We are pleased to share these Stories of Impact – updates about the ways our funds have made a difference throughout the region!

In many ways, ours is an old story -- one dating to 1918, when we were established to provide wise stewardship of philanthropic dollars, generosity well spent through a wide range of charitable funds, and the enduring impact of grants made by those funds.

Each year, though, the story is made fresh, as a brand new set of nonprofits receive grants and scholarships that allow them to provide much needed services. Supporting this work today are more than 900 component funds, each with a purpose and vision as individual as those who established it.

The flexibility of Donor Advised Funds make them an effective way for family members, businesses and friends to give together.

In doing so, they may choose to honor a loved one or someone who has passed away. Donor Advised Funds are also cost-effective and time-saving alternatives to private foundations.

AWARDING OF GRANTS IN 2013 After matching the intent of our fund-holders with the needs of the community and performing due diligence on the recipient organizations, we awarded grants totaling $20.7 million to 1,236 organizations.

The discretionary funds available for The Foundation’s staff to grant to nonprofits that serve the region’s most vulnerable populations provide General Operating Support along with funding to strengthen their overall operations.

Among those who benefited from the grant was Connie Morrow, who lives in Eastern North Philadelphia. Her home is situated between a long abandoned home and vacant lot that has become a major dumping site. Concerned by blight, Connie joined WCRP’s Advocacy Committee and has become a leader on the issue of vacant land. Her growth in leadership stems in part from support received through The Philadelphia Foundation.

Some fund-founders make their fund’s purpose specific in order to focus their grantmaking around established interests or to support nonprofits working toward a particular goal.

Establishing a Scholarship Fund is a meaningful way to honor someone who has made a special difference in your life while helping others to achieve their educational dreams at any level of study from pre-school to post-graduate. Our four different scholarship options include funding a specific school, a particular college major, being part of a committee that reviews applicants, or having us manage the entire process.

ABOUT THIS FUND Jane Biberman, an accomplished equestrian and all-around animal lover, established Katie’s Fund to memorialize her precious Shetland Sheepdog, Katie. She explains that whenever she is sad about Katie’s death, she focuses on all the good Katie’s Fund has accomplished.

With the assistance and support of our Donor Services staff, Jane researches organizations for potential funding, sometimes visiting them to see their operations in action. Among the many recent beneficiaries have been the Grey Muzzle Organization, Mylestone Equine Rescue, Puppies Behind Bars, Penn Vet Working Dog Center and Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Facility Dog Assisted Therapy Program.

So when her grateful daughter wanted both to honor her mother and to perpetuate the benefits of the kind of education and mentoring she had received from her parents, Olenga established an endowed scholarship fund in her mother’s name as a Christmas present. The fund now supports Philadelphia Futures, which helps inner-city students succeed in college and beyond.

Olenga learned about Philadelphia Futures, which prepares students from low-income families to enter and succeed in college through a combination of mentoring, academic enrichment, college guidance and financial incentives.

THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES “The funds are a critical piece of the student’s overall financial aid resources,” said Joan Mazzotti, Philadelphia Futures Executive Director.

Beginning around the end of ninth grade, an award is made to a specific student. “Knowing that the sponsorship exists is a powerful incentive for the student while in high school,” Mazzotti noted. Once in college, the students continue to receive mentoring and guidance services and must meet with their Philadelphia Futures advisor prior to the beginning of each semester. If the student is making satisfactory progress, the funds for the next semester are disbursed. Olenga has further fulfilled her personal commitment by serving as a mentor to a Philadelphia Futures participant.

A Designated Fund allows you to name one or more nonprofits you wish to permanently support. It is an effective way to perpetually give to an organization that matters to you. Some of our oldest funds were established as Designated Funds to reflect the interests and causes that mattered most to the fund founders, often as part of their estate planning. They will continue to make annual awards in support of those causes.

A Designated Fund could support an organization for which you’ve been a volunteer, a board member or a long-time annual supporter.

This type of fund can also help an effective nonprofit that is relatively new to achieve the next level of growth as it becomes a respected community institution. Each year, our Designated Funds support dozens of camps, churches, hospitals and community centers.

Those who knew Andrea R. Falcone remember a remarkable woman: a loving wife, model mother and community service leader constantly engaged in fundraising and community service for many worthy causes. Andrea was an active church member and very strong in her faith, ensuring that her family grew in the same manner. An entrepreneur in its truest sense, she built a thriving employee benefits consulting firm from the ground up.

Andrea thought she had overcome ovarian cancer in 1993, but the disease reoccurred in 1999. She died on Valentine’s Day 2000 at the age of 48. Andrea’s very last request was to continue the fight against ovarian cancer, a wish that her family and friends honored by endowing this fund.

Andrea’s legacy continues in the lives she touched and in the contributions that are made annually in her memory to ovarian cancer research.

An OE is a commitment to the future: the nonprofit has set financial resources aside to grow over time and sustain its ongoing work. A key benefit of the Burlington County College Endowment Fund is that it allows the college to offer its supporters access to sophisticated estate planning tools. These include Charitable Gift Annuities, which allow individuals to receive annual income, some of which is tax-free, while also building resources for Burlington County College.

ABOUT THIS FUND Malinda R. Farrow was born in Shamokin, Pa., in 1929 – an only child who remained close to her parents. Private by nature, she collected figurines and was an avid reader. In 1968, she moved with her family to the shore community of Deal, N.J., where she lived until her death.

During her lifetime, she regularly contributed to community causes, such as her alma mater, Shamokin High School, the local police and fire departments and her church.

In making distributions from her fund, The Foundation gives preference to her church, two Northern New Jersey hospitals and to a wide range of interests she expressed during her lifetime. The fund also supports grants to strengthen nonprofits that are awarded through The Foundation’s competitive discretionary grants process. Community organizations apply for the funding, and The Foundation’s professional staff makes recommendations to the Board of Managers.

Establishing the fund allowed her to quietly support organizations serving immigrants.

ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT FOR IMMIGRANTS

Juntos serves Mexican and other Latino immigrants in South Philadelphia to help them develop tools to advance economically and integrate into the social fabric of the city. The Immigrant Education Fund’s 2013 grant allowed the organization to provide aid and access for immigrants in their pursuit of secondary education.

An Unrestricted Fund allows The Philadelphia Foundation to address the community’s greatest needs. Grants are awarded upon recommendation of The Foundation’s professional staff and approval of the Board of Managers. Many of the problems that make headlines today didn’t exist in prior years. While we cannot foresee the future, being able to respond to the situation is crucial if our region is to sustain its current quality of life.

We reviewed 223 applications for discretionary funding, 17 applications for funding through the Nonprofit Board Leadership Institute (which we co-manage with the regional United Way), 24 applications for recognition through the H. Craig Lewis Good Governance Award and 71 applications for support through our YOUTHadelphia teen philanthropy program – 335 grant applications in total.

We provided $108,471 to 54 recipients through the Ellis Fund, which serves individuals experiencing catastrophic medical circumstances.

We processed 367 scholarship applications and supported 276 recipients who attended 92 separate colleges and universities.

•

Through partnerships between our fund-holders and other foundations, $199,500 was co-invested in community projects and initiatives strengthening nonprofits.

We brought regional and national funders together to explore development of a pooled strategic partnership fund to support organizations interested in working together.

It’s all part of our ongoing work to support well-run, well-staffed, well-governed nonprofits that take the time to evaluate their work and plan for their future. We do this because nonprofits teach our children, train our future workforce, heal us, entertain and inspire us, preserve our natural spaces and provide social services.
