Fabrikkanlegget slik det fremsto i sitt første produksjonsår i 1918
The manufacturing plant as it appeared during its first year of operation in 1918
Gustav Jebsen. Høsten samme år diskuterer Farup og Jebsen videre

The establishment of the company Kronos Titan A/S, and the construction of the world’s first plant for the production of titanium pigment on Øra in Fredrikstad, marked the beginning of an «adventure» in transforming black to white, an adventure that thus far has lasted for 100 years. The primary object of the company was the production of a white coloring agent – pigment – based on titanium dioxide, the starting material being titanium ore (ilmenite) from Sokndal in Rogaland County in Norway. The utilized process method was developed entirely by Norwegian chemists and engineers. The production method in question, known as the sulfate process, is still today the prevailing one throughout the titanium dioxide pigment industry of the world. Professor dr. Peder Farup
Titanium dioxide is a component part of a number of everyday industrial products. The most important fields of application include paints, rubber products, plastics, and paper, and furthermore synthetic fibers, glass, and ceramics. Titanium dioxide pigment is even an important constituent of certain pharmaceutical products and articles of food. Two Norwegians, Professor Dr. Peder Farup and Dr. Gustav Jebsen, were to become pivotal in the development of the titanium dioxide pigment. Farup was of the opinion that it must be possible to find new fields of application, in addition to the traditional iron and steel production, for the large ilmenite deposits in the Sokndal area.

METALLET TITAN
METALLIC TITANIUM
Titanium is the ninth most common element in the earth’s crust, with an average TiO2 content of 0.9%. Although widely occurring, titanium is not found in its elementary form in nature in the same way as, for example, gold. Titanium was discovered for the first time in iron sand in Cornwall in 1789. Just a few years later the metal was also detected in the mineral rutile. With a density of less than 5.0 g/cm3, metallic titanium is generally designated as a light metal. As such, it is most commonly known for its use in sports equipment (such as bicycles and golf clubs), in which low weight in combination with high strength are important. Titanium is often called the metal of the space age due to a combination of favorable properties: high strength, light weight as compared to most other metals, and corrosion resistance. No wonder, then, that the aeronautical industry makes use of titanium to a great extent. In addition, «The wonder metal», as titanium often is called, is commonly used in everyday commodity goods such as watches, eye glasses, and computers. However, the production of metallic titanium is a complicated process; consequently, the price is high and the applications limited.

As early as in 1908, Farup had proved it possible to manufacture red, brown and yellow pigments by a process that essentially consisted of iron ore roasting. In 1909, these experiments were continued by the support of Norwegian industrialists, among who were Dr. Sam Eyde and Dr. Gustav Jebsen. During the fall of the same year, Farup and Jebsen further discussed the possibility of producing colored titanium pigments and how to provide the quantities of titanium ore necessary to establish a separate production company. In 1910, the company A/S Norske Titanfarveverk was formed, with Jebsen as CEO, Farup as board member, and Sam Eyde as a member of the supervisory board. Following a technical and commercial investigation of the feasibility of the industrial production of titanium pigments, it was concluded that the only process of interest was the manufacturing of white titanium dioxide pigment, predominantly zinc white and white lead. However, there was no known method as to the production of titanium dioxide at a reasonable cost, and since there was little left of the stock capital, it was decided to liquidate the company in September 1913. Just six months later, in March 1914, the company’s privileges were transferred to the company Det Norske Aktieselskab for Elektrokemisk Industri. Here the gentlemen Jebsen and Farup continued their research on titanium pigment. Even earlier, those two pioneers had started treating the ilmenite with strong sulfuric acid. In the period of 1914–1916, this track led to the Norwegian method for the production of white titanium dioxide pigment. Based on the favorable scientific results, Elektrokemiske in 1916 made plans for the construction of a manufacturing plant for the production of titanium dioxide pigment.

LITT OM TITANIA A/S Aksjeselskapet Titania A/S ble dannet allerede 29. april i 1902.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT TITANIA A/S The company Titania A/S was established as early as April 29, 1902. The installation in Sokndal started up in 1916, and this is where the company in Fredrikstad obtained its raw material ilmenite (iron titanium oxide). The installation was not finished until 1919, and at that point the monthly output was approximately 600 tons of ilmenite concentrate. During the construction period, the installation was bought by Kronos Titan A/S and established as a separate subsidiary comapny. Since Kronos Titan was the only customer in the period up until 1928, the production in the mines had to be adjusted to the changing needs in Fredrikstad. Titania A/S was originally founded in order to secure and develop the values represented by the known ilmenite deposits. In the initial period, no processing technology existed that could convert the ilmenite into a saleable raw material. Not until many years after the establishment, the first batch of ore for commercial delivery was mined. Up until today’s production in the Tellnes area, the ilmenite production technology has gone through a continuous series of development steps. Today, ilmenite concentrate is sold to pigment production plants and processing facilities on the global market. In this way, Titania constitutes the primary link in an extensive international industrial activity.
THE BEGINNING ON ØRA In the period 1880–1920, Norway experienced a significant economic growth. There was a particularly strong development during the first decade following the dissolution of the union with Sweden. At that time the industrial development in the country was characterized by extensive structural changes. The traditional industries were drastically altered, and new economic activities were established. The technification and industrialization – fueled by highly trained people (entrepreneurship) who recognized the great opportunities in the exploitation of Norway’s natural resources – paved the way for those changes. The plans for the commercialization of titanium dioxide pigment were, consequently, introduced at the right point of time. A new production plant that was to provide for the industrial mass production of titanium dioxide, had to be strategically located in the markets. The choice fell on Øra in Fredrikstad. A building site was bought from the municipality of Fredrikstad, in close proximity to the wharf and, therefore, to the European markets. The research on titanium pigment, which for a period had been conducted at a laboratory in Kristiania and, later on, at the research station owned by Elektrokemisk at Lysaker, was soon to be transferred to Fredrikstad and a new pilot plant built on the new construction site. It was of

utmost importance to obtain as close connection as possible between the pilot plant experiments and the production plant that was already under construction. The plant site on Øra measured as much as 56,000 square meters. It bordered on the river Glomma, and the municipal wharf was easily accessible both from the land- and seaside during the ensuing construction period. The greater part of the machines needed in the plant was purchased from the USA, since World War I rendered it impossible to obtain equipment of that kind from Europe. But when the USA entered the war in 1917, difficulties in delivery arose; consequently, most of the equipment was instead purchased from Scandinavia. When the machines and equipment already purchased from the USA arrived, they were placed in storage in case of a possible future production expansion. A complete sulfuric acid installation, also purchased in USA, did not arrive until the fall of 1918. Since it was decided in the meantime to postpone the construction of the sulfuric acid plant, the equipment was placed in storage at the plant site. The demand for sulfuric acid was temporarily met by Lysaker Kemiske Fabrik, which at this point was owned by the company. The sulfuric acid was transported from Lysaker by means of a tank barge and the company’s own towing boat «Kronos».

Her fra utstillingen «Form og farve» i 1924 The plant was marketing its products actively right from the beginning. Here from the exhibition «Form og farve» (Form and color) in 1924
sulfate is extracted from the solution by crystallization and filtering. The iron sulfate is a separate product that is used as a precipitant and a flocculant in municipal wastewater treatment plants, and also finds important use as iron supplement in animal feed. Further on in the process the titanium solution is boiled, whereby titanium hydroxide is precipitated through hydrolysis. The resulting white precipitate is washed in order to remove residual acid and iron sulfate, and is subsequently calcined at temperatures up to 1,000 degrees centigrade in long rotary kilns. During the calcination process, titanium hydroxide is converted into titanium oxide with a pronounced crystalline structure. Titanium oxide is produced in two different crystalline modifications: rutile and anatase. By adjusting the conditions during the precipitation and calcination steps, the process can be controlled in such a way that it produces the desired crystalline modification. Both crystalline modifications have the chemical formula TiO2, and they are both white and used as pigments. The product from the calcination furnace is crushed in a Raymond mill that is equipped with an air separator. The grain size is carefully controlled, and the pigment material must pass through a 16,000 mesh/cm2 screen sieve, resulting in an average pigment grain size of 0,23 micrometer. In the technical literature this process is referred to as the «Norwegian titanium process». The new plant in Fredrikstad was built for an annual production of 2,800 tons of titanium dioxide pigment. This was a totally new branch of industry, and it was accompanied by numerous challenges and start up problems.

THE FIRST PRODUCTS Markedsføring av bedriftens «Skibsmaling» krevde egne annonser. Februar 1921 Marketing of the company’s «Ship paint» required special advertisements. February 1921
Titanium pigment was an unknown product on the market. Consequently, it was crucial to the manufacturing plant to introduce pigments, pastes, and paints of optimal quality in order to get a footing in the competition with white pigments already present on the market. Over the years, continuous improvements have been made and numerous patents registered. The first pigment produced was on the rutile form, and was named Kronos Titan Prima X. The name «Kronos,» which was borrowed from Greek mythology, was registered as a trademark along with the so-called Titan figure. The product had an ivory-white tint, and it was hard and somewhat coarse. But the hiding power, tinting power and refractive index were high and the durability particularly good. However, the slightly greyish-yellow tint did not fare well in competition with the cool white color and fine-grained texture of zinc white. Consequently, the production of Prima was terminated as early as the fall of 1919, after which it was decided to switch to a different pigment type of a considerably higher whiteness, on the anatase form. This product was named Kronos Titanhvitt Extra X. Both the Prima and the Extra grades were free of zinc white and intended partly for the company’s own paint factory and partly as an industrial commodity. The manufacturing of the latter grade was continued until the chemical section of the production plant was shut down in 1929. With that, the first chapter of Titan Co.’s history was closed. The technical importance of that chapter can hardly be overestimated. 33
Kronos Titanhvitt ble de første årene solgt i tønner á 50- og 100 kilo During the first years, Kronos Titanhvitt was sold in barrels of 50 and 100 kg

The pigment product was packed in sturdy wooden barrels, crafted by the plant’s own barrel maker. The larger barrels, weighing 200 kg, were heavy to handle in a time when the technical facilities were few and far between. A rail track was constructed between the warehouse and the wharf, and the employees pushed, by hand, large carts loaded with goods that were to be transported abroad by ship or to the railroad wharf by barge. During the first years of operation, overland transports were done by means of horse and carriage. This was a time-consuming mode of transport, notably due to the long waiting times at the ferry landing, and the cargo was, therefore, to the largest possible extent shipped by sea. The freighter «Trafik» handled all cargo destined for Oslo.
COOPERATION WITH AMERICAN INTERESTS Since 1916 there had been contact between Norwegian and American interests in the titanium business. Representatives of Kronos Titan came into contact with a United States industrial conglomerate, which, through its affiliates, had access to patents and knowledge in the field of titanium dioxide manufacturing. After a period of discussions it was decided to take a closer look at a possible patent cooperation. On July 30, 1920 the time had come to sign agreements with the Americans regarding a close commercial cooperation and the exchange of patents and technical know-how. The market was divided in such a way that

Ingen tvil om at bruken av Titanmaling på Amundsens Maud, ga god profilering for Fredrikstad-bedriften… skonnerten som senere også kom på frimerke sammen med de andre stolthetene Fram og Gjøa The use of Titan paint on Amundsen’s Maud – the schooner that later on was to appear on postage stamps together with the other prides of Amundsen, Fram and Gjøa – undoubtedly meant good publicity for the Fredrikstad company
North America, north of the Panama Canal, was reserved for the Americans, whereas South America was available to both parties. The remaining part of the world was reserved for Kronos Titan.
TITANIUM PAINT FOR ROALD AMUNDSEN In September, 1921 the following could be read in Østfold Dagblad: Roald Amundsen has gratefully accepted an offer from Titan Co., Fredriksstad, of the free shipment of 500 kilos of premixed titanium paint, as he issues the following telegraphic statement to the company: «I have found your titanium paint on the schooner Maud to be perfectly satisfactory in every respect.» The shipment, addressed to Amundsen, has departed for the Universal Shipping and Trading Company, Seattle.
After the agreement with the Norwegians, the Americans adopted the Norwegian method of direct treatment of ilmenite with sulfuric acid. However, the American company, Titanium Pigment Company Inc., did not utilize the Norwegian composition of the titanium solution, but continued using more acidic solutions. Not until later, in the 1930s, when the large-scale production of 100% titanium dioxide pigment started, the Americans adopted the Norwegian principle of the titanium solution composition. When the hiding power of the pigment Extra X turned out to be higher than needed for certain purposes, such as the manufacturing of paints, the production plant in Fredrikstad decided to add precipitated barium sulfate to the titanium solution in parts of the production, in order to bring the titanium dioxide content down to 28% in the final product. The resulting new product was introduced in 1921 as Kronos Titanhvitt Standard X. The whiteness and tinting power of the product were high, it was cheaper than Extra X, and it became very popular. The 1920s were hard times for the Norwegian industry. As for Titan Co., which had been through extensive pioneering works in order to introduce a completely new product on the market, the economic situation became very difficult. As a result, in 1927 the majority of the shares in Titan Co. was bought by the American conglomerate, which had already acquired the majority shareholding in Titanium Pigment Company Inc. In this way, the American company brought together most of the stakeholders within the titanium pigment industry. Other companies had started working on titanium pigments, but at that point they were of no significance.

DE FØRSTE DRIFTSÅRENE
40
THE FIRST YEARS OF OPERATION
41

The production plant in Fredrikstad was built during World War I, and due to price inflation the construction costs by far exceeded the estimates. The titanium pigment production started toward the end of 1918, and the product was for sale immediately the following year. The start-up stage was very demanding. In addition to the breaking-in and operation of a new production plant, the period was characterized by the need for investments in A/S Titania and Lysaker Kemiske Fabrik, dwellings for the workers, et cetera. Furthermore, the economic situation was deteriorating during the post-war period, and product sales did not progress as anticipated. Consequently, the company faced a formidable task in organizing advertisements, sales and exportation of an unknown product to countries all over the world – even a product of inferior quality. The product for sale was partly unmixed titanium pigment and partly mixed forms of titanium pigment powders and pastes with a yellowish and coarse appearance. On top of everything, the price of the pigment from the plant in Fredrikstad was far too high, indeed twice the price of the competing white lead and zinc white products. In addition, the production plant in Fredrikstad started the manufacturing of prefabricated, varnish-containing top coat paints for maritime uses. The high tariff barriers in a number of countries made the introduction of the new products even more difficult. In 1921, the sales volume in Norway amounted to a total of 1,037 tons, whereas the total export volume only reached 338 tons. In order to launch the products and get sales abroad off the ground, travel activities and research studies were initiated in order to fine-tune the product properties and sales methods to each country. The Geneva Convention of October 1921 was to have great significance for sales on the international markets. The convention, in which the indoor use of white lead was prohibited, was ratified by a number of countries. Since titanium white was non-toxic and highly resistant toward smoke, gases and acid vapor, there was an increased demand for this product in indoor paints. However, complaints started to pour in because the titanium white paints were rubbing off (chalking) when used outdoors. The reactions from the consumers were harsh, and sales in Norway declined strongly. In the years up until 1924, the plant was operated in a rather uneven manner, partly because of sales difficulties, but also because of strikes among the workers. In mid-September 1920, the production was halted because of a salary conflict with the workshop employees, who did not resume their work for the rest of that year. In 1921, there was a seven weeks long work stoppage due to a major strike, and in 1923, there was a three weeks long strike following a disagreement in connection with the wage settlement. During and immediately after World War I, the worker wages were pressed up to rather high levels.

Omtrent 120 arbeidere vil i alt kunne faa beskjæftigelse».
Consequently, the very difficult economic situation during the 1920s made it necessary to bring down the salaries to what was considered an «ordinary price level,», especially after the Norwegian krone (NOK) was driven up to par. In 1924, the plant was run in a divisional manner and operated with a reduced workforce in order to avoid production stoppages and dismissals of workers during stoppages. The sectional operation continued for a few months until the end of 1925, whereafter the plant was run normally throughout the year. The media of that time, for instance Østfold Arbeiderblad, issued a comment on the company’s wage talks in 1921: «The black hand is hard at work nowadays. And one could say about Titan Co. that they have the necessary means at hand to paint the situation as black as can be. However that may be, the company has dismissed 40 workers. The purpose is wage pressure. They have in fact offered the workers a 33 percent pay cut. Anything less would hardly do. The workers could not accept this offer just like that, and they have requested negotiations. These are indeed initiated, but we do not know the outcome of the negotiations – if they have been carried out at all.» The magazine «Tidens Tegn» brought this report: «A/S Titan, which had to reduce the activity considerably this fall, partly because of pay scale difficulties and partly because of a decrease in domestic consumption, wants to go fully operational again as new, large orders have been placed from abroad. A total of approximately 120 workers may be employed.» Despite hard times and challenges in many areas, sales of titanium white increased steadily in the 1920s. Especially from the middle of the decade, this increase was a result of exports to countries outside the Nordic region. Notably, England brought in large quantities. In June 1922 the newspaper Smaalenes Social-Demokrat provided some background on the reason for the positive reception of titanium white in the English market, under the headline «Titanhvitt faar anerkjendelse i England» (Titanium white receives recognition in England): «The first week of May a well-known color expert, Mr. Noel Heaton, gave a speech on Titanium white – its chemical and color technical properties, in the Royal Society of Art in London. An account of the speech is to be found in the professional journal ‘Chemical Age’, May 13. Evidently, the speech was met with great interest, as testified by the account of the ensuing discussion. One of the listeners, Mr. Bruce Enderson, informed that he had considerable experience regarding the painting of gas containers. In that context, he had found that a single coat of Titanium white was sufficient, that the paint was durable, and that the surface remained smooth and well-suited for a second coat of paint. Furthermore, the journal says that Mr. J.D. Batton declared that Titanium white was a color long wished for by painting artists. Mr. H.O. Weller said that if there ever existed a rival to white lead, it had to be Titanium white. This statement does not, by itself, tell anything new, but is of special interest because it is uttered by Mr. Weller, who holds a leading position in the governmental Scientific Research

Farbenindustrie A/G. Mr. Weller is also a member of the committee appointed by the British House Office to look into the question regarding the prohibition of white lead. Moreover, a number of speakers predicted a great future for Titanium white,» as stated by the newspaper Smaalenenes Social-Demokrat. As a result, a number of training courses for master painters on the advantages of titanium white (when applied to graining and rustication) were organized at the plant in Fredrikstad. In 1927, Kronos Titan G.m.b.H (at that time Titangesellschaft m.b.H Leverkusen) was formed. The production started toward the end of 1928, with an initial annual output of 2,500 tons of TiO2. Thanks to favorable contracts with I.G. farben-industrie regarding the supply of the required steam, gas, water, and electric power, and the timely supply of ilmenite from Titania A/S, the production costs were expected to be lower than those of the production plant in Fredrikstad. According to the concluded agreement, the newly formed German company would, besides the domestic market of Germany, gain access to large portions of the European market. In addition, the company secured the rights to work such markets as China, Argentina, Brazil, and several other countries in South America. The formation of Kronos Titan G.m.b.H rendered the titanium

pigment production in Fredrikstad unprofitable. Consequently, in the beginning of 1929 it was decided to close down the chemical part of the production in Norway and continue the production of pastes and ready-made paints only. After the production cutbacks, only five workers were left at the company in Fredrikstad. Most of the supervisors and laboratory assistants were dismissed as well. The remainder of the staff was predominantly engaged in sales and administrative tasks.

THEIR OWN LABOR UNION The first industrial establishment on Øra dates back to 1916. During the fall of that year, the buildings of the copper extraction plant were erected. The workers, who were hired for the construction and later on the operation of the plant, soon realized the need for establishing their own labor union. As early as November 23 that same year, the necessary arrangements were made, and Øras Fabrikkarbeiderforening (Øra’s Factory Worker Union) was a fact. Karl Karlsen was elected the first chairman of the union.
Titan Arbeideforenings fane fra 1957 Titan Arbeiderforening’s banner of 1957
The lifespan of the newly established union was comparatively short, as the workers at Kronos Titan had their own union as early as 1923. Titan Arbeiderforening (Titan Labor Union) was established on December 23, 1923. Erling Bøckman became chairman of the union. The initial phase of the new union was characterized by some stormy and difficult years. The union experienced what appeared to be its darkest hour in 1929, when the company’s management reported that Titan on Øra in Fredrikstad was to be shut down and the entire production transferred to Germany. Of an initial workforce of 150 individuals, only 8 were still working fulltime on Øra. Later on, when only two workers were left, a few more were hired, and to some, this was perceived as the light at the end of the tunnel. However, the newly formed union and the company were to experience many meagre years, as it turned out. There was a continual fight for jobs, and layoffs and pay cuts were common occurrences in the 1930s. In 1938, in order to avoid further layoffs at the plant, the working time was divided in such a way that everyone worked five days a weeks. In 1940, 25 workers were engaged in the production, and during the most difficult period, the employees of Kronos Titan worked 24 hours a week. It should be noted that the management and the union were on good terms during the war years. The company was instructed to let everyone work fulltime, and it also provided the employees with fuels, loans, and other social support schemes.
AFTER THE WAR At the end of the war in 1945, the loans were cancelled, and the subsequent years practically meant a new start to both the union and the company. As of January 1, 1948 the retirement age was set at 68. The earnings of the workers were still low. Following a period of negotiations, production bonuses were introduced as an experimental arrangement, resulting in higher production volumes and bigger bonuses. In 1953–54 the company went through a comprehensive modernization program, which led to the dismissal of several workers and reduced production bonuses. The bonus agreement was later on cancelled by the union, and a new bonus system was introduced in 1963. This was followed by some active years for the union, in which 57

changes to the production (expansion into a fully integrated TiO2 production plant), including the transition to continuous shiftwork, was a time-consuming process. Two years later, in 1966, the paint factory was shut down and all of its workers transferred to the new production plant which was finished by the end of the year. 1970 is an important year in the union’s long-lasting activity. In September that year, a five shifts working time arrangement was introduced, including full compensation for reduced working hours. In the spring, six years later, a special workplace environment committee was established at Kronos Titan A/S. During the first year, the committee handled 30 registered cases. Most of them pertained to the question of how to improve job satisfaction by combating noise-, dust-, and gas-related illness.
MODERN TIMES At the beginning of the 1980s, the union counted 154 active members. One of the issues that attracted much attention at that time was the preparations made for the establishment of the neighboring company Ferriklor. Seeing that the company’s operation included the use of chlorine, the union managed to have an alarm system installed that could be heard in the production halls of Kronos Titan in the event of an accident. After one year of operation, it was conclude that «the new neighbor» had not caused the union members any inconveniences. When the union turned 60 in 1983, it was noted that seven of the first operators at the production plant had passed their apprenticeship examinations and, consequently, obtained higher salaries. The goal was to get everyone through within a period of ten years, and already four years later, the union concluded that they were on track to reach their goal. Furthermore, the fact that working hours for daytime employees were reduced by 30 minutes and shift workers were given an additional 14.4 days off per year, was very well received. 1989 was another important year in the history of the union and the company. Union branch leaders were granted fixed office hours, an arrangement that made it easier to organize and manage the activities of the union. After many years of arduous environmental battle, waste acid was, as of May 1, shipped by the company’s own boat to Langøya just off the shore of Holmestrand. During the first years of the 1990s, a lot of time was spent on issues regarding manpower. Early retirement, the use of temporary workers, and reduced overtime were central topics during the talks between the union and the company management. In 1998, this work continued through a formalized rationalization project, called «Prosjekt 98». The goal of the project was to reduce costs in order to achieve profitable operation even in times of difficult market conditions. Since then, there have been virtually continuous changes and adjustments in progress, and the labor union has always been working constructively with the management.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION The economic downturn reached Norway a little later than the rest of the countries of Europe, and culminated in a nationwide work stoppage in 1931 (the battle of Menstad). The long-term repercussions of the strike were felt even locally. In Fredrikstad city alone 1,400 people were out of work (of a total of 3,000 in the region), and the municipality of Fredrikstad came close to be placed under governmental administration. At Kronos Titan the manufacturing of Titanium white was shut down, as previously mentioned, and the production confined itself to some pastes and ready-made paints. In short, the time had come for the cost-cutting axe. Even though the number of employees was reduced through the shutdown of the chemical division in 1929, the time had come for additional workforce cuts. The following account is to be found in the company’s historical records: «At the end of 1931, two women, the storekeeper, the master painter propagandist, and two other clerical employees had left the company. All in all, the plant was operated by the lowest possible number of people and with great attention to the expenses. To the welfare society of today, many years later, it may seem stingy that the clerks had to pay for their own morning coffee – even the coffee they were obliged to serve the

casual visitors. Sandwiches were an absolute rarity. Many years later, during a dinner party, one of our agents had a good time telling about his first visit to Titan and how he was offered a sandwich from the office manager’s own lunch packet which he had brought along.» Even externally, substantial cost reductions were made. A/S Hafslund agreed to reduce the electricity prices, and, following a process in the legal system, the municipality was forced to withdraw the claim of a minimum tax on water consumption. A revaluation of the production plant resulted in a fifty percent reduction of the taxable value, which, in turn, led to reduced insurance costs. In the years up until 1945, the company consolidated its position, and it was released from a debt item of well over 3 million Norwegian kroner by its American owners. With the exception of 1931, when the financial statement showed a net loss of about NOK 55,000, the company managed to keep its head above water, delivering a net profit each year up until 1945.

I 1930 deltok Titan Co. A.S i to store utstillinger i Norge, nemlig Trøndelagsutstillingen i Trondheim og Østfoldutstillingen i Sarpsborg.

PRODUCTION AND SALES As a natural consequence of the situation of the company, the plant in Fredrikstad was looking for new production activities. The obvious thing to do was to expand the already existing production, which confined itself to the manufacturing of pastes and white, grey, yellow, and black top coat paints. In order to avoid time-consuming research and development, it was decided to enter into an agreement with the owner of «Det Hempelske Handelshus» in Copenhagen. Through the agreement, the plant in Fredrikstad was granted (as of January 1, 1930) the right to produce and sell Hempel’s ship paints in Norway and to Norwegian shipping companies abroad. In 1930, Titan Co. AS participated in two major exhibitions in Norway – the Trøndelag Exhibition in Trondheim and the Østfold Exhibition in Sarpsborg. Both of them awarded the company gold medals for its products. For many years, the company had purchased the varnishes required for the production of ship paints from other production

plants, but in 1932 it started producing most of the varnish types itself. Some efforts were made to promote the ship paint as an independent product, and despite the depression, sales were steadily increasing in the 1930s, from 207 tons in 1930 to 341 tons in 1935 to 466 tons in 1938 and 1939. However, the Hempel agreement was temporarily terminated on April 1, 1940, and during the subsequent years of occupation, the company had no contact with the foreign trade fleet. Consequently, the sales of ship paint were drastically reduced.
TIDOVIT Up until 1931, mixed pigments were manufactured at the German plant in Leverkusen. As of that year, this type of production was resumed in Fredrikstad, resulting in a welcome increase in activity and a higher profitability for the company. The product range was further extended. Following a prolonged period of research and development, the company was able to introduce a cheaper version of Titanium white, intended for ordinary painting purposes – a pigment quality that was going to have great impact on the future operation. The new, mechanically mixed product was introduced on the Norwegian market as TIDOVIT in 1937. Almost at the same time as the launch of the new pigment, a new type of packaging was introduced – five-layer kraft paper bags of 25 kg capacity. The customers, who were used to wooden barrels, initially had a certain dislike for the paper packing. But the wooden barrels disappeared, and eventually all of the pigment was packed in paper bags. As of 1938, the company hired traveling agents to visit traders and customers in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Following the shut-down of the unprofitable Titanium white production in the fall of 1929, very few workers were left at the plant in Fredrikstad. However, as the production of ready-made paint increased and the manufacturing of Standard A was resumed, more workers were needed when Tidovit and a type of dolomite extender were introduced in 1937. Toward the end of 1939, the number of workers reached 28, and the number of clerical employees was as high as 39. This apparently unusual combination of employees was due to the fact that the clerical employees handled sales and patent-related issues of affiliated companies as well. The high unemployment rate of the 1930s made it difficult for the previously dismissed Titan workers to get new jobs. For that reason, they were prioritized based on seniority when the company was hiring new workers. However, the company’s continuous efforts to reduce costs for the plant as a whole, ran parallel to the changes made to the manning. During the fall of 1937, a new taxable value was calculated, resulting in an annual cost reduction of well over NOK 100,000. That same year the board of directors decided to sell the company’s shares in Fredrikstad og Omegns Bank A/S, which added a few thousand kroner to the lean purse. As shown, the 1930s was a time of savings and consolidation. Considerable annual depreciation led to an improved liquidity, which was needed in connection with the comprehensive expansions of the subsidiary company Titania. 73

During the paint factory era, Kronos Titan had a number of posters made for marketing purposes. The posters, which were donated to Fredrikstad Museum when the company moved out of its old administration building, are of such a quality that they must be classified as «industrial works of art». Presented here are four originals, each representing the craftsmanship of a predigitalized era.

In the 1920s, the finished products were transported by horse and carriage from the plant on Øra to the railroad station or a suitable wharf for subsequent sea transport. As of 1929, the transport was carried out by designated workers and a new truck – a Chevrolet. That truck was replaced by a new one in 1935, which, in turn, was replaced by a new one in 1939. The latter was seized by the Germans during the invasion in 1940. Acquiring a new truck was a difficult task, but in October 1940, the company succeeded in getting hold of a one and a half ton Opel Blitz, which served the purpose for the duration of the occupation. In 1942, it was equipped with a wood gas generator, since gasoline was in short supply during the war. For two years the company engaged a traveling sales representative who was to travel the rural districts of Norway by his own car certain months of the year. Advertisement posters were put up in store windows, with similar signs on the walls outside the retail outlets. Later on, the nationwide promotional traveling activity was discontinued, and the sales department decided that the work had

to be done by the company’s own people. Naturally, the need for a car asserted itself once again. The chief executive officer, who was influenced by the state of things, was highly hesitant to the idea of acquiring a new car. Nevertheless a new car was bought, a small Ford Junior for the staggering price of 4,000 Norwegian kroner! Later on that car was replaced by a Chevrolet Standard, which, in turn, was replaced by a five-seater Dodge in January 1937. In March 1940 the company acquired a five-seater Chrysler, model 1939. During the occupation, the Germans seized the aforementioned truck and a car used for travel activities. Later on the company received compensation for both the truck and the car, after «a lot of hassle» as the historical documents report. The Germans made continuous efforts to lay their hands on the new Chrysler during the occupation, but, through a smart move, it was fitted out as a Red Cross vehicle intended for the company’s medical corps. Consequently, the Germans were not able to seize it! As the production volumes at the Fredrikstad plant were gradually increasing, new machines were needed in addition to those purchased for the manufacturing of the Hempel formulas. In 1935, the company bought a small mixer for small-scale production of ready-made paints to shipping companies that requested special colors. Three years later, a laboratory grinder was bought, and in the spring of 1939 the company allocated money for the purchase of two mixers and a dispersion mill. During the fall of the same year two new pigment packaging machines were installed, together with a pigment silo. This turned out to be the prelude to further expansions in the years that followed …

THE OCCUPATION YEARS As a result of the acts of war, Titan Co. experienced very difficult operating conditions during the initial years of the war. The company had limited access to its bank deposits, and in several areas in Norway communications were inoperative, and there was no connection to the other Northern countries. Eventually, the company was no longer able to run the operation normally, and the board of directors therefore decided «to bring into effect the production cutbacks demanded by the situation». Consequently, temporary clerical employees were dismissed and the general manning reduced. As of May 1, 1940 the company could pay the employees only 70 percent of their salaries; the remaining 30 percent were to be paid at a later date. To make up for the difficult supply situation, the employees were provided with fuel, and those who needed money for «life necessities» were granted loans. The Administration Council which was appointed by the Norwegian Supreme Court on April 15, 1940, did an excellent job making the business and industry run again, while at the same time making an effort to maintain prices at a sufficiently high level. As early as May 1940 the Council introduced regulations on, among other things, the exchange of goods between Norway and foreign countries. All money transactions had to go via Norges Bank, and the use of import and export declaration forms became mandatory. Eventually, Titan Co.’s sales to Denmark and Sweden, and to a certain extent Finland, were resumed. The authorities issued regulations on the use of a number of chemicals, on the recovery, processing, and rationing of lubricating oils, and on sales of turpentine, linseed oil and paint products containing linseed oil. In addition, the use

The artist Bendik Riis, who was born in Fredrikstad in 1911 and died in 1988, was a painter, illustrator, and poet. He made his debut at Høstutstillingen (The Autumn Exhibition) in 1933, and later became a recognized artist and a leading colorist. Kronos Titan is in possession of this painting. It was painted on March 7, 1953 at an hourly rate of 2,900 Norwegian kroner and an additional hourly rate of 1,940 Norwegian kroner for an assistant. It is not known how many hours it took to finish the job, but the text in the bottom right of the painting indicates that Riis delivered the painting ready framed. If Riis was commissioned to paint this one for Titan, there is reason to believe that he has painted the wrong buildings, because it is actually the tank trucks of the neighboring company, DeNoFa, that are heading through the main gate, as shown to the right in the picture. In order to wriggle out of the situation and to get paid, he probably has painted Titan Co on the back of a random truck that is on its way past the company…

of tinplated sheet metal in packaging was prohibited. Naturally, the last-mentioned provision had great impact on Titan Co.’s production and sales. Later on, the restrictions on the use of linseed oil paints were tightened. Outdoor paint products containing more than 15 percent linseed oil were prohibited, and there was a general ban on the indoor use of linseed oil paints, except when applied to floors, doors, and casings. Soon after the end of the occupation the company’s board of directors explored the possibility of having funds transferred from its American parent company. When it turned out to be impossible, an arrangement was made in which certain banks granted the necessary line of credit. Eventually, the cash position of the company allowed for debt repayment, and already by the end of the year 1941 all loans were redeemed. During the first two years of the war the plant in Fredrikstad bough titanium pigments from the plant in Leverkusen, but eventually, the Germans were forced to divide the available amounts between all the Nordic countries. As of October 1, all deliveries from Leverkusen were cancelled. November 23, 1941 marked the 25th anniversary of the company, and despite the difficult situation, the board of directors decided to celebrate the occasion. On November 22 all employees were invited to a gala dinner at the restaurant Bjørnen. The food rationing was severe, but birds and fish were exempt regulations. Each of the dinner guests had to bring two fat coupons (food stamps) of 10 grams, and the menu, in which goose and fish were the main ingredients, was a delightful change from the wartime diet.

kamuflasjemaling.

Kronos Titan was in a position to make good money on paint during the war, as the German Wehrmacht wanted a large-scale production of camouflage paint. However, the company rejected the offer under the pretext of not having the required production facilities. When peace came, the country experienced an acute shortage of goods. For that reason, Kronos Titan began realizing an old stock of paint produced from marine animal oils, and when the company was allocated 45 tons of linseed oil toward the end of 1945, it started the production of ready-made paint based on this oil. The company also took over and realized 60 tons of paint from German inventories, which yielded a handsome profit. In order to get the purchasing of the necessary raw materials for the paint and varnish production in Norway started, the engineer Weider was granted a six months’ leave so that he could travel to the USA. This was done by request of Maling- og Lakkfabrikkenes Forbund (the trade organization of the paint and varnish producers) and the Ministry of Supplies.
THE YEARS OF OPERATION FOLLOWING 1945 When the war was over, it was feared that an economic downturn would follow, as the factories had to change from large-scale war production to a production solely intended for peacetime needs. It turned out that the shortage of both raw materials and finished goods was to last for several years. During the war, the

Lettelsen i markedet varte ut første halvår 1950.

construction of any new factory installation was put off and maintenance kept to an absolute minimum or quite simply dropped. Along with a strong demand for many types of products, the country needed to rebuild its fleet and those areas devastated by war. Instead of the feared economic downturn, the war was followed by a period of strong economic expansion, in which Kronos Titan took part. In January 1946 the company succeeded in getting the authorities’ permission to let Dr. Jebsen travel to Germany in order to gain insight into the situation at Titangesellschaft. Due to the Allied occupation of Germany, travelers were met with considerable difficulties making their way and obtaining food and shelter during the journey. Consequently, Dr. Jebsen was given the rank of a senior officer – a colonel – and dressed in uniform he gained access to the Allied wardrooms, among other things. During a similar visit at a later point, CEO Anker and H. Hansen acted as officers; even their driver was given the rank of captain! Pretty soon, the delivery of titanium pigments to Norway and the other Nordic countries picked up, initially from the USA and later on from Leverkusen. The production of the mixed pigment Tidovit, used in the manufacturing of paints, was rapidly increasing in the years following the war, and sales peaked in 1955. In the beginning of 1949 there was a shift from seller’s market to buyer’s market. Buyers of industrial pigments assumed a more reserved position, both in Kronos Titan’s target area and in the USA. As a result, it became easier to obtain

titanium pigments from the USA, and the situation allowed for considerably larger shipments from Leverkusen at lower prices, especially when delivered to Norway and Sweden. The relief in the market lasted until the mid-1950s. At that point the Korean War broke out, and once again the demand was high. The resulting pigment shortage drove the prices up; still Kronos Titan decided to keep their prices at a moderate level. Naturally, the customers appreciated this policy which, later on, resulted in goodwill in the market. Around 1946–47 there was a glaring need for paint, and the authorities allowed the paint factories to produce paint from varnish types made from a mixture of herring oil, Chinese wood oil, and copals. In 1949 the plant in Fredrikstad discontinued the production of pastes and paints made from marine animal oils, as the consumers were asking for linseed oil paint, for which a buyer’s permit was more easily obtained. The linseed oil rationing in Norway was maintained until the end of 1951, long after it was ended in the other Nordic countries. The manufacturing of a new type of flat paint, which in 1949 was marketed in Norway under the name Ticomatt, represented a new development for the laboratory and the company that would hold a central position in the future production of the plant in Fredrikstad. Initially, this paint quality was sold as a paste based on limed oil made from tall oil and wood oil, and it was not affected by the rationing regulations. When turpentine was added to the paste, it produced a flat paint with properties immediately appreciated by the customers.

It had high hiding power, was easy to apply, did not dry too quickly and, therefore, did not leave ridges or patches of discoloration, and it was washable. Ticomatt sales increased rapidly, and soon the annual sales volume reached approximately 800 tons. Eventually, Ticomatt went through a series of changes and improvements. For a period it was manufactured as a semipaste based on linseed oil and wood oil, but later on these oils were replaced by in-house produced tall oil alkyd resins. In the course of time, a number of different compositions of pigments and extenders have been applied in order to obtain a still better product quality. Ticomatt is sold both as semi-paste and as a finished product. Once, Ticomatt was a new development to the Norwegian paint industry, and it might be held that it was a benchmark for similar products from other paint producers in Norway. Ticomatt was one of the company’s best paint products after the war, and probably would have sold in large volumes if produced in other colors than white. However, out of consideration for the domestic paint factories, which purchased large quantities of titanium pigments from Titan Co. AS, this never happened. Over the years the requirements imposed on properties such as tinting power, gloss, chalking resistance, yellowing resistance, fineness, dispersibility, whiteness, etc. were made increasingly stricter. Hence, the company’s own chemists, and those of the competitors, were making continuous efforts to produce improved types of paint, partly for general purposes and partly for the use in special products. More and more, it became a matter of tailor-made pigments.

omsetning.
Fra bedriftens nye plastlaboratorium midt på -50-tallet From the company’s new laboratory for plastics in the mid-1950s
During and after World War II the plastic industry, both in USA and other countries, experienced a surge. The upturn was particularly strong in the field of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). During the war the company’s American parent concentrated on the manufacturing of two types of products, namely PVC stabilizers and Bentone gel formers, which turned out to be profitable sales products for Kronos Titan. The company started introducing these products in the beginning of the 1950s, and soon several other manufacturers showed an increasing interest for them. In order to support sales and provide customer service, the board of directors in 1953 decided to fit out a special laboratory for plastics at the plant in Fredrikstad, a laboratory that turned out to be of great use in connection with the introduction of stabilizers at a later point. Up until 1959 these products were selling pretty well, but as of 1960 the titanium dioxide market conditions became rather difficult in the Nordic countries. The turnover of Kronos Titan was strongly affected by a situation of abundant supply and continuous price pressure. The competition from British and Japanese titanium dioxide plants was particularly noticeable and, eventually, several new European plants appeared. The favorable customs provisions in Scandinavia provided the new plants a good starting point for establishing themselves in this very market.

EGET IDRETTSLAG Den organiserte bedriftsidretten i Fredrikstad kom i gang allerede i august 1937.
THE COMAPANY’S OWN SPORTS CLUB Organized company sports in Fredrikstad came into existence as early as August 1937. However, when the war broke out and the occupation became a reality, there was a general strike among athletes, and further company sports activities were suspended. Shortly after the war, the activities were resumed, and Kronos Titan wanted to take part. Yet, Kronos Titan Sport Club was not founded until June 1, 1948. The first board of directors consisted of Johnny Corneliussen (chairman), K. Schou Olsen (secretary), and Ivar Kraft (treasurer). The newly founded sports club chose to concentrate on soccer, skiing, orienteering, shooting, and athletics. Over the years, Titan Idrettslag (Titan Sports Club) has meant a lot to the employees of the company. Among other sports events, the annual Titanløpet (the Titan Race) has become famous among company athletes. Moreover, the sports club has asserted itself in all the disciplines in which it has participated, and the social circle of TIL has always been a source of inspiration and joy to its members.

NY TID MED INTEGRERT TIO2- FABRIKK (1960 – 1990)
NEW TIMES WITH INTEGRATED TIO2 PLANT (1960–1990)

In order to face the competition from the newly established plants, the Kronos Titan management was working hard to come up with new projects. A strategy was planned, in which the ultimate goal was to build a separate titanium dioxide plant in Fredrikstad. In February 1960, a special committee was formed with the purpose of finding a suitable building site, investigating the profitability of increased production capacity, and assessing the economic prospects of a new production plant in Norway, Sweden, or Denmark. The committee visited all locations in Scandinavia potentially suitable for the establishment of a new plant. Simultaneously with these extensive investigations, a smaller project was introduced envisioning the construction of a smaller plant in Fredrikstad, with an annual capacity of 7,000 tons of rutile pigment based on imported, unprocessed titanium dioxide from the other plants of the company group. In other words, it was to be a post-treatment plant which possibly could be combined with a fully integrated titanium dioxide plant at a later point. The recommendations about the construction of such a plant were presented in January 1961, and during a board meeting in Kronos Titan AS in 1962, it was decided to build a titanium pigment plant in Fredrikstad, with an annual capacity of 7,000 tons. Total costs were estimated to be 19.4 million Norwegian kroner. 4 million of these were own funds; the remainder had to be externally financed. It had long been known that Kronos Titan had been working on the plans for a substantial expansion of the manufacturing plant on Øra. When a positive decision was presented, it received much publicity in the media. On September 14, 1962 Dagbladet commented on a substantial American investment: «A telegram from New York, received through Associated Press this morning, reports that the new production plant is to be situated in Fredrikstad. It is going to produce titanium pigments, with an annual capacity of 15,000 tons – when completed.» Further, it is said that «there is no information on the cost of the plant or the number of employees needed». Fredrikstad Blad says in its account that «the market value, based on today’s level of prices, is well over 52 million [Norwegian] kroner». At an earlier point, the latter newspaper also informed that a copy of the bust of one of the founders, Dr. Gustav Jebsen, had been erected just outside the main entrance of the company on Øra. The original bust is to be found in the municipality of Sokndal, where the mines are located. (When the administration building on Øra was torn down in 2014/2015, the bust was moved to outside of the entrance of the new storage and administration building.)

The iron fixers had quite a job with the substructure of the 2,700 square meter building

Naturally, the recent decision was very well received, what with the increasingly heavier competition. Pretty soon, negotiations with the municipality of Fredrikstad were initiated, regarding the leasing of a building site alongside the wharf by the river south of Titanco’s old plant site. In August 1963, a lease was signed for a 68,000 m2 (730,000 ft2) building site. At the same time, the company and the municipality entered into a contract on the delivery of water, and the necessary power supply was secured. Ground work was initiated, followed by a period of intense activity in order to erect the 2,700 m2 factory building. About 100 people were engaged in the construction activities in the fall of 1963, when the highest section of the building started to take on forms well over 30 meters above the ground. The building project was, naturally, accompanied by a number of sensational transport projects in the streets of the city. One of these, a large cylinder delivered by Glommens mek. Verksted (Glommen’s Machine Shop), was unable to get over the Fredrikstad bridge on its way across Glomma. The huge tow had to be turned around on the floor of the bridge and carried back to the machine shop, where it was loaded onto a barge for subsequent transport to the wharf on Øra.

With the new addition to the premises, the company had a plant site of approximately 35 acres. «The number of ships calling at the port of Fredrikstad is expected to increase, and a lengthening of the wharfage is started these days», NTB (the Norwegian News Agency) reported. After 14 months of construction works, the plant, with a base area of approx. 3,000 square meters, was finished. 2,000 meters of concrete piles and 400 meters of axially loaded piles were needed to support the newest and most automated equipment that was to be installed in a building volume of approx. 35,000 cubic meters. Extensive investigations of soil mechanics revealed that the piles had to be driven 45 meters down in order to be fixed to the bedrock. 8 kilometers of steam mains, water pipes and general process piping were installed. Power cables and wires were measured to be approx. 30 kilometers. When finished, the total cost of the new production plant amounted to about 16.5 million Norwegian kroner, which was approximately 3 million below the allocated amount. This certainly was a feather in the cap of those responsible for completing the large project.

The production plant was opened with all due ceremony on April 22, 1964. Among the many prominent guests attending the opening ceremony was former UN Secretary-General Trygve Lie, at that point Minister of Trade and Shipping. CEO Erik Anker told that «strong forces had been working actively to ensure that the new plant was built in Sweden, but the way they were met here at home was of great importance.» In that context, he mentioned Trygve Lie as an important man who, among other things, was able to convince American interests that Norway was just as suitable as the other countries. – Trygve Lie gave us great support, Mr. Anker emphasized, describing Lie as a good Norwegian whose efforts to have the new plant built on Øra in Norway was of critical importance.

The expansion plans literally waited in line at Kronos Titan, and great was the joy when 39.3 million Norwegian kroner were granted to the realization of the Ticon 4 project on March 1, 1965

Image-building is indeed a familiar marketing concept in our time, but Kronos Titan, as part of an international group, was early to adopt a stylish profile both for its own van and driver!
FURTHER EXPANSION The plans for an expansion – to complete a fully integrated titanium dioxide plant – were by no means stowed away. Barely 10 months after the inauguration of the pigment plant, the board of directors decided to carry out the plans. On March 1, 1965, 39.3 million Norwegian kroner were allocated to a project named Ticon 4. An integrated installation would make it possible to increase the annual capacity to 15,400 tons and give work to 150 people. An agreement was made with A/S Borregaard on the delivery of 68,000 tons of sulfuric acid over a period of ten years. The construction of the new installation gained support and its own construction manager from the mining company Titania. Engineers were brought in from the company group both in the USA and Germany. The plant would be the most modern of its kind in Europe, and was to be completed in time for the company’s 50th anniversary in November 1966. Before the start-up of the fully integrated plant, a lot of work had to be done on the staff side. Not only did the company have to hire 130 employees; these people also needed the skills necessary to run a highly automated production process. On the initiative of the company, a new chemical-technical course of study was introduced at Fredrikstad yrkesskole (Fredrikstad Technical College). But not only the operators needed training. Several teams of engineers received special training by fellow subsidiaries abroad, and the total cost of the training program was considerable. At full operation the company would now have 300–350 employees, clerical employees included. Due to a high level of

automation, the production, which was to be based on round-the-clock operation, would be run by only 25 persons on each shift, amounting to a total of 100 persons. The new building project was launched immediately after the allocation of funds, and by July 1, about 19 kilometers of wooden piles and 2.3 kilometers of concrete piles had been driven into the ground. Then began the pouring of the concrete cellar, installation of structural steel works, pouring of floor slabs, and laying of foundations, before the walls and coverings were put in place. The craftsman services were to a large extent bought from companies in Fredrikstad and the Oslo region. I addition, as many as 60 tanks of different kinds were ordered from machine shops in Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg. On March 15, 1966 the newspapers describe the transport of one these tanks with an overall length of 5 meters, weighing 12 tons and with a diameter of 4 meters. The tank was shipped by boat from Fredrikstad to Drammen, and then by a special-purpose truck to Mjøndalen during night. Why? Because it was an acid storage tank that had to rubber-lined in order to prevent corrosion. «Before the tank is shipped back to Fredrikstad the way it came, it is given a finishing touch by skilled workers,» the old newspaper clippings read. The special equipment for the new plant was to a large extent ordered from Germany, based on knowledge gained at the fellow subsidiary in Leverkusen.

126
THE YEARS OF OPERATION UP UNTIL 1970 As previously mentioned in this book, the company experienced rapidly increasing sales volumes in the years following the war, with the exception of a couple of setbacks in 1952 and 1957. The high turnover growth rate applied both to the products from the plant in Fredrikstad and to products sold on commission for affiliated companies. As for paints and pastes, however, the turnover peaked around 1955 and then gradually dropped. In 1965, following a thorough evaluation of the situation based on an internal analysis, the management decided to discontinue the production of paint, paste, varnish, and coating materials as of the fall of 1966 when the fully integrated titanium dioxide plant was started up. The only «old» products that the company wanted to keep, until further notice and in parallel with the TiO2 production, were the mixed pastes, which still were to be manufactured in the old production plant. Eventually, the production facility for paints and pastes was dismantled. Still serviceable machines and equipment were sold. The decision to discontinue the production of paints and pastes was a very tough one. Over the years the company had become renowned for its products, products which the customers soon would come to miss if the production was to be shut down. However, in order to continue the manufacturing of these products, large-scale investments would be required. Furthermore, competing with the company’s own customers was not considered a satisfactory situation.

As early as November 9, 1966 the first batch of titanium dioxide pigment was shipped from the new plant by Fred. Olsen’s cargo ship M/S Brio, heading for England. The running-in of the new plant marked the beginning of a completely new era in the history of the company. Issue no. 3, 1966 of the in-house journal Ticoposten says a few words about this: «By now, Project Ticon 4 is finished, bringing along a considerable expansion of the company’s activities. These days, more than 100 people walk through the entry gate on their way to new jobs in our integrated titanium dioxide plant. To be part of something new, to be in on it from the very beginning always is interesting. A lot of people surely will be inspired by this and, therefore, achieve good results and experience job satisfaction. To others, especially those who for many years have been working in established positions in the paper industry, footwear industry, or our own paint factory, this new situation may cause a difficult period of adjustment. However, we all have a common goal: A secure and pleasant place of work, for the good of ourselves and our families.»

To store begivenheter kunne feires samtidig, nemlig innvielse av ny fabrikk og bedriftens 50 års jubileum Two great occasions could be celebrated at the same time, namely the inauguration of the new production plant, and the company’s 50th anniversary

NEW PRODUCTION PLANT AND 50TH ANNIVERSARY In the running-in period of the new plant, the company had time to celebrate its 50th anniversary. 60 invited guests and representatives of 11 nations participated in the commemoration on November 25 at Hotel City in Fredrikstad. Three days later there was a grand Titan party for the employees in the welfare hall of DeNoFa-Lilleborg. The 400 people at table made the party a memorable event. The company could look back on the completion of investments of a total of 65 million Norwegian kroner, and once again the time had come to get to grips with the everyday tasks.

134
At the plant the ilmenite concentrate now was treated with sulfuric acid from Borregaard. During the process the oxides of the ilmenite concentrate were transformed into water-soluble sulfates. A substantial part of the iron sulfate was extracted from the solution by crystallization and filtering. Iron sulfate could be used for sewage treatment, among several other things – a field of application that was to be of great importance in the time ahead. Titanium dioxide of two different crystalline forms were produced, rutile and anatase. Due to its higher refractive index, the rutile form of titanium dioxide has a higher hiding power and tinting power than anatase. Furthermore, the rutile form has a higher photochemical stability (see separate discussion of TiO2 particle properties). In practice, these distinctions make the rutilebased outdoor paints more durable and less prone to chalking than similar paints made from the anatase form of titanium dioxide. Due to the relatively high costs in connection with the start-up of the new plant, the redeployment of employees, and the altering of the production layout – and, to a certain extent, low prices – 1966 became a difficult year. The company’s financial statements showed a net loss of 3.8 million Norwegian kroner, which was the highest annual loss in the company’s recent history. The following two years also turned out to be difficult because of low demand for and price pressure on the company’s main products, titanium pigments. Eventually, it became apparent that an annual capacity of 14,000 tons of titanium pigments was somewhat too low to achieve long-term positive financial results. Consequently, the management soon deemed it necessary to investigate the possibility of expanding the production capacity. Since the plant was situated on a relatively large building site nearby a municipal wharf, the reasonable solution was to ship the finished products by boat and have the raw materials delivered directly by ship. Thus, everything was set for an expansion of the plant.

INCREASED CAPACITY During a meeting on March 13, 1969 the management informed the board of directors about the plans made for a possible doubling of the capacity as of January 1, 1972. The expansion would require a further investment of 50 million Norwegian kroner. As all the details of the expansion plans were not yet completely clarified, a smaller, 25 percent expansion was suggested at an investment cost of 8.5 million Norwegian kroner. During another board meeting six months later, the board of directors approved a projected expansion of the annual pigment production capacity from 14,000 to 17,000 tons. This meant an investment of 7 million Norwegian kroner. Construction works were started almost immediately, and already in mid-December 1970, the expansion was finished. Despite hard competition from foreign producers, 1960 was a good year for the company. The turnover was high because the annual production of titanium dioxide pigment was sold in its entirety by the end of the year, which led to a considerable reduction of the inventory. 75 percent of the sales revenue that year came from the export market. In the fall of 1970, Titan introduced a five-shift system that attracted nationwide attention when presented. The new shift system afforded the continuous shift workers great benefits, such as 40-hour work-week and more continuous time

off at more convenient times of the day, and the workers were fully compensated for loss of shift allowance. It became easier for the company to obtain skilled workers during the summer holidays, which, in turn, led to reduced costs connected to the hiring of holiday substitutes. The new shift system served as a model to many manufacturing companies, and Titan became known through media for its efforts to open every information channel between the employees and the management on an everyday basis. A continuous focus on capacity expansion turned out to be rather important, as the sales of pigments were constantly increasing. In 1972, when the company changed its name to Kronos Titan A/S, the plant reached an annual capacity of 18,500 tons. Still, there was a pressing need for further expansions, and it was decided to increase the capacity to 20,000 tons. Soon after this, the need for a further expansion presented itself once again. When the board of directors decided to increase the capacity to 25,000 tons, the company needed a new discharge permit, both to air and water. After obtaining this permit I July 1974, a new project was initiated at an investment cost of well over 25 million Norwegian kroner. Construction activities were started immediately. The factory building had to be enlarged once again, and an additional rotary kiln, a sand mill, a digestion tank, and a filter press were acquired. Reaching the new production volume turned out to be difficult, and not until the beginning of 1982, following some additional investments, full capacity utilization was achieved. This meant reduced production costs per ton and higher profit on sale. The competition from foreign producers was still strong, and in the first years, the company found it difficult to raise the prices to an acceptable level. However, in the mid-1980s and onward, the demand for pigments was increasing in more and more markets, which made a slow yet steady price increase possible. Sales volumes were evenly distributed among the Nordic and the overseas markets.

Jernsulfatet, som er et biprodukt ved TiO2produksjonen, er velegnet til rensing av kommunalt avløpsvann Iron sulfate, which is a by-product in the manufacture of TiO2, is suitable for municipal wastewater treatment 141
Kronos Titan A/S fortsatte sitt arbeid for å bringe driften i mer miljøriktig retning. CO-PRODUCTS The new effluent discharge license that the company obtained in 1974, when the capacity was increased to 25,000 tons, presupposed a drastic reduction of discharge to water after 10 years. Iron sulfate, which is a byproduct of the TiO2 manufacturing process, turned out to be suitable for municipal wastewater treatment. In order to fulfill the demands of the license regarding discharge to Glomma, the company started preparing new markets for iron sulfate trade. After installing a dryer and a granulator, the product could be sold both as powder and granulate. In the first phase, Scandinavia was the target market, and the largest wastewater treatment plants in the Stockholm region were among the buyers. After a while, some exports to overseas countries, such as Canada and USA, were started. The divalent iron sulfate produced turned out not to be suitable for all types of treatment plants, and the Swedish company Ferriklor AB became yet another important buyer of the product. In 1979, Kronos Titan and the Swedish company entered into a 20-year agreement on the delivery of iron sulfate as a raw material to Ferriklor’s production activities. At the same time, they made an agreement on the construction of a separate production plant for the manufacturing of chlorinated iron sulfate. Kronos Titan A/S continued its work to lead the production in a more environmentally sound direction. The next step in that area was an agreement with Fredrikstad og Omegn Avløpsanlegg (FOA) in December 1981 on the delivery of steam. The installation of steam mains from FOA to Titan was started, with a branch pipeline leading to DeNoFa, which signed a separate steam agreement with the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Titan received its first steam delivery in December 1984. Using steam from FOA instead of self-produced stream based on traditional oils meant annual cost savings of 1–2 million Norwegian kroner. Throughout the years, Kronos Titan AS in Fredrikstad had provided titanium

dioxide exclusively as a dried powder. However, a request from one of the company’s Swedish customers led to the start-up of a development project aiming at the manufacturing of pigment slurry (titanium dioxide dispersed in water). Cooperating with Langereds Färg in Karlstad, the company was able to meet the request for slurry, which was pumped directly from the dispersion tank to a waiting road tanker outside the production hall. The demand for slurry was rapidly increasing, and in order to avoid delays a 40 ton, stainless steel storage tank was built which made the loading of the tankers more efficient. The new product was well received and provided the company with additional revenues of about 50 million Norwegian kroner over the first four years of delivery. There was another type of product development going on in the 1980s, aimed at the rapidly growing oil industry. Through the company Abbey Chemicals in Scotland, Kronos Titan A/S became the supplier of Bentone gel formers which were used in the oil production on the Norwegian continental shelf.

In the spring of 1986, a mud press was installed at the plant. The goal of the investment was twofold. First of all, the company had to meet the requirements from the environmental authorities regarding the filtering off of sediments (mud) from the clarification tanks. This had to be done in order to avoid Glomma getting exposed to TiO2, sulfuric acid, iron sulfate, and heavy metals from the digestion solution still present in the mud. Secondly, the mud press enabled the company to recover some of the values from the production process by bringing down the TiO2 loss in the clarification step from approximately 5 to 1 percent. The estimated result was an increase of the production capacity of titanium pigments to 26,000 tons per year. To provide the company with an even stronger financial foundation, and to cover the heavy costs that the company was facing due to the requirements on total waste treatment, plans were made to increase the production capacity to 31,500 tons of titanium pigments per year. The estimated investment cost of the expansion was 35.7 million Norwegian kroner. The project was approved by the board of directors in June 1988. In the fall the following year, the expansion was finished. At the same time, the company started working on the installation of an extensive computer-based control system in the post-treatment plant. The purpose of the introduction of this new technology was to improve the monitoring capability, thereby making it easier to take action in the event of deviations during full operation. It should be mentioned that the new computer system was hooked up while the plant was running at full capacity – without any loss of production output or quality. The company was eager to grow in a market with a high

Kronos Titan AS i Fredrikstad har i jubileumsåret 2016 en kapasitet på ca. 36 000 tonn. demand for their products, and the last expansion was barely brought to a close when the management, toward the end of 1989, started discussing the possibility of doubling the production capacity in the TiO2 plant – based on the sulfate process. However, the discussions came to nothing; the plans were quite simply shelved. In 2016, when Kronos Titan AS in Fredrikstad is celebrating its 100th anniversary, the production capacity is approximately 36,000 tons. Between the fall of 1989 and today, the capacity has been increased through continuous process improvements, not through investments as in the 1980s.

UTFORDRINGER PÅ MILJØSIDEN

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

Titan Co. A/S obtained its first discharge license in connection with the establishment of the post-treatment plant in 1964. The license had to be reviewed when the board of directors decided to increase the annual pigment production capacity to 25,000 tons. After intense and difficult negotiations, new emission and discharge licenses were granted by the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) in the summer of 1974. The discharge permit was granted on the condition that the discharge to Glomma, predominantly consisting of diluted sulfuric acid, iron sulfate, and heavy metals, was substantially reduced by the end of 1982. The company was instructed to produce plans on how to bring about this reduction. The license included a clause that required the company to pay 2 million Norwegian kroner a year to a blocked account in a Norwegian bank. The funds were to be invested in waste treatment equipment in order to fulfill the required discharge reduction by the date of expiration of the license. Further negotiations with the environmental authorities allowed for a new, preliminary license, valid from January 1985, on the condition that the company found a final solution to its pollution problem as soon as possible. The challenging environmental situation of the company resulted in harsh reactions from the environmental organizations and various special interest organizations. Headlines like «Titan wants to deposit in Skagerak – Glomma is saturated», «Titan discharges brought to government», «Neighbors want Titan investigated» and «Greenpeace hit Titan» created a heated atmosphere in media at times.

Langøya, som ligger utenfor Holmestrand, ble løsningen for bedriftens deponering av syre Langøya, which is located off the shore of Holmestrand, became the solution to the company’s deposition of acid
154
TWO OPTIONS FOR TOTAL WASTE TREATMENT Therefore, after obtaining a preliminary license, the company started working on two options for a total treatment of the discharges to Glomma. The first option for a final solution was to build a separate wastewater treatment facility for concentrating and recovering waste acid. A facility of that kind would be expensive, and the necessary technology was not yet available. An alternative solution was to cooperate with Norcem Cement A/S on shipping waste acid to Langøya off the shore of Holmestrand in Oslofjorden. On this island, with its limestone quarries dating back to 1899, the waste acid from Titan was to be neutralized, and the solids/mud could be deposited in the limestone quarries. This solution would render the construction of an acid recovery facility at the plant in Fredrikstad unnecessary. The waste acid option, as it was called, appeared to be the most suitable one, and a pilot plant was developed in cooperation with Norcem. During the fall of 1986, the testing of the process came to a point where it became clear that the neutralization of acid and deposition of solids on Langøya was the best solution to the waste problem of Kronos Titan A/S, both from an environmental and a technical point of view. This

under rehabiliteringsperioden.

solution would render it possible to rehabilitate the island, at the same time fulfilling Norcem’s desire to maintain activity during the rehabilitation period. Norcem was to take care of all the investments on Langøya, as well as all costs pertaining to transportation, acid treatment, and deposition of solids. Furthermore, it was Norcem’s responsibility to arrange for the necessary deposition permit. Kronos Titan was to pay a fixed annual amount for the service, based on the assumption that the annual capacity at the plant in Fredrikstad was increased from 25,000 to 30,000 tons. In order to collect the waste acid that was to be shipped once a week from Øra to Holmestrand, storage tanks with an acid capacity of approximately 2,000 cubic meters had to be built on Øra. In addition to solving the problem of acid discharge to Glomma once and for all, this arrangement would be accompanied by reduced energy consumption, which in turn would lead to lowered sulfur emissions in Fredrikstad. Furthermore, a project of this type would be less capital-intensive and, therefore, less of a burden to Kronos Titan.

GREEN LIGHT FROM THE GOVERNMENT After the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority gave the green light to the use of Langøya, the Ministry of Environment granted Norcem Cement A/S permission to neutralize the waste acid from Kronos Titan by means of lime and deposit the final product on the island. Thus, the company’s board of directors could approve the agreement with Norcem in principle as early as July 1987. The agreement was formally signed in fall of the same year. The Minister of Environmental Affairs at that time, Sissel Rønbeck, stated that the Ministry, by permitting waste treatment and deposition on Langøya, had paved the way for a project that appeared to meet every requirement of the society as to the interaction between nature conservation and industrial interests. After filling up of the waste disposal site, the area was to be covered with soil and planted so that the island once again could become a beauty spot to the people of Holmestrand. The project proceeded as planned, and after two months of testing of the neutralization plant, the shipping of waste acid from Øra to Langøya started on May 1, 1989. Already since March, the freighter M/T Kronos had made several test trips, and now it was put into regular operation with three trips a week.

162
The installation was formally opened on May 24, with 80 guests representing a number of involved agencies. This date naturally became a red-letter day in the environmental history of the company – a win-win situation for all the involved parties. The Langøya solution resulted in a pronounced reduction of discharge of components subject to licensing. Discharge of heavy metals was reduced by approximately 95 percent, and discharge of sulfuric acid and iron sulfate went down by approximately 90 percent. After some time of shipping acid from Øra to Langøya, Kronos Titan acquired a similar ship, M/S Titan, from its German fellow subsidiary in Nordenham. This ship was going to serve as a standby freighter ready to carry waste acid to Langøya if M/T Kronos, for some reason or other, had to be taken out of regular operation. For obvious reasons, the freighters became crucial to the company in connection with the new discharge solution, and after well over three years of operation, Kronos Titan reckoned the time had come to think new thoughts about the transport situation. It was decided to put both the freighters out of commission since they were due for extensive maintenance and did not have the necessary capacity. As a replacement for the freighters, a barge with 50 percent higher capacity was purchased in 1992 for well over 15 million Norwegian kroner. The increased capacity meant that the number of trips per week could be reduced from three to two. The barge, which carried 2,330 tons of mud and diluted acid each trip, turned out to be a proper investment for Kronos Titan. Therefore, it was the hope of the company that the vessel could be used for the 15 years’ duration of the agreement with Norcem.

BEDRIFTEN RUNDER 75 ÅR THE COMPANY TURNS 75

75 years must be considered a respectable age for a company on Norwegian soil, that right from the start was under international ownership and with the whole world as its market. From the humble beginning, Kronos Titan has, through reorganizations and changes, returned to the starting point, which is the manufacturing and sales of titanium dioxide. The company was established on the basis of that product, and its continued existence is based on the same product in the jubilee year 1991. Through its 75 years of existence, the company has experienced both good and bad times. It has stood firm through several crises, through times of war, and through periods of economic fluctuations. Looking back, we note with pleasure that no matter the difficulties, the direction of the development has been favorable for the company. Therefore, in the jubilee year 1991, the company is in a fairly good condition, despite a rather challenging market situation. The company has been forced to compete in the market on equal terms with large foreign company groups. It has been an instructive situation, which has led to a growing understanding of the importance of high product quality and of the need for cost reduction and operation efficiency. However, many years of continuous operation have caused excessive wear and tear on the production equipment. In order to ensure the necessary uptime of the installations, there has been more and more focus on maintenance. Following a number of expansions, the production capacity reached 31,500 tons of titanium dioxide in the jubilee year, and the longstanding environmental issue was solved by the implementation of the Langøya model (as previously mentioned). However, as it turned out, the demand for titanium dioxide was declining, and in the jubilee year 1991, the roughly 250 employees had to realize that the golden age was gone, and the company was forced to operate at reduced capacity. In addition, the company experienced operating problems in the middle of the summer. Three machinery breakdowns caused repeated disruptions, Fredriksstad Blad says. During a board meeting in August it was decided to cut the annual costs by 30 million Norwegian kroner, including through voluntary exits. After years of expansions and good earnings, the start of the 1990s turned out to be very difficult for the company on Øra. Profits and losses barely on the plus side, even a net loss in 1993, resulted in a lot of negative publicity in the media. But the labor union stood united, and the CEO of that time, Truls Tandberg, was compelled to resort to one of his famous sayings in order to strengthen his faith in the future: «A true Titan does not die in the first act.» His words came true; in the spring of 1994, the company again was able to operate at full capacity as the market conditions gradually were improving. While the production volume naturally was the one factor that received most attention externally, the company was putting a lot of effort into the quality of its products. Hence, the

Her orienterer Jan Ivar Ruud besøkende under en «Åpen dag» i 1993 The company went through a difficult time the first years of the 1990s. Nevertheless, it was perhaps even more important than before to keep the locals informed about what was going on behind the gates to the plant. Here, Jan Ivar Ruud is briefing the visitors during an «Open day» in 1993

Her fra en brannøvelse i november 1993 Preparedness is important in the event of unforeseen incidents at the factory. Here from a fire drill in November 1993
satisfaction was great when Det Norske Veritas on March 19, 1994 presented the company with an ISO 9002 certificate as a proof that the required quality assurance systems were in place. Although the company had solved its problem related to discharge to water, work had to be done to find a solution to the emission to air problem. Consequently, that same year work began on the project planning of an SO2 scrubber, which, according to the license requirements of SFT, had to be fully operational as of January 1, 1997. By investing approximately 50 million Norwegian kroner, annual emissions were to be reduced by 700 tons, corresponding to approximately 2 percent of the total SO2 emissions in Norway. After many years of difficulties, the beginning of 1995 foreboded a better balance between supply and demand in the titanium pigment world market. In the month of May, the production volume exceeded 30,000 tons during a period of twelve months – for the first time in the history of the company! But already a few months later, in the beginning of the company’s 80th year of operation, the market was declining yet again, largely due to the fact that all the major pigment producers of the world had increased their production rate during the last few months. Since iron sulfate had been developed as a separate product for some years now, the competitive situation had become more challenging even on that area. In order to avoid outdoor storage and, thereby, to ensure stable quality of that product as well, a separate iron sulfate warehouse was built in 1996, with a capacity of 5,000 tons. An investment of well over 5 million Norwegian kroner provided the company with an up-to-date and highly flexible warehouse.

TOTAL WASTE TREATMENT AT LAST With the start-up of the new SO2 scrubber in 1997 – an investment of approximately 50 million Norwegian kroner – the company on Øra finally had a total waste treatment system, and was «free» from its history as a big polluter. – This is the finishing touch! One of the dirtiest companies of the 1970s in this district has become as clean as a clothing store, a representative of Titan Arbeiderforening, Edgar Johansen, said to Fredriksstad Blad at the inauguration of the installation. In order to ensure systematic work routines and deviation handling procedures on the environmental area, the company started working toward being certified according to ISO 14001. As with the ISO 9002 certification in 1994, the company predicted that the customers eventually would demand an assurance of that type from their subcontractors. In August 1998 the environmental certificate was a reality, in a market with rising product prices. The plant even reached its financial goals and production target that year, and in order to secure the company’s position as an efficient and quality-conscious production unit, Project 98 was launched. Among other things, there was to be a stronger focus on expertise as one of the major competitive factors. Consequently, a comprehensive training program was planned, both with regard to automation and the production process itself. 1999 was a year when the effect of the restructuring of the titanium industry – through acquisitions and alliances between various actors – became more pronounced. These factors made Project 98 all the more important. The competitors become more cost-effective, and the customers make increasingly strict demands on every part of the delivery, such as quality, delivery time, packaging, and prices. The goal of Project 98 became more and more obvious: to get into the first division in the productive efficiency league. – This means efficiency regarding all the demands made by the customers. An important challenge is to learn to live with the continuous adaptation that the increased efficiency

requires, the in-house magazine Titanposten said in December 1999. At the same time as the company was facing this challenge, new buildings at a cost of well over 13 million Norwegian kroner were under construction. A new laboratory next to the control room, and a new finished goods warehouse in connection with the packing area were erected at great speed so that they could be put into use already in the summer of 2000. Yet another project, approximately at the same cost, was the automation of the black end of the plant. The project had to be adjusted to the full operation of the plant, with only one day of maintenance stoppage! Despite the demanding time limits, the project resulted in a modern process control system as part of the effort to increase the efficiency and competitive strength in the new millennium. And it was not long before the company was honored for its future-oriented investments to secure its position in the market, at the same time protecting

local jobs on Øra. In January 2001, Kronos Titan is in fact named «Company of the year 2000», owing to high profitability, a solid position in the market, and good workplace environment, among other things. Behind the award were Fredrikstad Industriforening (Fredrikstad Industrial Union), Fredrikstad Handelsstand (Fredrikstad Business Community), and Fredriksstad Blad, which had been handing out the award since 1988. 85 years of company history in Fredrikstad had left a mark, and during the award ceremony, it was clearly stated that the award was meant as «a proof of a well-run company being an inspiration to others!» The company replied by saying that «through restructuring and streamlining we are making an effort to remain an important cog in the local area for years to come». The news released by Kronos Titan in the summer of 2000, that it was the company’s intention to extend the waste deposition agreement with Langøya by 15 years, probably was the decisive factor that made people believe in that statement. This solution to the longstanding pollution problem had been introduced as a milestone in the company’s many years of existence – both locally and internationally – when the agreement was first signed in 1987. Since that time, 200,000 tons of sulfuric acid has been shipped by boat every year from Øra to the waste disposal site on Langøya off the shore of Holmestrand for further processing into gypsum. As it turned out, what was said more or less came true when the year 2000 was a closed chapter and the time had come to enter the results of the year. With a final result of 65 million Norwegian kroner the company, with its 208 employees, achieved a profitability that justified the aforementioned price. Favorable international market conditions and exchange rates contributed the most to one of the best annual results in the history of the company. Naturally, this was a real upturn to a company that went through restructuring, with a future goal of shrinking the workforce to less than 200.

Large manufacturing companies are dealing with correspondingly large (volume) numbers on the raw material and product side. In 2001, Kronos Titan reached another historic milestone. In the morning of February 17, the company, based on its production plant from 1967, reached two million tons of goods handled by the public port on Øra, corresponding to approximately 85,000 truckloads. Or put another way: A roughly 200-meter high heap covering an area the size of a football field! The raw material ilmenite from Titania AS in Sokndal was the determining factor when the port registered the high volume of unloaded materials. About one year later, the company marked yet another occasion, this time on the environmental area. The barge «Kronos» made its 1000th crossing with sulfuric acid from Øra to Langøya off the shore of Holmestrand. Since the start-up in 1989, two million tons of waste acid had been shipped to Langøya and deposited as industrial waste in large craters on the island. The crossing from Øra to Holmestrand takes seven hours. «On deck there is a sea of light, and the peculiar vessel causes a stir among boaters and cottagers when it crosses the fjord in the holiday season», Fredriksstad Blad says in July 2002.

HARD ECONOMIC TIMES While the beginning of the new millennium had exceeded all expectations, a completely different reality had to be dealt with in the period from 2004 to the 2008/2009 financial crisis. Under the headline «Million loss for Titan» in Fredriksstad Blad, we read that «one of the largest manufacturing companies in the district, Kronos Titan, had a net loss of almost 2 million [Norwegian] kroner in 2004». Furthermore, it is said that the company management is planning for efficiency-enhancing measures, but the president of the labor union, Øistein Pettersen, says they do not fear dismissals. He says the company has chosen a strategy which aims to produce more with the same manning. Both the management and the board of directors express optimism and assume that the loss can be turned into a new net profit fairly quickly. It is said that prices appear to be rising. In August 2005 it is concluded that the company is fairly solid – with an equity of 135 million and a debt of 213 million Norwegian kroner. Like the rest of the Norwegian industry the company fears a shortage of qualified personnel in the years ahead. True, 80% of all the production workers at the company already had obtained their craft certificates by the middle of the 2000s, but in order to increase the qualification among the remaining part of the workers, the company makes an effort to emphasize the importance of having a craft certificate. However, the hope of turning the 2004 loss into a net profit already in 2005, is not met when profits and losses are presented in August 2006. There are still red figures, specifically about 10 million Norwegian kroner. But it is hoped that an increasing demand will push the prices up again. High energy prices, expensive raw materials, and unfavorable price trends for the company’s finished goods are the reasons for this substantial loss. Consequently, the company reviews all its costs, and makes cuts wherever possible. But there is little to be done with certain major cost drivers, such as oil, as long as Norway is outside of EU. In fact, it turns out that the Fredrikstad company has to pay 1000 Norwegian kroner extra per ton of oil, as compared to businesses within EU.

When the 2006 profits and losses are presented in the summer of 2007, there is no sign of improvement. On the contrary, Kronos Titan has been through its worst year ever, the accounts showing a net loss of almost 27 million Norwegian kroner! One has to go back to 2002 to find anything similar; a net loss of 21 million Norwegian kroner. After three consecutive years of net loss, the company on Øra is supplied with funds from the parent company – almost a historic event to a company that for many years has been used to large net profits. Much of the blame for the 2006 loss was placed on a «sensitive currency situation»; in short, a too strong Norwegian krone. As it turned out, the economic challenges of Kronos Titan did not end with this. 2007 was even worse, with a net loss of as much as 38 million Norwegian kroner. CEO Per Thoen admits that it might take a long time before profits and losses are back on acceptable levels. At the same time however, he tells Fredriksstad Blad that there is no danger of the foreign owners shutting down a business with an annual turnover of 570 million Norwegian kroner! The company has done all it can do to save money through efficiency-enhancing measures and a workforce that is down to 170 employees. Prospects are not good, and people are starting to fear how it all will end. And as if this was not enough, the new financial crisis hits the company with full force. In March 2009 it is clear that the company has to shut down production as of April 1. And it’s by no means April fool in advance. The international market is failing, lay-off notices have been issued, and there is no way around a few weeks’ stoppage to reduce inventory. However, dismissals are out of the question, since all the employees will be needed when production is started again. After reduced production in January, February and March, and a complete stop in April and May, production is running again, and gradually the company starts making money. The financial crisis «goes to rest» and things are starting to normalize in the financial world. 2011 is a good year, and in 2012 Kronos Norge achieves a profit of 470 million! The market development has been particularly favorable, and after several years of economic fluctuations, the company realizes that it has to prepare itself to be able to withstand the fluctuations in the years ahead.

RENEWED ENERGY AGREEMENT – AND A NEW BUILDING As part of the efforts to reduce costs, Kronos Titan signed an agreement in January 2014 on steam deliveries from Frevar on Øra. After almost one year of negotiations with the municipal incinerator plant, both Kronos Titan and Denofa could sign a new, renegotiated energy agreement based on waste incineration. The agreement was to ensure predictable prices for many years to come, both for the producer and the buyers. Later that year, a historic event took place at Kronos Titan. After 98 years in the same administration building by the wharf, the company, in September, moved into a top modern building situated next to Øraveien. Borg Havn needed more space for the development of a new logistics terminal for Norlines, and Kronos Titan’s administration building was in need of rehabilitation; this created an opportunity for a win-win situation. A new building with room for a workshop, a spare parts warehouse, and the administration was erected during a 12 months’ intense period of construction. Then the venerable administration building was torn down. − The building is heated by 99% recycled material, the warehouse is fireproof, and the air quality is better, it was said at the inauguration of the building. In several ways 2014 was an eventful year– in a positive sense. Besides securing a long-term energy contract on steam deliveries and merging several functions under the same roof in a new building, which, by the way, is built on historical grounds (the company sport club’s old football field), the year was concluded with a new production record. As much as 35,000 tons of titanium pigment was «squeezed through» the production line at Kronos Titan in 2014, which proves that things always are going up and down in the export industry – from one year to another.

Altså for 50 år siden.

There were signs of drama in the anniversary year. The barge Kronos, which is carrying waste acid from Øra to Langøya close to Holmestrand, was hit by a local ferry boat on June 23. The barge was moored and unloading acid when it suddenly was hit by MS Kalkøy. Both the broadsides of the barge were heavily damaged, the most visible damage being a 10 meter tear in the hull. The barge had to be put out of commission, and the production activity on Øra was, for some time, in a critical situation. However, an alternative means of transport was found, and after seven weeks of repairs at the shipyard in Horten, the barge was back in normal operation.
THE COMPANY IN THE ANNIVERSARY YEAR 2016 Kronos Titan AS turns 100 in a time marked by optimism at the company. The demand for their products is good, although the margins could have been better. The plant is going through an active period of investments into upgraded production technology. Investments of 25 million Norwegian kroner in the anniversary year, and additional 30 million in 2017, are the most comprehensive commitment to the company since the construction of the white end was completed in 1966; 50 years ago, that is. Through the upgrading process all critical parts in the white end are to be replaced by new ones by the end of 2018, thereby enabling Kronos Titan to produce more than 38,000 tons per year. In addition, these investments pave the way for new pigment grades intended for new areas of application. Investments in new technology also have a positive impact on the workplace environment, at the same time making it possible to reduce production costs.
