W

e live in a world where education and resourcefulness are the keys to success and these two elements work together to shape our path. They are like two sides of the same coin, enabling us to reach our goals.

A famous young entrepreneur on TikTok went viral online in his interview about which was more important, “Diploma o diskarte? ”The dilemma of having a degree over being strategic opens a hot debate and a serious discussion all over social media. People have their own sentiments as to how we should incorporate them in life. But why do we have to choose if we can do both?

Breaking the Stigma: Elevating Mental Health Awareness on Campus I n the whirlwind and often high-pressure environment of college life, mental health is a crucial yet frequently overlooked aspect of student well-being. Amidst the hustle and bustle, it is essential to spotlight the silent struggles that many students face. It’s high time to lift mental health out of the shadows and give it the attention it deserves. Kumusta ka sa gitna ng lahat ng ito? Institutions need to bring the conversation about mental well-being to the forefront and make it a priority in every student’s journey.

College life is a transformative experience, filled with excitement and new opportunities. However, it can also be a time of intense stress, isolation, and mental health struggles. The pressures to excel academically, coupled with the challenge of adjusting to a new environment can be overwhelming.

Mental health issues are not just personal struggles but campus-wide concerns.

Effective mental health support goes beyond traditional counseling services. It involves creating an environment where students feel comfortable seeking help and where resources are easily accessible.

Additionally, training students as peer counselors can provide additional layers of support, allowing students to connect with others who understand their experiences and challenges.

Ignoring mental health needs is not only detrimental to students but can also impact academic performance and campus safety. Institutions must view mental health support as an integral part of their commitment to student success.

While strong support systems are important, we must also acknowledge how certain academic practices can worsen mental health issues. High academic expectations can cause severe stress and burnout. When schools push for constant excellence without considering individual student needs, it makes mental health problems worse.

Moreover, if professors and staff don’t show understanding or support, it can significantly affect students’ wellbeing. Sometimes, teachers may not recognize the mental health struggles

students face. This lack of empathy can lead to increased stress and feelings of isolation, especially when strict deadlines and harsh grading add to students’ anxiety. Also, if policies aren’t flexible, it can put students in difficult situations, making it even harder for them to handle their mental health issues.

To address these challenges, faculty and universities must take proactive steps to create a supportive academic environment. This includes fostering a culture of understanding and flexibility, implementing policies that accommodate mental health needs, and engaging in open dialogue about mental health issues. Universities should promote open conversations about mental health, involving both faculty and students, to demystify these issues and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. Creating a campus culture that values mental health involves integrating mental health resources into everyday student life, ensuring that support is actively promoted and normalized.

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health requires a concerted effort from both students and academic institutions. By recognizing the significant

impact of academic pressures and implementing supportive measures, universities can foster an environment where mental health is prioritized, and students feel empowered to seek help.

Mental health awareness on campus is not just a matter of policy but a reflection of commitment to student well-being. By addressing the factors that contribute to mental health issues and taking meaningful action, it can transform the academic experience and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed both academically and personally.

As universities strive to create supportive and understanding campus environments, it is essential to recognize that mental health is just as important as academic success. The time has come to break the silence and end the stigma surrounding mental health struggles.

By fostering a campus culture where students feel empowered to seek help and are supported every step of the way, institutions can make mental health a priority, not just a topic of discussion. When someone asks me about this intriguing question, I know that I have the answer, and I won’t even hesitate to say diploma over diskarte. The perspective behind it will fall on what we call “success.”

The majority will conclude that success will be a lot easier to

achieve when you have a proper education. You won’t need to work under the sun with sweat and dirt all over your face. Jobs will hunt you, and probably no one will judge you. Am I right to say diploma? Is it really practical nowadays?

In order to be successful, education is important. Since we were young, the objective of finishing college has been embedded both in our minds and in our hearts. It is through having a degree that we can achieve our dreams and aspirations in life. “Wala tayong mapapala kung hindi tayo mag-aaral.”

The notion of success lies within our belief in having a diploma. It shapes our skills and knowledge and sometimes measures our capability to face reality. Because of diploma, many people have a limited opportunity to find a job. Some have already given up because of the difficulty of studying. And worst of all, passion is not enough because poverty is your number one enemy. And so,

These heart-wrenching words were spoken by a child clutching a baby carrier, lost in a world torn apart by war. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas is an evident reminder of the devastating impact of violence on innocent lives.

Every day, children and families are caught in the crossfire, their lives shattered by the relentless cycle of violence. As the conflict escalates, reports of Israel’s control of Gaza’s border with Egypt and the ensuing attacks in Rafah have led to a staggering number of casualties and

being resourceful is a way to live and survive.

Diskarte is what we always hear and listen to. Inside and outside the school, workplace, home, on the streets, or even everywhere, we need to be strategic. Many people believe that “diskarte” should prevail over diploma. Some of these testimonies have been proven by successful entrepreneurs such as Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Henry Sy that despite not being able to finish college, they have reached their peak because of being resourceful. Diskarte is a Filipino value that embodies resourcefulness, creativity, and the ability to make the best out of any situation. It encompasses both critical thinking and decisionmaking. If a person is strategic, he or she will achieve success. But this mantra will not apply under all circumstances. Many people will argue that being resourceful is not sufficient to achieve triumph.

It isn’t more effective if we use our knowledge before in a form of action, thinking about all the possible outcomes and consequences. This developed our decision-making and performance as individuals and workers; we became more progressive in life and the dedication to becoming successful will lead us to success.

A diploma is a passport that opens doors to opportunities, while diskarte is the art of transforming obstacles into stepping stones.

Diploma paved the way for a brighter future. Diskarte is not just about surviving but thriving in the face of adversity. Both signify the end of one journey and the beginning of another.

It’s a milestone that marks our readiness to take on the world and the resilience that drives success.

READY, SET, RUN! W

e are told to believe that life is not a race— that we are supposed to feel the present and move at our own pace like everything will eventually come to its rightful place. But, when the sun sets already, does it really set for everyone?

Life is not a race—but that is not the case for all. While others have the luxury to just spend their day lounging in bed with their remote control casually flipping through television channels, others have to spend every second working on a thread so they can put food on the table. Others have to run twice or even thrice faster so they can keep up with the demands of life—so they do not get left behind in the race t h e y did not choose to enter.

Running as fast as they

could is not an option for everyone, because for many, it is a necessity to survive. Life is a race—a race against the burdens on our shoulders plus the chaos and complexity caused by social injustices and systemic expectations.

Everyone was put into different starting lines and given different hurdles and circumstances along the way. Even at a young age, many of us are laden already with responsibilities and pressures. From the need to meet our basic needs to pursuing our ambitions, life requires us to run fast.

The race begins early, and the idea and pressure to keep our steps at a certain pace can be overwhelming.

And the idea of failure can sometimes overshadow the idea of how far we have come.

And while life is supposed to be a competition against these challenges only, society has distorted this notion as the societal mindset makes it a competition against one another—where the desire to be superior and the fear of falling behind dominates the playing field. Life as a race is even more aggravated by greed and inhumane intentions as others do not get opportunities and privileges despite being deserving.

Sometimes, in the pursuit

of their personal intentions, others could do whatever they want even if it means pushing other people out of the field. And most of the time, those who are victims of the society’s concept of so-called justice are also often the underprivileged and marginalized ones, burdening them down even more. So no matter how much they try, what is fast is still slow compared to those who can afford unfair advantage.

We are not meant to outpace each other because the race is not set for us to be each other’s competition.

But that is not how the game unfolds.

However, despite all these, rest should still not be seen as some sort of a delay, but a crucial part to maintain balance and well-being.

While it is a pause from the inescapable race, it is where one could get the energy to endure and surpass whatever lies ahead. To take some time to breathe and let out whatever weighing us down within is essential to win the never-ending race.

The ideal view of life not being a race is not the reality for everyone. So, in a world where everything seems to be a competition, who would want to be the farthest from the finish line?

t’s important to be aware of the issues in our country because it’s not just a personal choice, but a civic responsibility. The West Philippine Sea is renowned for its diverse marine ecosystems, including extensive coral reefs, seagrass beds, and various fish populations. This diverse marine ecosystem not only supports the livelihoods of local fishermen and the tourism industry but also plays a crucial role in global marine conservation efforts. The deep blue sea not only represents the essence of Philippine culture but also holds the key to our nation’s self-sustainability and energy independence.

In recent years, it has unquestionably emerged as a focal point of regional and international attention, provoking considerable concerns over territorial disputes, environmental sustainability, and geopolitical tensions.

Who would forget this viral statement of the former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo or should I call Guo Hua Ping who became a national meme in the social media platforms during a senate probe that became the talk of the town? An issue that questioned the Philippine Government’s credibility because they allowed a 33-year-old, so-calledFilipino-citizen to lead in the country without even verifying her real identity.

But the question is, “Who is the real laughingstock?” Was it Guo who cannot answer simple senate questions or was it the government who was outwitted by an impostor, claiming to be a farm girl raised in this country? I believe it is the latter.

This whole Alice Guo issue started last March 25, 2024 when Senator Sherwin Gatchalian revealed documents that have raised suspicions on the possible link of a recently raided offshore gaming service called Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO), renamed as Internet Gaming Licensees (IGL) to Bamban Mayor Alice Guo whose name appeared in the electric bills and car registration found inside the Tarlacbased gaming site hubs Hongsheng Gaming Technology, Inc. and Zun Yuan Technology. The names of her parents, Angelito Guo and Amelia Leal who appeared in her birth certificate were also said to be unidentified persons according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, as these people do not have any records of birth, marriage or even death certificates.

Later on in June, Sen. Gatchalian revealed that Guo might be the Chinese Guo Hua Ping who entered the Philippines on January 12, 2003. A sign of Chinese infiltration in the Philippines.

The National Bureau of Investigation also revealed documents of two Alice Lea Guo having the same name and birthday which proved the suspicions for identity theft.

The Philippine government has condemned these actions, emphasizing that such maneuvers violate Philippine sovereignty and international maritime laws, including provisions under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The actions of the China Coast Guard threaten the safety and rights of our forces in the West Philippine Sea. They are using tear gas, lasers, and aggressive behavior to endanger our soldiers. One of our courageous soldiers lost his thumb while defending our rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Additionally, the Chinese are sabotaging our boats, robbing our soldiers of their equipment, and brazenly intimidating our navy, hindering the delivery of vital supplies to our troops stationed at the shoal.

The cry of our fishermen is so loud that they don’t have the freedom to fish in their own country’s waters.

They are appealing for help as their livelihoods are at risk due to China’s

Proper screening of candidates during the said election must have prevented the impostor from acquiring a position. It took them almost two years to realize that a person without clear identity has been ruling the city, not to mention abetting illegal transactions and aiding corruption in their place.

Well, maybe not all are aware because these actions cannot be done solely by Guo. It only takes a few paper bills to silence a mouth and gain an alliance.

No one will know if no one will talk.

It is also questionable how the Philippines, who hated illegal activities,

aggressive, provocative, and violent actions. Filipinos feel unfairly accused of theft despite their legal right to access and fish in the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). They only want to sail and catch fish without harassment in their own country.

This ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for global awareness and support. We should not put our brave soldiers’ and fishermen’s sacrifices into nothing . Let’s all be aware of what’s happening right now.

Take the time to educate ourselves on important issues. This is not something we should ignore. Instead, let’s use our platforms, social media, or any means possible to make a difference - to claim what’s ours.

The Alice Guo-POGO controversy surely gave us a belly laugh but this is also an eye-opener to the public to not just trust anyone because not everything we see is true. This is also a reminder for the government to take actions in improving the national security and governance by avoiding negligence in their work. Let us not wait for the moment when people are asked “What are the nation’s improvement?” and the people would answer “Your honor, hindi ko na po maalala.” (Your honor, I cannot remember anymore). Let us be the reason why the Filipinos could laugh in a good way and not through mockery because with or without Alice in our land, the government should function properly, accordingly and fairly; doing its responsibility as it should.

hey say that there are two things you can’t talk about without making enemies: politics and religion. Both can be divisive. Yet, when these two intertwine, the impact can be both great and disturbing. One perfect example is Apollo Carreon Quiboloy, the selfproclaimed “Appointed Son of God” and “Owner of the Universe,” whose religiosity masks a harsh reality.

Quiboloy is a Filipino pastor, founder, and leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, Inc. (KOJC), a religious group whose life is devoted to serving the Lord, our God. With this public representation, Quiboloy is portrayed as a just leader and a holy pastor, devoted to proclaiming the words of God. However, behind this facade lies a dark truth. According to the

Philippine Star, “In February 2022, Quiboloy was placed on the most wanted list of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation following his indictment before the US District Court in Santa Ana, California, for “conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion; sex trafficking of children; conspiracy; and bulk cash smuggling.” These severe misconducts are entangled with the harsh reality that he has been exploiting women and children, using his position of power to coerce them into sexual servitude under the guise of religious duty.

These allegations are not merely accusations; his indictment serves as a dark reality that haunts his victims to this day. It underlines the gravity of his misconduct, placing his followers in a life filled with

trauma instead of peace.

His leadership underpins much of the social control within their organization and the fear among followers that victims often struggle to come forward.

Out of fear that they might no longer please God and the pastor, many of Quiboloy’s followers donate money they cannot afford, perpetuating a cycle of exploitation under the guise of spiritual obligation.

This fear inculcated by his teachings not only highlights his religious misconduct but also reinforces his control over the followers, further enabling his crimes.

If a tree is to be known by its fruit, and we know that the fruit has been poisonous, then it must be our responsibility to identify the tree and decide what to do about it. In this case, the fruits of Quiboloy’s teachings reveal a dark side that runs deep. Faith and power, when tainted by greed, produce not salvation but suffering.

The truth is, the promise of salvation can never be justified when it is built on the suffering of others. Because how can we ignore the cries of the oppressed when the supposed “shepherd” is the one leading them astray?

Diaz, the Sports Editor, secured their ticket to Luzon-wide Higher Education Press Conference (LHEPC) as they won in the 20th Regional Higher Education Press Conference (RHEPC) with the theme ‘AI and Ethics: Shaping the Future of Campus Journalism in the Digital Age,’ held at NGN Gran Hotel, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, January 22-24.

Rumbaoa bagged 3rd place in Poetry Writing- Filipino while Diaz secured the 5th place in Sports Writing- English and 6th place in Copy Reading and Headline Writing- English.

Meanwhile, Joshua Culo and Exanne Joy Cristobal also represented the school publication in PhotojournalismFilipino and Column Writing-English respectively with the guidance of their TPV Co-Adviser, Carl Alconcer.

he Commission on Human Rights (CHR) headed by Atty. Jimmy P. Baliga, CPA, Regional Director of CHR Region 2 organized an orientation on the Center for Human Rights Education Program for Pillarican student leaders and support staff, held on February 13 at OLPC-C’s Audio-Visual Room.

Aligned to build a culture of human rights in the academic sector, the CHR introduced the Center for Human Rights Education (CHRE), which aims to establish a continuing program of research, education, and information to enhance respect for the primacy of human rights.

The CTED students claimed top honors, with English majors Angelica Jean Abad, Ma. Ariela M. Andres, Jasmine Joy L. Angoluan, Rachel M. Laboguen, and Brigith Ireshelle R. Inocencio winning the Best Paper award for their study on the Effectiveness of Comic Strips in Enhancing Grade 8 students’ Vocabulary. Science majors Maricel C. Blanco, Maricris I. Causo, Arlene T. Clemente, Arielle Joy Reyes, and John Olsen M. Viloria received the first runner-up award for their research on The Inquiry-Based Approach in Earth Science while Math majors Frances Ann Acenas, King Laurence Cariaga, Airich Corpuz, and

Quilang’s team for their research on The Antibacterial Activity of Bamboo Shoot Extract, with Kristine Angela N. Ercilla’s group receiving the second runner-up award while Kerwyne D. Through the leadership of Sofronio Turingan, the Community Extension and Outreach Program Director with the active participation of Samuel Gammad, Phd, Dean of the College of Business

Administration, Reinalda Mas, Dean of the College of Accountancy and their faculty members and students, the outreach program was organized into three important meetings throughout the year, each with a clear focus aimed at improving the economic stability and financial management skills of the community.

During the first meeting, OLPCC representatives educated the residents on the fundamental principles of managing and budgeting their money as discussed

On the second meeting, they guided the community members on how to maintain and grow their finances by collecting the barangay financial status, analyzing their data over the past years , identifying the pattern of financial habits and evaluating how much money the barangay has accumulated. Through these, the residents understood their financial track better and made informed decisions for the future.

The final meeting culminated a full review of the final list of financial assessment to the residents of barangay Casalatan as OLPCC distributed a sample borrower slips and explained the importance in maintaining financial records.

The Outreach Program has empowered the barangay Casalatan to take control of their financial stability and to manage their current finances better with the understanding on how they will sustain their barangay financial reliability for a long run.

rior to the National Celebration of Valentine’s Day, the OLPC-C Counseling and Guidance Services Center made its move towards rekindling its programs and activities by organizing a seminar-workshop dubbed “Love, Sex, and Lasting Relationship,” held at the OLPCC JHS Gymnasium, February 13.

With an aim to inform and enlighten students, different speakers prepared to discuss the

reasons and primary consequences of feelings and emotions. The workshop commences with a simple energizer calling students who are brave enough to confess their feelings in front of the crowd.

During the initial part, the first year and second year students participated. The first speaker, Ms. Geraldine L. Biyo, gave an introduction on how crush, infatuation, and love differ. She highlighted how significant it is to be

aware of feelings and to know how these feelings affect us. Ms. Minnie Uy, the second speaker, emphasized the primary consequences of our emotions that may lead to teenage pregnancy. Mr. Jenaro Al I. Valencia, the third speaker, recapitulated the main points of the discussions and focused his attention on informing students about the importance of conducting the said event.

n an inspiring initiative, the Second Year Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) and Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) students spearheaded an outreach program at Casalatan Elementary School focused on teaching catechism to Grades 1-6 pupils which was part of their Theology IV subject and organized under the guidance of Melanie Ramos, Theology instructor on April 5.

The education students demonstrated remarkable creativity in delivering the lessons, using a variety of methods to engage the elementary pupils. From songs to visual aids and prayer sessions, the outreach fostered an environment of joy and reflection. The young learners were enthusiastic participants with many expressing excitement about what they learned.

The program served as a practical application of the BSEd and BEEd students’ theological studies. By teaching catechism in a real-world setting, the students were able to develop their teaching skills while putting into practice the Christian values learned in their Theology IV subject. It was a holistic experience, intertwining their academic formation with meaningful service to the community.

COC celebrates its 22nd Criminology Day

Ms. Melanie Ramos, who spearheaded the initiative, emphasized the importance of grounding future educators in both professional competence and social responsibility.

“Teaching theology and catechism is not just about knowledge, but about shaping character,” Ramos said. “These future teachers are learning how to inspire their students to grow not just intellectually, but spiritually.

The outreach program leads education students from various disciplines to work hand-in-hand to teach essential lessons on faith, morality, and Christian values. Covering core principles of Catholic teachings, the program was designed to be engaging and age-appropriate for elementary school students. From interactive storytelling to hands-on activities, the outreach focused on making catechism enjoyable and relatable to young minds. It highlighted the students’ commitment not only on academic excellence but also community service particularly in fostering moral and spiritual values among young learners.

Moreover, Dean Casauay awarded the ‘GIMPEAR Award’ to Mark Lester, a fourth-year BEED student, for his exemplary service and also the Dean’s listers from the previous semester including students who performed excellently during their practice teaching. Collaborative synergy beyond numbers: COA DAY 2024 Amidst the sea of determination, every district strived to defy the odds and ignite the fierce battle for supremacy, but among the fourteen districts, District 12- Return on Assets roared their way to the top as they were crowned the overall champion of the event with 282 points. Following the winner, District 3-Standards placed 1st runner-up with 272.5 points, while District 9-TGAS garnered 255 points, securing their spot as the 3rd runnerup.

he Accountancy students conveyed their determination to stand together despite their differences as one district as they took a break from their calculators and focused on the spear of survival, thrill, and fun on the COA Day 2024 with the theme “Beyond Numbers: Fostering leadership and teamwork among Accounting students,” at the OLPCC JHS Gymnasium, February 23.

The Hunger Games-inspired COA Day started with an igniting fire from the 14 districts, namely; Accountant, Ad Valorem, Standards, Incorporators, Balance, DACS, Goods, Capital, TGAS, Bad debts, PAR, ROA, Intangibles, and Goodwill. Academic events such as the Intellect Quest, where the brain is their ultimate weapon, and nonacademic events like poster-making, slogan-making, AVP, Group Comic, Flag making, Hataw JPIA, and different team-related games were conducted in three assemblies before the final

day in partnership with the Accounting Certification and Training Institute (ACTI).

The whole-day event started with a colorful parade of each district followed by the bench yell competition that echoed in the event place, leaving memories of fierce rivalry in its wake.

The highlights were the look-a-like segment where the students performed as their celebrity counterparts bringing a perfect balance of fun, humor, and talents, and the Amazing race to test the unity, resilience, and pursuit of excellence.

“Since this was my very first time being an officer of such a huge organization, I struggled a lot thinking about how I was going to handle and conduct the most awaited event which is COA Day. Luckily, despite having no experience, I was guided and supported by Sir JM, the JPIA Adviser, together with the help of the JPIA officers to whom I entrusted and delegated tasks that contributed to the success of COA Day 2024. Despite all the tireless preparations and multiple meetings, it was all worth it, especially when we witnessed how the students enjoyed, laughed, and the camaraderie which led to strengthening the spirit of the Pillarican JPIAN community,” Precious Foronda, the Local Chapter JPIA President, added.

With their collective strength of minds united with purpose, they rose, fought, and ignited the light.

The adventure may have ended, but all districts hold dear the precious memories they’ve shared. CNM DAY 2024: Unleashing student nurses’ versatility I

n making space for a rest from books and out from their clinical uniforms, the College of Nursing and Midwifery celebrated their annual College of Nursing and Midwifery Day with the theme “#CNM2024: Fueling Dreams, Nurturing Minds, Empowering Compassionate Care,” February 22-23.

This event aims to uphold and promote the versatility of student nurses in the field of arts, multimedia, and pageantry that pave a way for a chance to bloom and embrace individualized capabilities.

In line with its goal, different contested events such as Departmental Shirt Design Making Contest, Marketing Video Making Contest, Mural Painting Contest, Search for Mr. And Ms. CNM, and team building activities were competed by seven overall teams coming from the different joint sections in the whole department.

With the established team and contested events, the CNM Day spirit came alive with the CNM Walk, where various teams chanted their yells, echoing throughout the Nursing Building.

The PNMSA Officers led the procession, with the Clinical Instructors bringing it to a close as the last in line. This ignites the camaraderie of every student nurse and Clinical Instructors for making the first part of the event successful by getting the confidence that a Pillarican student must possess.

Patutunguhan : OLPC-C Open House 2024—Welcoming the Pillars of Tomorrow F

or more than sixty years, Our Lady of the Pillar College-Cauayan (OLPC-C) has been a guiding light, embodying a legacy of excellence and community. Like a compass that points to the right path, the school has led countless students toward their destined futures. The 2024 Open House, held last April 26, was not just an event but a journey—a patutunguhan (Destination)for those seeking to find the perfect school environment to grow, learn, and thrive.

Showcasing every color in its every corner, OLPC-C hosted its Open House 2024, extending a warm welcome to students from various private and public schools. The event was designed to immerse visitors in the Pillarican way, offering a glimpse into the school’s rich and diverse culture, academic excellence, and vibrant community. Upon entering through the gates, visitors were immediately enveloped by

the bustling

yet welcoming atmosphere, where a sense of festivity filled the air.

The campus buzzed with energy, alive with a multitude of activities, exhibitions, and performances, each one becomes a reflection of the school’s dedication to nurturing talents and fostering a spirit of unity and excellence.

“There was a cozy and friendly vibe as soon as I came in,” Princess Lei Laforga, a grade 12 student from Naguillan National High School, observed. “The personnel are always helpful and the event is wellorganized, with clear instructions.”

The event began with heartfelt messages from OLPC-C leaders. Dr. Crisanto S. Magaoay, Ph.D., Junior High School Principal who expressed his gratitude to the visitors, encouraging them to explore the unique qualities of the school.

Dr. Franklin L. Soriano, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs, further emphasized OLPC-C’s commitment

to providing competitive and highquality education. With his words, he invited guests to consider the school as the first step toward their future highlighting the institution’s achievements and its ability to shape well-rounded individuals.

Beyond the realm of academics, Pillaricans also shine when it comes to demonstrating their skills and talents. Pillaricans from each department amused the audience with the multifaceted Pillarican talents as they danced cute concepts, P-pop hits, HipHop grooves, and cultural showcase and displayed their skills in martial arts.

In the afternoon session, defying the scorching heat of the sun, the Pillarican Performing Arts Guild (PPAG) resumed the display of outstanding talents with a series of dancing and singing performances.

This vibrant showoff of prowess reflects the school’s commitment to unleashing and nurturing the potentials within the students.

Not only is the school dedicated to academic excellence but also to honing Pillarican skills and talents and shaping well-rounded individuals who are poised to make a meaningful mark inside and outside the school premises across different angles and platforms.

Each department also prepared various booths and exhibits were for the visitors to explore, offering a peek of their accomplishments, activities and programs in their department. A diverse selection of food and drinks was also made available throughout the event.

The College of Nursing and Midwifery demonstrated some fieldrelated procedures like dissecting frogs, assisting with childbirth, and administering injections to some of their guests. Meanwhile, the College of Criminology brought their visitors to an immersive crime scene experience as they showed different attire and tracing

of criminals through fingerprint analysis techniques. Also, the College of Information Technology and Engineering flaunted their thesis and innovations, presenting various high-tech robots like the automatic rice cooker that responds to text commands. The College of Teacher Education, furthermore, impressed with their teaching demonstrations, showcasing as well their creativity in preparing teaching and learning materials and visual aids. The guests also enjoyed complimentary food and drinks from the College of Hospitality Management. Likewise, the College of Accountancy and College of Business Administration featured their accomplishments and events and offered freebies and treats to their visitors.

The all-day bliss continued with a Concert for a Cause featuring the Cup of Joe along with some local bands during the night, electrifying the place with vibrant lights and setting the crowd in tune to fun and

cheerful vibes. After a long wait and the never-ending queue, the Cup of Joe, a six-member Filipino band who continues to gain recognition in the music industry, made the stage frenzy with their hit songs that made the crowd singing, swaying, and screaming their hearts out all at once. Some of their fans also had the chance to meet their idols after the concert.

Furthermore, the lyrics of their hit song, “Patutunguhan,” resonated profoundly with the crowd “Deretso lang, tingin sa hilaga / Abottanaw ang iyong hiwaga / Timog, silangan, at kanluran / Ikaw pa rin ang patutunguhan.” These words mirrored the essence of OLPCC’s mission—guiding its students steadfastly towards their dreams.

Just as the song’s call to persist and focus on one’s destination echoed through the venue, OLPC-C stands as a steadfast compass for its students, steering them confidently toward their own unique paths of

greatness.

Overall, it was indeed a day of unforgettable experience.

“I heartily advise prospective students who are thinking about enrolling in Our Lady of Pillar School to do so if they’re searching for a school that strikes a balance between academic success and personal development,” Laforga remarked.

Also, Kerwyne Quilang, a Grade 12 student of OLPC-C, was filled with enthusiasm as he looked back on the tireless efforts behind the scenes that made the event a success and also gave a reminder to incoming students to seize the opportunity, participate in activities, and discover their potentials the moment they step foot in the school. “OLPC-C is not only a place of excitement and amazement but a home of discovery, learning, and fun.”

Cup of Joe: Inspiring Music and Emot ions at Our Lady of the Pillar College Cauayan

he lively and enchanting melodies of Cup of Joe brought an atmosphere of joy and excitement, call for smiles, and enthusiastic cheers from the audience at Our L a d y of the Pillar

College-Cuayan on April 26, 2024. This captivating performance was a highlight of OLPC-C’s Open House 2024 which was organized through the dedicated efforts of the Supreme Student Council for the academic year 20232024.

The band captivated the whole Pillarican community with their stories, laughter, and unique journey in music.

We had the chance to learn about the band’s name, what inspires their songs, and how they feel about performing for a cause.

Starting with the name “Cup of Joe,” lead guitarist Gab explained its origin: “Actually, the name Cup of Joe, random na suggestion ng name kasi meron yung time na kailangan na naming mag-isip ng final na band name namin para sa isang event tapos bigla na lang

naisip yung name na Cup of Joe and ayun, nag-agree na lang kaming lahat.” It’s a name that has grown in meaning over time and it now holds a special place in their hearts. It serves as a reminder that even the most random ideas can evolve into something special.

Furthermore, the band’s passion for their music was evident, and Rapha, the vocalist, shared, “Lahat naman ng lyrics namin nagmumula sa different types of emotions.” They find inspiration in raw emotions, family, and friends which helps them create songs that resonate deeply with their fans.

One of the highlights of the interview was when Xen, the pianist, talked about the importance of playing for a cause. He said, “It’s nice that we get to express our art

and at the same time help someone. I think that’s the ultimate form of artistry.” It’s this sense of purpose that makes their music even more meaningful.

To end the interview on a high note, Cj, the guitarist, left a message for the fans: “Sana ma-enjoy niyo yung gabing ‘to, sana magiwan kami ng magandang memories sa inyo kasi first time namin, ganun din sa amin, magandang memory maiiwan sana sa amin.” It was clear that the band was grateful for their fans’ support and wanted to give back to the community through their music.

Overall, the band’s inspiring journey is a testament to the power of music to uplift and inspire. The band thanked everyone for their warm welcome, and the publication team ended with a heartfelt message: “Mananatili po ang

tarting college is often filled with excitement and dreams, but for some, like me, the journey can take unexpected turns.

In 2022, I stepped into the world of higher education with confidence, eager to prove that I could handle it all on my own. Little did I know that my journey would test not just my academic capabilities but my inner strength as well.

When I left home to enroll in a university far from the province, I was thrilled to face a new environment.

The thought of new friends, a new school, and the thrill of independence filled me with adrenaline. Even my first meal, a serving of “Pansit Batil Patung,” symbolized the start of something great. The first day came, and it went as expected— smooth, exciting, and full of promise. Everything seemed to be going well, with new friendships blossoming and my performance meeting

my high expectations.

However, things quickly took a turn. The academic challenges, the weight of expectations, and the strain of being away from home began to weigh me down.

I lost my confidence and began doubting my abilities.

The people I trusted to help me cope couldn’t lift the heavy burdens I carried.

I felt alone, battling my inner struggles, and for the first time, I saw the most broken version of myself.

The loneliness, doubt, and depression hit hard. My ego had led me astray, and I found myself stuck, with only my pillows to absorb my tears. I realized that my decision to leave was not what I had envisioned.

The Decision to Return Home After months of battling my mental health, I made the decision to come back home. I re-enrolled at

PILLARICAN feature OLPC-C, where I had initially passed the scholarship exam, realizing that this school, my home, had always been the place for me. I needed to start fresh and rebuild the spirit I had lost along the way.

communication, I pushed through it all. Each obstacle I overcame added to my resilience.

Through all these struggles, I’ve come to appreciate the lessons I’ve learned. I’ve realized that it’s okay to feel not okay, to need time, and to start over when necessary. Hardships truly humble us, teaching us to reflect and grow. As I continue my journey, I hold onto my faith in God, knowing that my path may not be conventional, but it is still one worth walking.

It is an intangible force that uplifts us each time life throws its most painful blows to us. It is the light that guides us in the darkest days. Hope is what we lean on when we feel that things are not going the way we want it to be. It’s the voice within us that tells us to continue even when we think it’s impossible to do so. It’s a daily reminder that no matter how much difficulties we face, there is a purpose. It keeps us resilient, gives us the strength to persevere, and connects us deeply to God. As Pope Francis, on May 9, 2024, promulgated a decree known as a “Bull of Indiction” for the Jubilee Year 2025, Hope becomes its central message. This 8,400word decree, entitled “Spes non Confundit” (“Hope does not disappoint”), was presented to prelates representing the four major Roman basilicas and churches on different continents during a solemn ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis highlighted that in this Jubilee Year, believers are called “to be tangible signs of hope for those experiencing any kind of hardship”. This statement

inspires each of us that even in our own ways, we can be an instrument that embodies God’s unwavering grace to people around us. That even with our world today where almost all of us are facing uncertainty and various forms of struggles, we can be someone who can radiate comfort and peace.

In this decree, Pope Francis urged the faithful to become beacons of hope. He stated, “Hope is not just a fleeting emotion; it is a profound, enduring trust in God’s promises. It is the anchor of our souls, keeping us steadfast amid life’s storms.”

Moreover, Hope plays a vital role in our spiritual growth. It is hope that urges us to trust in the beauty of God’s perfect plan for us amidst life’s difficulties. This trust is what fosters a deeper relationship with Him, enabling us to continue moving forward with Faith and Hope in our hearts.

Furthermore, the Bull of Indiction highlights the importance of community in fostering hope. It calls on believers “to support one another, creating a network of encouragement and strength.” By embodying the spirit of unity and fellowship, we will be able to rise together in prayer and in faith.

Truly, the Jubilee Year 2025, with its theme of hope, is a time for reflection and renewal. It gives us an opportunity to reconnect with the Lord, strengthen our faith, and have a prayerful life. It prepares us to a transformative life, with hope and faith with the Lord as our core.

This decree also invites us to consider the role of hope in our

personal lives. It prompts us to hold onto our faith and continue to hope even in the midst of the struggles we face. With this, we will be able to find courage and strength to move forward.

As we look forward to the Jubilee Year, let us remember that hope is not just a passive expectation but an active force that motivates us to live with purpose and faith. It is a gift from God that sustains us and inspires us to be better, to do better, and to love more deeply.

In this liturgical year, let us rediscover the value of hope and open our hearts to God. Where Dreams Begin and Faith Takes Root “Many are called, but few are chosen.” This Bible verse describes our dedicated heroes inside or even outside the classroom. Many are called to be teachers, but few become one because it is not a job, it is a calling, the noblest profession as they say, because changing one’s life requires a teacher’s heart and soul, and that’s beyond any money can buy.

In every classroom, there stands someone whose influence reaches far beyond the lessons s/he gives, someone who, without us knowing, quietly shapes the course of our lives. These people are our teachers.

They are the chosen few who have answered a noble calling, for teaching isn’t merely a profession; it’s a life-changing vocation.

From the moment we learned to count, to read, to write, our teachers have been beside us. They held our hands as we struggled with the alphabet and guided our minds as we learned how thoughts take shape through words. But beyond lessons from books, they taught us something more, perseverance, curiosity and the courage to keep going when things get tough.

Think back to the classroom. Perhaps there were times when their fierce looks or raised voices left us feeling small. This powerful line from Khaled Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns” speaks about how, even in the face of great struggle, the inner strength and beauty of Afghan women shine brightly.

It reminds us that beneath the surface of pain and hardship, there is a hidden grace. The novel emphasizes this hidden strength through the lives of Mariam and Laila, showing that, despite the challenges they face, hope and resilience always endure.

In the novel, Khaled Hosseini paints a vivid picture of Afghanistan. He contrasts the vibrant, hope-filled streets of pre-war Kabul with the desolate, war-torn city under Taliban rule.

Through their struggles, Hosseini shows how patriarchy leaves deep wounds but also how women’s courage and resilience can challenge and push back against these constraints.

Furthermore, the novel blends the traditional roles assigned to women with their desire for a better life. Laila’s aspirations for education and a different future clash with the conservative expectations imposed by society and Rasheed’s control.

Thus, the story caught the readers’ attention by showcasing the lives and strength of Afghan women which this challenges us, the readers to look beyond the surface-level perceptions and appreciate the depth and resilience within every community. This perspective encourages a more compassionate resolution and understanding of global issues.

The characters in the story face even more challenges because of the war in Kabul.

The city is destroyed during the Taliban era. This makes things even harder for Mariam and Laila as they struggle against the unfair treatment of women and society’s expectations.

They have to deal with violence and

destruction, like having to leave their homes and live in difficult refugee camps. All these add to their pain and make them suffer emotionally and physically. They also experience deep emotional pain and lose their homes because of the war.

This shows how strong they are, even when faced with so much difficulty and tragedy.

Moreover, the novel inspires readers to tackle their own challenges with determination.

The book helps us understand and care about people in tough situations or affected by conflict and encourages us to value the human stories behind global issues. The deepening friendship between Mariam and Laila shows the importance of care and support. It demonstrates how standing together can bring strength and healing.

Also, the characters’ struggles with limited choices make the readers think about their own freedom and the value of choice. It inspires readers to protect and expand these freedoms for themselves and others.

In conclusion, amid adversity in Afghanistan, the novel emphasizes the significant influence of unity and resilience with the words, “But they were not alone. They had each other.”

The intertwining lives of Mariam and Laila serve as a testament to the power of friendship, offering a glimmer of hope amidst challenges. The book conveys a compelling message, highlighting the capacity of the human spirit to radiate compassion and solidarity even in the most daunting circumstances.

Go with the flow?: The Health Outcomes of Flood Have you ever played in the flood like other children do? Was it fun and exciting? Well, some may agree and say that playing in the flood or stagnant waters during or after typhoons are part of their core memories as a child. Swimming and floating in there as if they own a private pool, having fun like there is no tomorrow and just going with the flow of this disastrous event. But would you still say “it is fun” after knowing all the risks it imposes to our health? I beg to disagree.

Flood, as described by the World Health Organization, is a natural disaster causing overflowing water in land areas as a result of heavy rain, rapid snowmelt or storm surge from a tropical cyclone or tsunami.

It is a phenomenon that does not only submerge material things but also causes death to living things.

A disaster that frequently visits the country and wipes out everything, even the hope of people to have a clear and bright future.

According to the 2023 World Disaster Risk Index, Philippines ranked first in the most-disasterprone country in the world, experiencing natural events such as earthquake, drought and flood.

As these disasters frequently visits the country, Filipinos became immune to it, allowing themselves to intentionally submerge in these dangerous waters of flood all because they wanted to have some fun- the famous Filipino culture where the country’s people happily face their problems. Some examples of these include children playing in the floodwater and even teenagers or adults who should have known better but still do it for contents in TikTok or Facebook reels. The question is, is it worth the risks? Definitely, it is not. Therefore, here are some reasons why people should be mindful of the effects of flood, especially to our health: 1. Flood is a source of waterborne and vector borne diseases. Flood does not only cause death through drowning. As stated by the World Health Organization, it is also a house of waterborne diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, and the most common leptospirosis that are brought by water contamination.

Additionally, the stagnant water from flood becomes a breeding site for mosquitoes which then produces vector borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and yellow fever that increase health risks on people.

Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).

2. Flood increases risk for infection. The contaminated water from the flood contains bacteria that may cause cutaneous, respiratory or gastrointestinal infections.

Cutaneous infection includes skin rashes or soft tissue infections while respiratory infections include cough, colds, influenza and pneumonia.

On the other hand, examples of gastrointestinal infections include cholera, shigellosis and enteric fever.

Diarrheal disease which is the third leading cause of death in children under 5 years old, according to WHO is also caused by drinking contaminated water.

Moreover, Tetanus, a nervous system disease that is characterized by lockjaw and muscle spasms is also one of the common diseases that results from bacterial infection which individuals often get when submerging in flood with an open wound.

3. Flood affects mental health.

Sometimes, people do not really worry about flood when it is there since it became a normal event for them. However, the aftermath of a flood says otherwise as it often causes distress to the people.

Without proper coping mechanisms, people may develop anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder especially if they have experienced traumatic events such as losing someone or surviving alone in a disaster. Worrying about the future as they face disruptions in basic necessities such as food, shelter and other supplies may also cause heartbreak to the affected individuals, thus increasing risk for developing mental problems.

To prevent the following flood health risks, the following are the things we need to do to protect ourselves from a flood, according to WHO (2024): 1. Familiarize yourself with the community’s evacuation route and warning signals. Knowing the safe zones in your area will help you save your life and others.

Promote good hygienic practices and safe food preparation techniques. To prevent or reduce the risk of outbreaks of waterborne diseases, ensure that food and drinking water are clean. Practice proper hand hygiene when in contact with floodwater, as well as before and after eating. Throw away any food that has come in contact in floodwater.

3. Avoid walking or driving through flooded areas and standing water. There are several dangers that floodwater can bring including waterborne diseases or even
