Happy Birthday Derek! Love, Grama Alberta

Celebrations of Life & Home

A Special Gift Yesterday was not my weekend to have the kids but according to our agreement I was entitled to spend at least two hours with them for their birthdays. So with no planning whatsoever I called the kids mother at 2:45 pm on Sunday afternoon if I could see the kids that evening. We agreed I could picked them up at 6pm. Elienai was wonderful helping me out. She shopped for dinner and went to Toys R Us for the gift. I stayed home to make the Birthday dinner. A little piccadillo, black beans, rice, and sweet plantains. Elienai went to pick up Zoe and Aidan so I could finish cooking. By the time they arrived dinner was ready. I only had a few hours so I did not want to consume my time preparing a meal. Aidan was looking good sporting a linen Hawaiian shirt and of course Zoe was as beautiful as ever especially so donning her new Glasses. Very Stylish with a dark blue on the outside of the frame and light blue on the inside. We gave Aidan a gift of nerf tagger which is two sets of nerf blaster (guns) and scoring vests and safety glasses. He set up one of the vests as a target in the staircase. He liked it I think. We spent time together playing Mancala and talking about their time at a Christmas Party for the German Club earlier in the day. We had dinner and an Ice Cream cake the shape of a football. We sang and took pictures. The ice cream cake was different and very good. Its was Snickers candy inside with caramel and peanuts and chocolate. Aidan asked for seconds for cake. Ice cream cake is his favorite. Before we new it the time had come to take them home. I drove them home a few minutes late, and as I was saying goodbye Aidan leans forward into the front seat of the truck and tells me this was his "best birthday ever and thank you for the gift". I was surprised and puzzled why this birthday was so special. There were no guests, or fancy food, only one present, and no decorations of any kind. We had each other and love. When I asked Elienai about it when I got home she told me Aidan asked "why didn't Dad pick us up" she told him I stayed home to make a special birthday dinner for him and she said his eyes lit up. Sometimes I don't realize the things I do are special but Aidan's thank you to me was like a hit in the head it woke me up to how special it was to my nine year old boy to spend some time with his Dad and to have him see how special he is to me. I love him. Thank you for everything Lynne. I love you. - Michael (Bermudez)

Happy Birthday Pete Hazelwood,7?

Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home! ~Charles Dickens, The Pickwick Papers, 1836

Mayor’s Corner - Wallingford Merry Christmas Nana & Pop Pop, Love, Vanessa Grace xoxoxoxoxo

Dear Friends: The Holiday Season is upon us! The hustle and bustle of everyday is ramping up to the crescendo of parties, gifts, religious celebrations, food and beautiful decorations. It is a wonderful time to share with friends and family. "Do you remember when we" becomes an oft repeated phrase as people greet one another. In fact, the entire holiday time is constructed upon remembering. Remember to schedule the school play. Remember to order the ham. Don't forget to buy an additional string of lights. Do you remember where we stashed the candles from last year? I remember when we went out and bought a real, green, fresh smelling Christmas tree. Why don't we do that again this year? Where are the extension cords? Where is Flick? Flick who? In the movie "A Christmas Story", Flick, of course, the boy who sticks his tongue to a flag pole and his friends leave him to go back into school. Flick was left, stuck to the pole, plaintively calling, "Don't leave me!" Most of all this season, don't leave Flick behind. Whoever he might be in your ravels, the Flicks in our lives need to be remembered and helped. Have a wonderful time of celebration and good cheer! Sincerely, William W. Dickinson, Jr. Mayor

Mayor's Corner Meriden

Dear Friends, The falling leaves and the colder weather are clear indicators that winter is on the way. The frosty weather is also a reminder that it is time for Christmas and other seasonal holidays. I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season. Ocean State Job Lot is now open for your holiday shopping and Lowes and Sundad Plaza, up the road, are not far behind. The Christmas in the Village volunteers once again brought holiday cheer to South Meriden. The fun festivities, seasonal snacks, and holiday performances were a special treat for all Meriden residents. Thank you to the Christmas in the Village Committee for all their hard work and dedication and for providing this event free of charge to the city and citizens of Meriden. We all Thank You! I would also encourage Meriden residents to visit Hubbard Park's Festival of Silver Lights display. A tea pot and poinsettias are joining the fantastic selection of lights this year. I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. While Thanksgiving is a time to say thanks and enjoy turkey with family and friends, it also is a time to watch football. Maloney and Platt did not disappoint us this year. Congratulations to the victorious Maloney Spartans and the feisty Platt Panthers for putting on an exciting game for the large crowd at Ceppa Field. Also thanks to Cox Communications for doing a special 50th anniversary edition broadcast of the Stoddard Bowl. I would also like to congratulate our Meriden Raiders football and cheerleading teams for their success. An unprecedented three football teams from Meriden have qualified for the National Tournament in Florida. Go Raiders! Meriden is looking forward to welcoming home national champions. In closing, I thank the voters and citizens of Meriden for their overwhelming vote of confidence and trust. I love being your Mayor and I look forward to continuing our work together. Enjoy the holidays and stay warm. Thanks for all your support! Sincerely, Mark D. Benigni - Mayor

A Christmas Tree Adventure by George A. The day was blustery cold, but I didn't care…my dad and I were on our way to cut down that perfect Christmas tree. Frosty snowflakes clung to my snowsuit as we trudged along. Hey, it was December, and we were facing Old Man Winter's frigid welcome. Dad had to help me out several times with my clumsy efforts to overcome the grueling escapade. He would take my hand, and with a grin as big as a mountain, ease me up over some huge snow bank. The going was rough, but I was determined to show dad that I was a big kid now…I was seven years old and tough. I wasn't going to let a little bit of cold and snow get in my way. The wintry wind was being nasty as could be. Dad had to hug me up close a couple of times to shelter me from the wind gusts that would spring up, without warning, as we trampled through the snow. I was happy when he decided we should take a break. We paused beneath a huge pine tree that must have been a thousand feet tall. Dad slowly took out a thermos bottle that he had hidden inside his coat, and gently twisted off the lid. "Wow…hot chocolate" He handed me the little cup that comes with the thing. I breathed in the steam that drifted up into the chilled air. Then, with a big smile, I sipped the hot contents. After dad had finished his cup, we were back to our adventure. Then suddenly, right in the middle of a clearing, there appeared a magnificent evergreen tree. It stood there proudly, and oblivious to these two determined tree hunters. "That's it, dad." Dad nodded his head, and then without hesitating, walked right up to that noble-looking pine tree. With dad's first swing of the axe against the trunk of that awesome standing timber, a starling flitted out from its snowy roost. Clumps of fluffy snow fell from the outstretched boughs as dad continued to chop away with the axe. In no time dad had that tree down. With the rope I had been carrying, we tied up the branches snugly so as to make it easy to drag back home. We whistled and sang as we each tugged on the ends of the rope holding our bounty. In no time at all, we were back home. Mom and my sisters came out onto the front porch to welcome dad and me home from our tree hunt. After untying the tree, dad stood it up for all to see how it would look. Everybody clapped and said what a great Christmas tree it would be. I was really proud that I had been dad's little helper that day. Dear People’s Press I wanted to tell you the awesome news, that Snickers the dog with thee legs whose story you ran in Novembers paper was adopted yesterday!!!!!!!!!!! A woman from Middletown came to the SPCA clutching the article and stayed for two hours to get to know him. She already sent some pics and an update. I want to thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to help these animals. Because of Bravehearts story being in the paper, we raised over $1,200.00 and he has had one of his procedures already. You gave both of these dogs a chance when so many others wouldn't so from the bottom of my heart and theirs I thank you. I hope you had a nice holiday with your family - Nicole

December Online Reader Poll We asked our online subscribers "What is your favorite Christmas Movie, Song and TV special?" The great answers are listed below. If you would like to be a part of our polls and more go to www.peoplespressnews.com and click on the subscribe button. 1. Song: White Christmas 2. Movie: It's a Wonderful Life (B&W is the only version!) 3. Show: Twas' the Night Before Christmas (Does anyone remember this one with the town clock and mice family? Cartoon Network plays it a couple of times each year. :)) -Tamara OK, Christmas movie, orginal Heidi. TV show would be also be the Rudolph and Land of Misfit Toys. -Eloise Hudd My favorite Christmas movie is How the Grinch Stole Christmas, not the animated version, It shows someone with no heart can easily be able to love people and the holiday, My favorite song is Oh holy night, that is what Christmas is all about and it is set to music, Deb Belancik Sorry, I never responded the first time! My favorite Christmas song is (oh, this is hard) Sleigh Ride and my favorite Christmas movie is Blizzard and my favorite TV special is definitely Rudolph. Merry Christmas! Cathy My favorite t.v. special was "A Charlie Brown Christmas" Favorite song is "Christmas in the Trenches" by John McCutcheon from his "Winter Solstice" CD on Rounder Records. It's a must have and a must hear. It's a song reported to be a true story of an actual event in World War I. It is further told that the commanding officer from the story was court marshaled and sentenced to death for his acts of treason…and later the King of England pardoned the commanding officer and granted him a stay of execution for his acts of bravery. I usually carry a copy of it around with me around the holidays so if you want a listen, do drop in. Later, Séan W. Moore My favorite Christmas song is, "Oh Holy Night" by Johnny Mathis. My favorite Christmas movie is, "One Magic Christmas" with Mary Steenburgen. As for a favorite Christmas TV special, I would pick, John Denver and the Muppets (1979). George A. Favorite Christmas song- Silent Night/ O Little Town of Bethlehem (both have a message) Favorite Christmas movie- It's a Wonderful Life/ Christmas Comes to Willow Creek (both have a deep Christmas message) Favorite Christmas Special- Rudolph does make it #1, but The Christmas Carol has a deeper message in it Christmas is about the Christ child born to be our Savior and man have made Christmas to be so commercial and has forgotten the true meaning of Christmas Diana The Grinch, narrated by Boris Karloff. My favorite Classical song is "Bring the Torch Jeanette-Isabella" in French or English, but the French flows better. My favorite popular song is "I'll be home for Christmas", even though it makes me tear up every time I hear it. I think of the soldiers all over the world and how they must feel. Even the ones who don't celebrate Christmas have the same feelings for their

holidays....just soul-stirring. Katrina I answered the movie one with my tv show...go figure... movie would have to be the muppets christmas carol!! Jodie Happy Holidays Andy, In answer to your poll questions: 1. Favorite Song: Silent Night 2. Favorite Movie: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the one and only version in my book!) 3. Favorite Holiday TV Show: I agree with Rob. Heat Miser wins, hands down. Amy Freer My favorite Christmas song is "White Christmas" My favorite Christmas movie is the same "White Christmas" Jazzi Favorite xmas song...Blue Christmas, sung by Elvis(of course) Favorite Movie ...The Grinch That Stole Xmas -Gina My favorite Christmas song is Silent Night and my favorite movie is A Christmas Carol. Thank you Lisa My favorite Christmas song is "Grandma got run over by a reindeer". My mom loved that song and she passed away in 2006 at age 67. I think of her when I hear it. My favorite movie is "The Christmas Story". My son was about the same age as the boy in the movie when it came out, & it was the 50th anniversary of the Red Rider BB gun. We bought a limited edition one for our son for Christmas that year.....we even had put it next to our desk that looks the same as the one in the movie. Fortunately though, he never shot his eye out! Roberta Favorite movie? I'd have to say A Christmas Carol with Alaster Sim 1950's. Second would be An American Christmas Carol with Henry Winkler. Favorite song? That's just too tough to answer. Christmas Song, Nat King Cole or White Chriatmas, Bing Crosby. Thanks- Ed Marcantonio Happy Holidays Andy, in reply to your holiday questions, here I go: 1. Favorite Song: Little Drummer Boy/ Silent Night. ( it's a tie) 2. Favorite Movie: It's a wonderful life ( black and white) So, you didn't ask for favorite holiday TV Show...but, growing up in the 70's, Rudolph ruled, and was followed by "A year without a Santa Claus" ( the one with the heat miser) Have a great holiday Andy, my best for you and yours! -Rob Kosienski, Jr. Song - White Christmas Movie -Miracle on 34th Street (And I don't even celebrate Christmas, I celebrate Solstice!! lol) Maura Once In Royal David's City and It's A Wonderful Life. Nancy My favorite christmas song is rock around the christmas tree! and my favorite holiday movie is rudolph the red nose reindeer! Jodie Favorite Christmas Song- Oh Holy Night. I love the version by Whitney Houston. Favorite movie is a toss up between It's a Wonderful Life and Christmas Vacation. Both demonstrate so well how life can get in the way of the best laid plans. If I start to get stressed out during the season, I will watch one of these movies and it puts things into perspective. -Cindy song: "White Christmas" movie: "A Christmas Story" tv special: "Rudolph" :D -Charlotte

What you need to know!

Wallingford Community Christmas Dinner Dear Friends, Every year I'm asked "why do you continue to do Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners?" The simple answer is this is what I have been called to do. The longer version is I receive so many blessings, make so many memories, develop wonderful friendships, and get to be one in a group of ordinary people who do extraordinary things when we come together. This year we had one turkey three days before we needed to begin cooking. Not worried, I had a little conversation with God that went something like this. "Do you think this might be cutting it a little close? We need turkeys and everything else by Monday…" Ask and you shall receive! And receive. And receive! By Tuesday we had cooked 60 turkeys, given away more than 40 baskets to families, and helped other agencies in need of food. On Thanksgiving Day, in addition to serving 350 people at the church and sending 230 meals to the home bound in Wallingford, Cheshire, North Haven, and Meriden, volunteers wrote 500 letters to "A Recovering American Soldier" at Walter Reed Army hospital, and made 25 blankets for very ill children at Yale-New Haven Hospital. We will do the same again on Christmas Day. Two additional communities pick food up from us at 2pm each holiday and our dinner continues as they serve a few hundred more. This all happens because all of you give so generously. It is your generosity of spirit that feeds so many in so many ways. I receive the thank you phone calls and notes from so many who receive and are so grateful to have simply been remembered. When Thanksgiving is over, we take a little time off before jumping right back in to do it all over again Christmas Day. In addition to the dinners, we adopt families and provide them with the things they need most. If you would like to help with any of this, give us a call. Thanks for making the 27th Thanksgiving Dinner the best ever! I will see you Christmas Day, if not before. I wish you God's peace and every blessing. Darla's Story

On Wednesday October 24, 2207 Cub Scout Pack 29 of Israel Putnam Elementary School had a lot of fun at a Halloween Party/Bring a Buddy Night. There were fun stations for the kids to try out: wrap a mummy, drop candy corn into a jar, eat a doughnut off a stick, guess what's in the bag and pumpkin golf. The Cub Scouts came in costume and had a lot of fun with their friends!

My name is Darla and I found a Forever Home with the two of the best humans going! (OK, so they made me say that, but Steve and Ellie really are awesome!). My mom-dog had a litter of 7, but only 5 of us survived. We were dropped off in a field in the hill country of Tennessee, and it was winter and cold! As a matter of fact, my human parents picked Dec 4th as my official birthday because they said everyone should know their birth date, even a dog. I was very lucky, a couple who lived in the Tenn. hill country found my mom and us sheltering in their back field and lured us pups in with good smelling food. But I was nervous, as was my mom. In fact, they said I was the most fearful but soon came to be the most affectionate. Heck, you know the saying "never bite the hand that feeds ya". Anyway, this farm couple brought us in, taught us manners, took our picture, and put us on the internet to find us homes. My forever parents, Steve and Ellie, saw my picture and took a chance that I would be as sweet as my then name implied "Pretty Girl". So I was loaded in a large fifth wheel with lots of other dogs and met my new humans in a commuter lot in Glastonbury. They seemed as happy as I was to see them! In fact, that night they had a party with lots of friends so I could meet everyone, what a welcome!! So anyway, here I am, One year old and very thankful to be celebrating Christmas with my family in CT. Than you for letting share my Christmas story with you! Love, Darla Berry-Hound And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. ~Dr. Seuss

Live Like Trina. Mrs. Lloyd, Trina, Sissy, Katie, whatever you may have called her, was an amazing person to be around. Kathryn Lloyd had the ability to brighten anyone's darkest of days. She started out as my first grade teacher in Room 10 at E.C. Stevens Elementary School, and soon became so much more. She taught me to tie my shoes when I was 5. I remember the day I came into class for picture day, and my mom decided to curl my hair. I had an afro that was absolutely out of control! Mrs. Lloyd made me feel as if everyone had the ridiculous hair do that day and I made it through pictures alive. I always remember her teddy bears and I would always give her one. She surrounded herself with them at the Cape where she resided in the summers. After leaving first grade she was still one of my favorite teachers in elementary school. She was so amazing to my family. When my mom fell ill with cancer when I was young, she was there for me and my family. She talked to my mother in the hospital and all throughout remission. She related her experiences to my mother's and I know my mom looked up to her a great deal. When I would hear my mother on the phone with Trina, my mother was always laughing. I loved getting on the phone and hearing Trina say just one thing that would make my day ten times better. In the summers when I got older, my mother and I would travel to Cape Cod and would visit her. She was always so happy to be alive and living, regardless of the many cancers she was battling. She would always have a great story to tell and Jake, her Airedale was always by her side. The teddy bears would just add to Trina's personality. When the Relay for Life would come around, my mother's name was on one leg of my sweat pants, and her name was right beside on the other leg. I relayed for Trina. And I still will. When I was first entering college, she called and asked how I was and gave me encouragement. She always motivated me to follow my dreams. In first grade, at recess when I would run against the boys she always knew I would beat them as long as I gave it my all. I loved to run come high school. She was the most encouraging person I knew with a grand heart. Trina wasn't only a teacher of first grade, she was a teacher of life. She taught me to live life to the fullest no matter what and to always smile. No matter what happens in life, you need to tackle it and look to the future. Laughter is everything and love those around you. I thank you Trina for keeping my mom strong through her illness. I thank you for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers and I will do the same. I love you Mrs. Lloyd. Christmas - that magic blanket that wraps itself about us, that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance. It may weave a spell of nostalgia. Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance - a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved. ~Augusta E. Rundel

AMERICAN RED CROSS SEARCHING FOR LOCAL HEROES Do you know a person who has performed an extraordinary act of courage to save someone's life? Or maybe you know someone who commits countless hours to a special cause? The South Central CT Chapter of the American Red Cross wants to honor and celebrate these individuals at the Heroes of New Haven County Breakfast on Wednesday, February 27, 2008. The concept for the Heroes of New Haven County breakfast has grown out of a desire to develop an event that is closely related to the mission of the American Red Cross - teaching people to save lives. The Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. This is done through the simple, yet powerful process, of one person putting their needs aside to help another. Across the nation, over one million Red Cross volunteers do this each day. What better way to celebrate this spirit of humanitarianism than by honoring those individuals who have shown courage, kindness, and unselfish character by their acts of heroism in our New Haven area communities. Awards will be given in eight categories: Fire, Law Enforcement, Medical, 911 Dispatch, Adult Good Samaritan, Youth Good Samaritan, Military and Animal Rescue. A Heroes Nomination Committee of community leaders will select the winners. Awards will be presented at the breakfast to be held at the Omni New Haven Hotel on Wednesday, February 27, 2008. The public can obtain nomination forms by contacting the Chapter House at (203) 787-6721 or on line at http://www.arcsct.org. Nominations must be received by December 3, 2007 to be considered. Sponsorships to support this exciting event are also available. Contact Carmela Nahary at 203-787-6721 today for more information.

Comments on Today's Sports Lee Pandiani Director, Meriden Soccer Club "I am going to change the world. Maybe not all at once. Maybe not millions of people at once. But one person at a time if that's what I need to do" Those were the first words he spoke after arriving about 2 hours late to our conference last November. That short powerful statement captured my attention for the next 2 hours. By the time he was done I was ready to quit my job and take a position (any position) in his firm. He spoke a few minutes about himself and his company and cut right to the chase. His associates on invisible cues dimmed the conference room lights, turned the volume way up on the video presentation and BAM! He had you. The music, the video montage, the fowl language, and I mean fowl. Bobby Knight in his worst tirades. Little league coach's rampages, a high school soccer player hitting a referee for getting a yellow card. Home video of a youth hockey game with parents fighting (one ended up dead) Powerful images that stung. Sound bites that left you feeling sick. These were not images from a war torn neighborhood in Iraq or Somalia. These images were from organized youth sports games right here in America. Games played in neighborhoods like yours and mine. The presentation ended and I couldn't speak. No one could. Those people on the screen, well there was something wrong with 'them'. The sad thing was what we watched has become all too common in youth sports today. Parents fighting with other parents or coaches. Players fighting with referees, opposing players, teammates or coaches. The physical violence is what makes the news. But what provokes it? I listened. I was taking notes at break neck speeds. What were 'those' people thinking? Our group of about 30 spoke about many things. Each time we offered up our opinion we were rewarded with a 'green card'. One opinion that arose was in regards to what happens behind closed doors before the season begins. Secret 'arrangements' by parents or by league organizers to 'stack' one or two teams at the expense of the remainder. Maybe to aid their own child's team or a friend or a spouse who is coaching. Oh it happens, apparently all too often. There was not a person in the room who hadn't seen it happen. The "clique', the 'in-crowd', the people who have run things for years, their kids hang out together. Their kids always somehow manage to be on the winning team year after year? Was this it? Were we on to something? Was frustration the reason behind these outbursts? Or, was it kids (or parents) simply modeling the bad behavior they had seen from their heroes in professional sports? The discussion continued…When did little league stop being about having fun on a sunny Saturday with a whole bunch of your friends? When did winning by 17 runs suddenly become fun for anyone? When did it become okay to plot with your assistant coach to get all the best kids onto your team? Now before anyone gets on their soapbox and writes me a nasty letter. I don't mean to suggest that these types of things happen every day in our youth programs. But the fact they DO happen should be a concern to every parent whose kids participate in any youth oriented program. The fact is there are many great organizations that have made enormous efforts to insure that these types of things do not happen. Dr Russell's seminar was my introduction to Strengths-Based-Coaching. SBC. Yeah just another TLA (Three Letter Acronym) I thought. I was wrong. Gary's video had hit a nerve with everyone in that room. Here's a quote from his web site that sums up his message, "Tired of reading about negative behaviors in sports? Do you want young players to be treated with respect and motivated with praise? Join us in our quest to revolutionize youth sports education" It's a simple thing. Reward the positive. Oh yeah and let'em have fun. I agree. Youth sports shouldn't be about dad reliving some fleeting moment of glory when he was 11. Or about some coach who rode the pine for 2 years in high school so now he's out to prove he's a winner. It's about kids having fun. Kids learning new skills and developing there character (not their parents or coaches) Along the way they learn to win and lose. A Citizenship Through Sports Alliance survey found that parents and coaches have lost site of children's best interests, placing an undue emphasis on winning and competition instead of education and character development. Is it any wonder that more than half of all children in America quit their favorite youth sport by the time they are 13? Here's a question for you. If you put 10 kids on a court or on a field (without an adult) and they choose teams, aren't the teams normally pretty fair? Of course they are, because kids would not allow them to be anything but. Now for arguments sake what would happen if the game became a blow out? Again this is too easy. They'd make new teams and start another game. Of course they'll be the occasional squabble over 'fouls' and 'fair balls' about 'his foot was out of bounds' They resolve it and move on. Here's my challenge to club presidents, directors, coordinators, coaches and parents: This year 'Change the World'. Make spring 2008 the year that petty adult politics stays out of our youth programs. Make spring 2008 the year you cheer for every kid on the field not just your child or his teammates. Make spring 2008 the year that your child can look back on 10 years from now and say "that was the best season ever". Let them play, let them have fun and let them learn. It's their game not ours. Before we know it the soccer season will be started, the little league games will on. 8-12 weeks later the seasons will be over. What will your child remember about the season? Will they want to play again next year? Regardless of winloss records my kids and there team mates will have a positive experience this year. They will end the season as better players and better people. In June when someone asks what I did this spring I will tell them "I changed the world"

Wallingford Public Library Says Good-Bye to Co-Director Karen Roesler After 24 years as Co-Director, Karen Roesler will leave the Wallingford Public Library to become Director of the Meriden Public Library effective January 2, 2008. Her departure marks the end of a remarkably successful, 24 year experiment in job-sharing. Library Board President Karen Caplan informed the Board of Mrs. Roesler's resignation saying, "Although we are very sorry to have her leave us at this exciting time, this new position will be a good move for her and for Meriden. We wish her nothing but the best, and will miss her very much." On Thursday, December 13th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, the Library Board will host a farewell reception for Mrs. Roesler at the library. The public is invited to attend. Mrs. Roesler joined the Wallingford Public Library staff as a part-time librarian in 1976, became a full-time reference librarian in 1978, and Assistant director in 1981. In 1983 she and Leslie Scherer began a unique job-sharing experiment that turned into a successful 24 year CoDirectorship of the Library. The Library Board of Managers regretfully accepted Mrs. Roesler's resignation at their November 26th meeting and appointed Leslie Scherer as fulltime Director.

DEAR HOUSEWIVES - CENTRAL CONNECTICUT’S KNOW IT ALL GALS Dear Readers, Do you have a question regarding family life, budgeting, customer service issues, DVD or book reviews, or home organization? We will give you our candid advise from a family perspective. Contact The Peoples Press by e-mail or phone with your confidential question and we will answer it in the next issue. Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and best wishes for a Happy and Joyful New Year!!! Love, June and Flora Dear Housewives, I like to email pictures of my kids to my friends and family and I hate when someone doesn't respond. Would it kill them to say, "Cute kids" or should I stop sending pictures all together? Clicked off in Wallingford JUNE: Dear clicked, one question I have for you is how often do you send pictures? If you are sending one or more a day then they may have a right to be sick of responding. But if you send them pretty infrequently then it may be just a case of rude email syndrome. The more people seem to rely on their computers and email for things the less they use manners and people skills. It would be polite to say something about your picture. Maybe send to only those who seem to enjoy them. And PS, please send clear, nice pictures. We have a friend who sends the most blurry oversized cell phone pictures. We can hardly make out what is in the picture. FLORA: I always like a response; this way I know they received them. But someone once said that no news is good news when it comes to e-mail. And remember, peoples in-boxes are so full and some people do not regularly check email that they may not have even seen them. Maybe you should ease up on sending the ones to the no responders except for the holidays. JUNE: Flora, no news is good news if you are on trial or if the doctor is calling you "only if it's bad". In email, no news is rude. And I don't buy the "I didn't have time to respond excuse", I use email and it takes under five seconds to write a quick comment and hit send.

The three youth choirs will participate in this service. Service of Lessons and Carols at 9:00 p.m. based on Christmas Eve worship at King's College Chapel, in England, will feature the Chamber Singers, an a cappella choir. Well loved traditional Christmas music will be sung. Candlelight Holy Communion Service at 11:00 p.m. Holy Communion will be offered at this service. Gretchen Hary will provide communion music played on the marimba, a musical instrument with soft, muted tones. The Chancel Choir will provide the choral setting of familiar carols in the darkened Sanctuary. All persons are welcome to come and share in the Christmas Spirit of these worship services.

Dear Housewives, I invite a few families to my child's birthday party each year and when their children's birthdays roll along, we do not get invited to some of their parties. I feel sad about that. Give me some words to ease my sadness. Reciprocate or not? FLORA: Dear reciprocate, some families have parties for just family and a few close family friends. Try not to take it so personal. Do you get together at other times during the year? If you enjoy their company, invite them over for dinner or get together for a family hike during the year. JUNE: I can understand Flora's point (for a change) but after a while it gets old. You want your child to go to parties too. Since the family doesn't consider you close enough to invite your child it may be best to stop inviting that child. There is no reason to have a whole separate get together, the party is the get together. This is the time to have people over to celebrate. Your kid wants cake too. It is nice and polite to reciprocate. If they don't invite any other friends and only do family I would not let it bother me but if other kids that are not family are there then cut them off your list after a few years. Make room for friends who reciprocate. Dear Housewives; We have a friend who just had a baby. They already added his name on their answering machine. I think this is so stupid, who would be calling for an infant. Should I save her from her stupidity? No calls for baby in Meriden JUNE: Well, this is a good one because I have called people who not only add their child's name on the machine message but also have their kids say the message. All you hear is a five year old - "Hi this is blah, blah and blah blah and we aren't home leave a message". Give me a break. What the heck happens to people brains after a kid is added into their home. Parents-keep the kids off the machine, there is no need to add a child's name. That being said, keep your mouth shut. Your friend won't appreciate your "help" from her stupidity. Just keep rolling your eyes every time you get their machine. FLORA: I share this bit of wisdom with my children: Different families have different rules. The same thing applies here. Having the child's name on the answering machine makes them happy. Let them enjoy life at their pace and try not to let it bother you. June, I am with you on this one; keep the kids off the greeting. Household Tips Flora: Change your kitchen sponges regularly. Wash your dish towels every few days. June: I'll add a tip too Flora. Get a maid. No, just kidding. Remember to pull out the refrigerator about once a month to clean the dust build up from behind. Christmas Tip from June: When decorating for Christmas, bring in some greens from the trim up of your Christmas tree and cut them up into small decorative bowls or baskets around the house. It will make your whole house smell like Christmas.

Home Country By Slim Randles When Pop Walker sneaked out the kitchen door the other day, it affected all of us. He's been a resident of the Rest of Your Life retirement home for several years now. He still remembers who said what during combat in Europe, but has a hard time remembering if he's had breakfast. The call went out down at the Sheriff's office around 10 p.m. that Pop had slipped through the enemy lines, meaning the kitchen staff, and was on the loose. One of the deputies called Doc, who was a friend of his since forever, and Doc alerted the rest of us. Pop is one of our own, of course. A couple of years ago, he took his coffee black and his philosophy straight at the philosophy counter at the Mule Barn. It was cold, and they found his heavy coat still in his room, so this wasn't good. The deputies checked out the interstate and volunteers hit the all-night diners to see if he'd checked in there. No luck. The cook at the home was crying, and she said Pop had been talking about going to see his buddy, Jasper, again, and did we know someone named Jasper? Sure. Jasper Blankenship, up at the cabin in the mountains. When we heard this, the hunt actually took more form. Two guys started up at Jasper's place and worked down the road. Steve and Dud both went horseback and started from the edge of town. Steve found him. Pop was sitting and shivering under a tree high up on a ridge. Steve used the cell phone to let us know he was all right, then built a fire and wrapped a blanket around Pop. Pop wouldn't go back until Steve told him Jasper was down at the home, waiting for him. And Steve let him ride in the saddle, too. But before that happened, Steve ducked off behind a rock and made another phone call, to be sure Jasper would be there. Two hours later, everyone had coffee and doughnuts back at the home, and they fixed the lock on the kitchen door. We have to be careful with those who have problems. We can't afford to lose beautiful people like Pop. Brought to you by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. See what you can do to help at www.wish.org.

The 14th annual Meriden Christmas Ornament is now available at the Meriden Public Library’s information desk. Every year since 1994 the Local History Department of the Meriden Public Library has designed a pewter ornament featuring an historic building or landmark. They have become quite popular and people are always curious about what will be on the next ornament. The proceeds enable the library’s local history room to purchase preservation materials such as acid-free cases and folders, books and genealogy periodicals. This year’s ornament is obtainable for a donation of $7.00. Ornaments from prior years are $9.00. The 2007 ornament depicts the Parker Firehouse: Engine Co. No. 3. Organized fire fighting began in Meriden in 1851 with the purchase of a pumper. Fire fighters were first paid in 1873. The Parker Hose Company was organized in 1869 and had two prior locations (Center Street and East Main Street), before the present firehouse was erected in 1889 at 561 Broad Street. It originally housed horse drawn equipment, but by 1913 the fire department was mechanized. The Broad Street building was renovated and expanded in 1996-1997. It is the oldest Meriden firehouse still in use.

YOUR GIFT OF TIME . . . . . Your gift of time is a precious commodity to the frail elderly. Sharing your time, even if it's only one hour here and there with a friendly visit, escort to a medical appointment or grocery shopping is mutually rewarding for the recipient of service and the volunteer. Please call Marie Cunha at the Wallingford Senior Center and say you want to be an Interfaith Volunteer Care Giver. The next time our telephone rings with a request from someone in desperate need of a ride to a medical appointment, we will be able to tell the caller we know a caring volunteer who can help. Cost of gasoline can be reimbursed. Waiting for your call at 265-7753. The Senior Buddy Readers Program Seeks Volunteers The Senior Buddy Readers intergenerational mentoring & literacy program is currently seeking volunteers for the 2006-2007 school year. Happy Birthday

Nature as a Mirror SHEPHERDS By Dorothy Adair Gonick Isaiah 40:11 He will lead His flock like a Shepherd …and lead those that have their young. Christmas evokes thoughts of shepherds and how the young shepherds would learn from their father and other shepherds the nuances of caring for the flock of sheep, and of life, and of God. Learning the 23rd Psalm and finding great comfort and promise from it. The nightly ritual of praying it as they lay down for rest until time for their watch. The comfort of knowing that God watches with them. That each is not alone as they check on the flock's safety. Older shepherds would talk of God's presence and the stories of the Bible would become known and real to the young shepherds. They must have felt so special to be one of God's chosen flock. They would learn about the heroes of old and of the prophets and the promises they had received from God. They must have been puzzled that God chose the gentle, innocent lambs as a favored sacrifice to atone for sins, as they'd only given joy, pleasure, and wool during their life and had harmed no one. The glittering stars in the heavens or the bright moonlight would speak of God's presence in darkness…even more so than walking the streets of Bethlehem during the bustle of daylight. The peaceful, quiet silence broken only by the occasional bleating of a lamb for its mother and the answering bleat of its mother would speak of loving concern. Running errands for the older shepherds would have made the younger shepherds feel worthwhile while gaining skill at shepherding. Being small they would have been the one to rescue a lamb that was caught in a tight spot or crevice of rock. How they must have enjoyed the gentle innocent lambs they watched over. Enjoying their playful, fun loving ways as they romped with other lambs, then watch them race to answer their mother's call. Perhaps a young shepherd would have told the following story after that first Christmas Eve. "I'm the oldest child in my family and I've been around babies all my life, but last evening was a very special time. The sheep didn't settle down quietly, they kept alert and restlessly looked toward the heavens. Suddenly a star shone brighter than any that I'd ever seen. We all awoke and marveled at the warm brightness surrounding us, when what should have been clouds were truly angels! We heard a choir of voices coming from the angels and I rubbed my eyes expecting to see clouds again, but they truly were angels singing 'Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men'. We all fell to our knees and felt God was so near. We were told to go to Bethlehem and find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths lying in a manger-the Son of God! "We were awed by this visit and thought we'd be only a few in a throng of people hastening to find this manger-but the town was sleeping as though no one else had heard or seen the angels. Were we alone chosen to hear the glad tidings? Who were we to be specially chosen? I cradled my favorite lamb tenderly as we hastened to where the rays of the star shone brightly over the stable. There we saw Joseph, a carpenter, hovered protectively near Mary and the Baby. Such a peaceful, loving scene surrounded by the warm glowing light. They welcomed us as though they expected us and allowed us to worship the Son of God lying so peacefully and radiant. Mary told us the baby's name was Jesus. There was the sense of full love in the stable with the animals and cooing doves. I stared in up in wonder at Joseph, believing that if the Babe was the son of God, then Joseph must be God. Joseph put his arm around my shoulder and assured me that God had asked him to protect Mary and Jesus and to watch over them as Jesus grew to manhood. We asked blessings on the little family and felt ourselves blessed as we reluctantly returned to the hillside and our shepherding duties. Here all was quiet, yet the sense of God's loving care enveloped us and we talked long about this wonderful Babe and the peace and love in that stable. We still love to tell the story."

Our Prince is 3 on December 25! To our big boy HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You are the best Christmas present we could've wished for. Love and hugs, Mommy, Daddy and Connor

Instead of being a time of unusual behavior, Christmas is perhaps the only time in the year when people can obey their natural impulses and express their true sentiments without feeling self-conscious and, perhaps, foolish. I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens

"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star..." by Sharon Agli-Pageau Most of us have a childhood song favorite, or one that comes to mind when we think of our own children, with a smile on our face and a warmth in our heart that happens when we consider such. Many of you have become somewhat familiar with our 25 month old son, Hunter Christian Pageau, via the articles I have self-penned for the Peoples Press or other press releases shared by other news mediums in the past year. I treasure the opportunity to share with my friends/neighbors here in the Press, because I absolutely know that what I submit, word for word, will be printed for all to read. This is so much of the magic of the Press, the Gift this "Good News" Paper offers, and our family is entirely thankful for this year-round gift! As Hunter's Mommy, I am happy to share our Journey with Hunter with you all, our friends and neighbors, and keep you updated on our joint progress with offering Hunter his dream of Freedom, Mobility, and Independence. Before I embark upon that update, I wanted to share something more personal with all of you. Something you wouldn't know unless you had the benefit of spending lots of personal time with Hunter, witnessing his daily blissfulness, and actually watching the sunshine that pours out of him, particularly when he smiles. Hunter's favorite song as of late is "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and to hear him sing the words to this song, in the way that he does, could melt all the snow in Alaska, easily! Such a simple song, consisting of six lines, yet very heartfelt and meaningful. Oftentimes as he's sung it to me, I've pondered the immensity of our life with him, all we've been through, and all that is to come. I always conclude with the same lasting thought: what an absolute Shining Star Hunter has been, is and always will be, not only in our lives, but in the lives of all of those he has touched with his constant strength, bravery, joy, perseverance, to name a few, despite all he's faced daily, in regards to his diagnosis of SMARD1 (Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress). Our experience has in many ways, been "out of this world," as our lifestyle is mostly nothing of the typical routine it once was, and while that has presented great challenges, it also has presented vast growth opportunities, on many levels. So we, as parents and a family, are committed to continue shining bright as Team Hunter, right alongside Hunter, each other and those supporters in our community who already have extended themselves towards us (along with welcoming those who have wanted to help but haven't known how;please contact me:fitforlifesja@hotmail.com/203.627.3948), in supporting our very important positive campaign of "Hope for Hunter/Help Hunter Ride!" Thank you all for shining your Light upon our very vast/serious concerns and needs, in regards to raising Hunter with the best quality life possible! As many of you have read, we have secured an incredible Power Wheelchair for Hunter, which was delivered to our home on Halloween Eve, allowing him to "trick or treat" in our apartment community, driving this awesome wheelchair himself! Took our breath away, with such deep happiness to have finally been able to see Hunter outside and mobile, albeit confined to the apartment community. Fundraising for the Wheelchair Accessible Van he very much needs, of which Insurance won't pay a penny towards, began in August, and we have held three fundraisers in our surrounding communities to address this need. Those three fundraisers combined, raised $9,470 total, along with another $2,675 in private donations shared with Hunter's Trust, brings us to a total of $12,145 currently raised to help us ascertain the costly $65,000 Wheelchair Accessible Van for Hunter. We are thrilled with this solid kick-off towards the finish line of fulfilling Hunter's dream of experiencing his world as most of us do daily, freely and openly. Until Hunter is provided with the appropriate means of transport, he will continue to be transported out of his home strapped to an ambulance stretcher, for Drs/Therapy appointments only. This has been the way of it since last February, when we were finally blessed to take Hunter home, out of his 11 month long continuous out-of-state hospital stay, and while he being transported in this fashion is a sad carryover of that extensive institutionalization, it is the reality of our circumstances until the resources can be gathered for Hunter to live a more appropriate/fuller/happier experience. Let us leave this year behind, knowing TOGETHER, we have made such a palpable difference in Hunter's daily life, and usher in the New Year, knowing TOGETHER, we will continue to steadfastly travel the road towards securing Hunter's FREEDOM/MOBILITY/INDEPENDENCE! LOOK UP: the Sky is full of Shining Stars, and one of them is YOU! Thank you, with love and God Bless! Happiest/safest Holiday Season! Our neighbor loves Christmas. Every year he's the first to decorate his yard which sits on a hill. He tastefully & beautifully displays trees, Santa, snowmen, polar bears along with beautiful lights. But the shining star is the Nativity so proudly taking the front of the yard. Thank you Frank from the Neighborhood you make our Christmas special every year. Submitted By Carole Golitko

Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall. We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall, then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2,000 years ago followed a star, week after week, until it led them to a parking space. ~Dave Barry

Let's Kick Some Cancer A#$!

On October 14th Team 'Let's Kick Some Cancer A#$!!' participated in a walk in Boston sponsored by the Lustgarten Foundation in honor of my mom, Louise. The Lustgarten Foundation is an organization out of New York whose only purpose is to research cures for Pancreatic Cancer. The walk was created by the Foundation as a way of raising money for research for the cure for pancreatic cancer. 18 members of my family and friends made the trek up to Boston from all over CT, MA, and even Philadelphia. Teams could choose to walk either 2 miles or 6 miles. We all chose to walk the 6 miles, even mom, since our cause was so great! We could not have asked for a better day! The weather was absolutely perfect, even at 7 am! And the scenery walking along Castle Island and Carson Beach in Boston was beautiful! Everyone who participated is already looking forward to next year! Team 'Let's Kick Some Cancer A#$!' has raised over $3,500 so far and donations are still being made! The walk as a whole raised over $337,000! We can only hope that one of those dollars raised will be the one that finds a cure for Pancreatic Cancer! Anyone who wishes to make a donation to help in the research towards pancreatic cancer can do so directly through the Lustgarten Foundation.

A Letter from Snickers! Well, I guess you can say I'm relaxed in my new home when you look at the pictures! I like the cats except the one that slapped my face. The shyest one walked right past me this morning. The macho cat is hiding. I LOVE their food but Mom keeps me away from it most of the time. I had a nice ride home. We stopped at Agway and I got to go in and check out all the dog food, then I peed on a Christmas wreath outside but no one saw me. When we got home I checked out the yard, it's small but it will do just fine. I met the neighbors and they all think I'm pretty special. Cari's daughter gave me a big hug and a welcome to the family. Mom groomed me for awhile and I fell asleep. I ate my dinner from the Rottweiler bowls, Science Diet and some Nutro lamb and rice wet food with a little warm water. She put a blanket on the floor next to my bed and after nosing around for awhile I fell asleep and didn't get up until 6:30. I wasn't so excited about breakfast this morning but I've eaten most of it now. She got me these cookies which are supposed to be good for my teeth but I'm not crazy about them. Clark the cat got up on the table and grabbed some out of the box but he can't eat them because he has NO teeth. Go figure... I DO NOT like gates. Gloria gave some to Mom and she put one up so she could get one of the diabetic cats to go upstairs for a shot. I tried to climb over it and whined a lot until she finished and let me out. OK, time for another nap. We have to go to the grocery store later so I have to be ready to ride. Miss you guys, but I think this place is a keeper.

Christmas Shopping - make it personal! Well, tomorrow is Thanksgiving - we're expecting a houseful - really can't wait to see everyone. I've got the next day off, so should I join the hordes of others and go shopping? Nah, plenty of time on December 24th for that, just kidding! I wish it were that easy. I always have a difficult time picking out something for my spouse, what do you get for someone who has just about 'everything'? Figuratively speaking that is - I've got something in mind, hope she likes my choice. As for gift giving in general, it's always ends up, my wife taking the reins and doing most of the shopping, while I end up buying for my brother and nephew and of course I get some special things for my granddaughter. Alex's is in the can, as they say in Hollywood, as for my brother, I purchased a couple of things, but the zinger still is out there, somewhere. And this year in our extended family group, sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews apparently in an effort to take the pain, both financially, i.e. purchasing presents for everyone in the family, and of course making it easy just to choose just one gift. So my sister-in-law and my brother got together to figure out a plan and the "pull the name out of the hat" scheme was hatched. This actually works out very well; the gift is not to exceed $50.00 in value. In theory you only have to buy a gift for one member of the family (whose name is in the hat). However as tradition would have it, I still will be getting something for my brother, always have and I know my wife will be getting additional gifts for others, this was always done on the sly-I guess tradition wins in this case. What really annoys me about gift giving is the impersonal nature it has taken, now I'm not talking about my family, they are pretty hip, know what people like, etc. I always endeavor to find something unusual, amusing or downright practical for whomever I'm gifting. It doesn't take much effort to do this, I abhor those pre-packaged, boxed ready to wrap gifts that show up this time of year, glove and scarf sets, cheesy tool kits, grooming accessories and stuff like that. Come on think for yourself, this stuff is just so much junk. It's almost, no just as bad as pre-mashed, just heat and serve potatoes! And speaking of food, in the past few years I've been giving food gifts made in my kitchen as well as personally crafted stationery items, note cards, post cards, which feature my photography. Doesn't take too much effort to make personal; I really enjoy receiving a gift that took some thought! And this year will be no exception, a couple of weeks ago I made up a few boxes of note cards and will more than likely have to produce a couple more when crunch time comes about. For my 'name from the hat' drawing I'm making up a really special personalized gift for the lucky person whom I'm sure will be thrilled with my creation. It features some selection from my photography stock files as well as some historical photography. It really doesn't take much to put some thought into a gift - although you certainly should not eschew any gift received, as some people are just not into personalizing their gift giving. I was just kidding about going out on Black Friday - hey, these shops are open all year, when I'm out shopping and see something I think may make a good gift I buy it on the spot. What I find especially hard is to find are meaningful stocking stuffers; sometimes buying these is more difficult than buying a major gift. Now, when to shop, my personal preferences, go just a couple of hours before a store closes or if you must when the store opens in the morning - I mean get there when they are literally opening the doors. Avoid weekends, midday and just after most people get out of work. Happy shopping and a Merry Christmas and make it personal. By Ernie Larsen

Imagine yourself getting the skills you need to shape your future.

Poetics by Robert Whetworth

STORM WATCH One of the devil's mistresses and masters came ashore, Battering the sea, foaming at me, eager to undertow Spreading the wild random punishment of wind and rain, Grabbing shrubbery from its old bayside roots, slicing The very dubious structure of old home roots, wrecked The patch that faced the once calm bay, pushing Blasts of force, tug and pull, persistent as a Bull Ripe to run, angry to throw, livid seering in thought, brood. Somewhere the blue will break through, and the winds end, Only in a little while, the Mistresses and Masters run away.

'Tis the Season

Tis the Season for many things: a time to enjoy our families and friends, a time to reflect on another year past, and time to prepare for the New Year. My job requires that I attend many meeting, and this last year has been consumed by meetings concerned with Preparedness. Preparedness? Preparedness for what you ask? As a Health Department, it's important that we communicate with not only other health care professionals but also with you, the general public. You've heard the messages before, "Get a Flu Shot", "Cover your Cough", "Stay Home if You're Sick", "Exercise", "Eat Healthy Foods", "Limit You're Alcohol". These messages are really two-fold, to educate and to encourage you to prepare yourselves so that you can have a Healthy New Year. When I'm at a meeting speaking to community groups and someone asks what will the Health Department do if... my answer usually includes asking what have you done to prepare for... No one entity can truly do it all or do it alone. We need your help. Start to prepare now. Beyond the personal activities, take an inventory of your health. Are your immunizations up to date? If you take medication, do you have a 30 day supply or a current prescription? What about your pets? Are they immunized? I hate to sound like doom and gloom this time of year, but do you have a "plan of action" prepared? Prepared for what? How about an ice storm or if you are without power or heat? Or what if the deadly pandemic flu occurs? We're not use to being isolated in our homes, lets face it, the first report of a snow storm and the grocery stores are mobbed. You can't find loaf bread on the shelf! What if you were told to stay home for 30 days to protect you from getting sick. Could you do it? What would you need in your home that you don't already have? The Health Department is part of the CT Department of Emergency Management Homeland Security, Region 2 (DEMHS Region 2). What??? We are working to develop a regional preparedness plan, basically taking stock of available resources (people and supplies) so that IF a disaster strikes, we have a listing of folks ready to help and volunteer. We'll need you're help in manning shelters, distributing medication, checking on those who live alone or don't have transportation. You don't need a medical background to help. Contact your local health department to get involved. Better yet, Start the New Year Prepared. If you're prepared in advance, you'll find that you will be able to cope with whatever the New Year holds. So before you ask what we will do for you, answer what have to done to prepare yourself and your family (pets included!). Have a healthy and safe New Year. For more information or to volunteer, call 294-2065.

MidState Medical Center Launches New Service for New and Expectant Mothers The Family Birthing Center at MidState Medical Center is dedicated to providing expectant mothers with a safe and comfortable birthing experience. Yet our role in a mother's pregnancy begins well before labor and delivery. A Vagabond Song by Bliss Carmen There is something in the Autumn That is native to my blood Touch of manner, hint of mood And my heart is like a rhyme With the yellow and the purples And the crimsons keep time

The scarlet of the maples Can shake me like a cry Of bugles going by And my lonely spirit thrills To see the frosty asters Like a smoke upon the hills There is something in October That sets the gypsy blood a stir We must rise and follow her When from every hill of flame She calls and calls Each Vagabond by name....... My Garden Yesterday, I admired the red and yellow leaves in the trees. Today, As I walked down the street, I kicked the leaves Yesterday, I took a photo of the brilliant red witch hazel shrub Today, the leafless shrub stands in earth covered with red leaves I feel a cold wind as it blow the red leaves over the garden. Summer is departing. Tomorrows, the garden will be covered with snow. I will search for warmer clothes, sweaters, hats, gloves, to keep me warm Til tis Spring, 2008 . from Phyllis Head Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself... ~Norman Wesley Brooks, "Let Every Day Be Christmas," 1976

There is a remarkable breakdown of taste and intelligence at Christmastime. Mature, responsible grown men wear neckties made of holly leaves and drink alcoholic beverages with raw egg yolks and cottage cheese in them. ~P.J. Merry Christmas To the BEST GRANDMA AND GRANDPA! I Love you! Justin

The People’s Press Holiday Magic 2007 Page 23

What "Yuletide Greetings" Means to Me Maura Jo Lynch, MA I don't celebrate Christmas, and I don't celebrate Hanukkah either. I am a witch, a pagan. Being a witch is not something that I often disclose to strangers. I don't often discuss my beliefs with people who are not close friends or family because there are so many widespread misconceptions. Some witches are part of an organized, hierarchical and structured religion. Some are part of small groups with shared beliefs, and some practice alone or with their own families without a formalized affiliation. As with many spiritualities, faiths and religions, there are many different sects, or Traditions within the pagan movement. The Tradition I am most familiar with is called the Reclaiming tradition, and that forms the basis of my spiritual practices. I am not attempting to speak for all witches or all pagans here, but I do hope that this little piece may begin some dialog between peoples of different faiths and spiritual beliefs. As a pagan, I follow the seasons and mark them with annual ceremonies that reflect the rhythm of the Earth and the cycle of life. Every faith has seasonal rituals. Pagans celebrate the turning of the Wheel of the Year with eight main holidays: New Year is Samhain (Halloween), where "the veil between the worlds is the thinnest" and we honor our beloved dead and celebrate the birth of babies born that year. Next is the Winter Solstice (Yule), where we celebrate regeneration and the rebirth of the Sun, as days begin to get longer after this, the longest night of the year passes. On Brigid (Imbolc, Candlemas, celebrated on February 2nd), we honor the goddess of hearth, home and smithwork as we witness the first signs of spring. The Spring Equinox (Oestar) is celebrated with early planting, both physically in the garden and metaphysically in our personal lives, again honoring the endless cycle of life, of rebirth. May 1st is the celebration of Beltane, of all forms of love, fertility, creativity and healing. The Summer Solstice is the shortest night of the year, where we witness the "death" of the Sun. August 2nd (Lammas, Lughnasad) is the celebration of the first harvest, and of beginning to prepare for winter, of what we need to store up to make it through the cold, dark season both literally and figuratively. At the Fall Equinox (Mabon), day and night are again in balance and this is the main harvest/thanksgiving celebration of the year, time to relax and reflect on our blessings, friends and families. These holidays are not so "out there," here are some over-simplified parallels with the American-Catholic culture I was raised in: Halloween is a time of year when we explore the idea of death, without being fearful. Also falls close to the Mexican Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which also celebrates loved ones who have passed on. Brigid shares the date with Groundhog's Day when we also look for early signs of spring. Oestar and Easter, are both holidays celebrating "new life,"a chance for forgiveness and "replanting" the seeds of goodness in daily life. Fall Equinox is right around Thanksgiving where we celebrate family and friends. And if you were a kid in the 1970's or before you may remember the Yule Log tradition, or the phrase "Yuletide Greetings," which are both taken to be Christmas-related, a holiday which also celebrates birth and a New Beginning for the world. When my spouse and I were married, we blended some pagan traditions into ceremony and added notes into our program to explain to friends and family who wouldn't have known what we were doing. We tried hard to do something that was meaningful for us, and to include our loved ones in it. I guess it worked, no one seemed put out. As a matter of fact, many people said it was the most beautiful wedding ceremony they'd been to! When my father died from cancer last year, I was able to call on the seven directions in a subtle way that honored not only my own spirituality, but also his. Again, I was told it was beautiful. Now that I have a family, I find myself working on how to recreate the warmth and sincerity of sharing our wedding, the honesty and love of the eulogy for my dad, as I begin to try to share more pagan holidays with my family. We've had a Solstice Tree for a few years now. We usually celebrate Christmas over two days, one with my spouse's family, one with my folks. Used to be that my spouse would stay out of my ceremonies, but that may be changing. If I'm celebrating with my kids, it seems silly to leave anyone from the household out. We keep things very simple for now, a little ritual, a story about the day and what it means to us on a personal level, then some yummy holidays snacks. Who knows how any of this may change as my children get older, but I am sure they will have a great influence on how we celebrate holidays. (There are some great resources out in books and on the web now as well.) For me, holidays are a threefold experience. They are about personal growth on a spiritual level. They are about connecting to the Divine, whatever form that may take for a person. And they are about celebrating the gifts we've been given in the form of our friends and family. Folk Singer Dar Williams has this great song called "The Christians and the Pagans" that ends with this lyric: So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able Lighting trees in darkness, learning new ways from the old, and Making sense of history and drawing warmth out of the cold. I wish you bright blessings this holiday season, and throughout the new year.

QRWA to Receive CL&P Grant for Turtle Crossing Signs The Quinnipiac River Watershed Association (QRWA) will receive a grant Monday, Nov. 26 from Northeast Utilities' Environmental Community Grant program for the next phase of its Turtle Crossing Project, a volunteer based effort to protect the remaining box and wood turtle populations in the watershed. The presentation will be at one of the turtle crossing sites. The animals are vanishing due to rapid development of their habitat and associated urban threats, including motor vehicles. The $996 grant will be used by QRWA to install turtle crossing signs during nesting season (late May-early June) at sites previously identified by volunteers working under a grant from US Fish and Wildlife Foundation, according to Mary Mushinsky, executive director of QRWA. David Weinberg of Northeast Utilities Environmental Community Grant Program will present the award at one of the Cheshire crossing sites in the presence of volunteers Deb Mason, a "circuit rider" for the turtle project, and Jacqueline and Sara Wieloch, turtle crossing volunteers who live at the crossing site. The Wielochs' property is located at 1420 Cheshire Street, Cheshire. Mushinsky will display a model of one of the turtle crossing signs, designed to remind drivers to avoid striking the slow-moving animals as they cross roads to reach their nesting area. QRWA previously received a grant from CL&P in support of the association's osprey nesting program. Time: 9:15 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2007 Place: home of Jacqueline and Sara Wieloch, 1420 Cheshire St, Cheshire, CT Christmas begins about the first of December with an office party and ends when you finally realize what you spent, around April fifteenth of the next year. ~P.J. I sometimes think we expect too much of Christmas Day. We try to crowd into it the long arrears of kindliness and humanity of the whole year. As for me, I like to take my Christmas a little at a time, all through the year. And thus I drift along into the holidays - let them overtake me unexpectedly - waking up some find morning and suddenly saying to myself: "Why, this is Christmas Day!" ~David Grayson

Meriden Economic Development News Trudy Magnolia, Economic Development Assistant Transportation or transport is the moving of people or goods from one place to another. Road, air, rail and water are the principal modes of transportation. Meriden has three of the four covered in a significant way. One of the best attributes Meriden has is its convenient location. Much has been made of our easy access from I91, I-691, Rte. 5 and 15. You can't beat that as an incentive for moving your business to Meriden. Meriden maintains approximately 185 miles of paved roads. A goal for the Department of Public Works is to rehabilitate the maximum number of streets yearly based on recommendations made by our paving consultant. The work may include milling and overlay (for instance, the recently completed work on Lewis Avenue in the vicinity of Westfield Shoppingtown); total reconstruction (complete removal and replacement of the roadbase and blacktop); and lastly reclamation, which is the reuse of the existing material in place after grinding and blending new stone with the old stone. Meriden's public transportation network consists of three routes with a service area of approximately 24 square miles. The Meriden rail station is its hub. Free transfer connections to Middletown, New Haven, Wallingford, North Haven and New Britain are components of the system. Additionally, the Meriden Transit District operates as express commuter service between Meriden and Hartford. This Meriden to Hartford service operates Monday to Friday two buses in each direction per day. Recently we added the Meriden Cross-town Saturday only service. It runs from Kohl's Plaza to MidState Medical Center via the rail station. We also have our own airport. The Meriden Markham Municipal Airport (MMK) is a full service airport that meets all aviation needs including aircraft rental, flight instruction, ground schools, maintenance shop, charter flights, pilot supplies, hangars and tie downs. They are open seven days a week with an allnight remote lighting system for instrument landings. Less Fully Insured and Licensed CT Lic. #104727 than 100 miles from Meriden is LaGuardia Airport, JFK Airport and in our own state we have Bradley International and Tweed New Haven Airports. Amtrak provides Meriden's existing rail service, serving Boston, New York and Washington, DC. The good news is that downtown Meriden has been identified in the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Commuter Rail Implementation Study completed by Wilbur Smith Associates in 2005 for the Connecticut Department of Transportation as a key station stop along the proposed New Haven to Springfield commuter rail line. Now that the 15-acre HUB site has been cleared, the development of an intermodal transportation center immediately adjacent to the HUB site is a key component of the redevelopment of the site. While Meriden doesn't have a major waterway system, the Connecticut River access is 10 miles away. We do, however, have bragging rights regarding our water system for recreation. Black Pond, Silver Lake, Hanover Pond and the Quinnipiac River provide activities ranging from kayaking to fishing (allowed by State license). Healthwise, the best mode of transportation is by foot. Nothing compares to our Quinnipiac River Gorge Trail near Hanover Pond. "Red Bridge" connects Oregon Road with the route to Cheshire following the former rail bed westward along Hours: Tuesday.- Friday. 7-6; Sat 7-4; Sun. 7-2 the gorge. Walking this two mile trail far outweighs transport by road, air, rail or water.

OPERATION: MUSIC AID

Thank you to all of you who attended the Central Connecticut Civic Youth Orchestra's concert on December 18th. It was a very fun time and the CCCYO sounded great. Please come to the next one if you missed this one. As wonderful as it was, right afterward, it feels unfinished to me, and I hope I have your indulgence to put the finishing touch on it here. The CCCYO has its own charity to which it gives promotional administrative effort and networking space and other considerations, Operation: Music Aid, and so we invited Mr. George Hauaer, Co-founder of Operation: Music Aid to our performance and he told us an update on what the OMA is doing these days. In his own words; Mr. George Hauer: "OPERATION: MUSIC AID was founded to supply guitars and keyboards to wounded military service personnel now in military hospitals for extended care. We supply the instruments to the hospitals and they are distributed as needed, to assist in physical and psychological rehabilitation, as well as for morale. We want to make sure that these young men and women are not forgotten. Our goal is to get an instrument to every one of our heroes who have been injured defending our freedom. Operation: Music Aid is 100% apolitical and expresses no opinion on the merits of the current conflict. Our sole purpose is to deliver instruments to the hospitals for the wounded. All instruments received at the hospitals become the property of the individual patients. We also have delivered two full-sized music organs to Walter Reed Medical Hospital Chapels, to aid in the spiritual needs of our soldiers and their families. We have many celebrity endorsements and letters from elected officials thanking us for our work. Now, a new era has started for Operation: Music Aid. CentComm, under General Petraius' command, has requested instruments for the emergency ambulance technicians, to help mitigate some of the stress that they face daily. We urgently need money to ship the instruments that we get from donors. Please visit us on the web at www.operationmusicaid.org and help us help our soldiers who give so much. Thank you." With that, George stepped out of the middle of the performance space at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center and we all applauded him warmly. We gave him donations and we wished him the best. But, as I say, it felt unfinished. Then I realized why- it didn't seem like enough. George's manner is unassuming, and you might not know it to look at him; George has the power to heal. George and his business partner and O:MA Co-Founder, Craig Knicely (now, somewhat on-the-mend after his own, several, life-changing injuries in the earlier Iraq War) have tapped into the healing power of music and the healing power of the human soul. As the War goes on, the work isn't finished, so we, the CCCYO, ask for your assistance here in the People's Press. In this, the Season of Giving, we send Operation: Music Aid our congratulations for the 778 instruments that they have sent and give them this space as our humble contribution to their cause. If you can help financially, please do. They need money to send the instruments that they get donated. Please go to their website and see what wonderful work they do. It is like no other, believe me. Can you imagine the stress that the ambulance personnel have each and every day? When George told me about General Petraius' request for help for the Ambulance personnel, I said a quiet prayer for them, right on the spot. We don't think of these things back here at home. But once in a while, we need to help so things get better, and this will make things better. There are even military personnel who are going to volunteer and give guitar lessons to the men and women who receive those instruments, to try to ease their psychological burdens. That's how much they care for each other! George and Craig have really tapped into an amazing way to give direct help to those who need it. Please see what you can do, thanks. I'm helping them to write a grant for next year. It just feels right, I guess it can't feel finished until everyone comes home and heals. On another note, I thank Andy and Dawn Reynolds for their full-year scholarship to the Central Connecticut Civic Youth Orchestra. It will be formally presented later in the year at a CCCYO function, but I want all of the People's Press' readers to know that the student musicians of the CCCYO, Music Director and Conductor Mrs. Veronica Germain and I are very grateful for this show of support. Homeless Animals need your help during the Holidays

The average person thinks about three things during the holiday season: gift shopping, family, and food! As we all scramble around trying to check off items on what seem to be our never ending to do lists, myself included, I would like to ask everyone who reads this article to possibly add just one more item. I know this is a huge request especially at this time of year, but because we are all so busy during these months, homeless animals are even more neglected. They suffer while we celebrate, it may be sad for most of you to think about, but it is the truth. While each day flies by for us in a blur and we beg the calendar for more time, homeless, abandoned, neglected and abused dogs and cats, sit in the small, cold cells of a shelter while each hour goes by slower then the one before. They have all the time in the world to be sad, lonely and bored, and although they are "only animals" to most people, any pet owner with a beloved pet knows dogs and cats are social animals that require love and stimulation from humans, in order for them to function and live the way they were intended to. Granted there are many homeless people who spend the holidays alone and even without a holiday dinner, and although this is heartbreaking as well, people tend to think of the less fortunate at this time of year and there are many organizations and groups who will help these individuals during the holidays and winter months. If everyone says, "people are more important" and "if I'm going to help or be charitable it will be for people", then the problem is animals are put on the back burner and forgotten. Rescuing animals is a 365 day around the clock job, it isn't seasonal or something to do just on the weekends. Dogs and cats enter shelters every day and sit and wait until someone thinks of adopting, and then hopefully goes down to the shelter, and hopefully notices them, and then possibly decides they like them enough to take home. These animals have the odds against them and if in a kill shelter they have a ticking clock to fight against as well. There are many ways you can help animals at this time of year without actually adopting. Just as you would at a people shelter, you can drop off donations of canned food, (for dogs and cats obviously), or blankets and towels, toys, treats, or collars, dishes and leashes, even crates are needed too! Or if you can squeeze in a little more time, you can go and play with or ask to walk a dog, maybe brush them or just give them treats. Whatever the shelter will allow you to do of course, but every second of it benefits the animals greatly. I am a volunteer at a local animal shelter and I can remember one particular Saturday over the summer when my boyfriend and I almost decided to skip our usually visit to the shelter to walk the dogs because it was so hot out. And hey it was the summer, there's so much other stuff to do right? Well we pushed ourselves and went and walked 11 dogs each for about 20 minutes a piece. It turns out we were the only volunteers who showed up that day. The shelter is closed on Sundays and Mondays so if we hadn't gone, 22 dogs would not have been walked or given one on one attention for three straight days. You have to believe that you will make a difference and you will. If you are in a position to adopt however, I cannot encourage you any more. It is a wonderful and rewarding experience that to me is what the holidays should be about. Today things are very commercial and a lot us loose sight of the true meaning of the holidays. It shouldn't be about gifts or decorations, but generosity and compassion, and humans aren't the only ones who are need of these things. Please consider adoption before going to a breeder or pet store because cute pups will always find homes but unfortunately the same can't be said for grown dogs, mama dogs or seniors. And dogs and cats who are missing a leg or an eye, they are at an even greater disadvantage. We may live in a vain society but if you ask me beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Believe me when I say you will be rewarded ten fold for you willingness to adopt and love someone elses "trash". The winter is an especially hard time of year on the animals, they deserve to be in warm, loving homes, so please open your hearts and your homes to these creatures who want nothing more then to love you for the rest of their days. Thank you and happy holidays - Nicole Giannetta Christmas is for children. But it is for grown-ups too. Even if it is a headache, a chore, and nightmare, it is a period of necessary defrosting of chill and hide-bound hearts. ~Lenora Mattingly Weber
