Parody accounts could change cellphone policy Elizabeth Cortez and Maria Ruiz Staff Writers With new Instagram parody accounts of the schools’ student publications, Principal Deb Smith threatens to revoke current cell phone rules and implement a new cell phone policy.

Last semester, an unknown individual created two parody Instagram accounts of The Pearl Post and PearlNetNews: “ThePearliestPost” and “PearlNutNews.” The parody accounts mock the school newspaper and broadcast’s official Instagram accounts and repost photos with different captions.

It was first seen as a joke but as time progressed, staff members from The Pearl Post felt that these accounts crossed the line from parody and are beginning to edge towards satire.t It could damage the reputation of the publications by making them appear unprofessional and implying false statements.

Publications promote students work and instead, these accounts portray the published work of students in a negative way.

“Initially I didn’t think it was that big of a deal,” The Pearl Post Opinion/ Engagement Editor Kristen Cintigo said.

“I just thought somebody was just making a joke. Farther along, it seemed kind of mean and it seemed kind of rude to do considering the person doesn’t seem to be in our publication.”

The parody accounts have been reported to Instagram, however the social media platform says the accounts or posts don’t violate its terms of services.

Due to the accounts being seen as a parody, there is not much one can do to shut these accounts down unless legal action

is taken. Copyright law states that a creator of a photo or article is the owner of that piece. Their work cannot be republished without the owner’s permission, but you can republish parts of the work.

“The key to parody is that you must be mocking that piece of creative work itself,” Student Press Law Center Senior Legal Fellow Frank LoMonte said in an interview via email. “As long as it’s clear that these are takeoffs for purposes of humor or commentary, then it’s permissible to duplicate a lot of the creative elements of the original.”

Parents and teachers have reached out to Smith complaining about the accounts and how they are potentially affecting students. She is yet to find the people (or person) hiding behind this, therefore Smith threatened to enforce a previous and more restrictive phone policy amongst students. The current cell phone policy allows students to use their electronic devices before school, during nutrition and lunch and after school. During the school year of 2013-2014, the School Site Council banned electronic device usage during school hours due to three Twitter accounts making racist and derogatory comments about students and staff.

“You can’t just get an account pulled down from a social-media platform because it makes you angry,” LaMonte said. “There has to be either a violation of the platform’s own terms of service or a violation of a legal right.

Creators have refused to reveal themselves and still continue to repost online. Smith is closely watching the accounts but as of now, no decision has been made on whether or not to ban the use of electronic devices during school hours.

“If a student has their own Instagram account and their putting up stuff that’s bullying, or mean, or sexual..

It’s my responsibility to look into that and communicate with parents to either get them to take it down, clean it up, or close the account,” Smith said.

Study hall designed to support students’ improvment Angel Van Horn Staff Writer Freshmen in need of getting their grades up spend every lunch in Room 22 doing homework, catching up on work or studying to improve scores.

“The goal is to help the freshmen improve their grades,” journalism teacher Adriana Chavira said. “They were not successful in their first semester and we want to make sure we give them the tools to do their homework and study and improve their grades.”

For three weeks, some of the struggling freshmen students have been working to bring up their grades in the classes they need help in. Although study hall is held in Room 22, it is not just for failing journalism students. Biology teacher James Morrison and math teachers Leslie Hicks and Dan Cramer are among the staff who supervise and provide tutoring.

During a staff meeting in January, teachers were placed in groups according to the grade levels they teach. While discussing new ways to help their students

improve, the ninth grade teachers agreed on creating a study hall to help their failing students succeed. Study hall is only available for freshmen students to study, catch on work and receive help.

After the spring five-week progress report came out, study hall became an official priority for the freshmen. Every Monday, progress reports are printed and reviewed by the students and Smith to see if their grades are improving. If some students have successfully brought up their grades at the end of each 5-week grading period, study hall is off their schedule and new students who are struggling in their classes will be brought in.

“I think little by little they’re getting their work done,” Chavira said. “We have different people helping them understand the concepts.”

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ a visual classic Angel Van Horn

Based out of Los Angeles, the bicultural band La Santa Cecilia is advocating for immigrant rights while simultaneously encouraging young Chicanos to embrace both sides of their culture.

La Santa Cecilia, named for the patron saint of musicians, was originally formed in 2007. As teenagers, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient José ‘Pepe’ Carlos and lead singer Marisol ‘La Marisoul’ Hernández sang traditional Mexican boleros and rancheras outside of her grandfather’s shop on Olvera Street in Downtown L.A. They then met bassist Alex Bendaña and percussionist Miguel ‘Oso’ Ramirez, who were the last two members to join. The Chicano band, whose genre ranges from traditional Mexican cumbia to jazz, has released music in both English and Spanish as a way to pay homage to their Mexican upbringing in America.

They’ve since released five records, three of which have been nominated for Grammys: their 2014 record “Treinta Dias” winning the Grammy for Best Latin Rock Album. In their acceptance speech for the Grammy, they dedicated their win to the “11 million undocumented people who that live and work really hard...and still need a more dignified life in (the U.S).” The band’s single “Ice El Hielo” has received attention for highlighting the struggles undocumented immigrants face in the workplace and day-to-day life.

‘La Marisouls’ piquant vocals on every song are undoubtedly what make the band so unique and unreal. Throughout the band’s most recent record “Amar y Vivir,” her smoother-than-honey voice can be heard crying, laughing and singing the lyrics to popular songs from artists like Mexican icon Juan Gabriel, Café Tacvba, Consuelo Velasquez and Violet Parra. Each song off the record is accompanied by a video shot in a street, bar or restaurant in Mexico.

“A Wrinkle in Time,” a magical-adventure based on the 1962 novel where a teenage girl, her little brother Charles Wallace, (Deric McCabe) and friend, (Levi Miller), embark on a mission to find her missing father, may be the reason you leave the movie theater needing tissues.

Meg Murry (Storm Reid), an insecure girl whose father disappeared four years ago, was given the chance to rescue him from the depths of the universe by The Mrs. (Oprah Winfrey), (Reese Witherspoon) and (Mindy Kaling), who are forces of energy with the power to tame the universe. The disappearance of Meg’s father (Chris Pine) takes a toll on her self-esteem, social life and the way she views the world around her, which led The Mrs. to come to her once they heard the cry from her father for help.

Tapping into the unknown philosophy of the universe, “A Wrinkle in Time” takes kids on a journey that sparks imagination and creativity. The mystical plot is an attention grabber especially with the use of graphics, special effects and nail biting journeys the characters take to find the scientist who wanted to shake hands with the universe.

‘Love, Simon’ out of the closet and into the box office Angie Rumbo Staff Writer

“Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” a popular young adult novel by Becky Albertalli, revolves around a young man struggling to come to terms with his sexuality, has been made into a movie and will be released on March 16.

Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) is a teenager in high school who loves to hang out with his friends and family members. He’s living the teenage life but he has a secret: he’s gay. He hasn’t come out yet due to the fear of being rejected by his friends and family, and fears of accepting himself as well. The film follows his struggle to live the life of a teen who wants to come out.

Director Greg Berlanti has directed other films and television shows such as “Green Lantern,” “Pan,” “The Flash” and “Supergirl.” The film’s cast include Katherine Langford (Leah Burke,) Miles Heizer (Cal Price,W) Jennifer Garner (Emily Spier) and Josh Duhamel (Jack Spier.) Langford has been in the famous Netflix show, “Thirteen Reasons Why,” alongside Heizer.

Heizer has also been in “Nerve” and “Parenthood.”

The drama/romance, rated PG-13, depicts how you should never be afraid of who you are. It shows how you should accept yourself because you never know what great things can come from being you.

With spring break quickly approaching, many students are left with the question of how they will spend their newfound free time. Here are a few ideas on how to have a fun and productive break.

Beaches - Since spring in California typically reaches high temperatures, the beach is the perfect place to cool down with family and friends. There are many activities you can do at the beach including swimming, surfing, reading and playing volleyball.

Visit museums - Museums are a great place to have an educational yet entertaining experience. Different museums such as the Getty also provide a quiet and calming area for you to finish your homework or have a relaxing lunch. The entrance for the Getty is free but parking can cost up to $10.

Volunteer - Get in those community services hours and volunteer during spring break. For example, you can sign up for beach clean-ups or volunteer at a local animal shelter. If you are a junior or a senior, the service learning projects are coming up and this can be a great time to get them done.

Farmers markets - There are many local farmers markets held in April. Farmers markets are free to attend, but parking prices can vary. One popular market is the Olvera Street Farmers Market in Downtown Los Angeles. Olvera Street has many street vendors that sell food, clothes, dolls, handmade jewelry and many other items.

As the wind blows, sophomore Andres Prieto and his classmates run back and forth trying to make their kites fly the highest.

After reading the novel “The Kite Runner,” Ron Baer’s third and fifth period English classes got a chance to fly their kites.

“I like that they had the experience of trying to make a kite,” English teacher Ron Baer said. “I think for the book they need to experience how hard it is to fly a kite and how much talent it takes.”

On Feb. 13, Baer’s third and fifth period English classes read Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner,” which describes the Afghan tradition where everyone comes together and flies their kites as part of a competition.

After finishing the novel, students were assigned a kite-making project to represent the tradition. The students were provided with patterned scrapbook paper, bamboo and string.

The process was challenging for many students. Trying to balance the kite so it is able to fly proved to be a difficult task and required a lot of time and patience.

“You have to shave off the bamboo so it could be balanced and if it wasn’t you would have to scrap it and do it again,” Prieto said.

Some students were able to get their kites to fly as high as the basketball hoops, while others struggled to make it successfully leave the ground.

“It was my second time making a kite and the first time it failed but this time it worked,” sophomore Nicole Gabino said.

“It flew on the first try, it just all depends on how well your coordination is.”

It was Baer’s first time doing an activity like this with his classes and after completing it, he considers the project to

be a great way to celebrate the ending of the book. He plans to continue doing this activity with his sophomores.

“I would do it for the connection of the book, if I do “The Kite Runner” again next year,” Baer said.

Paniagua proves that hard work pays off Rosa Lemus Staff Writer

Hard work often results in amazing opportunities and sophomore Keona Paniagua is yet another perfect example of this.

Paniagua was nominated for a $20,000 scholarship from the Warren Christopher Scholarship Fund on Feb. 12.

Each year, 10 to 15 sophomores from the entire Los Angeles Unified School District are nominated for this scholarship.

These students are selected because they have proven themselves to be hard workers through their academic and extracurricular achievements and have pushed through challenging circumstances.

“I felt overwhelmed at first because it’s such a big scholarship and it’s a lot of money,” Paniagua said. “I just felt honored to be nominated.”

Paniagua lives up to these qualifications both inside and outside the classroom. As a sophomore, Paniagua tackles two AP classes and is still able to maintain her impressive grades.

In addition to being a straight-A student, Paniagua balances her time with various sports including basketball, volleyball and track. She also excels in martial arts,

“I think she is most qualified,” Counselor Martina Torres said. “She is extremely active, she goes above and beyond and I think she has a great personality and great character.”

The founders O’Melveny and Myers LLP initiated the scholarship in 1992 to honor Warren Christopher, former Secretary of State. Every year, one outstanding sophomore from each LAUSD school is selected for a chance to win the scholarship and compete with other nominees for the award.

The monetary award is used to help inspire students to complete high school and follow their aspirations in college and the many years to come.

Paniagua plans on majoring in kinesiology and becoming a physical therapist.

She also plans to continue to use her ability to prioritize and balance her time wisely to go into collegiate boxing.

“I have a good sense of responsibility.

I take care of things when they need to be taken care of,” Paniagua said. “I know how to prioritize properly and I make sure the important things are done first and what isn’t as important comes second.”

Club Corner:

Arts and crafts makes a comeback Elizabeth Cortez

Arts and crafts may seem like a thing of the past, but with the help of Arts and Crafts Club, students are able to once again enjoy this creative pastime.

“We created the club to get the creativity going in this school and we wanted to see if people were still interested with arts and crafts,” junior Pauline Miranda said.

Arts and Crafts club was created by a group of artistic individuals: Alyssa Cancio, Marjina Haque and Pauline Miranda whose hopes were to inspire more creativity on campus and continue the legacy of Fashion Club.

Last year’s Fashion Club serves as inspiration for the activities done in Arts and Crafts Club. The club held different events and activities such as a fashion show where they modeled upcycled clothing.

Since President Cancio excels in crafts, they decided to take a different route. This year, the club looks into the world of fashion and travels further down, covering all sorts of craft-related activities.

The Arts and Crafts Club does activities including learning the intricate steps of sewing tote bags and embroidering letters and various designs.

“It (this club) was kind of an attachment because last year we had fashion club but the president of that club isn’t here this year, so we didn’t want to continue that without her,” sophomore Haque said. “We went for the next best alterna-

The club mainly focuses on one-onone teaching where members are taught the craft of sewing and embroidery. Cancio is well-experienced and brings her knowledge in crafting to every meeting.

She works with students on the sewing machine while Haque teaches them embroidery skills.

They will be moving on to learning to form different patterns soon. As of now, the club is aiming to have a steady project

to participate in Comic Con. Although the specific details are still unclear, the club presidents hope to put together an art exhibit for the event.

The Arts and Crafts Club meets every Wednesday during lunch in Room 6.

“We don’t just sew clothes in there,” Cancio said. ”We do various stuff like pencil pouches or stuffed animals. Our goal is to teach people new hobbies.”

Amezcua recognized as an ‘Everyday Hero’ Maria Ruiz

Custodian Juan Amezcua works tirelessly throughout campus in order to keep it in peak condition.

In February, Amezcua was honored with a nomination for the California Classified School Employee of the Year Program in recognition of his dedication and hard work.

“I feel flattered,” Amezcua said. “I’ve been with the district for 15 years and it feels good to be appreciated, I’m really grateful.”

Plant Manager Sal Rivas submitted an “Everyday Heroes” recognition message acknowledging Amezcua’s commitment and key role to the school. The Everyday Heroes Recognition Program is an award presented to Los Angeles Unified School District employees for their quality work to the school. From the Everyday Heroes message, a select group of employees are selected for the nomination.

“I noticed and recognized Juan’s dedication to the school and his work ethic and his performance has been consistent for the past four years,” Rivas said. “He deserves this recognition because he never misses work and his dedication to his work

As acceptance letters begin to arrive, a new challenge arises for seniors--choosing their future college. Here is a list of different aspects to consider to help decide on the ideal school for you.

Internships - Making sure your college provides internships and other opportunities to gain experience in your field of interest is important to consider. Having these opportunities benefits students because they can help expose them to their potential future career.

Location - Location should also affect your final decision. Being closer to home means having the option to visit your family more often. Going to a college further from you might result in seeing family and friends less often but having more independence.

“He is so respectful and kind,” Principal Deb Smith said. “He takes his job very seriously and he’s just so awesome.”

Clubs - Extracurricular activities such as clubs and groups are something else that make or break your college experience. If you are looking for the type of college that offers hundreds of clubs to choose from, make sure to research what your college offers. Keep in mind that smaller colleges typically don’t offer as many options as larger ones.

Social life - What surrounds a college may not seem important to your decision, but when students are not in their dorms studying, many like to go out and eat at different places or go shopping. If you prefer having stores, restaurants and other shops nearby then consider looking at what surrounds your campus.

UCs and CSUs decree higher tuition fees

Last month, the University of California’s board of regents approved a 2.7 percent tuition hike, or $342 increase for an academic year, after a six-year long freeze on tuition increases.

“It’s annoying because they are raising their tuition but we’re still getting the same amount of financial aid,” said senior Ruzanna Manvelyan, who was accepted into more than one UC. The decision comes after months of deliberation plagued by student protests and opposition from higher ups. The original vote that was to take place Jan. 24 was delayed due to student petitions rejecting a tuition increase and a letter written by Gov. Jerry Brown to the board of regents.

The letter was an outreach to the board urging them to vote against a tuition raise he felt was premature and a burden on students.

Brown claimed state funding towards the University of California had increased $1.2 billion since 2012, but UC President Janet Napolitano stated that per-student funding is less than half of what it was 20 years ago. This year, Brown proposed a measly 3 percent increase in base funding for the University of California and the Cal State systems compared to the 4 percent given in previous years. The UC board of regents is worried about this decreased funding and feels a tuition hike will keep the 10-campus system at the level of prestige it is at now.

“They shouldn’t because if a teacher is armed with something and they get really furious, you never know if the teacher could be bipolar,” freshman Natalie Castillo said. “I don’t trust them with a gun.”

Lack of school security, leave schools vulnerable to gun violence

A

midst the rise of school shootings and threats to schools across the nation, students are becoming anxious and even paranoid regarding their safety at school.

As an editorial staff, we do not believe we are safe in school if there is no change to the current gun laws, which make it possible for almost anyone to purchase a firearm.

An 18 year old is not allowed to purchase alcohol because they are see as not mature enough to make potentially life-altering decisions. On the other hand, an 18 year old is also able to purchase a gun and have the ability to shoot up a school.

The age restrictions put into place in regards to gun control aren’t the only fac-

This national crisis has begun to deteriorate the beauty of an education and what it offers to the lives of millions of kids around the country. An environment once filled with hopeful aspirations has now been replaced with feelings of anxiety and paranoia.

The United States government can no longer sit by and do nothing while children in schools across the country continue to die. It is time to change the dangerous course this country is taking.

Parody accounts cause frustration for publication staff members The recent creation of parody accounts for The Pearl Post and Pearl Net News has caused issues and division among students.

In December, these parody accounts of the school’s student publications began posting the same photos we post on social media onto their parody accounts, but with misleading and often hurtful captions.

Principal Deb Smith has become involved in the situation, trying to find the person responsible in an attempt to get all of this nonsense to stop. Smith has also threatened to bring back the previous, more restrictive cell phone policy in order to try and prevent something like this from happening again in the future.

Students have begun to accuse others of being responsible for these accounts without any form of tangible proof. Although this is a time of investigation, not a time of student body division, we should not let this form of cyberbullying translate into a hostile environment at school.

The actions of these parody accounts hurt the integrity and credibility of our award-winning publications. They make our staff seem unprofessional and negatively affect how outsiders view our school. It is also unfair for students to worry about whether or not they will get made fun when the parody accounts take our photos.

With the nation’s current President constantly criticizing the work of journalists and labeling it as “fake news,” this situation is not helping the way society views professional and student journalists. These accounts simply serve as yet another way to depict journalists as liars and discredit all of their work. As student journalists, it’s our job to place priority of credible sources over those who are only trying to make a joke of it.

It is extremely hard for student journalists to be taken seriously since many believe that we do not possess the maturity to accurately inform the student body.

Censorship of student publications is already a huge problem and these satirical posts could potentially serve as a reason for someone to feel the need to intervene with our staff’s social media presence, potentially placing restriction on what we can post.

As an editorial staff, we are not affiliated nor condone the posts of The Pearliest Post or Pearl Nut News. We also urge students to not get involved and to stop attempting to blame others. The people responsible for these accounts simply crave attention and we should refrain from giving it to them. We are asking whoever is responsible for these accounts to take them down and stop parodying our publications.

Students empowered to speak about gun control David Eskichyan Staff Writer

Three months into 2018 and 12 school shootings later, students across the nation have taken matters into their own hands, organizing three marches, the first one on March 14.

“I agree with this because a lot of the stuff that happens at schools shouldn’t be happening at schools,” freshman Ariel Dabila said. “I want to do this to support everyone to not shoot schools. I want to save kids from getting shot or bullied or fighting.”

After various failed attempts for stricter gun-control laws, students are using their First Amendment rights as an opportunity to advocate for stricter gun control laws and more mental health resources for those in need. After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. on Feb. 14 that killed 17 students and staff, students feel obligated to stand up and fight for their safety in schools, concerned that their school may be next.

a way to advocate their motto of “never again” and call for action in a community where they feel adults have failed them.

“I think that adults in our country have really put young students down,” Principal Deborah Smith said. “People who are in the position to make change have put them down and it’s a disappointment to see that they have let us all down and I am very supportive for students to step up and say we’ve had enough and they’re demanding to take action to stop this.”

Various national walkouts have been organized, including #Enough National School Walkout on March 14, followed

by March For Our Lives on March 24 and #NationalSchoolWalkout on April 20.

“We, as a school, are prepared to support students voice that students have the right to have their voices heard and have the right to free speech,” Smith said.

All three walkouts have been organized in response to the lack of actions by Congress for stricter gun regulations. On March 14, a month after the shooting in Parkland, Fla., students all over the nation will walk out of their schools at 10 a.m. across each time zone. The walkout will last for 17 minutes, a minute dedicated for each innocent life lost during the shooting.

On March 24, students from Parkland with support from national organizations have planned a march in Washington, D.C. to call for school safety and gun control.

Similar rallies will take place around the country, as the march is not only limited to Washington, D.C. In remembrance and for the 19th anniversary of the Columbine School Shooting, #NationalSchoolWalkout will take place on April 20 and high school students are encouraged to walk out at 10 a.m. until the end of the school day.

High School who plan to participate in the national walkout on March 14 will not be penalized for walking out, as long as students’ actions are not disruptive, as Smith has the right to discipline any students if they are being disruptive. Disciplinary actions will be handled by a case by case basis according to district policy.

“I would participate although many people say it won’t make a difference because I feel like if we’re all united, we’ll be able to change at least something,” junior Mariana Sifuentes said.

In hopes of being heard, some teachers are supportive of students walking out, and some teachers plan to join students, although district policy limits teachers on their rights to walkout and protest.

“I would support students by walking out, but I can’t by contract,” Spanish

teacher Glenda Hurtado said. “I would like to, but by contract they’re only allowing me five minutes or else I don’t get paid.”

Organizers of the event have put up petitions around various location around campus for students who are interested in participating in the walkout. More information about the event will be sent out once it is available. Students are also encouraged to wear orange, which is the color used by many who support gun control.

“Enough is enough,” sophomore Alyanna Ahorro said. “What if our school was next? I am 100 percent in support of the walkouts and I would definitely participate. It’s empowering that we’re finally taking a stand for what we think is right.”

While the Parkland shooting has placed the spotlight on gun laws, many teenagers have been affected psychologically and mentally. To those who need help and support, many institutions and programs are available.

These programs focus on aiding student traumatized by the incident. Thes organizations provide several forms of help, such as group counseling, individual counseling, therapeutic methods and quick access to someone to talk to.

Teen line From 6-10 p.m., the non-profit hotline takes in calls, messages and emails, all answered by teenage volunteers supervised by mental health professionals.

These teenagers are willing to listen to any problems and they intend to provide guidance and open up options in order

to reach the best solution or decision.

There are a variety of therapies such as group therapy, which may be beneficial to teenagers who don’t want to feel alone and also want to find other teens in similar situations. Even outdoor-oriented therapies like surfing are offered.

fter a recent shooting at Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School in Florida where 17 people were killed and an increase in gun-related incidents in schools across the nation, students and staff have begun to question school safety.

“I think that one of the biggest things that kids can do is support the idea that if you see or hear something, you say something,” Daniel Pearl Magnet High Schol(DPMHS) principal Deb Smith said. “We have to get rid of this idea that if you tell, then you’re a snitch.”

Schools throughout the country have begun to reassess the systems they have in place in case of an active shooter after Nikolas Cruz, a disgruntled former student a, opened fire at the Parkland, Florida, school and left 34 injured or dead behind before being arrested.

One option being explored to increase security is placing a buzzer at the front gate, according to Smith. The system, which has been proposed to the district, would entail a camera being installed and any visitors during school hours would have to be buzzed in by the front desk.

This would ensure a more reliable record of visitors to the school.

“I would say that I kind of feel safe, not 100 percent, but I feel safe,” sophomore Rose Chevere said. “I think maybe having security would make me feel safer.

The front gate is closed but the side gates are open and it’s pretty easy to jump over.”

DPMHS does not hire full-time safety officers due to its size and the cost of filling this position, according to Smith.

The district eliminated a full-time campus aide position at the end of the 2016-17 school year when former aide Madgeolyn Wooten transferred out of

the school. Although it was not Wooten’s official position, she took on the role of a security guard and often times patrolled the courtyards to make sure people were being safe.

Instead, the school relies on patrolling staff to monitor the wellbeing of students. Beginning in Feb. 22, a campus aide, Alex Renderos, stands in front of the school from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m every Monday to Thursday. Renderos ensures students enter the school safely and mans the front desk for the next half hour once the bell rings before heading to Independence Continuation High School.

The school carries out random locker searches and random searches of students to maintain safety. Tips from JupiterEd’s hotline system are also used to respond to threats outside of school along with other issues that require attention such as bullying, drugs and students harming themselves. Teachers are recommended to leave their classroom doors closed during class as once shut, the doors are designed to automatically lock and cannot be opened from the outside without a key.

Another suggestion has been made

by President Donald Trump: to arm teachers in classrooms. However, many teachers at DPMHS feel that this would only make problems worse as any student can simply take a teacher’s gun and use it for their own means.

“What you’re literally asking a teacher to do is draw a gun and kill one of their students,” science teacher Stephen Schaffter said. “It’ll be something they carry with them for the rest of their life.”

If a student on campus was to be reported for possessing a firearm, Smith and Magnet Coordinator Nicole Bootel would report to the student’s class and search their belongings and locker. After reporting the issue to the district, school police may conduct further investigation. If

However, if the weapon were to be discharged, the school would enter lockdown.

During a lockdown, classroom doors stay shut, blinds are drawn and students are to remain silent. Students and teachers are told to not open doors during such situations because it’s impossible to tell whether or not the person on the other side is the shooter. Any students not in a class should try to get into a room nearest to them when the alert is issued.

During nutrition or lunch, most students are out in the courtyards, making it nearly impossible to rush everybody into classrooms. Despite the policies set in place at DPMHS and the district, an attack during this time would lead to fatal conse-

quences.

“It might actually mean that some kids might lose their lives trying to get into the building,” Smith said. “No kid should ever be put in that position.”

‘Live, Die, Repeat’ is the motto in Realm of the Mad God, a pixelated bullet hell massive multiplayer online (MMO) game first published in 2011 by Wild Shadow Studios.

“It’s all about the grind,” senior Nathan Moz said. “In the beginning of the game you grind for better equipment and if you die you lose everything, you have to start all over again.”

The game features a permadeath system, in which if the player character dies, the death is permanent and any items held by the character are gone.

Players are only able to play as a wizard at first, but are able to unlock more classes as they progress.

The game has changed hands multiple times since its release.

Originally created by Wild Shadow Studios and Spry Fox, Spry Fox sold their stake in the game when Wild Shadow Studios were acquired by Kabam. Kabam sold the game to Deca Games, the current owners, in 2016.

The game has attracted praise from critics for its simple gameplay mechanics, a feature not often found in MMOs. The game has drawn criticism for its control scheme, however, and when playing in the browser the player may encounter bugs that require the page to be reloaded.

One item that does persist between characters is the player’s pet, which provide passive bonuses to the player and can’t be damaged or killed.

Players can acquire items by buying them with gold or by killing an enemy that drops loot.

Rare items and potions to maximize player stats are dropped from dungeon bosses.

There are eight stats to max: attack, defense, speed, dexterity, wisdom, vitality, mana and health, the last two being the most difficult to max.

With the game’s quick-paced nature, players must adopt a form of shortened language to call out dungeons, loot and much more to ease communication through chat.

Realm of the Mad God is available on Steam, internet browsers and Kongregate.

It requires Flash Player to run.

With the invention of a new processor design, the Kirin 970, Huwaei Technologies Co., Ltd. was capable of turning a farfetched idea into reality.

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. is a Chinese networking and telecommunications equipment and services company.

The Kirin 970 processor, which is available in their newest phones, contains a neural processing unit (NPU) that can perform various tasks.

At the 2018 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Huawei presented the

Kirin 970 in a larger setting to show what it was capable of.

Huawei’s Mate 10 smartphone was linked to a Porsche Panamera and connected to a ski box on the roof of the car, which contained a camera and the NPU. The first test drive was around a parking lot where the equipment detected three obstacles. The second test drive had the car recognize an object and react to it.

Despite the successful tests, Huawei will not create self-driving cars. The presentation was only meant to display the NPU’s ability to interact with objects and identify items that it doesn’t recognize.

Given the challenge of going 24 hours without using any of the technological devices placed upon my shoulders, I was more than a little scared.

Normally, on a Saturday morning I get up incredibly early to start playing on my Playstation 4, but without being able to get on, I stayed in bed for an extra hour or so.

When I finally decided that I wanted to end my hibernation, I walked around my house for a while and pestered my family.

As soon as they got tired of me, they told me to go find something useful to do with my time.

After only a couple hours, I already felt that itch to turn on my phone, which compelled me to go outside and play basketball.

My family could tell that I was having a tough time sticking it out without technology, so they decided to take me out to lunch and buy a gift for a baby shower we were going to later.

Those were some of the most quiet car rides that I’d ever experienced since my sister usually blasts music and I told her to turn it off.

These activities were easily able to kill a couple of hours, and with evening approaching, I felt pretty confident.

I was so close yet so far away when we headed to the baby shower and my dad told me to put in directions to the house.

I reluctantly put in the directions, which meant that I cracked and didn’t complete the challenge. However, it didn’t discourage me as I still refused to use any tech for the rest of the day.

Going in, I felt like I wasn’t going to last even a few hours. However, I ended surprising myself and showed my parents that I do have some self-control.

This isn’t something I would like to do again because I missed out on too much, like not knowing how the Lakers game went. Personally, that isn’t something I can deal with.

I knew that I had relied on technology more than I probably should. I never realized how much I truly did until I tried to go 24 hours without it.

I began life unplugged on March 2 at 5 p.m. My goal was to make it 24 hours without technology, and I already knew that I would struggle.

When I put my phone down and told my family what I was doing, my brother, Peter, immediately offered me to play board games with him.

At the time I go to sleep, I’m usually on my phone, but I played games with my brother until we both fell asleep.

It was something I would have never done if I still had my phone. The first thing I do after waking up and getting ready is to check my notifications. I had to stop myself and immediately turned off my phone when I saw the screen light up.

When I got up, I noticed my mom was the only one who was awake, so I helped her make breakfast. It was relaxing to do something I usually do but with someone who means a lot to me with no distractions.

At hour 17, I became frustrated as my family began to use their phones. I kept myself from using it by taking up other hobbies I used to do such as knitting.

I would usually go on my phone and look at social media when I finished lunch.

Instead, I took out my guitar and began to practice some of my favorite songs.

It was around 2 p.m. when I felt I could no longer take it and I picked up my phone.

After I finished, I realized how much I depended on it to get in contact with people. It was a struggle for me because my phone is the only way I have to talk with a lot of my friends.

Even though I was not able to go 24 hours without my technology, I still feel as if I accomplished something. I was able to do so many more things than I ever did when I had technology.

SuperStar BTS challenges users to keep their fingers moving with its fast paced beats.

“SuperStar BTS is an app that I like because it keeps players entertained,” app user junior Mariana Sifuentes said.

“K-pop fans all over the world can collect cards of their favorite group members and have fun playing along to their favorite songs as well. Even non kpop fans have fun as it is a game that anyone can play.”

Inspired by the K-Pop group BTS, the South Korean app was created by Dalcom Software. Superstar BTS is a rhythm

game that allows players to compete with friends from around the world or those right next to you.

“I enjoy the app since I’m able to play my favorite songs and score higher than all my other friends who also play the game,” junior Emely Felix said. “The app has introduced me to new catchy songs.”

Cards of BTS members are also given at random times during the game, which players can level up to receive bonus points while playing.

“Future players should know that to get higher scores you need to power up your cards,” senior Paola Erazo said.

“Don’t neglect your cards.”

With levels ranging from easy to hard

and a song list updated monthly, players will never get bored.

While playing the game, users are able to jam out to BTS songs playing in the background.

To play, players must log in as a guest or sign in using their Google or Facebook account.

“Future players should know that they will need to change their Apple ID region into a Korean address because even though the app has an English version, it is not available here in the U.S.,” junior Pauline Miranda said.

New Mario Kart title to swerve onto mobile devices Samantha Freyre Staff Writer

Mario Kart fans will soon be able to enjoy racing away anywhere they go with the planned release of “Mario Kart Tour.”

There has not been much detail released on the new app, but it is set to be launched by March of 2019.

Over two million copies of Mario Kart 8 were sold in the U.S. and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 459,000. The success of these should make the release of Mario Kart Tour extremely popular and worth players’ money.

However, many are still on edge about the release of this app because they believe that Nintendo will not deliver this game on time.

Nintendo has repeatedly talked about releasing certain games. However, some of these games end up not making it to the App Store.

Q: What inspired you to play volleyball?

A: My sister Michal played volleyball and she convinced me to go to the tryouts, so I went.

Q: How long have you been playing volleyball?

A: Around two to three months now.

Q: How do you manage volleyball and school?

A: It’s hard. Having to have practice until five or six and then doing homework.

You get used to it after a while and get a handle on everything.

Q: What is the most challenging part about playing volleyball?

A: Not touching the net because with my position (outside hitter), I’m always at the net. So I just try to avoid touching the net.

Q: What struggles have you faced as a volleyball player?

A: In general you have to remember your rotations because if you’re not where you’re supposed to be, the other team can receive a point. Also positioning because depending on where the ball is and its angle, you need to be at a certain place.

Q: What is your favorite part about playing volleyball?

A: When I get to hit. When I get a good set and can hit.

“I won first place in all of my events,” varsity swimmer Petra Vass said. “For my 100 backstroke, my time was 1:08 and for my 200, my time was 2:25.”

On Feb. 22, the team competed against three schools: Taft Charter High School, Chaminade High School and Sherman Oaks Center For Enriched Studies High School. The meet was held at Birmingham

Community Charter High School. The team has practice everyday of the week to help the swimmers with their techniques.

“We usually swim during practice and we have two warm up sets and after that we have our main sets,” varsity swimmer Cj Gorospe said. “We usually swim over a mile or two a practice.”

This is Gorospe’s first time swimming competitively. He did not place this meet but he finished his 50 freestyle in 28 seconds which was a new record for him.

He believes there are a few things he can work on to help him improve.

“I’m not a strong kicker and swimmer when it comes to butterfly and breaststroke so I need to improve on that too,” Gorospe said.

Out of the 10 Daniel Pearl Magnet High School swimmers, both Gorospe and Vass believe that a few members of the team will be able to make it to finals this season.

“We have a lot of great and strong swimmers that are really fast,” Gorospe said.

Softball goes full swing into new season David Eskichyan Staff Writer

In an effort to recover from its last season, the girls softball team has prepared themselves for the new opportunities the upcoming season will bring.

“Last season was very bad personally for me because we weren’t that good because we lost seven of our seniors and so we had only two seniors last season and the season before,” varsity player Genevieve Avalos said. “This year we have some good incoming freshman that have to put a little spark to our varsity team.”

In order to achieve their goal to get more wins than the previous season, the Birmingham Community Charter High School varsity softball team has been actively training during after school practice, which goes from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm on a daily basis. The team’s practices generally consist of going to the weight room, or the team has personal training with travel teams outside of school. Practices also contain a lot of running, different drills and scrimmages with other teams.

“We’ve just been staying after practice like an hour or so and just putting in extra work,” sophomore Nattaly Villasenor said.

As opposed to last year, the Patriots hope for a more successful season. The

Last season, the girls had a final score of 11-17-1, with 11 wins, 17 losses and one tied game.

“I think we are well prepared,” Avalos said. “We have played together for a while now and we have played some scrimmages together so it’s always good to do that before season and make mistakes in preseason to get ready for season.”

The next game of the season is scheduled on March 13 and will be against La Canada. As the team continues preparing for the upcoming season, they have high hopes and expectations, in order to win more games than last season.

“We expect to go farther than last year,” Villasenor said. “Honestly, I think we will.”
