Our Red Cross Branch From Closing!

If you have not hear yet the Wallingford-Meriden Branch of the Red Cross is scheduled to close by the end of Summer. This is a tragic event for our communities. They do so much for all of us and we need to return the favor and fight for them. It’s amazing how much they do and always with smiling faces. It’s hard to understand why upper management would close the branch. This year they served and assisted more than ever. In the past year they had a 25% increase in Disaster Services (shelter, food, clothing and misc such as prescriptions, etc) 32 families assisted primarily in Meriden with 18 incidents The Food Pantry helped 907 individuals or 356 families who received 7001 bags of food which translated to over 35,000 meals. There was 62 families adopted at Christmas and 88 families received Thanksgiving baskets. 153 gift cards were given to those in need. They helped 46 households with Rent and Utility Assistance. 15 families received additional assitance with prescriptions, bus/train fare, gasoline, rent, oil. The also helped with Transportation - 155 clients with no other means to get to out of town medical appointments were driven 33,482 miles receiving 1,773 rides. 3 clients on dialysis require a vehicle and driver to bring them in the morning and another vehicle and driver to pick them up four hours later and this happens 3 times per week. On to Blood Services - they provided volunteers and staff and supplies for 164 blood drives 7600 pints collected in branch area. In regards to Health and

Safety they taught 160 children water safety at the community pool, 3370 residents certified in FA/CPR/AED, 161 certified in CT Child Care, 231 children took babysitter's training, 96 certified in chapter developed courses for a total of 3,858. 542 people were certified by Red Cross instructors who act as authorized providers. Bottom line - the Wallingford-Meriden Branch is like a great neighbor...always helping and always caring. The folks there are friends to us all and it’s time that we help them as they have always helped and served us. I have to admit that I’m angry and I don’t get angry. Why would they choose such a succesful branch to close. Well, we are not going to let that happen are we! Here is how you can help and it will only take a few minutes of your time.
