CONTRIBUTORS TO PHILADELPHIA’S HAITI FUND RELIEF AT THE PHILADELPHIA FOUNDATION “This foundation is the right one that could get the work done. I am very grateful for the good work of yours.” – James, Huntingdon, Pa. The devastation caused by the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 led to an unprecedented outpouring of support from Southeastern Pennsylvania donors. The initiative promoted through The Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and philly.com generated contributions ranging from $2.67 to the $10,000 establishing gift. In all, it raised nearly $150,000 ($149,698.15) that came through 1,503 cash and check donations and 163 online gifts from 987 individuals, families, businesses and organizations. Supporters shared why they felt compelled to help in heartfelt notes that were sent with the donations, some of which are excerpted in the following pages. Thanks to that generosity, grants were made to support Haiti’s immediate and ongoing needs, such as clean water and much-needed shelter. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross and Catholic Relief Services each received $69,419 for their work in Haiti and the Lamp for Haiti Foundation received $10,860. The fund serves as a prime example of how The Philadelphia Foundation can aggregate donor contributions so that they have a significant and lasting impact, not just locally, but internationally.
