GRANTS / IN 2014 In 2014, after matching donors’ intentions with the needs of the community and performing due diligence on the recipient organizations, The Philadelphia Foundation awarded grants and scholarships totaling more than $24 million to 1,271 community organizations.
TYPES OF GRANTS Discretionary Grants are awarded by The Philadelphia Foundation’s Board of Managers upon the recommendation of The Foundation’s staff.
Community Impact (Unrestricted)
Community Impact Funds meet the greatest needs of the community. The Foundation has unlimited discretion to award grants from these funds to address critical issues.
Field of Interest
Field of Interest Funds are those in which donors have determined a general area of interest, such as geographic community or field of endeavor, which they wish to support. The Foundation has wide discretion to award grants within the specified field of interest.
Awarded by donor recommendation after board approval and staff due diligence are completed.
Designated
Designated funds name specific organizations as recipients. Should an organization go out of existence, The Foundation has power to redirect these grants to other organizations closely matching the donor’s original intent.
Organizational Endowment
OE Funds are distributions to nearly 100 nonprofits that have chosen The Foundation to administer endowments.
Donor Advised
Donor Advised Funds have advisors who recommend specific organizations. The Foundations performs due diligence on their recommendations and has the ultimate authority to accept or reject these recommendations.
Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded to academic institutions to assist deserving students meeting the criteria established by the funds’ founders.

KEY TO GRANT LISTING * Indicates organizations receiving support through our Discretionary Grants process Those receiving General Operating Support through our Discretionary Grant Process have met TPF’s best practice standards for the organization’s developmental stages. These include:
Core Program Development Stage -- Organizations with a set of programs that are central to mission success and which have begun achieving consistent results for those being served. Infrastructure Development Stage -- Organizations with the infrastructure necessary to support core programs and which are growing to scale.
Mission Impact Stage -- Organizations achieving mission impact through programs, organizational leadership, strategic partnerships, advocacy efforts and collaboration.
Transition/Renewal Stage -- Organizations undergoing a significant leadership transition or shift in constituents or role that requires re-evaluating the organization’s structure, mission, and purpose.
Consolidation Stage -- For organizations ready to dissolve or merge with another organization.
