In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our professional lives. With the constant pressure to excel in our careers, it can be challenging to find a balance between work and personal life. However, having an outlet for a balanced professional life is essential for our overall well-being. Engaging in activities that are separate from our work allows us to recharge, de-stress, and improve our mental health.

Throughout history, individuals have recognized the importance of finding balance in their lives. Philosophers, such as Aristotle, emphasized the need for moderation in all aspects of life, including work. This idea of balancing work with other activities has been echoed by numerous scholars, thinkers, and leaders throughout the centuries.

One key figure who understood the importance of having an outlet for a balanced professional life was Mahatma Gandhi. Despite his busy schedule as a political leader and activist, Gandhi made it a priority to engage in activities such as meditation, fasting, and walking in nature. These activities allowed him to find peace and clarity amidst the chaos of his work. Gandhi’s commitment to self-care and balance serves as a powerful example for individuals today who are seeking to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Unlocking Success: PICE-UAE Navigates Design to Budget Provisions in Construction Contracts

PICE-UAE attended the first CPD Session organized by the PICQS-UAE Chapter titled “Adhering to Client’s Design to Budget Provision” held last 21st of April 2024 at Mercure Dubai, Deira, led by the dynamic duo - Engr. Enrico John Chavez and his wife, Engr. Anngela Chavez - the session delved into crucial topics surrounding the design to budget provision.

The CPD session covered the distinction between designing to a budget, designing to value, and budgeting to design, with an emphasis on the increasing prevalence of the “Designing to Budget” provision in contracts executed by developers. Attendees gained insights into the proactive role of quantity surveyors in budget estimation and value contribution while ensuring compliance with the contractual requirements set out for the project.

The seminar provided a comprehensive overview the development stages of the project from inception to completion, and how the RIBA Plan of Work collectively gathered the different disciplines involved in the project, providing an overview of their roles, responsibilities, and the sequence of activities required at each stage.

Furthermore, the roles and duties of a Quantity Surveyor were discussed spanning from Feasibility stage to Lifecycle Costing. These responsibilities comprised activities like establishing realistic budgets via benchmarking, providing cost-related guidance, and conducting life cycle costing assessments. The comprehensive understanding was further enriched by the valuable insights shared by speakers versed in both client and consultant viewpoints.

Despite the challenging weather and road conditions on that day, a total of 44 attendees from various regions of the Emirates came together for this seminar.

Connect with Nature: PICE-UAE supports the Turtle Welfare Advocacy

The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers-UAE Chapter (PICE-UAE) has collaborated with the Saadiyat Turtle Conservation Program, led by Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort, to participate in the Connect with Nature initiative. This conservation effort aims to protect the critically endangered Hawksbill turtles that nest on Saadiyat’s beaches during the spring and summer seasons.

As a participant in the turtle patrol, I was trained to identify and track turtle activity by analyzing their scatological and behavioral signs, such as tracks, nesting sites, and feeding patterns. The patrol team was also educated on the importance of data collection, nest protection, and occasional relocation of turtles. During the patrol, we were tasked with recording all turtle activity, including nesting sites, to ensure the conservation of these endangered species.

Recent surveys have confirmed that turtle nesting has commenced, highlighting the importance of continued conservation efforts. PICE-UAE invites individuals to join the Connect with Nature patrol on May 31st, June 14th, or 28th to learn more about the program and participate in the conservation efforts. On April 14, 2024, the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers-UAE Chapter (PICE-UAE) actively engaged in the Blood Donation Campaign hosted at Ahalia Hospital in Abu Dhabi, UAE, as part of its collaborative efforts with the Bayanihan Council. This initiative underscores PICE-UAE’s commitment to community welfare and healthcare advocacy, aligning with its mission to promote social responsibility and public health initiatives among its members and the broader community.

The event showcased a collective effort, with various dynamic Filipino community organizations joining forces under the umbrella of the Bayanihan Council. This collaboration exemplifies synergistic community engagements and highlights the importance of partnership in driving meaningful societal impact.

Furthermore, the distinguished presence of H.E. Ambassador Alfonso Ferdinand A. Ver at the event underscored the significance of such initiatives in fostering strong diplomatic ties and promoting shared values of humanitarianism and community service between the Philippines and the UAE. In a remarkable display of solidarity and generosity, three prominent organizations, PICEUAE, APO-ADAA, and AUFWWAAD, joined forces to organize the Blood Drive 2024 in Abu Dhabi. This collaborative effort not only highlighted the importance of blood donation but also showcased the power of community when united for a common cause.

The event, held on April 05 2024, was a resounding success, with a total of 120 successful blood donors contributing to the Abu Dhabi Blood Bank. This remarkable turnout was a testament to the dedication and commitment of the organizers and the generosity of the donors.

The Blood Drive 2024 was not just about collecting blood; it was also about raising awareness about the critical need for regular blood donations. Many people do not realize that blood is a lifeline in emergencies and for patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, and other medical procedures. By donating blood, individuals have the opportunity to save lives and make a tangible difference in their community.

The collaboration between PICE-UAE, APO-ADAA, and AUFWWAAD was instrumental in the success of the event. Smile UAE’s Book Fair Sale to Raise Funds for Children in Need – A SUCCESSFUL STORY!

PICE-UAE together with APO-ADAA, volunteers participated on the Book Fare sale organized by Operation Smile UAE at Al Wahda Mall, Abu Dhabi, UAE last April 20, 2024.

Operation Smile UAE, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free surgical care to children with cleft lip and palate, recently held a successful Book Fair Sale to raise funds for their cause. The event, which took place in partnership with volunteers from PICE-UAE and other communities from UAE, was aimed at generating support and awareness for children in need of life-changing surgeries.

Operation Smile UAE has been actively involved in providing medical care to children with cleft lip and palate for many years. Their mission is to ensure that every child suffering from this condition has access to safe, effective, and timely surgical care. Through their efforts, they have helped thousands of children in the UAE and beyond, giving them the gift of a smile and a brighter future.

1, 2, 3, SMILE! - Volunteers for Operation Smile UAE’s Book Fair Sale held at Al Wahda Mall, Abu Dhabi last April 20, 2024.

The Book Fair Sale, held over the course of 3 days, from April 19 to April 21, saw a great turnout from the community. Volunteers from PICE-UAE worked tirelessly to help assist in the event, showcasing a wide variety of books for sale. The proceeds from the sale amounted to over AED 42,000. The funds raised will go towards providing reconstructive surgeries for cleft conditions, changing the lives of children and adults, around the world.

“It’s because of supportive friends like you that Operation Smile is able to travel to remote locations around the world providing free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries to children who would otherwise be destined to live lives of heartbreak and shame. Instead, their lives are full of promise and endless possibility.” said Morag Cromey-Hawke, Executive Director, Operation Smile UAE.

“With the funds raised, we will be able to provide lifechanging surgeries to children who would otherwise not have access to this essential care.”

The success of this event highlights the power of community support and volunteerism in making a difference in the lives of children in need. Operation Smile UAE and PICE-UAE are committed to continuing their efforts to provide medical care and support to children with cleft lip and palate, ensuring that they have the opportunity to live healthy, happy lives.

COME TALK 8.0:

Understanding the Asean Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE) Application Requirements

First and foremost, Advance Level Engineering (ALE) categorized and being attained in many ways like ACPE, APEC, ASEAN from its respective registration/organization body with different guidelines to be followed by interested and qualified different engineering professional with vast engineering experience under local and international practices. With this qualification, an engineer can gain more chances to be globally competitive and recognition to acquire continual self-improvement and career growth.

For now, our topic will focus on the experience of our speaker on his journey for ACPE (Asean Chartered Professional Engineer) Application Requirements which is under Philippine Professional Regulation Commission presented by former PICE-UAE President 2022 Engr. John Joseph Guinoo, an ASEAN Engineer, an ACPE, and an Structural Engineer for over 12yrs in UAE currently working with Mott MacDonald.

President Engr. Jae (as called by many), he started his presentation discussing about the background,

benefits, timeline, and cost/fess related to it. He also opens a chance of question and answer to participants for clarity of their doubts for pursuing the ACPE Applications.

To start with, the requirements are not hard to comply since it is only available with you as the basic scholastic records, trainings & seminars with CPD Approved by PRC and some additional documents to obtain from PRC website, others requirements are Certificate of Good Standing from your APO (Accredited Professional Organization), NBI Clearance and

Notarized Code of Ethics which can also be obtained through PRC or authorized private law firm. And the application process is only to be done directly to PRC website. He also emphasizes that a valid PRC ID is a must to proceed with the ACPE Application with minimum 7 years of professional experience from passing the Civil Engineering Licensure Examination.

Struggles and challenges in complying with the requirements will be there. Nonetheless, giving your time and effort, exerting your best and making a way, it is rest assured that you will accomplish your desired and allowable timeframe. Upon completion of the Application Process, the next step is the schedule of interview with panel of experts PRB (Professional Regulatory Board) as per your engineering profession you applied for. Then upon obtaining the approval and successful passing of your interview, the next step is Conferment - the fulfillment of the ACPE Application Process.

We encourage all engineers not to be hesitant to become an Advance Level Engineer, regardless of your chosen engineering field or specialization, either through the channel of a Private or Government Organization, to be recognized and to enjoy the benefits of each respective ALE Registers.

COME TALK 9.0: Self Leaderhip The Foundation Of Leading In Engineering

Leadership is the ability of an individual or group to inspire and guide supporters of an organization, society, or team. Soft skills enhancement is a vital characteristic to further develop the potential to be a leader.

It has been a pleasure to have Engr. Johanna Marie Trespeces to share with the participants his expertise in self-leadership and self-management in engineering. The PICE-UAE arranged this COME Talk 9.0 to help the audience gain more knowledge and awareness of own strengths and leadership styles.

Engr. Hanna started her presentation by sharing her personal background and skills that strengthened her capability to be a development mentor and life coach. She then presented the objective of the talk and stages of life of an Engineer. She stated that engineers are great in technical skills and require development of social and life skills. She then differentiates the concept of leading and managing which shares the same idea; to accomplish a goal, explain vision,

organize, motivate, and mobilize resources. As per Drucker 1999, Leadership is doing the right things. Whereas management is doing things right.

The type of person that makes a good leader as presented by Engr. Hanna is categorized by leadership models, leadership philosophies and leadership styles. She then enumerated and defined the leadership styles as autocratic, democratic, laissezfaire, transformational, and transactional. Having a description of these styles helps us know ourselves more about what type of leadership are we conveying. In conclusion, the transformational leadership style is often the most effective approach since it motivates and builds a stronger and more successful team.

She further discusses the difference between core leadership and adaptive leadership. The mission, the vision, and the values of both leaderships. The core leadership skills are the foundation of effective leadership while the adaptive leadership skills create dynamic leaders who are extremely effective in any situation. As stated by Engr. Hanna, to lead others, we have first be able to effectively lead ourselves. Even if we don’t have the leadership title within the organization, we must still be self-leader. She then presented the four pillars of leadership, which are knowing who you are, knowing what you do, knowing what you need to learn, and using what you know. All these pillars shall be aligned with your principles to lead with validity. The essence of being an authentic leader is presented by Johari Window Model. Knowing yourself and what you want to become helps you develop your personal leadership plan.

The presentation ended in a conclusion stating that “Self-leadership is not about managing others. Selfleadership is about leading yourself”.

COME NIGHT 2.0: Sportsfest Warm-up “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind”

As the 2024 PICE-UAE Sportsfest was about to be held. The PICE-UAE Committee on membership heated up the upcoming event with a quick warm-up to let the members feel excited. The event dated last April 20, 2024 (Sunday) was done in two locations namely, the Mushrif Kid’s Park and St. Joseph’s School sports hall.

The venues included access to play volleyball, badminton, and basketball wherein the members of PICE-UAE were able to utilize. During the warmup, the players first played in the Mushrif Kid’s Park wherein they played badminton and volleyball. Even though it was an open field location, the members were able to enjoy the play as most of them does not have an active time during work days, and they appreciated much the time spent in releasing some heat from their bodies.

It was a close fight during the badminton and volleyball plays as they had an allotted 2 hours to play, and indeed trying to catch the ball was hard enough to run to at the heat of the sun and light rays. The technique of the players to do smash shots in badminton guaranteed points and was hard enough to catch for the other team. The teams were able to take shifts to play and everyone enjoyed the company of each other during the play.

No pain, no gain - PICE-UAE warms-up in Mushrif Kid’s Park and St. Joseph’s School sports hall last April 20, 2024 for the upcoming PICE-UAE Sportsfest 2024..

The players then moved on to play volleyball wherein they actually had trouble in finding a ball to play for the volleyball as some attendees actually don’t play volleyball that much. Thankfully there was an available ball to play in the court and the players enjoyed their play even though they lacked players for both teams. It was a great advantage for tall players as the net was high enough to cover One and a half person. The players were able to jump and reach the net in order to score a point and do spikes.

The members lastly went on to go to the second location which was the St. Joseph’s School sports hall, wherein they proceeded in playing basketball utilizing the half court first. More players came to the venue to enjoy playing basketball and it was a nice timing for the players as most of them has a Saturday off and went on to warm themselves up before the sportsfest.

Overall, the PICE-UAE 2024 Committee on Membership would like to thank all the attendees that came to strengthen their connection with each other and can play more in the future even outside the organization, as the objective of the committee is to connect members to each other.

Happened at Khalifa University last 27th of April 2024, the event led by PICE-UAE which was spearheaded by CCSR Chairman Engr. Melvin Javier was a vibrant display of athleticism, teamwork and unity; with each team embodying the essence of the competition’s theme: “Igniting the passion for Victory: Embracing competitive spirit through Unity.” The Red Team emerged as the Overall Champion, showcasing their prowess across various disciplines. However, it was not merely about winning; it was about the journey of self-improvement and the bonds forged through friendly competition.

The sportsfest kicked off with infectious energy, hosted by Engr. Jason Lee and Engr. Blesil Apduhan, setting the tone for a day filled with excitement and camaraderie. Participants were invigorated by a Zumba exercise led by Engr. Giovanni Vergil Contreras and Engr. Joeper Famorcan, preparing them for the challenges ahead.

The program commenced with a moment of reflection, as Engr. Angelito Castillo and Engr. Salibel Jatulla led prayers, representing the diverse faiths within the community. The solemnity of the occasion was followed by the stirring rendition of the national anthem, a poignant reminder of the pride and unity among Filipinos in the UAE.

FLAMES OF VICTORY SPORTSFEST 2024

Addressing the gathering, Engr. Sheryl Dela Pena, the 2024 President, emphasized the significance of the sportsfest in fostering camaraderie, friendship, sportsmanship, and unity among civil engineers. It was not merely a competition but a celebration of the collective spirit that binds the community together.

Central to the event was the oath of sportsmanship led by Engr. Joeper Famorcan, PICE-UAE 2024 1ST Vice- Precident underscoring the importance of fair play, respect, and integrity in both victory and defeat. The parade of teams, led by PICE UAE Past Presidents, further showcased the diversity and unity within the community.

Each team, distinguished by vibrant colors, demonstrated their strength and unity, led by dedicated organizers and past leaders. The Blue Team, led by Engr. Louie Jams Bendanillo and Engr. Oranantes Delizo, amassed the highest number of members, showcasing their unwavering support and enthusiasm for the event.

Adding to the excitement were captivating demonstrations, including a display of Jujitsu prowess by the Khulood Club and a mesmerizing golf swing performance by Engr. Giovanni Vergil Contreras. The event also featured a unique Ukay-Ukay booth,

managed by Engr. John Carlo Cayog, offering pre-loved items to PICE UAE members, fostering sustainability and community engagement.

The presence of Chairman Alfonso Halibas of the Bayanihan Council and the current Board of Directors underscored the significance of sports activities in fostering collaboration and unity within the Filipino community in the UAE. It was a reaffirmation of their commitment to supporting each other’s advocacies and maintaining the spirit of unity and camaraderie.

Engr. Melvin Javier, current Board of Director of PICE UAE and Chairman of the Committee on Corporate Social Responsibilities (CCSR), expressed heartfelt gratitude to the participants for the success of the event and for achieving its goals and objectives.

He highlighted the invaluable contribution of the organizing committees and volunteers from the inception of planning to the execution of the event. Additionally, he extended appreciation to sponsors from Pinoy Hub, Century Properties, Al Ahia Medical Group, whose gracious support made the event possible, and acknowledged the guidance and officiating assistance from Skills Plus.

In the end, as medals were awarded and cheers echoed through the halls of Khalifa University, it was evident that the true victory lay not in individual achievements but in the bonds forged and the memories created. The 2024 PICE UAE Sportsfest was not just a competition; it was a celebration of the collective strength, resilience, and unity of Filipino civil engineers in the UAE.

For the month of April, all nationalities around the world especially United Arab Emirates celebrated the “Eid Mubarak” which encapsulates the essence of joy, blessings, and communal celebration that define the Eid festivals in the Islamic tradition. The greeting carries profound cultural and religious significance, reflecting the values of compassion, gratitude, and unity that are central to Islam. Through the exchange of “Eid Mubarak,” Muslims around the world convey their well-wishes and blessings, fostering a spirit of joy, generosity, and solidarity during the festive occasions of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

For the non-Muslims like the majority of Filipinos in the country, they planned with a small group of friends or family members to spend the season. These holidays are a chance to relax, unwind, and explore new places or activities to recharge our batteries, expand our horizons, and create lasting memories.

In our world today where all adults spend near half of their day in exerting time and effort with their profession, we tend to treat ourselves with quality time with friends, loveed ones and/or with family to escape from stress, to be free from responsibilities and to achieve this feeling of enjoyment before the day/week ends.
