MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Best Time to Honor our Mothers!

Labour Day and Mother’s Day are two important holidays that are celebrated for different reasons, but there is a strong connection between the two when it comes to the sacrifices that mothers make for their families.

Labour Day is a day to honor and celebrate the contributions of workers and the labor movement. It is a day to recognize the hard work and dedication of those who have helped build our country and make it what it is today. On the other hand, Mother’s Day is a day to honor and celebrate the mothers in our lives who have sacrificed so much to raise us and take care of us.

While the two holidays may seem unrelated at first glance, there are actually many parallels between the sacrifices that workers make in their jobs and the sacrifices that mothers make for their families. Both workers and mothers often put their own needs and desires aside in order to provide for others. They work long hours, often in difficult conditions, and sometimes for little pay or recognition.

Mothers, in particular, make countless sacrifices for their children. They give up sleep, personal time, and sometimes even their own dreams in order to care for their families. They work tirelessly to provide for their children, often going without so that their children can have what they need. They are there for their children every step of the way, offering love, support, and guidance no matter what.

Workers also make sacrifices for their jobs and their families. They work long hours, sometimes in dangerous or strenuous conditions, in order to provide for their loved ones. They may miss out on important moments with their families in order to meet the demands of their jobs. They may have to juggle multiple responsibilities, often feeling stressed and overwhelmed by the pressures of work and home life.

By connecting Labour Day with Mother’s Day, we can see the common thread of sacrifice that runs through both holidays. We can recognize and appreciate the hard work and dedication of both workers and mothers, and acknowledge the sacrifices that they make on a daily basis. We can show our gratitude for all that they do, and honor them for their selflessness and commitment to their families and communities.

In conclusion, Labour Day and Mother’s Day may be celebrated for different reasons, but they both highlight the sacrifices that workers and mothers make for their families. By connecting the two holidays, we can see the common thread of sacrifice that runs through both, and appreciate the hard work and dedication of those who give so much of themselves for others. Let us honor and celebrate the workers and mothers in our lives, recognizing and valuing the sacrifices that they make each and every day.

Pioneering a Greener Future: ASEP-RSC-UAE and PICE-UAE’s Dynamic 2nd Technical Collaboration Seminar

The recent 2nd Technical Collaboration Seminar, spearheaded by the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines Regional Sub-Committee -United Arab Emirates (ASEP-RSCUAE) in collaboration with the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, UAE Chapter (PICE_ UAE), concluded with resounding success. Held on May 5, 2024, at Novotel Al Bustan Abu Dhabi, UAE, the event focused on the theme: “Sustainable Structural Design & Construction for a Greener Future.” This gathering marked a significant milestone in advancing sustainable engineering practices, bringing together experts and stakeholders from various regions to share insights and strategies.

The seminar was dynamically moderated by Engr. Sheena Mecaydor and Engr. Roland Solmerin Jr, whose high energy set a vibrant tone for the event. The proceedings began with Christian and Islamic invocation from Engr. Richard Licardo and Engr. Salibel Jatulla respectively. Accordingly, it was followed by Host Country UAE and the Philippine national anthem.

Introduced by Engr. Janica Pauline N. Oquendo, warm welcome message was delivered by PICE UAE 2024 President, Engr. Sheryl Dela Peña. Her address underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting sustainability within the engineering community of civil and structural engineering. This was trailed by an inspiring keynote address message from Ambassador of the Philippines to the United Arab Emirates His Excellency Alfonso Ferdinand A. Ver, who highlighted the critical importance

of sustainable practices in structural design and construction, urging engineers to embrace innovation and environmental responsibility.

Distinguished Guests and Key Presentations

The seminar was graced by distinguished guests from the Philippines, including Engr. Mark Elson C. Lucio, 2024 President of ASEP Inc., and Engr. Ernesto Q. Malicad Jr., ASEP Board of Director and Membership Committee head. Engr. Lucio’s inspirational message highlighted the significant contributions and sacrifices of Filipino civil engineers and structural engineers working in the UAE. He acknowledged the continuous professional development of ASEP RSC UAE members, whose expertise significantly shapes the UAE skyline. He expressed deep appreciation for their dedication to enhancing their skills and knowledge, thereby contributing to the advancement of sustainable structural design and construction.

Engr. Malicad’s technical presentation focused on a case study from the Philippines, addressing the “Development of Wind Loading Analysis for Solar

PV Projects & Exploring the ‘Dark Side’ of Solar Power.” His discussion underscored the importance of streamlined guidelines for analysing and designing PV systems, increasing awareness about high wind speed risks, and promoting cost-effective wind tunnel testing. He emphasized the need for clear and efficient procedures for permitting and designing PV systems to ensure safety and reliability in the face of extreme weather conditions.

In-depth Technical Sessions

Engr. Alfredo M. Pagulayan, ASEP Regional Coordinating Committee (ASEP-RCC) Chairman, provided a comprehensive overview of regulatory and certification frameworks for sustainability in structural design and construction. He detailed the benefits of green building certifications and government incentives for sustainable construction. His presentation emphasized the importance of compliance with building standards and the positive impact of government policies on promoting sustainable practices.

Engr. Royce Agabas, a senior structural engineer working in UAE , introduced the seminar’s central theme with a compelling discussion on sustainable structural design and construction. He emphasized the essential role of sustainability in improving the built and natural environment. Engr. Agabas called for the construction industry to adopt advanced technologies to reduce energy needs and environmental impact, advocating for a holistic approach that integrates multidisciplinary collaboration.

Engr. Ariel A. Bantugan a passionately senior structural engineer from UAE discussed the urgent need for engineers to reduce carbon emissions by using sustainable materials in structural design and construction. He highlighted the vital role of structural engineers in mitigating the ongoing increase in carbon emissions. Engr. Bantugan stressed that achieving global net-zero targets is feasible through resilience and commitment to sustainable design and construction projects.

Engr. Jubert R. Sy currently the senior structural engineer from New Zealand explored the “Principles of Sustainable Structural Design: Reducing Embodied

Carbon.” He challenged engineers to leverage advanced tools and guidelines to minimize embodied carbon in construction projects. His presentation covered the impacts and sources of embodied carbon and the methods for calculating and reducing it in structural materials.

Engr. Sonny Andalis, Senior Executive BIM Manager based in Singapore, presented on advanced tools and techniques for structural design, including the Concrete Usage Index (CUI) and Buildability Score (BScore). He highlighted the importance of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) and the benefits of computational Building Information Modelling (BIM). His discussion emphasized the need for efficient and sustainable design practices that enhance construction quality and reduce waste.

Innovative Approaches and Future Trends

Engr. Jayakrishnan Puthiya Veettill the current Regional Technical Manager of Macaferri Mideast discussed the sustainability benefits of double-twisted wire mesh and geosynthetic solutions. His presentation demonstrated how these solutions improve sustainability in projects without compromising traditional engineering requirements. He provided a case study of the Museum of the Future in Dubai, showcasing the successful implementation of these technologies in supporting sustainable landscape design.

Engr. Eric O. Biscocho Senior Structural Engineer/ Resident Engineer and current ASEP-RSC-UAE 2024 Vice Chairman, presented case studies from the USA, emphasizing the benefits of mass timber construction for sustainability goals. He showcased successful implementations in cities like Milwaukee, Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Vancouver, highlighting mass timber’s potential for broader adoption. Engr. Biscocho discussed the structural resilience of mass timber and its compliance with building codes, advocating for its use in diverse construction projects.

Engr. Jay Animas working as Design Manager in Saudi Arabia addressed the challenges and opportunities in adopting sustainable structural design and construction. He presented the comprehensive benefits of using precast insulated walls to reduce greenhouse

gas emissions and enhance energy efficiency. Engr. Animas illustrated how these innovative solutions contribute to the overall well-being of building occupants while addressing environmental concerns.

Engr. Manuel F. Papasin, PICE-UAE immediate past president now based in Australia and working as Senior Geotechnical Engineers focused on future trends in sustainable structural design, specifically geotechnical solutions for sustainable development. He stressed the importance of optimizing resource utilization, minimizing environmental impact, and enhancing resilience to natural hazards. His presentation included case studies demonstrating the effective application of geotechnical engineering principles to achieve sustainable outcomes.

Engr. Shaik Mohammad Hussain Shaik Shaiksha Vali a technical Engineering Working in Tech Assist company introduced the sustainable features of IDEA StatiCa for steel connections, showcasing the latest advancements and optimizations. He emphasized the importance of using advanced software tools to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of structural designs.

Conclusion and Acknowledgements

The seminar lead by program director Engr. Blesil Apduhan, PICE-UAE 2024 2nd Vice- President featured engaging Q&A sessions and open forums, allowing participants to interact with the presenters and delve deeper into the technical topics discussed. Various gifts items were given away to the seminar attendees during after technical presentation including the winners of two pairs of Air Jordan Shoes which won by Engr. Louie James T. Bendanillo and Engr. Ernesto Q. Malicad Jr respectively. The District Toastmasters Annual Conference (DTAC) 2024 held in Muscat, Oman on May 10-11, 2024, was a momentous occasion for the PICE-UAE & Fellows Toastmasters Club as they clinched multiple prestigious awards, showcasing their commitment to excellence in communication, leadership, and member development.

One of the club’s crowning achievements was receiving the Hall of Fame Gold Award with a perfect 20 points in the Dashboard and concluded as one of the two (2) clubs to accomplish the highest points. PICE-UAE signs MoU with The Filipino Times in the 10th Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition (PPIE)

PICE-UAE Chapter attended and supported the 10th Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition (PPIE) at The Bristol Hotel in Deira, Dubai on May 11 and 12, 2024.

The PPIE showcases most of the enticing property projects by a known and big property developer in the Philippines offering a variety of opportunities and empowerment for OFWs in the United Arab Emirates enabling them to achieve their dreams of property ownership and financial security.

Discounts are also given for those investors who booked the properties in the venue, which gives some opportunity for some OFWs willing to invest in this segment.

Additionally, the Philippine Economic and Investment Summit (PEIS) is back for its second edition at the 10th PPIE, offering a valuable opportunity for both seasoned investors and those eager to learn about investing in the Philippines to engage and participate. At that event, PEIS delivered an even more enriching experience, catering to both seasoned Filipino and foreign investors looking to expand their portfolios, and newcomers eager to delve into the world of investing in the Philippines. On this event, The #investPilipinas #investPPIE campaign brought along 27 Filipino businesses and professional organizations to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PPIE organizer, New Perspective Media (NPM) Group, through its Filipino publication, The Filipino Times, the largest Filipino media outside the Philippines, which include the Philippines Institute of Civil Engineers – United Arab Emirates Chapter.

Booth and Segments for Filipino communities were also present at the venue, where the PICE-UAE chapter visit, meet, and greet such as the likes of, the Philippines Partnerships Circle, Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Bayanihan Council Abu Dhabi, Philippine Business Council – Dubai & Northern Emirates; and Filipino Social Club – Dubai and some of them took part in the summit where they shared valuable insights to their fellow Overseas Filipinos.

For two days, PPIE will highlight a diverse range of investment, financial, and business solutions and services, along with more than 50 keynotes and forums from over 50 industry experts and corporate leaders from top property developers in the Philippines, as well as UAE-based businesses and organizations.

Investing in Agriculture: PICE-UAE learns AgriBusiness

The representatives of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers-UAE Chapter (PICE-UAE) have collaborated with the Bayanihan Council for the agriculture seminar held on 12th of May, 2024.

This seminar aims to create sustainable livelihood and economic opportunities for the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in the Philippines. The Department of Agriculture is currently working and collaborating with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on government program initiatives for the OFW’s. This makes the investing in Agriculture to be more accessible than ever before. The topics include:

• Philippine Agribusiness Investment Opportunities

• From Grass to Meat: Potential of Beef Cattle, Goat, and Sheep

• Business Opportunities in Fisheries

• Agricultural Training and Extension Services

• From Idea to Enterprise: A Comprehensive Guide to Starting Your Own Agribusiness; and

• Credit and Financing Opportunities for OFWs in Agriculture and Fisheries.

This advocacy might be a way for Filipinos, not just to save money, but to invest for a favorable return towards great financial and wealth gain.

Grateful and Blessed: PICE-UAE Chapter’s Thanksgiving Mass

On May 12, 2024, the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) UAE Chapter gathered for a Thanksgiving Mass during the 12 noon Tagalog Mass at St. Therese Church. Celebrated by Fr. Troy Delos Santos, OFM Cap., this special event was attended by active members, including President Engr. Sheryl G. Dela Pena and the Board of Directors.

This Mass, considered the highest form of worship, was an opportunity for our organization to pray earnestly and express our gratitude to our Father Almighty for the successful events of PICE-UAE that culminated within the first quarter of the year.

The Mass coincided with the Solemnity of the Ascension of Jesus Christ, marking the 40th day after the Resurrection of our Lord, known to many as Easter Sunday. The liturgy was filled with beautiful hymns, heartfelt prayers, and spiritual readings that resonated deeply with everyone present.

Fr. Troy’s homily inspired the Faithful to continue the mission of Jesus Christ and to deepen our faith in God. After the Prayer of the Faithful, each member participated in the offertory procession, contributing their love offerings for the church’s charity works. A special prayer was recited by a young girl dedicated to all mothers, followed by the sprinkling of holy water by the Priest, in observance of Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

Fr. Troy concluded the Mass with a heartwarming prayer and blessing to all parishioners. The Thanksgiving Mass was a beautiful reminder of the importance of coming together in gratitude and faith. It strengthened our bonds and renewed our commitment to our mission in our esteemed organization.

We are immensely grateful to everyone who took the time to participate and made this gathering a memorable and spiritually enriching experience.

Au-some Basketball with WYZE: PICE-UAE plays for World Autism Awareness

The PICE UAE Chapter recently participated in an event organized by WYZE Entertainment and Event Management Establishment, led by Ms. Arlene F. Estayani.

WYZE is known for providing recreational services and organizing various events, with a notable focus on raising Autism awareness, acceptance, and inclusion. This initiative aligns with World Autism Awareness Month, celebrated in April, which emphasizes community support, storytelling, and building an inclusive society.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, PICE UAE supported the Basketball Autism Awareness Cup, participating with a team named “PICE Basketball,” composed of 20 players from different teams participated from the Sportsfest last 27 April 2024. The team was recognized for their efforts, winning the Best Uniform Award during the opening ceremony on May 18. Additionally, Engr. Alexia Harnole Serrano, who accompanied the team as the Muse, won 1st Runner-Up in the Best Muse category.

The opening ceremony of the Autism Awareness Cup 2024 was a grand success, featuring all participating teams with their Muses, generous sponsors, notable guests including the Title Holder of Mrs. PhilippinesUAE, and our very own Engr. Sheena O. Mecaydor,

who inspired this year’s Mrs. Philippines-UAE aspirants. The event was also graced by the Bayanihan Council Chairman Mr. Alfonso Halibas and the Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, His Excellency Alfonso Ferdinand Ver, who praised the organization’s support for World Autism Awareness Month.

For Our Emirates We Plant: PICE-UAE joins Tree

On May 11, 2024 at Al Bahiya, Abu Dhabi, the Emirates Environmental Group organized a successful tree planting event titled “For Our Emirates We Plant.” This initiative was more than just planting trees; it was about fostering a sense of community and responsibility toward our environment. different organizations in the UAE participated together with our engineers from PICE-UAE

Tree planting plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy environment. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which is vital for our survival. They help combat climate change, reduce air pollution, and provide habitats for wildlife. Additionally, trees enhance the beauty of our surroundings and can even improve our mental well-being.

Additionally, including the younger generation in tree planting activities is essential. It instils in them a sense of responsibility toward the environment from an early age. When children and teenagers participate in such initiatives, they learn the value of nature and the importance of preserving it. This hands-on experience encourages them to become lifelong advocates for the environment, ensuring a greener future for everyone.

impact. By working together, they showed that even small actions can lead to significant changes. The event was a reminder that caring for our environment is a collective responsibility, and everyone has a role to play.

In conclusion, the tree planting initiative was a meaningful event that highlighted the importance of trees, the value of involving young people, and the strength of community collaboration. Together, we can create a greener and more sustainable world for future generations.

Completion of SPLE Review Program 2024 & Celebrating Achievement:

The Journey to Becoming Licensed Civil Engineers

Time truly flies. Since the SPLE review program began in September 2023, we have successfully completed the review program and are now in its final stage. This journey has been marked by dedication, hard work, and the unwavering support of our COSPLE officers, mentors and instructors.

Last 26th of May 2024, PICE-UAE President, Engr. Sheryl Dela Pena, along with the 2024 Board of Directors and mentors, attended the final sessions of group studies. Their presence and guidance provided immense motivation to our aspirants, offering them valuable strategies and insights for the actual board exam. Their commitment into nurturing the next generation of civil engineers has been inspiring.

PICE-UAE together with COSPLE officers, mentors and instructors during Closing Program at Hyatt Place, Dubai last May 26, 2024.

To support our aspirants in their board exam preparation, COSPLE organized sessions and assigned instructors over the past eight months focusing on exam-relevant topics in Mathematics, Hydraulics and Geotechnical, and Design. These sessions were outlined to help them to get explanation from problem-solving misconceptions and alleviate confusions. Additionally, bi-weekly online and faceto-face group study sessions were scheduled to foster in-depth discussions on these subjects, providing further opportunities for clarification. Regular practice exams were also administered to familiarize aspirants with exam formats and to reinforce learning.

Furthermore, based on aspirant’s requests, the review period was extended to include refresher course.

Finally, to evaluate the readiness of all aspirants, COSPLE prepared and conducted a Pre-Board Exam. This pre-board examination is a crucial milestone in the academic journey of reviewees, serving as a preparatory step towards their actual board exam scheduled for June 16 and 17, 2024. It not only assesses their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum but also helps them develop effective time management and exam strategies.

As we reach the culmination of this rigorous review program, COSPLE 2023-2024 has organized a Closing Program at Hyatt Place - Dubai, on May 26, 2024. This event was organized to mark the successful completion of the program and to motivate the reviewees for the upcoming board exam. The event brought together reviewees, Instructors, COSPLE, BOD’s, and all the guests in a collective effort to acknowledge the achievements and progress of the reviewee. The ceremony commenced with the warm welcome speech of Engr. Bernie Favorito (COSPLE Adviser), followed by an inspirational message by Engr. Sheryl Dela Pena - PICE-UAE President, 2024 & Engr. Elmer Casao - PPO 2024 Chairman. Awards were presented to recognize their outstanding performance during the review period, emphasizing their commitment and resilience.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the program’s success and honoured us with their presence during the program. Special thanks go to PICE-UAE President, Engr. Sheryl Dela Pena, the Board of Directors, COSPLE Adviser, Engr. Bernie Favorito. Your support and guidance have been invaluable.

Congratulations to all the aspirants who have successfully completed the program. Your achievements serve as an inspiration to all. May your success in the actual board exam be the reward for your hard work and perseverance. Your commitment to becoming licensed civil engineers is a testament to your passion and drive, and we have full confidence that you will excel in all your future endeavours. Best wishes for the challenges ahead and for a bright and successful career ahead!

COME NIGHT 3.0: Perspire and Refresh through Badminton and Basketball Games

The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers United Arab Emirates Chapter kicked-off another event to perspire and refresh the bodies of the members even after the sportsfest event held last 31st of May 2024.

It was a scheduled play of basketball and badminton to be played by the members in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The players were already prepared to take on the play even from the start of morning as the posters were already relayed a day before.

The sun was blazing hot and fortunately the rented gym was a covered court to protect the people from the scorching heat outside as the summer was almost immensely coming to the country. Everyone was ready to sweat and kept an upbeat mood to keep on within the day before the actual activity in the evening.

Headed by the committee on membership, the event was very much anticipated by the members and prepared their snacks and water before going to the place. Engr. Angelito Castillo and Engineer Sheryl Dela Pena guided the members on how to get to the location and coordinated on where would be the specific area to play in.

The location was near the places of the members as it was very much accessible and kept a distance wherein most of them would be able to go to by bus transportation.

The players started with playing badminton in the court and kept a cool atmosphere within the covered court even though it was a heated event for the evening. Most of the women opted to play badminton on the half court and some of the men started warming up in the other half of the court.

It was an intense play from the badminton game and made rounds within the court with the children cheering on the players on the side lane. They gave smashes back and forth from each other making the game great to watch.

At the other half of the court, the basketball players also played outstandingly and made their mark as really great sample of resilient people no matter how much exhausting their game was because of the few numbers of players to swap places with them and rotate the play.

At the end of the day everyone hit the objective to perspire and refresh their bodies to take on the next days of work and gained new set of connections to move forward with.

COME TALK 10.0: BIM ISO 19650 Certification and Overview

The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, Inc. – United Arab Emirates Chapter opened the opportunity for the participants to know more about the Building Information Modelling procedures and how to level up their skills and credentials with regard to BIM last May 19.

As the world is adapting with the people inhibiting it, so are the people. Technology has been rising quickly and exponentially since the beginning of time. It is believed that this technology helped make jobs faster and more accurate.

Engr. Rachel R. Alcantara shared her valued knowledge to the attendees and relayed the introduction in opening up the career in being a specialist of Building information modelling. She first introduced herself to the speakers and some of her accomplished works in the country of United Arab Emirates and projects in other countries.

She relayed the information on how to get credentials and its processes. She first started on what were the items to tackle in order to do a startup career in doing Building Information Modelling. It was quite a great view of her presentation as it was stated there that they should target a lot of trainings and learnings from different platforms in order to be recognized as an adept user of building information modelling software.

The audience has shown their interest in the subject matter by asking many questions in the chatbox regarding the timeline on how many years it would take to learn all the required trainings to be a professional software modeler.

After answering all the queries with regard to the timeline, they next asked about the fees and how much it would cost to take all the trainings and the credentials to be a professional software modeler. Engr. Rachel Alcantara shared a table on how much money she invested to become who she is today.

Everyone was inspired and gratefully thanked the technical speaker for sharing all her knowledge to the participants and sparked a new idea on what career path they would want to take.

COME TALK 11.0: Health is Wealth

Health is truly every person’s wealth as it dictates the capacity of a human being to survive this world. It is a significant factor to consider while balancing with our every day’s activities. We should be able to eat accordingly and keep ourselves healthy to survive longer in this world.

The PICE-UAE Chapter opened up the webinar with invocations and prepared everyone for a very interactive and exciting atmosphere throughout. The host Engr. Kris Gabrielle Bautista demonstrated her eagerness to host the webinar for that day and kept the participants energized to ask questions during the webinar discussion.

The speaker Dr. Joey Villanueva reiterated the causes on why people get sick. He first discussed about inactivity which entails that people get sick if they do not do physical activities and keep on staying in the office during long hours of work. He also shared that eating an abundant number of unhealthy foods can lead to lack of vitamins in the body and how it would react to lower the immune system.

Dr. Joey also shared the financial side of knowing how to budget yourself to eat healthy and compared it to eating food that are readily available and processed. He stated that most Filipinos got a knack of eating their favorite foods which are not good for their health. The next session he tackled was about the mental health of each individual as it is somewhat connected to the overall health of an individual. Being optimistic in life can lead to the betterment of people and he said that the brain has hormones which gets released whenever we get happy and tap to that certain feeling for us to be productive at work and to all other activities.

It was then that the webinar moved forward to its question-and-answer portion. The host requested the participants to turn on their camera and microphone

to let them ask the questions directly to Dr. Joey.

Most of the questions relayed by the attendees were mostly about how their work as a civil engineer would affect their overall health and how to maintain it to keep itself be active while being productive.

The PICE-UAE Chapter would like to appreciate all the attendees who participated and we hope that people would be able to apply all theses learnings to their daily lives, as it is important to keep a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent sickness and live a happier longer life.

COME TALK 12.0: Technical Requirements to Work as Engineer in UAE

Every country has its own technical requirements for each professional worker that comes to their land. The United Arab Emirates has its regulations in order for its engineers to become an approved practicing professional.

The participants were excited to hear about what was in store for them specially for those who are interested to work in the country of United Arab Emirates. Around 200 plus participants were present and actively participated in asking the questions and clarifications to the speaker which were also eager to answer.

The first speaker of the technical webinar was Vice Consul Kevin Mark Gomez of the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He reiterated the processes and the needed documents to get the certificate of equivalency in the UAE to work fluidly in the country. Engineers were required to have this document to proceed with the different emirate approvals and be recognized as a legitimate engineer in the UAE.

There were some concerns in getting this equivalency because of the requirement of passing the board exam for civil engineers. Some professionals asked if maybe they may consider non-board passers to apply for it.

The second speaker of the webinar was Engineer Kristine Ghea Villanueva who shared her experience on how she got her Society of Engineers membership in the country of United Arab Emirates. She explained that this credential can help be recognized as a working civil engineer in the country and can further improve their coordination with different municipalities.

The third speaker of the webinar was Engineer AbdulAzim Ontok who shared his experience on obtaining the Abu Dhabi Municipality approval and presented

the process in the system on how to get it and pass the exam of the municipality. It was a very detailed presentation and piqued the interest of the viewers to upskill their profiles.

The last speaker of the webinar was Engineer Salibel Jatulla who presented the Dubai Municipality engineer’s approval and what were the different methods on obtaining it and shared some of his experience during the examination.

Overall the Talk was very fruitful and many questions were answered during the talk most especially in handling the different requirements of each approval which were really needed to work as a recognized engineer in the country of United Arab Emirates.

A Mother’s Prowess with Pure Love

My main hero is our one and only Mother, Violeta Pronto Villanueva. She won all the family’s battles as she faced them stronger and stronger with power and fierce. My Mother, My Hero, My Wind Beneath my Wings, My Backbone.

Ever since the year of 1993, when our father died, she stood up as one for 2 persona - a mother and a father for her 2 children, my brother who is 4-year old then and me who was 8-year old that time. She works double time seven days a week 24 hours a day for our daily needs. Together with her regular work as LGU employee, she established a small merchandising store in our town market with different kinds and types of dry and frozen products. As her children to help for extra income, she teaches me how to make an ice from “tubig poso” as we call it (water well) to sell in the market vendors for fish, meat and soft drinks retailer. Waking up early has been our mother’s everyday routine even on weekend for her another business to prepare like dressed meat for delivery to her so called “suki” distributed by my brother using his bicycle at nearby homes.

fulfil our goals & dreams, my brother and I succeeded to the fullest of our dreams and we graduated both with pride and honour for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from our respective University & Colleges, Paul Eric Villanueva graduated from University of the Philippines-Los Banos Laguna and yours truly graduated at Columban CollegeOlongapo City. Luckily, my brother and I got an opportunity here in United Arab Emirates in one company as a Civil Engineer and we performed our tasks and roles with self-confidence and knowledge as we overcome all the challenges to succeed in our career and finally we both won the trust and confidence of our General Manager and we both promoted as Managers in our own department as Asst. QA/QC Manager and Materials and Coordination Manager, respectively. And afterwards we both pursue our Degree with Master of Science in Construction Management with Polytechnic University of the Philippines, but sadly it is only me who finished it with my brothers guidance and assistance of everything.

Unfortunately, it came our big loss in the family happened on year 2021 when my brother died during the massive covid outbreak and with this, my mom and I faced another fall down in our lives after the passing of my father after 27 years, that this time, it is my precious brother passed away beside me here in UAE without the chance our mother to hug and see

him before his cremation due to her health condition and an on-going travel ban from/to Philippines and United Arab Emirates. I felt helpless and hopeless in this situation for my mother and myself. Loosing my loving brother broke us down to the fullest that results of my admission to Al Dhaid Hospital with only 60% presence of oxygen in my body because I pretended to be strong for how many days after the passing of my brother just to show to our mother that I am strong like her but this is no use to hide from her because it just double the burden and pain in her heart and body as she cries out loud to our friends and family besides us to take care of me that she can’t accept that if something bad will happen again to me while we are still in grief on my brother’s passing as my mother and I are thousand miles apart with each other in this bad situation.

Though pain is still in our hearts, after all these battles, hardships and tears my mother faced alone as a mother and a father, along with her multiple roles and encounters, for more than 4 decades of her service to our town’s LGU with hard work, humbleness and honesty, this time she is retiring to spend and enjoy her full time with us, her child, and two beautiful grand kids.

Yes. You read the title right. ‘Di po ako nagmumura. Nagkataon lang talaga na pito. I have 7 mothers, and their son is me. Normal sa isang pamilya ang may isang ilaw ng tahanan. Pero sa case ko, mala-christmas lights; pito ang nagbigay liwanag at gabay sa buhay ko. Paano nangyari ‘yun? Here is my story.

I came from a dysfunctional family where my parents separated when I was a baby. ‘Di ko na ilalahad ang kwento nila basta hindi ako lumaki na kasama ang biological mother ko na si Mommy Y. – ang dahilan kung bakit ako naisilang sa mundong ito. Now, she has her own family raising 3 children alone – a single mom.

Sa musmos na gulang, I had compared myself to my classmates dahil napapansin kong ang sumusundo sa kanila ay kanilang nanay. Dahil hindi nakikita ang mga magulang ko, natukso rin akong ampon dahil lola ko lagi ang umaakyat sa stage ‘pag recognition days. Kahit napapataas ko ang dugo ng lola ko dahil sa kakulitan, siya ang nag-tiyaga at umintindi sa’kin kahit ang responsibilidad na ‘yun ay para sa mga magulang ko. – siya si Nanay F. – ang lola kong sumubaybay hanggang sa paglaki ko.

Pero para naman hindi ma-stress at humaba ang buhay ng lola ko, nandyan ang mga tita ko para alagaan ako.

Mommy Y.

Nandyan si Nanay J. na may anim na anak. Kalaro ko lagi ang mga pinsan ko. ‘Pag nasa kanila ako, para akong ika-pitong anak n’ya. Marami man syang anak, pero pantay-pantay pa rin ang pagmamahal n’yang binibigay sa lahat.

Nandyan din si Mami L. na isang guro na may asawang seaman. Mahilig sya sa mga bata kaya gusto ring magkaanak. Kaso nahirapan sila kaya pumapanata at sumasayaw sa Obando. Dahil malayo lagi ang asawa, ako lagi ang sinasama n’ya pag may gusto s’yang puntahan. Syempre lilibre nya rin ako ng Jollibee, or bibilhan ng laruan.

Kasama rin ang Tita M. ko na midwife na s’ya ring breadwinner ng pamilya. Nagkaasawa pero nagkahilaway. Hindi nabiyayaan ng anak. Pinili nya na lang pagtuunan ng pansin ang aming pamilya. Araw-araw s’yang nagluluwal ng sanggol ng iba, ngunit hindi sya pinalad magkaroon ng sarili nyang anak. Kaya ako na ‘yung parang anak nya. Kami lagi ang magkadamayan ‘pag may problema ang isa’t isa.

Baka nagtataka kayo at ‘di nyo makita ang tatay ko sa kwento. Hindi naman ako napabayaan ng mga magulang ko. Hindi ko lang talaga sila kasama lagi nung bata ako.

Mapagmahal ang tatay ko. Nang hindi sila nagworkout ni Mommy Y., umibig s’ya kay Mommy R. – ang step-mother ko – at nagkaroon sila ng dalawang anak. Kahit hindi ako galing sa kanya, hindi nya pinaramdam na iba ako. Tinanggap nya rin ako bilang anak nya.

Mapagmahal ang tatay ko. Nang hindi naman sila nag-workout ni Mommy R., umibig s’yang muli kay Tita A. – ang pangalawang step-mother ko – at nagkaroon sila ng limang anak… na pusa. Kahit hindi ako galing sa kanya, hindi nya pinaramdam na iba ako. Tinanggap nya rin ako bilang anak nya kahit ‘di ako nagma-meow.

Ang daming nakapagsabi sakin na galing raw ako sa isang broken family, bakit hindi raw pariwara ang buhay ko. At first, di ko rin alam ang dahilan hanggang napagtanto kong ‘di ko pala namalayan na kulang ako dahil may mga nagpunan.

Mahirap maging isang ina. Pero mas mahirap ang magpaka-ina. ‘Yung una ay ang kakayahan mong magluwal ng sanggol sa mundo. Yung pangalawa

ay ang pagpapalaki ng sanggol nang busog sa pagaaruga at pagmamahal. May ibang babaeng ang kaya lang ay ang una at hindi na magawa ang pangalawa. May ibang babaeng hindi kaya ang una pero kayang mapanindigan ang responsibilidad.

Hindi naikakahon kailanman ang kahulugan ng pagiging ina sa kakayahan mong manganak. Bagkus, saklaw din nito kung paano ka nagmistulang ilaw ng isang munting nilalang. Kaya kung isa man anak mo or isang basketball team, single mother ka, challenged to have children at nag-aalaga ng bata kahit ‘di galing sa’yo, you deserve to be greeted a Happy Mother’s Day dahil isa kang ina at nagpapaka-ina ka.

I had different mothers in each stage of my life. Lahat sila, binuo ako kung ano man ako ngayon. Kaya maraming salamat at mahal ko kayong pitong ina ko.

What is your fondest memory with your mother?

Fondest? Siguro, funny memory kasi pag ‘yun ang tanong sa akin, eto agad naalala ko. Pag may dumadalaw sa akin na either manliligaw or boyfriend sa bahay, never nag-i-stay si mama sa bahay. Tatambay sya sa tindahan ng tita ko, or sa balcony ng tito ko with other friends nya. Pag nasa bahay si mama at ginabi yung dumalaw sa bahay, lahat ng kaldero tsaka batya namin lumilipad, and super ingay. As in lumalagabang lahat, pati pintuan ng banyo namin. Sign yun na pinalalayas na nya yung bumisita.

Describe your mother.

Physically, she is a typical Filipino mom na around 5-5’2 ang height, then medyo voluptuous frame. But she is very, very hard working. One of the strongest women I knew, physically and emotionally. Maabilidad sa buhay. She never lose ways to provide for us. Sturdy magdecide. Paninindigan every decision she makes but nagpapakumbaba pag alam nyang she is not right. Maingay. Hahahaha… will never stop until the work is done. She is secretive and never shows suffering.

What are the lessons you acquired from her?

Life is difficult. Kaya dapat alam mo kung paano malusutan at matawid yun. Hindi solusyon ang tumakas or tumakbo. Kailangan mo harapin lahat. You have to help yourself in order to survive but don’t give up. She also taught me that there is nothing shameful asking for help or support. Basta hindi ka nakakasagasa at hindi nandadaya. Cheating will never do any good. She raised all 4 of us na magkakapatid to have at least the minimum in life. Simple lang pero necessary at alam nyang magagamit namin sa future. That is why I know I can survive kahit ano ang ilagay sa harap ko.

How do these lessons affect your way of parenting?

I stayed teaching my children the way how I was brought up by my parents, my mother in particular. Okay lang na sumunod ka sa uso ngayon para hindi ka mapag-iwanan, but never forget your roots. I still punish my kids if they do not respect elders or older than them. I am not saying I am a perfect example, but I wanted them to learn to have high importance to others. Being a mother made me realize how much I could affect my children’s whole being and their future. And that was a realization in looking back when my mother would really chase me with a long stick because I came home past my curfew, or did not do my assignment, or sumagot ng pabalang sa kanila. There is a core character that is being developed while they do this.

Any words to your mother?

My goodness. This is the easiest way to make me cry.

Ma, I miss you much. I hope you are seeing what I am and have now. Kung buhay ka lang, nakikita ko na naman na namumula yung ilong tsaka mata ko sa pag- iyak. Sana you are proud of me. Like you always silently celebrate whenever I bring home a medal or award to you, ikaw and si Papa ang dahilan kung bakit andito ako ngayon. You inspired me and motivated me. You have made me what I am now, and I will always be proud na you have taught me a lot every time other people praise me. Because I know I have learned from the best. Mahal na mahal kita.
