, gives actors the chance to appeal to a wider audience. Even though it costs more money to enter the film,

television and commercials industry, the rewards are usually faster and more profitable.

Cook attributes much of his success to the Pitt MFA in performance pedagogy program. The two year program, offered by the Pitt theater department, is “designed to equip working, professional actors with the tools to expand their employment opportunities in teaching at the college and university level,” according to the department website. Cook said the MFA program helps prepare students for a competitive job market by giving students a taste of an industry that Cook says is pushing actors to have more and more technical knowledge.

“The MFA programs at Pitt offer something that only three other universities in the country offer. Students get to work with people with real experience in the industry,” Cook said.

Jahir Christian, a senior theater major, also said the MFA pedagogy program has been a fundamental part of his learning at Pitt. He said the guidance of MFA graduate students, like Cook and Pryor, were a great contributor to his

success in the regional Pittsburgh theater scene — whether by helping format a resumé, work on audition material or help navigate office politics in the world of local theater.

“I’ve noticed that the MFA students are the only real ‘in’ to not only our industry, but they are some of the only liaisons we have to the faculty,” he said.

“The graduate students are the ones that give us the information we need to perform our daily functions.”

Cook reaffirmed Christian’s statement that this extra support is vital for undergraduate students, especially for those unfamiliar with the changes occurring in the performance industry.

Cook’s advice to younger students interested in acting is to follow their gut — though he suggests starting off in regional markets, which are more tolerant of beginners.

“If you feel an impulse to go to a major market, like N.Y., Chicago, L.A., and you can set yourself up in a way that makes you feel secure, then you should do it. If you’re not ready for that, there’s much to be learned in a smaller market,” Cook said.

GET THE ‘USELESS’ FINE ARTS DEGREE

Opinions Editor Once I told someone I wanted to get a master’s of fine arts in creative writing and they told me it was the second-to-worst post-graduation plan they’d ever heard from a student. I didn’t ask what the first was, but I can only imagine.

Arts degrees — especially fine arts degrees, which usually come in the form of music, studio art,

creative writing and theater — have been labeled as useless over the years. Search “useless degrees” on the internet and you’ll find, on just about every homemade ranking, that it’s quite literally just a list of liberal and fine arts degrees.

But I think the word “useless” is a lazy use of language. Everyone’s idea of what useless means is different, and regardless, it’s not possible to define whether or not a degree is “useful” based upon the

number of jobs available and the number of people employed directly in the field. People have different life paths and different ways of using a degree. But this doesn’t make it useless.

It’s true that for the most part, STEM degrees lead to higher paying jobs than liberal and fine arts degrees, and it’s understandable why young people care about a higher starting salary and financial security. Student loan debt is playing a role in the

physical and mental stress of young people — the debt, which, as of 2019, averages at about $31,000 total, and $400 in monthly payment per college graduate. In 1980, for reference, the average debt per graduating student was $9,320. But each year, the average debt increases at a higher rate. In 2010, the average debt was almost $10,000 less than it is now — $29,900.

And while STEM majors usually have starting salaries that are $20,000 higher than those of liberal arts majors, by the time people reach the age of 40, the salaries between those who majored in the liberal arts and those who majored in STEM are virtually the same. For example, women who are applied STEM majors earned nearly 50% more than social science and history majors at ages 23-25, but only 10% more by ages 38-40, a New York Times analysis reported. So even in terms of salary, which doesn’t solely determine whether or not a degree is useful, liberal arts degrees aren’t all that far behind STEM. It seems too that since we’re going to have to work longer than the generation preceding us, it’s more important than ever that we actually like and See Mensch on page 11

Mensch, pg. 10 care about what we’re doing. The retirement age in the United States is steadily rising, the age in which the U.S. government allows retirees to receive full social security benefits has risen from 65 to 67.

This is all to say that we’re going to be in our career fields for a very long time, and pursuing something enjoyable, or else a passion, is continuously found to be a key factor in maintaining healthy relationships, mental health, physical health and energy. In other words, not useless.

And just because someone’s primary job isn’t in their field of study — a writer who teaches high school for example, or a playwright who primarily does work editing — doesn’t render the degree useless. It just means that their way of finding a stable income is different. The same goes for artists who have to work multiple jobs to support themselves.

This isn’t to say that going to art school is going to provide the same financial stability that an engineering degree will. But this is to say that just because art doesn’t provide the same financial stability doesn’t mean that a degree in art is useless. It just means that the artist might have to find other means of supporting themself and their artistry.

It might be copy editing or it might be tutoring.

It might be serving food at a restaurant, working

retail or bartending.

Art is a method of communication. It allows people from different backgrounds, from different walks of life to communicate with each other.

In a world where borders and division seem to be all over the place, we need art more than ever. We need liberal arts majors. And more than anything, we need to be able to pursue what we love with confidence, and we need to not get caught up in the “usefulness” of what we love.

The only kind of useless degree is a degree earned that has no impact on the graduate who earned it. Which is to say, the graduate doesn’t think of their art or work, and it doesn’t influence their life in any way, shape or form. And that’s rare, especially if the degree earner is passionate about their subject, which, in terms of art, is often the case.

So I am going to graduate school, and I am going to graduate school for writing. I might be paying rent by way of overnight restaurant shifts — there’s so much I’m not sure of. But one thing I am sure of is this — I would rather be a writer and work two jobs to pay the bills than be no writer at all.

PITT CREATIVES LEAD FIGHT IN SPORTS RECRUITING WARS Stephen Thompson

The crowd erupts and the players continue as if the flashing lights and deafening noise around them does not exist.

In that instant before, while the rest of the arena was frozen in anticipation, one basketball staff member was doing his most important work — packed in with other photographers along the baseline, watching the action through his camera.

As assistant director of creative content, Alex Geiger is only one year out of college and already an official full-time member of the Pitt men’s basketball coaching staff.

Geiger is a one-man division — one of many

fighting on a new front of college athletics’ recruiting arms race. High school players can now connect with programs and coaches from thousands of miles away, meaning that in recruiting the next generation of athletes, schools have to find digital media creators who can make their social media as flashy as their stadiums, locker rooms and game day atmospheres.

For many program leaders, like Pitt men’s basketball head coach Jeff Capel, it’s an adjustment to learn new technology and meet players 20 to 30 years his junior halfway — but it’s also necessary to keep pace.

“I was one of these people who didn’t understand social media,” Capel said. “I wasn’t really on it. And I learned about the power of it [at Duke] and the importance of it in what we do … It was all for recruiting. It was all to get young people excited about our program … Not about where we have been or are just coming off, but new, fresh, exciting. Endless possibilities.”

This is where Geiger comes in.

During games, he wanders the arena — from sidelines to seats up to the Pete’s catwalk — to find appealing angles. As the team’s unofficial docu-

mentarian, it’s his job to follow the team during the game’s slim two-hour window of action and capture themes and messages that he and Pitt basketball’s marketing staff collaborate on.

With the access he has, Geiger is able to capture a more authentic view of what life in the Pitt basketball program is like. For now, that means selling the world on the face of the program — Capel himself.

“This year we’ve been focusing on nailing down our brand,” Geiger said. “And a lot of that is focused around who coach Capel is as a person …

Especially now because we’re doing fine, but not winning every game … We don’t have all these insane highlights after every game so it’s challenging.

But [Capel’s] personality has become our brand.”

Because of the infancy of his field, Geiger taught himself through Youtube, driven by a desire to document his adventures during a semester abroad. His predecessor at Pitt, Cody Isern, was also informally trained and one of the first of his kind. After graduating in 2017, he moved to Columbia, Missouri, and took over as content producer for University of Missouri athletics. There, he was the only employee in his department,

meaning he had to create content for every Tigers athletic team.

His days at Mizzou were marked by harried trips around athletic facilities and long stretches away from home.

“I was kind of the first content creator they had,” Isern said. “Once we got into football season it was fast paced … The overlap with football and basketball was crazy and almost burned me out really quickly … I was maybe at my apartment two or three times a week and the rest I was travelling.”

These days, the formerly skeleton crews that Isern manned at Mizzou have multiplied, especially in football. The long fields, towering stadiums and seemingly endless rosters demand a more heavily populated process.

Recruiters are trying to create an individualized approach, which is difficult with the number of players football programs require. So people like Taylor Wilhelm, director of creative media for Pitt football, have to take relayed info about a player and tailor pieces to their interests.

This practice spans sports. While Geiger may be preparing highlights of a former star Capel has See Recruiting on page 13

Recruiting, pg. 12 coached set to a recruit’s favorite song, Wilhelm may be creating a graphic that promotes a particular academic program or Pitt’s shared practice facility with the Steelers.

“Most of the time it goes by the player to show them a more defined theme,” Wilhelm said. “We want to show how they would be a good fit with our school, our team.”

Wilhelm deals exclusively with static graphics, but Panther Vision, a division of Pitt Athletics, adds another dimension to the story. Max Hahn, the assistant director of broadcast and video production for Pitt football, works with a crew of as many as eight on game days.

Some follow the game action, others the players on the sidelines. Following every football win, Hahn and his team create the Field Pass videos, a cinematic retelling of the game that receives tens of thousands of views when posted.

These videos have underwent a few changes since their inception in 2015. Previously just a high resolution, alternative-angle highlight film, Hahn and his team decided to take on a more holistic retelling of Pitt’s all-too-often agonizingly close wins.

In addition to incorporating the voices of Bill Hillgrove and Pat Bostick from radio broadcasts,

Pitt’s struggles are highlighted. Against UCF this past season, Pitt pulled out a win on a last-second trick play — immediately deemed the Pitt Special — and Pitt’s affinity for late rallies became a focal point of the Field Pass videos.

“This year in the field pass of the UCF game, we have audio of coach [Mark Whipple] calling the Pitt Special,” Hahn said. “There was a line before where one of the receivers said, ‘I’m going to score.’ And we didn’t end up using it, but I knew, ‘Okay, No. 6 Aaron Matthews is going to be involved somehow,’ … Little did I know he would be throwing one.”

Identity became a commodity, a selling point for fans and recruits alike. These pictures, videos and graphics have become a new currency in the marketplace of college recruiting, but it’s an inexact science.

“I struggle with it a lot, because no recruit is going to say they chose a school because they saw a cool video,” Geiger said. “So it’s a subconscious thing. They’re seeing our content, they’re seeing our videos and it reinforces what the coaches are saying to them.”

The future of a program is now linked to its social media accounts. Pitt is trying to channel that power, and according to Capel, with one goal.

“Get Pitt on their mind.”
