UPHSD and UiTM strengthen partnership through the ASEAN Young Engineers Summit

To showcase the capabilities and knowledge of engineering students from the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT) of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA and the engineering students

from the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) of Malaysia, they held a five-day Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) Young Engineers Summit last August 25 to 29, 2023.

Aside from forging further partnership between the two universities, the ASEAN Young Engineers

Summit 2023: Community Enhancement Towards Global Marketable and Renowned University aimed to address engineering problems and provide solutions that will benefit the Philippines and Malaysia. The event mainly discussed the five emerging issues in both countries: education, eco-

nomics, environment, security, and technology.

Since the engineers are facing different challenges from sustainable development, climate resiliency, and geopolitical concerns, the Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines, Mr. Dato' Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino bin Anthony, said that these obstacles could be an opportunity for them to showcase their abilities.

During the ASEAN Declaration, both universities declared their dedication to fostering international collaboration through high-impact projects addressing global issues while sharing one commitment to advancing innovation and sustainable development across borders. "Building the future is indeed a heavy responsibility, but I have faith and confidence that you [future engineers] will be able to forge a strong road or a bridge that will bring us to the future that we are dreaming of; together, we can do that," Mr. Abdul Castelino stated in his message of inspiration during the ASEAN Declaration on August 29, 2023, at the UPHSD CITHM Lobby.

Afzan Binti Irwan Shah, Program Director of UiTM. Throughout the summit, delegates and professors from UiTM engaged in a Tagaytay City tour, an outside campus activity of UPHSD, and an excursion in Manila with Ar. David Romualdez, Chairperson of the Department of Architecture of UPHSD. Both the opening ceremony and the ASEAN Young Engineers Forum was held at Alta D' Tagaytay. Dr. Mohamad Huzaimy Jusoh, Associate Professor of UiTM, Dr. Lorena Ilagan, MSECE, PECE, PhD, Dean of the CEAT at UPHSD, Dr. Gabriel Archemedez Flores, Planning and Linkages Director of UPHSD, and Dr. Marjorie Gutierrez-Tangog, UPHSD's Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, graced the event.

Moreover, UiTM participants and ten University students went to the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City for a community service activity, followed by the launching of the ASEAN Declaration in the Las Pinas Campus. A cultural night was held wherein students from both universities showcased their cultural dances.

UPHSD welcomes school year 23-24 with Salubong Perpetualista

A vibrant festivity filled with booths and fun activities welcomed the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA - Las Piñas Campus students as Salubong Perpetualista took place last September 13-14, 2023.

"Welcome to your new home.

You are now officially members of the University of Perpetual Help Family," Dr. Arnaldo S. De Guzman, the School Director, stated in his inspirational message as he warmly greeted the first-year students and transferees.

Hundreds of students strode around the field and across University Lane, making history as they participated in Perpetual's first-ever Freshmen Walk. Flag bearers led the walk from the College of Maritime Education as they carried the flag of the different colleges.

bong Perpetualista, a major event organized by the Supreme Student Council (SSC). The SSC, together with the College Student Councils (CSC) and The Perpetualite, partnered up and prepared their respective booths to create a hospitable environment for new students.

In an interview, Patricia Montañez, a first-year student under BS in Hospitality Management program, expressed her enthusiasm for Salubong Perpetualista. "Sobrang enjoy kasi hindi ko in-expect na ganito pala sa Perpetual and this is my first time sa ganitong [event], kasi ever since, walang ganito sa school namin,” she said.

Moreover, Dr. Marjorie S. Gutierrez-Tangog, the Executive Vice President, several college deans, and staff graced the Gymnasium 2 as they conveyed their heartfelt messages to the new students.

The preparation of Salubong Perpetualista was 'tiring yet also fulfilling,' as described by Joe Basty Adriano, the SSC President, and the event's chairperson. He explained how the SSC planned Salubong Perpetualista for the sake of the first-year students and transferees to give them a formal yet fun introduction to UPHSD. Furthermore, Adriano assured that no matter what challenges the students encounter in Perpetual, all college councils and organizations will assist the students.

The Christmas season is just around the corner and anticipation is in the air. We Filipinos have probably the longest Christmas Season in the world.

This is probably because Christmas means many happy things to us.

Christmas is a time for celebration. It is a time to deck out our homes with colorful Christmas decor. It is a time for shopping for gifts and planning happy gatherings with friends and family. It is a time when families come together to gather in faith, hope, and thanks for all the blessings bestowed on us by our Lord Jesus in the past year.

Christmas is also a time for reflection, to look back at the challenges we faced, and celebrate our triumphs. We have all gone through many ups and downs this year. And yet here we are. Our faith is stronger and we

are wiser, more resilient, and ready to face the challenges of the coming New Year. As we await the New Year, this is a time for us to reflect and learn the lessons that we need to learn to become better students, better sons and daughters to our parents, better siblings, better citizens, and better Christians.

Christmas is also a time of inspiration as we should take inspiration from the life Christ led. It was a life of service and inspiration to those in need. In turn, let us emulate his example by being an inspiration to others, especially as we face the challenges our future holds. Jesus Christ preached love for one another and unity. Let us be inspired by His example and continue to come together and work as a family. I believe we will all derive strength, faith, and inspiration from our unity as members of the Perpetualite family.

Let us never forget the reason

for the season: the birth of Jesus Christ who came into this world to save us all. Let us remain steadfast in our faith. And let us keep Him in our hearts not only during the Christmas season but all throughout the year.

So from my family to all of yours, a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all.

UPHSD Las Piñas and Molino Campus hosts the MLBB Tournament

By Nica Lauren Pancho With the goal of enhancing camaraderie, creating bonds, and cultivating friendships, the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA's Las Piñas collaborated with Molino Campus to organize the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) Tournament at SOMO - A Vista Mall last July 7, 2023.

The two campuses partnered with three representatives from the College of Computer Studies (CCS) Las Piñas Campus who all worked as facilitators of the event. The tournament took place amidst summer vacation and was broadcast live via Facebook and YouTube. It gathered 16 teams, comprising participants from Grade 9 to 12 students from various schools in Las Piñas and Cavite.

All teams partook in the process of elimination, determining the top three teams of the overall competition. Ronskirt N Friends, from St.

Matthew Academy of Cavite, emerged as the tournament champions, winning 12,000 pesos after performing a clean sweep (3-0) in the championship round. Meanwhile, ROCK AOT AGE from Lyceum of Alabang took home the first runner-up and 9,000 pesos, and School Boys from four different academic institutions won as the second runner-up with the cash prize of 6,000 pesos.

Scaling in MLBB refers to the rate at which a hero is able to get stronger during the game. Ronskirt N Friends focused on scaling as they rose to the top of the competition, defeating their opponents with powerful team effort and solid coordination.

Diaz, an incoming Grade 12 student from the Las Piñas Campus, described his experience as one of the members of team Negative Two. “Since it was our first LAN [Local Area Network] tournament, it was kind of an exciting yet nervous feeling knowing that we were most likely underdogs in the tournament. The overall experience we got was great, the staff were nice, and the environment was nice, especially the place,” Diaz shared.

Meanwhile Reynaldo Cuevas Jr., CCS-SC Vice President and James Wendel M. Decipeda, CCS-SC Public Relations Officer, both served as the shoutcasters of the event. sharpen their skills and further develop as student leaders. "Since we have available time, we accepted it excitedly and prepared ourselves to be one of the facilitators of the event by brainstorming the concerns we need to improve and to avoid technical errors," he stated.

When asked if Diaz would join again if the University will hold the same event next school year, he answered, “I would definitely give it a shot again with the same teammates from the last tournament… We are looking forward to next year.”

demonstrate their fighting spirit in U-Perps Rally 2023

The Perpetualite community gathered for the Perps Rally 2023 to send off the Perpetual ALTAS athletes before stepping into the NCAA Season 99 last September 15, 2023, at the University Gymnasium 2.

The Sports Department organized the annual event and co-facilitated by the ALTAS Perpsquad to show enlivening support to the athletes, coaches, and staff that guide each team. As this year's NCAA season kicks off, Perps Rally also introduces a new Perpetual sports team to its regular lineup. For the first time, UPHSD has a dedicated E-Sports team ready to battle it out this NCAA Season 99. With the guidance of the team captain, James Wendel Decipeda, the ALTAS E-Sports team will compete in the Mobile Legends Bang Bang game.

Showing up as one of the event's special guests, Thompson expressed that he is proud to support the ALTAS Basketball team and he is looking forward to working with them. Meanwhile, the University's Executive Vice President, Dr. Marjorie S. Gutierrez-Tangog, reminded the players to enjoy the game and possess discipline and sportsmanship. She also added that they should develop their physical and essential life skills as they sharpen their ability to balance their academics, practices, and personal lives.

"Savor our victories, learn from our setbacks, and always play with heart and passion like the true Perpetualite we are."

Furthermore, a Perpetualite alumnus and 'The Clash' grand champion, Jeremiah Tiangco, serenaded the crowd with SWV's Weak and South Border's Rainbow and Ikaw Nga to entertain and enliven the crowd.

The ALTAS Perpsquad also joined and performed various songs and acts from the movie "Pitch Perfect," and presented a breathtaking exhibition. They

were later joined by the other sports teams, who danced to trendy remixes to demonstrate their utmost appreciation for the Perpetualite community. Justin Giatao, the team captain of the ALTAS Perpsquad, also encouraged the audience to execute the cheers to be performed in the upcoming NCAA games, which include "Shoot That Ball," "Defense," and "Let's Go Altas!"

Gusi Jr., the coordinator of the Sports Department; and Ms. Joanna Bello, the Supreme Student Council (SSC) Adviser; were present during the event along with other executives and faculty members. The crowd also consisted of students from colleges of Maritime Education, Pharmacy, Arts and Sciences, Computer Studies, and Radiologic Technology.

SSC gathers Perpetualite Student Leaders for PSLA and PLTS 2023

With the goal of empowering student leaders to excel in their roles and make a positive impact, the Supreme Student Council (SSC) of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA - Las Piñas Campus facilitated this year’s Perpetualite Student Leaders’ Assembly (PSLA) and Perpetualite Leadership Training Seminar (PLTS) last July and August 2023.

According to Ms. Bona Mae B. Tiongson, the Executive Director of Student Affairs and Services (SAS), this leadership training aims to let the student leaders experience a macro-level scope of leadership.

With the theme “EXPLORE: EXpanding Possibilities, Leading with Optimism to Realms of Excellence,” this year’s PSLA gathered 109 student leaders from different councils and organizations at the College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management (CITHM) Lobby last July 11-14, 2023.

Dr. Marjorie S. Gutierrez-Tangog, the University’s Executive Vice President, and Mr. Jairus B. Panlilio, an SSC alumnus from Batch 2020 to 2022, were present at the event as resource speakers. They shared valuable insights about leadership, overcoming challenges, and going beyond what it takes for the participants to lead.

Furthermore, the PSLA also had interactive workshops, team building activity, PSL Night, and tree planting activity conducted in Barangay San Francisco, Lipa City, Batangas, where they planted an estimated 150 seeds.

After proceeding with the PSL’s assembly, the college student council presidents participated in the SSC’s annual tradition called PLTS and elected a new batch of officers last

August 21-22, held at the Sol Y Viento Hotels and Resorts, Pansol Laguna.

The new batch of SSC officers for the academic year 20232024 has been elected at the end of the event, and the following are: Joe Basty Adriano, from the College of Arts and Sciences (President); Thania Marie Yabut, from the College of Education (Vice-President); Salk Bolusan, from the College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management (Secretary); Christian Geguiento, from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (Treasurer); Reynaldo Cuevas Jr., from the College of Computer Studies (Auditor); Pol Miguelle Calara, from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (Business Manager); and Gwenice Lauryssa Paguio, from the College of Medical Technology (Public Relations Officer).

Bearing the theme “EXPLORE: Empower Motivating Perpetualites Offering Wisdom, and Engaging Responsibly,” the event brought another set of challenging activities for the student leaders, which included a higher level of team building and another SSC Alumni Talk, but this time, the leaders had a chance to recuperate as they were given the time to swim for two days.

Ms. Joanna Faith Bello, SSC adviser and the Coordinator of Student Organizations and

Activities (SOA), shared her long-term experience in handling different batches of SSC and stated two essential things she expects from the new set of officers. “Progress and being consistent, ‘yan lang ‘yung two words na sinasabi ko sa lahat. Progress dapat you have to move forward, dapat may progress na ginagawa, tapos consistency naman, kung gaano sila kagaling from the start, dapat mapakita pa rin nila ‘yan hanggang dulo,” she said.

Meanwhile, Joe Basty Adriano, the incoming SSC president, vows to strengthen the collaboration and connectivity of each student council and as well as sectoral organizations to provide more engaging activities for the student body. “I will offer myself, my time, my talent, and skills to give back to our Perpetualite community, and also the willingness to learn about the process and culture that I need to discover more about Perpetual.”

In the pursuit of providing impeccable campus journalism services to the Perpetualite community, The Perpetualite (TP) bagged second place in the Best Photo News Category and an honorable mention for the News Writing Category during the Organization of Student Services Educators Inc. (OSSEI) National Training Workshop on Campus Journalism at the Crown Legacy Hotel, Baguio City last September 28-30, 2023.

TP’s winning photo was captured by one of its senior photographers, John Genson Buot, a third-year student from Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT), for the news article “CES, COD conducts affordable dental services to Perpetualites.” Meanwhile, The Perpetualite's Incoming Managing and Features Editor Erica Mae Tamparong, a fourth-year student from Bachelor of Arts in Communication (AB COMM), received an honorable mention for the News Writing category on her article "A walk to a small community: The tiny wishes of Surigaonon."

With the goal of delivering quality news and campus journalism to the Perpetualite community, TP participated in the three-day event, including its Editorial Board members namely; Ma. Angel Nicole Rondez, Incoming Editor-in-Chief, Erica Mae Tamparong, Incoming Managing and Features Editor, Justin Isaac D. Uy, Chief Photographer, Sean Paolo V. Resente, Incoming Chief Artist, Paola P. Rigor, Incoming Literary and Forum Editor, Nica Pancho, and Ms. Rowena G. Morta, Adviser, “Joining the OSSEI competition was a great experience; not

only did the resource speakers present many eye-opening lessons, but most importantly, I experienced conversing with other campus journalists from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Also, I didn’t expect to bring home such an award because the competition is on a national level, but receiving an honorable mention is truly a blessing for me. I want to thank our adviser, Ms. Weng Morta, and my co-editorial board for guiding and supporting me all throughout,” Tamparong shared.

After the pandemic, the OSSEI returned to its in-person annual training workshop, gathering 38 colleges and universities from all over the country. It did not only provide intensive training in campus journalism, but they also gave an in-depth discussion to timely issues surrounding journalism.

They were able to tackle topics such as ethical dilemmas, multimedia journalism, fake news, advertorials, editorial cartooning, page design, and layout. Mr. Ed Lingao, even left a note that made the students think of what real journalism is, stating “Credibility is just what people say we are, but ethics is what we are because ethics is a judgment call, that in the end will test our value system.”

Moreover, veteran journalists and professors also graced the event including; Mr. Ed Lingao, TV5 Chief Correspondent, Prof.

Ben Domingo Jr., CHED Technical Committee for Journalism, Prof. Liana Barro; Mr. Jimmy Domingo, Visual Journalist; Mr. Melvin Gascon from the Philippine Daily Inquirer; Mr. Ever Samson from the Department of Education; Prof. Regidor Gaboy from the Central Luzon State University; and Ms. Joyce Panares, from the Manila Standard.

ALTAS Valor passes technical inspection at Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2023

After four years of hard work and perseverance, the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA's ALTAS Valor brought the Philippines back on track at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2023 (SEM 2023) after passing the detailed technical inspection last July 7, 2023. The vehicle-building competition for energy efficiency took place in Lombok, Indonesia.

Shell Eco-marathon is an academic program and competition where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students across the globe can contribute to attaining a sustainable and lower carbon future by designing energy-efficient vehicles. SEM 2023 took place at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit in Lombok, Indonesia, from July 4 to 9, 2023, where 76 teams from 13 countries came to present their vehicles.

ALTAS Valor’s five-person team of engineering students included Jacob Moises Torres, Emelito Jr. Montano, Mark Angelo Jacinto, Reiven Christian Pagtakhan, and Evan Anthony Gindoy. Representing the Philippines alongside the team were the PUP Hygears of

the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Manila (PUP).

With the primary guidance of the two faculty members from the Engineering Department, Engr. Joebert Guzon and Engr.

Noel Gatbonton, the team created an automatic engine powered

by Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the most fuel-efficient engine in the Philippines.

The vehicle was named 'Avalon' and built with a carbon fiber body and aluminum chassis. Avalon was constructed in 2019 and underwent roughly four months of repair and maintenance before being transported to Indonesia. It arrived last July 4, 2023, and was set to compete under the Prototype Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) category.

"It is an event that inspires the exchange of ideas," Engr. Joebert Guzon said in an interview. "They learn from us. We learn from them. It also inspires the formation of friendships and provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

All participating teams must pass the technical inspection stage in this competition before advancing to the race track. During the final hour of the scheduled technical inspection, the UPHSD team encountered a brake sys-

tem problem—fortunately, the S.U. Racing Team from Kazakhstan assisted in fixing the vehicle's brakes, allowing ALTAS Valor to pass the inspection and represent the Philippines on July 8, 2023.

The team passed technical inspections in 12 categories and completed three of four laps before running out of gas. Winners of the Prototype ICE category were hailed from Thailand and Indonesia.

Jacob Moises Torres, the team’s current team manager, shared his thoughts on their recent achievements. “It is an honor [to compete] sa ganoong klaseng event, and I’m very proud na naging team ALTAS Valor ako at the same time naging representative rin ng team Philippines.”

tion but failed to hit the track due to time constraints. However, because of the pandemic, plans to participate in succeeding competitions came to a screeching halt.

Currently, the team plans to rehabilitate Avalon by conducting tests, gathering data on the ve-

hicle's efficiency, and upgrading certain parts such as the transmission, engine, and suspension, depending on possible changes to the rules. Furthermore, they aim to build another vehicle to compete under the Urban Concept ICE category.

With this, the ALTAS Valor team's journey in creating and sustaining energy-efficient vehicles continues.

The Perpetualite joins PSC’s Women’s Indoor and Para Games Festival

In order to go through the real practice of journalism, The Perpetualite, represented the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC) Women's Indoor and Para Games Festival at the PhilSports Complex, Pasig City, last July 14-21, 2023.

With the theme "123 Dash to the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games,” the event aimed to unite, support, and strengthen Filipina athletes from every sport, as stated by PSC's Commissioner Olivia 'Bong' G. Coo in her opening message. The festival gathered over 400 athletes and sports officials from various sports, including bowling, chess, para-chess, fencing, netball, athletics, and para-athletics.

Organized by the PSC, two campus journalists participated in the eight-day event; Ellah Escasa, Senior Writer; and Erica Mae Tamparong, Incoming Managing and Features Editor of The Perpetualite.

Escasa and Tamparong were trained and guided by notable sports journalists namely: Mr. Randy Caluag (Manila Standard), Mr. June Navarro (Inquirer), and Mr. Lito Oredo (Abante).

When asked about their experiences, Escasa shared, “Sobrang fulfilling talaga, kasi 'yung opportunity na 'yun bihira lang eh, and as a student journalist and aspiring journalist, sobrang saya na maka-attend ng ganitong klaseng

event." She added, "We were treated like a real journalist, 'yung tipong we are free to write our own stories, to create our own concept.”

"To experience a big event like this was a great blessing for me. It exposed me to a new and wide environment and brought me closer to the peak of the mountain I am trying to climb—my dream career. Also, I got to experience meeting significant people, but most importantly, I was able to build connections with other people," said Tamparong.

Escasa and Tamparong previously attended PSC’s event last April entitled “Journalist on Training: Filipinas Sports Media Seminar,” with the objective of encouraging female journalists into the field of writing sports news, making them qualified for the following event. Both events are projects under Commissioner Bong Coo, who is very vocal about wanting to increase women's involvement and camaraderie in every competition. Since sports news writing and sports, in general, are often male-dominated, this project aims to highlight women in both fields.

The Women's Indoor and Para Games Festival also served as one of PSC's early preparations for the 2024 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG). AIMAG, originally scheduled to be held in Bangkok from November 17 to 26, has been rescheduled to February 24 to March 8 next year.

In line with the 51st anniversary of Medical Technology Week of the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists, Inc. (PAMET, Inc.) and the National Seafarers' Day celebration, the College of Medical Technology (CMDT) and the College of Maritime Education (CME) commenced their college days last September 2023.

With the theme "Navigating the Future of Medical Technology with Cohesive Collaboration and Transparency," the UPHSD Medical Technology Days took place from September 20 to 21. It was organized by the College of Medical Technology Student Council (CMDTSC), headed by its President, Anita Merin and their adviser, Mr. Jethro S. Dalagan.

"Today, we not only honor the past achievements but also inspire and challenge yourselves to reach for new heights to find innovative solutions and to pioneer advancements that will undoubtedly shape the future of healthcare," said Ms. Lily Aileen Alinao, the officer-in-charge of CMDT. Moreover, Merin, CMDTSC President, also shared that the annual event "provides a venue for raising awareness and the advantage it provides in the healthcare field."

The celebration was highlighted by the following activities: a blood typing booth and a science exhibition that showcased different types of laboratory apparatuses and research in Hematology, Bacteriology, and Parasitology. This year's blood typing booth was themed "Unlock the ABO of You: Type with Pride, Save a Life Inside."

Meanwhile, to showcase the maritime students' talents, strengths, and intelligence, CME held its 28th Maritime Days from September 27 to 29, 2023, as part of their celebration for National Seafarers' Day. Bannering the

theme, "Navigating and Looking Beyond the Horizon for Responsible Maritime Explorations," Maritime Days was filled with activities for all students to enjoy.

The College of Maritime Education Student Council (CMESC) organized the event, together with the guidance of their adviser, Mr. Michael Burgos. Maritime Days featured various competitions and programs, including a Mobile Legends Tournament, a Banca Making Contest, sports competitions, a boodle fight, and Mr. and Ms. Maritime 2023.

Ely Ynigo Calacday and Juliana Jade Cacapit, both first-year BS in

Marine Transportation students, were crowned Mr. and Ms. Maritime 2023, respectively. Besides winning the title, Cacapit also bagged the Best in Uniform Attire award.

Furthermore, Roscales also described in an interview how challenging it was for the MESC to prepare the entire event. But their hard work paid off in the end, seeing the enjoyment of the cadets.

“Worth it po talaga [yung] puyat at pagod namin dahil naging successful and memorable ang event at nakita rin namin kung paano nag enjoy ang mga students/cadets sa event," Roscales expressed.

UPHSD holds 44th graduation rites under the new normal

The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA - Las Piñas Campus held its 44th Commencement Exercise, with the theme “Wholistic Approach Towards Excellence and Resurgence,” last August 2, 2023, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

The honorable Senator of the Republic of the Philippines, Grace Poe-Llamanzares, was the event’s commencement speaker who congratulated students and parents. “Today, you will receive your degrees, and these are your golden ticket to the future. As has been said before, education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepared for it today,” Sen. Poe-Llamanzares said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board, CEO and Founder DR/ BGEN Antonio Laperal Tamayo, expressed his support and appreciation to the graduates in an inspirational message, stating, “May the Lord bless you as you take your new role, believe in what you can do, and what you can achieve, and may you always carry the character of a true Perpetualite.”

From Jan Patrick Arcilla’s perspective, a firstyear Medical Technology student, he is honored to be given the chance to become one of the faces of the university as he also serves as a role model to the students. As he said, it is a great responsibility that helps boost the school

spirit and engagement.

He also shared that being an extrovert is not necessary to become a brand ambassador, but for him, what matters most is the confidence one has within oneself and how one represents the brand.

Aside from getting countless smiles from

the photo shoots, Arcilla noted that he has a long career in this field as he has already built a family with the marketing team.

“They treat you not only as a brand ambassador but also their family,” Arcilla expressed when asked about his best moment in this career.

For Dilton Andrei Bautista, a first-year Architecture student, he believes that professionalism is what sets the standard for being a good ambassador.

As he said, bringing up the university's name is already a significant factor.

“As one of the faces of this school, I make them feel like we, the brand ambassadors, are approachable

and always willing to hear what other people want to say.” For him, interactions with people are inevitable, which is one reason why he needs to be cautious with his actions. “The trait you need to be a good brand ambassador is professionalism because you are bringing their organization and their goal as part of it. You will have interactions with

people, and you must show that you care about other people's feelings and ideas,” he added.

Although he is only new to this career, Bautista knew that it was not going to be an easy path, but for him, proper time management and dedication can be his great recipe toward having his journey as a brand ambassador.

Riding the waves of success: How ONE PIECE live-action shivered our timbers

The Netflix live adaptation of One Piece has taken the world by storm and has conquered seven continents. Viewers became impressed by the streaming platform's faithful reliance on Eiichiro Oda's manga, shattering their reputation notorious for producing what fans deem as terrible live actions. One Piece has been generating much buzz on social media lately, but what makes its live adaptation so successful?

One Piece tells the captivating tale of a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy who dreams of becoming the King of the Pirates.

The quest is challenging as they encounter marines, sea monsters, bizarre creatures, and other pirates who also yearn to find the marvelous treasure. Their journey is riddled with tension, drama, and excitement as they engage in thrilling battles that leave the fans in awe.

This series was first published in July 1997 and has been dominating the manga scene ever since.

It became the best-selling manga and Japanese comic series in history, selling over 500 million copies worldwide. Millions of people fell in love with the story, making them naturally fall for a grand

live-action movie that was years in the making and premiered on Netflix on August 31, 2023.

The first season of the live adaptation showed how Luffy, played

by Iñaki Godoy, met his crewmates, such as Nami and Sanji, who were portrayed by Emily Rudd and Taz Skylar, respectively. The actors seem to have great chemistry, and their skillful portrayal brought the manga to life, effectively bringing the spirit of One Piece to the screen. Actors such as Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp) and the actors for the villains like Jeff Ward (Buggy), Steven John Ward (Dracule Mihawk), and Alexander Maniatis (Kuro) have received widespread appreciation and adoration from

fans.

Not only are the characters greatly brought together, but the set designs made it even more realistic, aiming to represent the animation as accurately as possible.

The details in each set are impressive, such as the scale and the level of detail found in Baratie. Every painting in Baratie pictured a location in One Piece's world. Did you know that Gaimon, a former pirate now residing on the Island of Rare Animals, was in one of the paintings? The production designers also dedicated significant effort to crafting the goat figurehead in Going Merry because if it followed the original design in the manga, it would look cartoonish and out of place.

In addition, the live-action cinematography and videography are delicately constructed, and the soundtrack captures the intended tone and mood of each scene.

The producers ascertained that throughout the episode's progression, they can seamlessly transition flashbacks into specific scenes that reveal the major characters' background story. Also, this live-action has been brought to life with much success due to the choreography of the fight scenes, delivering stellar performances in every fight sequence. Wanting the battles to be as authentic as possible, the cast arduously trained and practiced the fighting styles of their assigned character, illustrating different martial arts skills such as karate and swordsmanship. For his portrayal as Usopp, Jacob Romero even had to learn marksmanship to properly use the slingshot, which is Usopp's signature weapon.

But despite how well the live-action flourished for most viewers, some fans still expressed their disappointment as there were deviations from the manga's original plot. One significant difference was the portrayal of Merry's

character. Also, some fans have voiced their concerns, claiming that Zoro's character, played by Mackenyu Arata, is too restrained and lacks the depth of emotion and personality that the character represents in the original manga, where he is portrayed as a multifaceted figure surpassing basic cool and edgy traits. Conversely, the live-action also visualizes how Zoro rejected the Baroque Works organization during the Romance Dawn Arc. This scene hyped the fans, as this was only mentioned in the manga.

Despite the playful and fun atmosphere, the creation of the One Piece live adaptation is no joke.

Due to the rapid improvement of computer graphics and visual effects, the doors of opportunity opened for Oda-Sensei as he officially gave the green light to develop one of the most expensive series that Netflix has ever produced.

The anime version has over a thousand episodes, which can be overwhelming for newcomers, but this live-action is also designed for those who have not seen the manga yet, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the staff and cast for ensuring that they were able to showcase Oda's imaginative world that can be watched by fans and non-fans alike.

Following its massive popularity and positive reviews, it is no surprise that Netflix has renewed the One Piece live adaptation for another season. It is safe to say that everyone can definitely expect to see new characters, enemies, places, and swashbuckling adventures of the live-action Straw Hats in the future.

Gento ang Pagtatag! The SB19 Way: One Leap at a Time

Sound Break 19 (SB19), the five-member Filipino boy band composed of Pablo, Stell, Ken, Justin, and Josh, has once again proved that they are indeed the ‘P-pop Kings,’ just as their fans have called them, through their recent world tour: Pagtatag! The tour kicked off at the Araneta Coliseum and passed through many cities across the Philippines, the United States, and Canada. The quintet performed a total of 14 shows in roughly two months, commencing on June 24 in Quezon City and concluding on August 20 in Edmonton, Alberta.

SB19’s journey to stardom began in September 2019 when a viral tweet with their Go Up Dance Practice Video from a netizen named Lyra surfaced on the internet. These five virtual un-

knowns became internet sensations overnight, saving them from their supposed bowing out. Before long, the lukewarm reception of their debut single, “Tilaluha” was replaced with mainstream prominence by their follow-up single, “Go Up.” Through time, their fan base, which they lovingly called “A’TIN,” grew locally and overseas.

Armed with Filipino pride, the boys conquered the world, churning out 12 hit singles, seven promotional singles, two extended plays (EP), one studio album, and three online shows. Their bravest endeavor yet is their Pagtatag! World Tour, which is their second world tour after having WYAT (Where You At Tour) in 2022. Since their unexpected popularity, they have been nominated and earned many accolades. In 2021, they became the first-ever Filipino group and the first South-

east Asian act to be nominated for Top Social Artist at the Billboard Music Awards. Their main goal to break through the music scene while uplifting the Filipino spirit, music, and culture was recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) when they were chosen to be the Youth and Sentro Rizal Ambassadors in 2021. Thus far, SB19 has achieved 129 wins out of 152 nominations, all of which they have achieved through the all-out support of their local and international fans.

Despite the continued success of their songs, the most recent being Gento, SB19 believes they still have a lot more to do—especially now that they are self-managed under their own label, 1Z Entertainment. Besides the members’ commitment to their now-established group, they have also been striving to set up their individual

names by allowing one another to explore and flourish their solo careers. With Josh, Ken (also known by his mononym Felip), and Pablo winding up the music industry with their solo music releases and Stell and Justin drawing attention with their solo projects, there surely is no stopping the P-pop sensation from carving their names deeper in the industry.

Taxpayers burden: Education or failed gov’t system?

Education is a universal right that everyone must exercise regardless of age, race, sex, and socioeconomic background. In a third-world country like the Philippines, it is the only way the underprivileged can escape poverty.

However, the head of the Marcos administration's economic team doesn't seem to understand that, as he said, the free tertiary education program is inefficient and a waste of public funds. Last September 2023, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno suggested reviewing the free education program in state colleges and universities as dropout rates rise.

He cited the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) data, where college students' dropout and attrition rate in the Philippines was around 34% from 2016 to 2022.

Diokno suggests revisiting the free college education system in light of the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education (UAQTE) law enacted during the Duterte administration. Aside from that, he also proposed a nationwide screening of students wanting to qualify for state universities.

"The core of my proposal to revisit the present free college education is how to optimally allocate resources funded largely by taxpayers for education," said Diokno.

Lawmakers had mixed reactions to Diokno's statement. Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara believes wealthy families should

pay tuition to support poorer families and students. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III said that the DOF Secretary made a very valid point as he said, "Those who want to go to college, for those who have the aptitude to study in college, and for those who can secure a competitive slot in college as determined through competitive examination."

Holding such a viewpoint, the government is just suggesting

another hindrance for the students to enter college, especially the marginalized. The allocation of scarce government resources must indeed be improved. However, the program's sustainability must maintain students' educational opportunities and financial well-being despite its costs.

Education will never be a waste of public funds. The people's fundamental and constitutional rights should not be taken away.

The Soccoro Bayanihan Services Inc. (SBSI) has been in the frontlines of news with Senator Risa Hontiveros claiming the group is a cult and indicting them of forced marriages of children, sexual as-

sault, and financial extortion.

Before the revelation of child marriages and exploitation by its leaders, the group was regarded as a civic organization. It was founded by Rosalina Mullanida "Nena" Lasala-Taruc and her husband, Don Albino Taruc, on December 20, 1980. The group's primary objective is to build a community that fosters the bayanihan spirit, which offers a range of services, including carpentry, agricultural, and funeral services.

Based on accounts from previous members, SBSI began operating differently in 2017. Leaders of the organization reportedly directed members to relocate to a hilltop settlement that now occupies the site once occupied by Kapihan View Park. By 2019, around 5,000 people, including teachers, government workers, and police-

men, sold their properties and quit their jobs on orders from SBSI officials to relocate to Sitio Kapihan.

Today, its leader, Jey Rence Quilario, also known as Senior Agila, rose to the top of the conversation as supporters continued to preach the redemption he promised while claiming to be God's reborn son.

Aside from claiming to be the new messiah, Quilario makes his members believe everyone should be married because the only way to enter heaven is by pairs - just like the creatures in Noah's Ark. And he uses that marriage to force children, as young as 12 years old, to marry adults and have sex with them. If they don't follow that rule, they will be hit with a paddle, imprisoned in a foxhole, forced to swim in a hole filled with urine and feces, or sometimes Quilario would

Affordable and accessible education is crucial for the development of individuals and society. It equips people with the knowledge and skills required to contribute significantly to their communities, leading to progress and prosperity. college education, thereby stimulating sustainable growth and development.

Clearly, the secretary needs to be in touch with the Filipino student's situation. The increase in college dropouts across the country cannot be attributed solely to a lack of commitment to education.

There are multiple factors that contribute to this trend, including financial limitations, the impact of the pandemic, inadequate resources, transportation difficulties, and widespread mental health concerns prevalent among young people today.

To tackle college dropout rates, we must take a decisive and multifaceted approach that includes enhancing academic and financial support systems and expanding access to quality education. It also involves efforts from both educational institutions and policymakers to create a conducive environment for students to succeed and complete their college degrees.

The country's economic managers must take immediate and decisive action to tackle the escalating education, transportation, and food costs. They must also prioritize providing sustainable livelihoods for parents to ensure their children's education is not compromised. If we really want to improve our education system and not waste taxpayer’s money, maybe we should choose competitive people in our government who will truly understand the struggle and needs of its people.

More importantly, this case should be an eye-opener for the country to prioritize education.

With all the alleged cult-like practices of this group, one thing’s for sure: Our children belong in schools, exploring their skills, hobbies, and interests — not in a community that forces them to marry and have sex with adults.

One of the best practices of good governance is to demonstrate transparency. It's essential to always be transparent when it comes to spending money. Whether it’s a business or a school program, you should always be ready to show proof where the money was spent.

Even if you're asking your parents for money to pay a miscellaneous fee, providing a receipt is always a good idea. In an ethical country, that should be the highest form of courtesy for all taxpayers - the Filipinos.

Index (CPI), the Philippines ranked 116th among 180 countries and territories globally. The CPI assesses perceived levels of corruption in the public sector, measuring the misappropriation of public funds, officials using public office for private gain without facing consequences, bribery, etc. A country's score is also perceived for a rank to be determined. According to the 2022 CPI data, the Philippines scored 33 on a base measurement of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). With the country’s score alone, it shows that there is a problem with our

Delicadeza, despite its Spanish origin, has become an integral part of Filipino culture as a highly regarded trait and value. It em-

phasizes the importance of proper etiquette by adhering to ethical behavior in the exercise of authority. It is a noble trait, but unfortunately, it is almost nowhere to be seen in modern Philippine politics.

Increasingly, non-existent in practice and discourse, it has become a dying trait in a corrupted society. Its absence in Philippine political culture reflects public servants' lack of ethical behavior in their position of power.

Nowadays, identifying politicians and government officials who embody delicadeza is like finding a needle in a haystack. It is concerning that individuals with criminal records and those previously convicted are still being appointed to government positions.

For instance, figures like Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr., who was involved in the infamous Pork Barrel Scam incident, and Robin Padilla, who was convicted of illegally possessing firearms in 1994, now serve as senators in the country. It's worrisome that many politicians cling to their positions like flies in a flytrap, even when they are somehow or directly involved with illegal cases.

There is also value in stepping down in one's position if one admits they aren't fit for the role they assume; they call it 'resigning out of delicadeza.' It was observed in other countries' public officials, such as Japan, where two cabinet members resigned less than two months into their tenures in Oc-

With intimidation from a dismissed ex-cop to a cyclist, gun-toting emerged again as a

masculine approach to scare Filipino civilians. Following the "away kalsada" of an ex-cop and a biker in Quezon City, a businessman also cocked his rifle. He aimed for an unarmed taxi driver due to road rage a few days later in Valenzuela City.

These incidents have been taken lightly since there is no law in the country against road rage. Aggressors who are influential enough can freely wield their guns to act superior to civilians since they can, later on, get away with their actions by holding a press conference and claiming that it is self-defense.

The surge of armed individuals who mindlessly use guns has be-

come alarming not only for civilians but for the country as well.

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), on May 26, 2023, around 539,000 firearms in the Philippines have expired licenses, and almost 19,000 are owned by soldiers and police. Furthermore, based on the data from the PNP as of May 2023, there are at least 1.15 million licensed firearms in the Philippines, yet they still can't prevent the emerging misuse of guns in the country.

The love for sports is deeply ingrained in Filipino culture, with many local athletes and champi-

ons emerging from different fields.

With that, they continue to bring pride and represent our country in various competitions, both locally and internationally. Unfortunately, despite their impressive achievements, not all Filipino athletes receive the necessary support.

On August 9, 2021, former Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque claimed that the Duterte administration provided a "record" level of financial support in the sports industry for the success of Filipino athletes in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, Hidilyn Diaz, the first Filipino athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics, said

in a 2019 Facebook post that she had financial difficulties in supporting her needs to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Another athlete, Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial, experienced the same struggle before the fight. Fortunately, renowned basketball player Thirdy Ravena pledged financial support to Marcial upon discovering his post. In addition, Filipino and the world's no. 3 pole vaulter EJ Obiena could not join the Asian Indoor Championship 2023 due to financial and logistic matters.

With the recent case of OVP Sara Duterte’s confidential funds, some individuals and progressive groups have bellowed a call for transparency. Although persistent calls have been made before, it usually leads to a prolonged debate between the public sector and the people. This should not be the case. In the statement of the House Committee on Appropriations Vice Chairperson, Rep. Bienvenido Abante, he said that confidential funds should not be discussed. “I do not know why today masyado nating pinag-uusapan ang confidential fund, I had been in the Congress since 2004, hindi pinag-uusapan ‘to eh,” he shared during the House plenary deliberations on the

proposed FY 2024 General Appropriations Act. It appears that confidential funds have not been questioned in his long era in Congress, but it is not too late for us Filipinos to change the system.

Ensuring transparency and accountability in our government is crucial for building trust with the public. One pressing issue that demands immediate attention is the disclosure of confidential intelligence funds (CIF) and the utilization of public sector resources. It's encouraging to see the Commission on Audit revisiting guidelines on CIF, but more needs to be done.

We have the potential to further develop our country, but it will require a lifelong commitment to transparency from our leaders.

When government officials are not held accountable for their harmful actions, they become emboldened and more likely to continue acting in their self-interest without regard for the public they were elected to serve. This can ultimately lead to a lack of respect for the people and a disregard for their needs and well-being.

Therefore, government officials must be held accountable for their actions to prevent abuse of power and promote transparency and fairness in governance.

Moreover, on September 4, 2023, the Philippines’ House of Representatives discussed the proposed sanctions for road rage under the House Bill no. 8991, also known as the Anti-Road Rage Act, in which the offender will face six to twelve years of imprisonment or an acceptable

fine worth Php 250,000 to Php 500,000 if they are proven guilty.

Guns are not a badge to kill just to satisfy someone's ego. Public servants who misuse their weapon privileges must be held accountable under the law. This sends a powerful message that no one is above the law, even law enforcers.

Pulling the trigger and toting their guns at civilians is an act of oppression. If this abuse continues, the country will be filled with egomaniacs who will fearlessly use their guns in any situation. It is the duty and obligation of the government to maintain peace in the country. Thus, they should take action on how to stop this gun-toting trend by starting with the law enforcers.

With all these troubles, now is the time for the government to improve the support system for our Filipino athletes. Our leaders should not only vow to effect change but also carry out a systematic and concrete plan to improve our sports industry. If the government can provide appropriate training facilities and financial assistance, the Philippines can produce exceptional athletes who can make history globally. In that case, the government can claim that these athletes get the necessary support they require to compete rather than mere compliments, plans, and promises that could lead to the misappropriation of funds under questionable leadership.

Little big efforts, little big dreams: A Documentary Review

students to dream big. This is a story of Nanay Jen from the i-Witness documentary of Howie Severino titled “Boat to School.”

I-Witness is known as a platform with extraordinary stories like this one, but this episode features an exceptional person who molds kids to row their boats and reach their dreams.

Meet Jen Abanzado, called by her students “Nanay Jen,” a 37-yearold dedicated woman from Sitio Liaonan, Siargao. The place where

she lives is rich in resources that land thousands of tourists. But education is a luxury because kids cannot only afford to go to school but they are also impelled to work at a young age. An 11-year-old student named Romnick is mentioned in the documentary, and he is only in his second grade due to working as a fisherman to provide for his family's needs. But Nanay Jen becomes an instrument to let Romnick regain his feet and swim for his dreams again.

As early as seven in the morning, kids are already gathered in Nanay Jen’s home to eat before going to school. “Kapag galing dito kailangan busog sila, para pagdating

doon ‘di sila makakaramdam ng gutom para ‘pag nag-lecture ‘yung mga teacher nila, maiintindihan nila kasi ‘di nila iintindihin ang gutom.” She opened her humble home to become a learning hub for her growing number of students. When she started during the height of the pandemic, she only had five children to teach, but currently, she teaches more than 30 students. She not only teaches but also effortfully serves as the boat's captain who travels the island back and forth to ensure that students will safely come to school.

Before, it was hard for her to encourage the kids to go to school due to a lack of resources. Still, since good deeds are not difficult to notice, a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Calls Over Ridges gave them a chance to study again.

They provided a boat for Nanay Jen and her students and extended their help to pay for the boat's gasoline regularly. Luckily, that is not the only NGO that lent their hands to Nanay Jen but Espoir School of Life Philippines, which aims to give free quality education to kids in Siargao, has also noticed them. Espoir, on the other hand, gave hope to the students by providing them with a monthly supply of three kilograms of rice every time they completed their one-month attendance at school.

Even though their school’s state is wrecked due to the damages Typhoon Odette brought in 2021, the kids are still dedicated to learning.

Even if they are crowded inside a

room, even if it takes hours to travel to their school, their eyes still spark with dreams and hopes.

This documentary successfully touched the Filipinos to their core, not only through the technicalities of cinematography and color grading that made the island of Siargao more beautiful, but this episode of i-Witness unequivocally called both the government and the public to take action. Imagine a country where the needs of these children are fulfilled through quality education; the other hopeful children who are unnoticed at this moment will be made visible.

Nanay Jen was called crazy for teaching without a degree, as she didn’t even graduate from high school. She was called names and received derogatory remarks by parents whose children are now her students.

But nothing stopped Nanay Jen and her dedication to teaching. She may lack resources, but all she knows is that her little, big efforts have made the little children dream big. With this, she becomes a hero to every child’s eyes.

“Pagdating ng panahon gusto ko wala nang hindi marunong bumasa at sumulat.” With only a simple dream like this, Nanay Jen could move the waters from rowing the boat; imagine what the government can do if they notice these kinds of problems in the country; perhaps they can move mountains.

Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth and the only place with zero permanent inhabitants, has warmed enough to grow some flowers.

After decades of deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, and pollution, a flower in the coldest place on earth means that global warming and climate change are becoming more and more crystal clear to the world's naked blind eyes.

As Antarctica blooms and the globe warms up, this explains the scale of the problem and what inhabitants can do to take care of Mother Earth.

Nicoletta Cannone, a researcher from the University of Insubria, and her team have observed between 2009 and 2018 that two plant species present in Antarctica, Deschampsia Antarctica and Colobanthus quitensis, have grown much faster compared to the previous growth between 1960 to 2009, from +20.8% to a +28.2% growth rate per decade. This fact only means that the ice warming in Antarctica is becoming more habitable for more vegetation and plants every year. As a result, it could rapidly and significantly alter global biodiversity and ecosystems.

A flower in Antarctica is a flick of a domino effect in people's daily lives. Melting ice in the continent means rising sea levels, which can lead to more frequent and stronger natural

disasters like typhoons and flooding and more intense seasons like dry and wet seasons, which could disrupt economic progress, thus affecting people's way of life.

Global warming may directly

refer to a rise in global temperature over a long period of time, but it directly results in climate change because it disrupts the natural process that affects global climate and weather patterns.

Global warming and climate change won't be fixed overnight with a one-time big-time solution, but that doesn't mean people can't do anything about it.

Every individual does not need to be a president, an expert, or an all-knowing sage to contribute significantly to saving Mother Earth, but doing simple actions such as turning off your lights when you leave your room or taking your bicycle instead of taking your car out can turn the tides in favor of fighting climate change.

For every issue, every problem, and every concern, people can always call for a solution. Raise awareness on social media and talk to friends and families about what will happen if people don't act right now.

As time goes by, the effects of global warming and climate change become increasingly apparent. Along with the warming of ice and the clearness of this global problem, it is also a sign that Mother Earth needs humankind's saving.

TRACING THE NEXUS: NAVIGATING THE LINE BETWEEN FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND BLASPHEMY Compared to previous centuries, the modern world has become more accepting of people expressing themselves. However, the same old questions remain the same.

How far have we come from the past? What boundaries have we crossed?

Freedom is something that all individuals possess, even in terms of faith. This freedom always entails a great deal of responsibility. Pura Luka Vega, a Filipino drag artist, actively exercised their right to

free speech. On their controversial performance on July 2023, which showcased the Lord's prayer, "Ama Namin," was performed in a remixed version. Church leaders find it to be inappropriate, disrespectful, and blasphemous. Citizens, and leaders of eighteen municipalities that have declared the drag artist to be persona non-grata.

People online started to voice out their opinions and discuss whether Vega deserved the resolution. When it comes to drag as a form of art, where is the line that ventures from freedom of expression to blasphemy? How can we ensure we don't cross this boundary while maintaining creative freedom, and how can societies balance the right to free speech with respecting religious beliefs, especially in a Catholic-dominated country like the Philippines?

Blasphemy is a sensitive topic that one must touch with cautious judgment and prudent minds. Several Perpetualites have taken the courage and shared their reflective insights with us, and here's what they said:

Fr. Roy, Ethics Professor Every human being is accorded with their exercise of rights as long as it is not harmful or injurious. Exercise of rights should never be limited to the individual or the majority, but rather, it should always be from the perspective of communal. The common good is one value that can hold the balance against personal good or self-serving interests that camouflage what others would claim as exercise of one's rights.

Anonymous, 4th year AB in Communication Naniniwala ako na drag is art. At na minsan, ang art ay nakakasakit o nakaka-offend. Kaya normal lang na may mga nag-react sa drag niya kasi ibig sabihin na-serve niya ang purpose ng art niya, ibig sabihin effective siya.

Siguro sa akin ang pagkakamali lang ni Pura Luka ay ang kakulangan niya sa respeto sa pananampalataya ng iba, kasi hindi naman tayo pare-pareho ng kapasidad na mag-absorb ng art.

Anonymous, 2nd year BS in Architecture Respect is not an absolute thing; however, it is crucial in morality and if one has a say in creative freedom, we accept it. Therefore, it is only fair and proper to accept the fact that by committing blasphemous acts, you are disrespecting the community and should be held accountable.

Anonymous, 1st year BS in Nursing Artistic expression is indeed far from the notion of blasphemy. My only concern in this topic is the difference between the retorts of the society with regards to the incorporation of Luka in the LGBTQIA+ community this kind of act was already present in the times of Marlon Tapalord, but why is that Luka has been the only one to be declared persona non grata?

Francis, University Associate Chaplain I think the challenge to make societies learn to strike a balance between the insistence on the right to free speech and the respect of religious beliefs begins by addressing the two distinct yet complementary missions of educating the young: the family and the school community. These two "basic communities" are the foundation of the human person and, on a larger scale, society. The impression that can be made, therefore, is that the act, which has become viral, might be traced to how the family and the school community shaped his beliefs, values, perception of freedom, and perception of profession in society.

People can express themselves artistically, but they should know the difference between mockery and freedom of speech— keep in mind that not all expression is art.

Chariotte, 1st year AB in Communication As a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, some of my fellow members indeed express themselves in the form of drag. However, the act of expression itself may sometimes be abused, boorish, and appear as an overreaction. I am also a believer in God, and I think that boundaries should still be maintained accordingly. Once they realize that their actions are already overboard, it may be a time when they should already stop.

Kaya halina’t simulan na natin ang kwento ng bakasyon na sa isang iglap ay natapos din. ‘Wag kang masyadong masabik, ako lang ‘to. CHARIZ!

Forda enrollment ang mga students Hala sige! Larga na mga beshie! Sisimulan na ni Lala ang naging dahilan ng pagningning ng aking mga kaloob-looban – enrollment! Alam kong hindi ‘to dapat ang iniintindi agaran sa bakasyon pero ano pa nga ba? Gustong makapagtapos ‘di ba? Edi, inagahan na ang pag-enroll para naman wala nang iisipin habang sinusulit ang bakasyon (Gusto kong magpakasaya, sana ikaw din!) dahil secured na ang klaseng papasukan at skedyul para sa susunod na taon, maaga rin napaghandaan ang paparating na pasukan.

Hindi rin nawala ang mahabang pila sa enrollment, nakaka-haggard mga beshie pero kineri ng Lala niyo! Kung kinaya ko, s’yempre alam kong kinaya niyo rin. Maniwala kayo mga beshie, ito’y isang stressbuster!

Pinakawalan na rin ng isang Lala ang mga stress sa buhay, maging anuman or kung sino man ito. It’s our time to shine mga beshie! Kaya naman habang maaga pa, nagbigay na ako ng oras para sarili habang wala pa ang pasukan, para sa pasukan, fresh na fresh ang looks ko. Sabayan niyo ‘ko! #Deserveko‘to!

Habang sinusulit ang maikling bakasyon, ‘di maiwasang isipin ni Lala ang nalalapit na pasukan. Na-excite ako sa paparating na pasukan, kayo ba? Excited na ba ang Perpetualites na pumasok at kumilala o gusto pang ituloy ang bakasyon? Oras na para matulog at gumising nang maaga, umiyak, tumawa, kumilala, at magmunimuni! Hala sige at umpisahan mo nang magbasa ng syllabus (‘Wag nang tamad beshie, 2023 na!), sulit ang stress dahil makikita mo na si crush, may rason na para bumangon araw-araw, laban mga accla! Growing Up

ALTAS PRIDE: NCAA Season 98 Men’s Volleyball MVP Louie Ramirez trains in Japan

The Perpetual ALTAS and NCAA Season 98 Men’s Volleyball Most Valuable Player (MVP) Louie Ramirez continued to bring pride to the Perpetualite community as he underwent a threeweek training stint with the Japan V-League 1 Volleyball Team Oita Miyoshi - Weisse Adler, last August 16 to September 3, 2023.

Ramirez was allowed to improve his stellar skills with the top-notch team, as he was coached to further develop his offensive strength inside the court and improve his defensive abilities. “Iyong mga coaches doon, nag-focus sila para tulungan ako sa receiving skill ko. Although, for the first few days, nag-focus kami sa offense ko tapos afterward, sa defense ko naman kami nag-work lalo na sa blockings ko and reception,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Ramirez admitted that he found it amusing and odd that the training focused more on the discipline and training ethics of players. He also admired the athletes’ discipline and punctuality, as well as their respect for their coaches.

Moreover, Ramirez considers Coach Sammy Acaylar to be his biggest influence. He was scouted and invited to train in Japan. Although he was only asked through Instagram by one of the Oita Miy-

oshi - Weisse Adler team coaches, Coach Murray Pole Ndlovu, he said this opportunity would only be possible with the skills and invaluable life lessons he learned from Coach Acaylar.

In addition, he expressed his gratitude to his coaches and the entire Perpetualite community for their continued support. He emphasized that this had a significant impact on his success and development as an athlete. He also acknowledged his coaches’ encouragement and guidance that motivated him to strive for excellence on and off the court.

Ramirez was confident that he and the entire team would dominate the court again in the NCAA Season 99. “Next season, gusto namin mas mag-improve kami as a team kasi ngayon naniniwala kami sa isa’t-isa and sa ability namin as players. Naniniwala kami na ‘yung strength namin as a team is unity talaga inside the court and ‘yung paglalaro namin bilang isang Perpetualite,” he shared.

Perpetual ALTAS Judo Karate-do team bags medals at the PASKA Karate-do Championship 2023

As a part of the Perpetual Sports Academy, the Perpetual ALTAS Judo Karate-do team brought home 13 medals in the Progressive Arts and Sports Karate-do (PASKA) Championship 2023, held last July 29 and August 27, 2023.

The three-person team included two second Dan black belters and a tenth Kyu blue belter: John Maco Anub, KC Alysandra Corpin, and John Emmanuel Genzon Fajardo.

The 4th leg of the tournament took place at Robinsons Place, Las Piñas City. Anub, the team captain, a third-year Bachelor of Arts in Communication student, won gold medal in the Advance Team Kata 18 and above division.

Corpin, the co-captain, a first-

year Bachelor of Science in Tourism student, won two gold medals for the Advance Team Kata and Kumite 18 and above division.

Furthermore, the two karatekas won silver and bronze medals in the Advance Kata 18 and above.

While Fajardo, a first-year Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship student, secured two gold medals in the Newbie Kata & Kumite 18 and above.

As of late August, Corpin then transferred to the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), but despite her early departure, the team continued to represent the Perpetualite community with tenacity and unshakeable confidence, showing results of clinching six medals at Robinsons Metro East, Pasig City. above, and a silver medalist in the Advance Kata 18 and above. Fajardo prevailed in the Boys’ Newbie Kata & Kumite 18 and above, and Newbie Duo Kata 18 and above, earning two gold medals and a silver medal, respectively.

Before the local tournament, the team trained under Grandmaster William Macly, a senior martial artist with more than sixty years of experience, and Master Shihan Emerson Balbin, a fifth Dan black belter and chief instructor, served as his assistant coach.

According to Anub, the team’s primary goal was to showcase their pride and morale as Perpetualites. “Kapag natalo kami, may victory pa rin kasi ayaw naming umuwing luhaan. Uuwi kaming masaya, matalo o manalo,” he added.

Fajardo described his experience on the team as ‘life-changing’. After failing to win a medal in the 3rd Leg: PASKA Karate-Do Invitational Championship 2022, he realized the importance of self-improvement in the sport.

“Kaya ako sumali sa karate ay dahil sa tinuturo [nito]. It promotes self-improvement and self-discipline, ‘yan ‘yung naging motivation ko. Gusto ko lang talaga mag-improve para kapag may nangangailangan ng tulong ko, nandoon ako para sa kanila,” he shared.

The team is currently preparing to represent Bacoor City in the Philippine National Games this December and hopes to recruit more members for the upcoming tournaments. Due to karate being excluded from the Philippines’ list of NCAA sports, the team and coaches hope it will eventually be included.
