January has ended just like that and now the love month has come. Each of us has always considered February special as it brings different waves of emotions, affection, or excitement. But what does that bring to all of us? Is it happiness, disappointment, or pain or is it merely ordinary?
Each of us is in a unique situation. Some may be luckier than most. But you know what is common among us? Either we are in a bad or good situation - we all are alive. We are breathing, we are present, and we are given the chance to enjoy the wonders around us. Isn’t it more than enough reason for us to celebrate life?
This month is customarily celebrated with red roses and chocolates, stuffed toys, and fancy dinners. But haven’t we realized that these are just temporary? What is paramount is sharing the Love. To share love with our family and friends is ubiquitous. There are also other forms of love like our love for our pets, hobbies, possessions, and even occasions. What we always tend to forget is the one that matters and the one that must come as the main priority above all else—the love for oneself.
Love for ourselves is the very root of all the love in this world. Before we start showering others with love, care, and concern, have we questioned ourselves - have I loved myself enough? We tend to forget to do this, contemplating that others are more important than ourselves. Yes, it indeed gives us great joy to share happiness outwards. But always remember it is even more gratifying to radiate happiness from within. It gives others hope rather than dependency. It gives them inspiration rather than intimidation. Most importantly, you are teaching them goodness and love, rather than being reserved.
We have been here in the United Arab Emirates for maybe a few years and longer for some. But all of us have one common purpose of doing so. To provide a good and comfortable life for our families back home. Certainly, most of them are already experiencing it. However, always keep in mind, that without you, all of what they have may vanish in an instant. Let us not forget that we deserve a good bunch of TLC (Tender Loving Care). It is not a grave sin to reward yourself because you earn it. You are obliged to love yourself. Nothing must hinder you from doing it. Never give up, if you are tired – rest. After all, we are humans.
Always Love Yourself, Engineers!

PICE-UAE Committee on Membership (COME) presented its COME Talk 3.0 with the sole purpose of helping our fellow engineering professionals the idea on how to come up and prepare a cash flow forecast. It has become relevant now in the construction industry that we engineers should be able to at the least have an idea on how to forecast the cost of a certain project.
With our ever-ecstatic technical speaker for that said date, Engineer Enrico Chavez. He was able to relay significant information on how to prepare cash flow for young professionals and mid-level career engineers. He expounded the mere definition of knowing how to be ready on giving a heads-on report if ever the times comes that it is necessary.
The participants got the idea on knowing what factors are there to consider in cash flow forecasting and what were the parameters to utilize. It was quite a webinar session that was filled with numerical iteration. Engr. Enrico Chavez even held a hands-on session on how to formulate the excel sheet to keep track the cash flow of the sample given.
It was indeed a fruitful session as it was both beneficial and absolutely informative to the young professionals who were still in the process of grasping the system of the construction industry. Each project has a significant value that each engineer should be able to consider.
Now that times have changed into a fast-paced environment, professionals should now move with how quick technology is pacing forward. The details and formula that Engr. Enrico Chavez gave the participants a new perspective that being a civil engineer not only falls into the category of literally being in the construction but there is also another venue for us to venture our expertise, as we are not
limited only into the structural realm but also the financial management aspect of a certain project is crucial to be factored in preparing the entirety of the necessary procedures.
The PICE-UAE Committee on Membership would like to thank most especially the speaker, Engr. Enrico Chavez for lending us his time and expertise. The team would also like to relay its gratitude to all the key people who played roles in the event, and of course the participants in which the event would not be possible without them.

from Engr. Mary Grace D. Matutinao (PICE-UAE Member)
PICE-UAE Committee on Membership (COME)
paved the way for the participants to find relevance in knowing how to find the cause and effects of certain circumstances in each project. Problems in every project have become a normal situation wherein engineers find a way on how to resolve it and find the root cause to prevent its repetition in the future.
Engr. Blesil D. Apduhan, the technical speaker for the topic “Root Cause Analysis” prepared a presentation for the attendees which focused on knowing how to find the source of how the problems keep on persisting during handling of various projects.
He opened up the objective is to not only find the cause of the problem but also to find a way on how to resolve it and prevent it from happening again. He implicated that factors that cause these could come in multiple numbers, that’s why engineers should be able to gear up and be prepared to take on these types of situations.
There were also advantages and benefits that we gathered from our speaker in knowing how to find the root cause of problems. Engineer Blesil mentioned
that if there would be less rework and backlogs, it would mean that there would be more profit. Another is that communication could be enhanced throughout the circulation and phase of the project.
Participants were also able to interact with the speaker at the middle of the presentation wherein he gathered different attendees to share their point of view on why root cause analysis is important and how did they incorporate this procedure to their most challenging situation that they have faced throughout their career.
Everyone in the webinar got a treat from the knowledge and experience that the participants shared during this session. The peak of the presentation showed the standard
steps and processes to address the problems. The first one was to define and identify correctly the problem, as it was the determining factor on how would an engineer categorize this type of circumstance. Second is to implement and start doing research on what would be the different ways on how to address the problem. Third is the analysis phase wherein the project manager would spend most of his/her time to scrutinize the problem and solve it. Fourth is to find the root cause after analyzing it, as it would come clear during the analysis phase. Fifth is the corrective phase, wherein steps would be laid out on how to correct the issue. Lastly is the validation phase to conclude whether the steps were effective and can be used also for future reference.
Indeed, the PICE-UAE Committee on Membership would like to extend its gratitude to Engr. Blesil Apduhan for sharing his expertise on the matter of root cause analysis and also to the unwavering support of the participants which reached at about 300+ in numbers that keep on showing up whenever the PICE-UAE would hold its usual COME Talk.

PICE-UAE Committee on Education (COED) wanted to highlight that Sustainable infrastructure development is crucial to address the growing global challenges of climate change and resource depletion.
During the design phase of sustainable infrastructure projects, engineers like Engr. Hero Infante play a vital role in integrating innovative and eco-friendly solutions across various sectors. For instance, in roads construction, the utilization of recycled concrete aggregates and asphalt not only reduces the demand for new resources but also minimizes waste generation. Incorporating such sustainable practices not only conserves natural resources but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional construction materials.
Furthermore, in water and wastewater infrastructure, sustainable design approaches such as using glass reinforced plastic (GRP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) manholes instead of conventional concrete ones showcase the commitment
to environmental sustainability. The implementation of reed bed treatment plants for sewage treatment and oil interceptors for stormwater management highlights the importance of protecting water bodies from pollution. By utilizing treated wastewater for irrigation purposes and employing efficient irrigation systems like drip and subsurface irrigation, the overall water consumption can be minimized while ensuring agricultural productivity. Engr. Hero Infante’s expertise in sustainable infrastructure design not only promotes environmental conservation but also fosters resilient and resource-efficient communities for the future.
The execution phase of a sustainable infrastructure project involving right of way and utility disposition requires meticulous planning and coordination
to ensure the efficient use of land resources while minimizing environmental impact. Engr. Angelito Castillo, a renowned expert in sustainable infrastructure projects, emphasizes the importance of integrating the right of way design with utility disposition to optimize space utilization and minimize conflicts during the construction phase. By strategically planning the placement of utilities such as water, electricity, telecommunications, and gas pipelines within the right of way, the project can enhance its overall sustainability and resilience.
Integrated Water Management and Energy systems play a crucial role in the sustainable development
of infrastructure projects. Engr. Angelito Castillo emphasizes the need for incorporating innovative solutions for managing water resources efficiently, such as rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and sustainable drainage systems. Similarly, energyefficient technologies, renewable energy sources, and smart grid systems can help reduce the carbon footprint of infrastructure projects and enhance their long-term environmental sustainability. By integrating these systems into the design and execution phase of infrastructure projects, Engr. Angelito Castillo envisions a future where cities are not only efficient and resilient but also environmentally friendly and sustainable for generations to come.

Here are some members who shared their love stories - love with God, love tested by distance, and love despite of nationality.
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, we believe that when a couple gets married in the temple and makes promises with God, the marriage is sealed for eternity.
Ako, syempre yun yung goal ko, maging eternity ang family ko. Nakilala ko si Ann [my wife], bata pa kami and parehas kami ng high school. Although lower batch sya, we became friends dahil same Church. So kahit nag college, I went to Mapua tapos sya University of the East, we hangout through Church activities. Also, during ng college days our friendship comprises hanging out and that i was spending time to help her on her math subjects, including Calculus. Nung grumaduate ako, habang nag work ako, I continue to help her sa school subjects nya.
After ko mag take ng board exam, I served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. It’s a voluntary service where we get to serve and teach people about Jesus Christ and how to come closer to Him. We get assigned where we serve, and ako na-assign ako sa Davao. Sa 2 years na yun, hindi nawala communication namin. Wala pa dati email, so for 2 years, nagsusulat kami letters sa isa’t isa.
Pag uwi ko, we went on proper dates. Isa sa mga nakatulong din ay yung closeness ko sa family nya, especially sa parents nya. Nung kinausap ko papa nya about marriage, tinanong ako about plans ko. I like planning things, nung time na yun, alam ko na yung plan for the next few years. I shared it with him, and supportive naman si papa. I asked her to marry me and on December 7, 1996, we made promises with God to love each other and be together for time and all eternity.
Now, we are still together with 3 daughters. Still happy and in love. Striving to live up to the promises we made 27 years ago, to be together forever and teaching our daughters the importance of choosing the right person.
“ “
...we made promises with God to love each other and be together for time and all eternity...
During my college days, my wife and I were introduced by a common friend during a small gathering back in 1996 which I become captivated her.
I was a graduating student back then and we are celebrating one of my friend’s graduation in college. At that time, wala pa maayos na cellular phone and medyo busy ako kaya naputol ang amin communication but after 2 years, we met again. BAck then, I already had a job as an Engineer. I was assigned to multiple sites in different parts of the Philippines which did not stop us from meeting every weekend. Despite the odds, after a few years of effort in the local LDR, we decided to get married, knowing the facts that we are still young and most of the time, we will be apart because of the nature of my work.
Two children were given to us, and our dream was to provide them comfortable lives. Knowing that our situation would be difficult since we came from the poor families in the Bicol Region, I decided to become OFW in 2007. That was the most difficult LDR of all, knowing that most kinds of relationships fail due to long separations ranging from 1 to 2 years, depending on the contract.
Unlike other couples who brought their own families with them, we decided to be separated to give some room for financial gain by working separately - me as OFW and my wife as an employee of Local companies in the Philippines.
“ “
Relationship will bloom through perseverance, faith and trust, and don’t rely only on love.
We were giving each other faith, trust, and constant communication kahit mahirap noon. Overseas calls are expensive. At least with Yahoo Messenger we have a meaningful conversation every week.
Like other couples, we have been into problems such the likes as extended family issues, handling of finances, internal strife, etc. Above all these challenges, my wife had been patient, always praying, keeping the faith and trust, always keeping the communication open, and keeping the family intact in all cases. This is the main reason we surpassed the silver wedding anniversary. Our relationship still strong and growing.
The negative side of LDR is that I had sacrificed the most imporatnt events with my children growing up. Moreover, I had the feeling of not being part of the family you created and just a mere provider. Overcoming this challenge is the most difficult test of being on this type of LDR.
The positive side of LDR is allowing more time for the relationship to be more mature, be more patience to each other, look forward to the future, and aim always for the prize.
Finally, relationship will bloom through perseverance, faith, and trust and don’t rely only on love.
It was a cold day with the whispers of the Christmas winds; the day my feet landed in the land known as “Pearl of the Orient Seas”, the land of Kabayans. Few months before the prime of the pandemic when my husband went for vacation in the Philippines and decided to introduce me to his family in person. My heart was full of excitement but at the same time, it was trembling.
We just passed the immigration and reached the exit when in distant, I can see someone waving their hands with signs welcoming me. I was so “WOOOW”. I felt like I was a celebrity.
By the way, I’m Tamaraa, a Syrian married to a Filipino. Amazing, right? I will tell you how my love life goes on with a Filipino guy as we all knew that it is so uncommon to see a Filipino guy married to other nationality because it is usually a Filipina with other nationality.
While we were heading to my husband home, everybody inside the car was staring at me and to our daughters and I’m wondering why. My husband told me, it is normal since they cannot believe he has girl like me. “Tito, is she an actress or somewhat a model?”, asked by his niece.
I could feel that they were happy to see their uncle married with someone like me. There was an instance when they called our daughters like a barbie doll. His family welcomed me warmheartedly as they continued to prank him by asking me some funny questions. We stopped by on a well-known fast-food
outlet, Jollibee. They assured to me that the taste of Jollibee in Philippines was so different and much yummier than in UAE. Indeed, our daughters liked it. Our daughters found playmates with my husband’s nieces. The entire trip on our way to his home was full of fun chatting.
His place was awesome, very calm that where you could hear was only a sound of a crickets. There you can have a star gazing while sipping the coldness and freshness of the wind. It was a three-hour travel from the capital. Hence, the nearby airport was not yet operational due to some rehabilitation.
I’m Tamaraa, a Christian-Syrian. I’m a civil/structural engineer in profession, but currently working as engineering manager in a medium scale company in Abu Dhabi. I’m a single mother when I met my Filipino husband. He used to call me “Holly Molly” as according to him, I’m very much alike to that actress.
After my graduation, I was arranged to marry with my father’s colleague, a military man in my country. I was just 22 that time and somehow, I liked the guy who seemed to be looking okay and, I trusted my father who was also a military man.
At first, he was okay, but not when my dad suddenly passed away just after my three-month married life. All the good impressions with this guy were gone. Just six months of our marriage became a lifetime hell to me. It was when he hit me on my face that I decided
to file a divorce which the court granted. Right after I got the papers, I flew to Bahrain for a job offer. I did not know at that time that I was already 3 month pregnant. I kept it to myself, to my sister and to my mom. I delivered the baby in Bahrain without letting my ex know about this.
After my first project in Bahrain, I got a good offer in Abu Dhabi. I decided to go here since my sister and her family was already in Dubai. My mom and my daughter lived with me but every weekend, they were going to my sister’s home.
It was in 2018 when I learned from my cousin that my ex had died on an encounter with the rebels. He left some amount for me and for my daughter.
I was shocked to know that he found out about my daughter. And from there, I started feeling depressed. Those happennings in the past came back to me. I felt sad every time I was seeing a happy couple. I cried when I was alone. That was the moment when my husband now got into the scene.
We were workmates. He used to scold me every time I proposed a value engineering or a design change. He was kind of ‘masungit’ guy and suplado. I hated him
so much. He was 5 years older than me.
After a month of the news, I still had this doubt if my ex really passed away. My cousin confirmed to me which caused me to cry for an unknown reason of either I was sad or relieved.
I did not notice Vince who was at my back. He suddenly handed me over a tissue box. He asked me if I was okay, and I said I was just fine. He took away all the documents that he was about to clarify and said he would do it the other day.
He offered me a coffee. I did not have a choice. He already put it in front of me. I was so depressed that I asked him if he can stay and talk for a while, and that’s the time I forgot everything and opened to him about my life. He patiently listened to me and sometimes threw a joke which made me laugh.
Time passed and we didn’t even notice it’s already 7PM. He bid goodbye assuring I was fine already. I immediately offered him a ride so I could drop him off as a sign of gratitude. And yes, he didn’t refuse. I was in the elevator with the guy I hated but seemed to be nice.
His accommodation was ahead of me so he just said it was fine with him until our building. He would just walk and buy some stocks. He bid goodbye and asked me to be careful and everything would be okay.
The following day, I came early in the office and to my surprise, Vince was already there wherein he never come earlier than me even once. He bought some Karak Tea and a piece of cake. From that moment, we became friends. I used to offer him a ride and we had a lot of topics discussed while on the way home. I felt comfortable with him. I always caught him staring at me which seemed to be our feelings was mutual.
One day, he went for vacation and it was cut short as he was not allowed to take the full month due to current work load in the office. Actually, I asked the HR to allow him for only a short leave. However, I became guilty of it.
On his leave, I had missed him that I used to snap on his table. I missed his jokes. I missed the coffees and cakes. I missed his smile. I missed the morning where he was there to greet me. I missed the time he opens a door for me. I was asking myself of what is happening to me.
On the Mother’s Day celebrations, I was surprised when I came at the office with flowers and chocolates on my table. I immediately went to his office but to no avail, he was not there. I felt disappointed and just
turned around going back on my room. Suddenly, he appeared in front of me and said “BULAGA”.
I trembled and hit him on his chest. We were like teenagers flirting each other on that moment. I asked him if he was courting me. He did not reply but he just tapped his head and smile on me. I even teased him that he really liked me causing to turn his face red.
I became conscious of my outfit and started trying to wear some dress which showed some skin. I caught him looking at me from time to time. I felt like I was a teenage girl who was flirting some boy who cannot show his true feelings.
I forgot my boundaries as we came from different nationality. All I care was I was happy with him. Whenever we discussed something job related issues, I tried to flirt with him by making my blouse a bit wabbly and I was correct; he cannot focus on the topic as he was distracted of what I was doing. Till we found ourselves dating secretly, making coffee time as an excuse.
We used to dine in a restaurant where privacy was observed. There was a famous Chinese restaurant and Arabic restaurant that have a cubicle where client can dine-in privately where we used to visit. I used to sit beside him uninvitedly. And from there, I would grab his palm and started to caress it.
It was Wednesday, a day before a long weekend due to long holiday. My brother in-law asked me if he could pick up my mom and my daughter earlier, at least after lunch, so they could attend a celebration somewhere in Dubai with their friends as I still had a meeting to attend. I agreed and decided just to follow at night after the work.
It was 4PM, and upon the start of the meeting, a strong storm hit the city with a heavy rain and winds causing to stop the meetin,g and let everybody to go home. He was already outside waiting for a bus when I asked him to get inside my car as I was heading on his way home.
I needed to stopp by on my apartment to get some things, but upon reaching my building, another blows of the storm hit the city. At this time, it was scary as it turned the sky dark and some glass windows flew. So, I asked him to stand by and let the storm passed. I asked him to come with me and, at least, to have some coffee.
At first, he refused, but I insisted till he agreed. I prepared the coffee for two; and we had it, sat together and I grabbed again his hand and started caressing it. I laid on the couch with my head on his lap. He touched my face and my hair. I felt crazy of what he was doing. I felt hot which I liked. I was suffocated by my blouse; making me start to unbutton the top button of it. What
I did not expect was the next thing he did. He touched my lips. The other hand continued to unbutton the remaining buttons of my blouse. I started to swallow my saliva and to feel the goosebumps.
He finished his coffee and bid to go as the surroundings was already calm even still there was a rain.
Upon shutting the door, I deeply breathed thinking what might happen because of what happened. Still, I felt hot and aroused of what he did. It was almost ten years since a guy touched my body. This time, I really liked it. I took a shower due to the rain water and the smell of cigarette I absorbed during the meeting, as well as to cool down myself.
I was almost done when the door bell rang. So, after I wiped my body, I just grabbed a shirt and a short (no undies) and rushed to the door. It was Vince! I wondered why he came back. He said he forgot his mobile phone and maybe, he dropped it in the couch, or in the counter, so I let him in and guided to the kitchen and then to the couch and he found it.
We walked towards the door. I told him to wait to change my clothes so I could drop him off on his apartment on my way to Dubai. He suddenly grabbed my hand, pulled me back and all I remembered is his lips already touching my lips staying there for long. I felt hot and my heart beat fast. I felt something I did not feel before. He hugged me and I hugged him back. He then lifted me to my room, and everything happened. I did not care what the world might say but I loved him and I surrendered, Damascus has fallen.
I sent SMS to my sister that I would just go early in the morning since it was dangerous to drive due to storm. The truth was I was already struck by the storm and enjoyed the lightnings it brought. He then hugged me and we fell asleep.
I was enjoying our hidden relationship that sometimes, when our conversation in the office turned into spicy one, we sneaked out during lunch and eat some savoury dinner.
I was excited whenever the weekends came as we are only half day during Friday; the other half, we spent it with love and fire. In my married life, I never felt
excited during the weekend. My ex-husband never became sweet or passionate with our relationship.
After a year of our relationship, my mom noticed something that led her to ask me privately. She asked me if I had an affair, or if I was having a relationship or if I was dating someone.
Of course, I tried to deny it, but before I finished what I had to say, she pointed me something at the lower back of my neck. Oh, my! Vince had left a mark on my neck on our last night duo and I did not notice it. Now, I was cornered by my Mom, so I admitted it and explained to her the situation. She understood, asked me to bring Vince and introduced to them which Vince really appreciated and said he was waiting for that moment.
And right after our dinner with my family, Vince proposed to marry me. He did not have the great diamond as the other did, but his sincerity was the one I wanted most.
I became 1-month preggy during our wedding; he definitely put the guarantee before the certificate. I was gifted of two children by him. Now, we are living as we are always newlyweds. He is indeed the man a girl desired for her life, and I am fortunate to have him.
