This year’s Get Lit team is taking poetry to a whole new level with a brand new team and all new poems.

Sophomores Stephanie Pynes, Adrienne Bangert, juniors Jason Echeverria and returning member Andie Mendoza will perform at this year’s annual Classic Slam on April 25. According to the poets, Get Lit allows them to express themselves to the world and is the perfect place for them to be.

“Get Lit allows us to perform in front a big audience, speak on a big issue that

is going on in the world and connect with people through poetry,” Pynes said.

The team practices every day at lunch and some days after school, working hard on reciting their poems. Throughout the practices, the team ensures that their performances include all the emotion that they can give.

“I love poetry,” Echeverria said. “It’s very similar to singing and songwriting.

Being a part of Get Lit is one of the best ways of expressing myself.”

Ninth and tenth-grade English teacher Ron Baer has participated in the Get Lit program for five years and loves it so far. He works with the poets and prepares

them for their big performance. Often, many people try out for a spot yet very few do as the team usually consists of four or five members.

Poets are evaluated through the amount of emotion and passion presented in their poetry as that’s what Get Lit is all about.

“Get Lit is really about helping students find their voices as a writer and as people themselves and it is really amazing,” Baer said.

Spring concert takes on after dark theme Sam Torres Staff Writer

Fans of L.A. nightlife can appreciate this year’s spring concert as its theme is L.A. After Dark.

This year’s spring concert will feature songs that reflect L.A. and Southern California.

The music is planned to have a romantic influence on them as well.

Some songs include “Summer Nights” from Grease and “Stay with Me” by Sam Smith.

Students will be able to watch the concert on May 2 during certain periods. On May 3, the show is scheduled to take place after school at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room.

Decorations are expected to be influenced by notable things in L.A. such as

the Hollywood Walk of Fame and skylines.

Decor as well is to include scenes from the San Fernando Valley.

“Last year’s show was about stars and starry night, but this one is more diverse,” senior bass player Brayan Herrera said.

This year’s theme brings a more narrow spectrum of song choices to correspond with the desired mood from the choir and band.

The band has also gained new members and are eager to present their skills to the audience.

“We have more singers and this will be their first show,” junior Andionne Mendoza said. “We have people who have never performed with us before so that’s nice.”

Birmingham Community Charter High School (BCCHS) girls lacrosse coach Scott Silva was set to appear in court on April 23 for a trial setting/resetting according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department inmate locator.

According to an email from Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office spokesman Frank Mateljan, Silva also had a trial set on April 12. His recent trial date was set and a jury was selected in the following weeks before, according to an an official close to the case.

According to the County of Los Angeles criminal case summary, Silva also had two docket line entry events, which is when the clerk reads out the register of actions that happened during the prosecution, on April 16. It is unknown what was decided during these events.

Silva is currently being held at the Men’s Central Jail in Van Nuys with bail posted at $595,000 according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department inmate locator.

Silva was arrested last year on Nov. 16 and currently has 30 charges of sexual misconduct against minors. A restraining order is currently filed against Silva to stay 100 yards away from Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, BCCHS and the 13 named victims.

Plan to protect a poisoned planet Bloated beached whales, suffocating black smog and plastic-littered streets are most often associated with nightmarish societies.

Following President Donald Trump’s 2017 withdrawal from the Paris Climate Deal, the general public has faced an ever-increasing series of natural disasters.

From the California wildfires in 2018 to the hurricanes hitting the Southeast and floods in Missouri, it feels like the end of the world is right around the corner.

As of 2018, the United States’ carbon dioxide emissions increased by approximately 3.4 percent, making it the largest jump in eight years, according to a study published by Rhodium Group. This same study revealed that the U.S. remains the greatest polluter since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the early 1820s, expelling an annual 5,414 metric tons of CO2, or 15 percent of greenhouse gasses emitted globally, through transpor-

tation, buildings and industry alone.

Its widespread effects range from ocean acidification, which will eventually lead to the extinction of many forms of marine life, to heat waves, which are to blame for sweltering summers that seem to only be getting hotter.

We believe that some of the most simple, straightforward solutions to curbing any further progression of pollution are enforcing laws that prevent corporations from relying solely upon fossil fuels or single-use plastics in the manufacturing process. Additionally, implementing Energy Democracy throughout American cities may also be in the best interests of the government, as the practice aims to locally source energy and drastically reduce carbon consumption.

Though it may be argued that several corporations with global influence like Google, Dell and Apple have already done their part by switching to renewable en-

ergy, few businesses in the food industry have dared to take similar actions. Specialty stores, restaurants and supermarkets are among one of the largest emitters of CO2, as the majority of products must either be flown in or imported from other states or even countries. A 2010 study conducted by the Kohala Center revealed that transportation alone accounts for nearly 18 percent of the embodied carbon emissions of vegetables. Without enforcing laws that limit corporations’ abilities to transport goods with vehicles that run off of fossil fuels, restoring the planet will be impossible.

We feel as though immediate government intervention is necessary. Otherwise, pollution will skyrocket, resulting in an uninhabitable planet with limited resources instead of the comfortable consumer-driven one Americans have become so accustomed to living in.

When news first broke out about “Operation Varsity Blues,” many students were furious to learn that wealthy families were bribing their child’s way into elite universities.

This college admissions scandal is unfair to those students who spent years studying to get the grades to get into these prestigious colleges.

About 50 people are accused of bribery, including well-known actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman. Loughlin is suspected of paying up to $500,000 for her two daughters to attend the University of Southern California. Other parents are accused of paying

others to take college-acceptance tests for their children to achieve top scores. Some of the prestigious campuses included in the scandal are Yale University, UCLA and

This whole college admissions scandal that was announced on March 12 when parents were arrested is angering as colleges are prioritizing students who come from wealth rather than those who don’t.

5 ways to prepare for upcoming AP exams Alliana Samonte Staff Writer

Advanced Placement (AP) exams can be a stressful time for every student.

Consider taking some of these free and resourceful ways to help you study for the upcoming tests. The tests will take place between May 6 through 17.

1. Getafive.com This website offers real tutors for AP Calculus AB, AP World History, AP U.S. History and AP Biology online. Below the courses are descriptions of each teacher, information on how long they have been teaching, where they have taught the course and a little bit of background. Each course provides a different number of video lessons and practice questions. To get started, click that you are a student and press the green “Get Started,” button to learn how to get a five on the AP tests.

2. Brainscape Brainscape is a free website and app which can help students study for their AP exams. Easily sign up with either a Facebook or email account to start creating flashcards. The website includes digital flashcards based on textbooks or practice exams.

3. KhanAcademy.com Khan Academy is another free online tutoring and educating website. It offers video lessons similar to a teacher instructing a lecture with visuals that display drawings and writings. Khan Academy offers tutoring through a variety of subjects, whether it be to help you prepare for the AP exam or any test.

4. AP Preparation Books: AP preparation books by Princeton Review are helpful books that guide the format of the AP exam. The book offers practice essay questions, multiple choice questions and practice exams.

5. On-campus tutoring: This year, Spanish teachers Glenda Hurtado and Marta Rodriguez are offering Spanish tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch for students taking the AP Spanish Language & Culture test.

Having teachers willing to teach students during their free time is an advantage to students who feel they may need more guidance in the class.

Online Editor-in-Chief Michael Chidbachian and Yearbook Design Editor Karina Mara celebrated the announcement that Chidbachian would be the class of 2019 valedictorian and Mara would be salutatorian.

“I wasn’t that shocked because in junior year, I was a semester ahead of most of the students, so I assumed I would be (valedictorian),” Chidbachian said.

Principal Deb Smith announced the highly-anticipated recipients in the Thursday morning announcements on March 28.

“It was difficult because my class, in particular, has a lot of talented and educated students in it,” Mara said.

With many activities apart from

school, both Chidbachian and Mara continued to set goals high in school.

“I know they were very involved in Daniel Pearl Magnet (High School),” journalism teacher Adriana Chavira said. “I’m hoping they get active in their campus because that just makes college way more fun.”

With a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) grade point average (GPA) of 4.35, Chidbachian is the vice president of National Honor Society and participated in a math research project at California State University, Northridge. He persists with his work with Board Member Scott Schmerelson’s Board District Three’s Student Advisory Board.

Mara is the treasurer for National Honor Society, plays on the Birmingham Community Charter High School’s varsi-

ty tennis team and volunteers for Rotary Thanksgiving Lunch-ins, the Northridge Library, is tennis court monitor, all with a LAUSD GPA of 4.3.

“There is definitely a lot of stuff going on outside of school,” Mara said. “I didn’t stop trying to do my best throughout the four years.”

Both of Chidbachian’s and Mara’s post-graduation plans aim to pursue mathematics. Chidbachian aspires to have a career in advanced mathematics, computer science or engineering.

Mara hopes to be an undergrad in applied mathematics or actuarial science, later transitioning to law. For the 2019 fall semester Chidbachian and Mara committed to the University of California, Los Angeles.

Baer nominated Teacher of the Year Christopher Sarenana Staff Writer

English teacher Ron Baer has been nominated for Teacher of the Year by the Encino Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m extremely honored to be nominated for this award,” Baer said.

The Encino Chamber of Commerce is an organization located in Tarzana whose mission is to promote and advance businesses and support networking among the community.

They also host a variety of community events such as Encino Chamber Bowling Tournament, Installation Gala and also the 25th annual Teacher of the Year Awards.

This will be Daniel Pearl Magnet High School’s fourth teacher to be nominated for this honor: Music teacher Jackie Gorski in 2013, English teacher Leah Pevar in 2017, journalism teacher and adviser for The Pearl Post and Prestige Yearbook Adriana Chavira in 2018 and now Baer in 2019.

“I feel very proud. I think it’s a very nice honor for our school and very nice recognition for Mr. Baer,” Deb Smith said.

Motivated by a love of gaming, Smash club aims to connect Daniel Pearl Magnet High School’s (DPMHS) gaming community with a fun and accepting environment.

“It feels welcoming,” sophomore Ian Ruelas said. “No one really judges you for going in and it’s fun, whether you’re playing or watching the rounds.”

Founded by juniors Logan Townsend and Mia Gracia two months ago, Smash club meets every Monday and Thursday in room 17 during lunch.

“We hope to have everyone feel welcomed to play,” Garcia said.

Members take turns playing the eight-player mode of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch.

Townsend was inspired by his friend to form the club and is the club president while junior Ryan Yourist is vice president.

“I love the game and I would play it with my friends at lunch,” Townsend said.

“One of them suggested that we should

form a club. That’s where it all stemmed from.”

Members are able to enjoy a variety of activities, from playing the game, watching others play and socializing with friends.

“I’m able to ease off,” Ruelas said.

“With so much going on and the shenanigans that happen, lunch just flies by.”

With this club, Townsend hopes to be able to unify the school through Super Smash Bros. “(We hope) to bring the school together with a shared love for one game,” Townsend said.

Staff writer Luna lands summer scholarships Isabelle Marin

With hopes of making it big in the journalism field one day, first-year The Pearl Post staff writer Itzel Luna has made a small step toward this goal upon winning the Jolene Combs Memorial Scholarship.

“I hope to gain experience and learn a lot,” said Luna, a sophomore. “Since I will be surrounded by students who are interested in journalism as well, I hope to learn from them and work with them.”

Luna received the scholarship by the Southern California Journalism Education Association (SCJEA) at the SCJEA state write-off at Long Beach City College on March 16. The reward for the scholarship is $500 toward a summer journalism workshop of her choice. She has also received a free scholarship for the USC Annenberg Youth Academy for Media and Civil Engagement. By taking these summer workshops, Luna hopes to bring new skills and ideas to the publication, possibly taking the paper in a whole new direction.

Under their pasta section on the menu, one can find some of the many pastas that are coated with creamy, flavorful sauces whether they be red or white sauce. From paninis served on fresh-baked baguettes to the filling pastas, most dishes cost $12.95.

They also offer various dessert options. One of their most popular is the banana Nutella croissant for $5.95 or the classic Italian Tiramisu for $6.95. il Tramezzino is the perfect place for everyone to enjoy either breakfast, lunch or dinner. With three locations, hours vary depending on the location. Information on their locations and hours can be found online.

“The (previous attendees of workshops) have brought new ideas and ways to handle the staff,” Chavira said.

Chavira has no involvement in the scholarship committee but by having past students be awarded this scholarship, she has seen how all of The Pearl Post has benefited. She hopes to provide all of her students with the best education possible so that they too can bring success to both the publication and themselves.

As part of the newspaper and yearbook staff, Luna writes a variety of stories for all sections, takes photos and works on videos. She was among the staff who provided daily coverage of the six-day teachers’ strike.

“Itzel is a very hardworking and dedicated student journalist,” Alondra Nuño said, The Pearl Post sports editor. “She’s always ready for a story assignment and is willing to help write a story.”

Singh becomes ‘Late Night’ TV show’s new face Casey Wanatick Staff Writer

Indian-Canadian YouTube star Lilly Singh is ready to take on the culture of late-night television. The 30-year-old queer YouTuber will be the first woman in over 30 years to host a late-night talk show.

Her show, “A Little Late with Lilly Singh,” will replace “Last Call with Carson Daly” in the 1:35 a.m. slot starting this fall on NBC. “I am so excited to be building this show from scratch,” Singh said in a video announcing her show. “I am so excited to make it diverse, to make segments about what I believe in. It’s gonna be sketch comedies, interviews, it’s going to be a wild ride.”

Singh, going under the moniker “IISuperwomanII” on YouTube, currently has over 14.5 million subscribers on her channel. She is one of the highest paid YouTubers earning a reported $10.5 million.

Her videos mainly address problems that young adults experience as well as real-world problems, like homophobia, through humorous and relatable skits.

She makes videos about her childhood in an Indian household by performing skits in which she acts like a caricature of her parents.

Singh has appeared in movies such as “Bad Moms” (2017), “Fahrenheit 451” (2018) and “F*&% the Prom” (2016). She has also published books including “How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life” and “Toxic Relationships: How to DE-TOX from Negative People and Abusive Relationships.”

American singer-songwriter Mikaela Straus, best known by her stage name King Princess, proves that all good things come with time with a new, complex approach to pop music.

Straus first made her big debut on the pop scene with sappy single “1950” under the category of indie-pop, in March of 2018. However, it wasn’t until former One Direction frontman Harry Styles tweeted out lyrics from the song, “I love it when we play 1950,” that her music gained clout around the country. After the Tweet gained traction, Straus released a fivetrack EP titled “Make My Bed.” She was shocked to have even been noticed by Styles and in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, stated that she was glad that Styles was encouraging youth to listen to more queer artists and that she herself didn’t have many gay celebrities to idolize in her youth. Soon after conducting the interview, the singer’s international tour commenced in November of 2018 in Australia, later spreading to New Zealand and Canada.

Straus grew up in New York frequently visiting her father, Oliver Straus, at his recording studio, Mission Sound. Growing up in the creative environment allowed her to develop a deep love and appreciation for the recording and producing of music at a young age.

She attributes this decision to producers’ tendencies to warp the originial sound of artists. Still, she says, her love of music remained constant.

After high school, Straus attended the USC Thornton School of Music for a year

before leaving to pursue her passion for music full time. She later signed a contract with British-born producer Mark Ronson, notable for his work with singers like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus, to be the first artist signed to Zelig Records, an imprint of Columbia Records.

What makes Straus stand out among today’s generic, oversaturated pop genre is her approach to combatting homphobia in the music industry through unapologetic, overtly queer lyric-writing.

In the unorthodox town of Uglyville, the strange and unconventional are praised and accepted. Moxy, voiced by pop singer Kelly Clarkson, and her friends venture into the town of Perfection where more suitable dolls are trained to be perfect and sent out to be loved by a child.

This animated musical stars the voices of artists like Nick Jonas, Pitbull, Janelle Monae and Blake Shelton. “UglyDolls,” rated PG, hits theaters May 3.

Directed by Deon Taylor, “The Intruder” tells the story of newlywed couple Scott, Michael Ealy, known for his work on the “Barbershop” series, and Annie Russell, Meagan Good, who buy their ideal home from recently widowed man. Charlie Peck, the house’s owner, is portrayed by “The Day After Tomorrow” star Dennis Quaid who still has an attachment to the house and an eerie obsession with Annie.

Rated PG-13, the chilling thriller hits theaters May 3.

In PG-13-rated “The Hustle,” “Les Misérables” star Anne Hathaway trains comedic Rebel Wilson, an amateur con artist, on how to scam like an expert. Together, the iconic female duo plot to take down a tech millionaire depicted by Netflix’s “To the Bone” star Alex Sharp. The film, directed by British-born Chris Addison, best known for his work on the controversial drama show “Skins,” is set to be released May 10.

Community takes action to save the environment Alexis Gutierrez

Taking care of the environment has been an ongoing process with no end in sight and Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS) and local businesses continue to make an effort to preserve the Earth.

Los Angeles County and DPMHS have various recycling bins placed in convenient locations to make them easily accessible for individuals to encourage them to not litter. However, despite having the resources to make environmentally friendly decisions, littering continues to be an issue.

“I think students can make sure that the recycling materials get in the right bin and being conscious about how much paper they are using, ” Principal Deb Smith said. “Are they wasting paper, tissue or paper towels? I think all of those things can help keep the environment better.”

DPMHS has recycling bins placed around the school for student use and teachers have boxes in their classrooms specifically for empty water bottles. By having these available to the students, the school is encouraging them to toss their trash into the correct bin.

However, students still tend to place bottles in the wrong bin and since the trash is not sorted often, it does not get recycled. Leadership used to collect the bottles from the bins but with no one available to take the bottles to a recycling plant, this no longer happens. As of now, the plastic bottles are just placed in the large bin outside which is taken by the city to be recycled.

Microplastic raising concern for safety of oceans Isabelle Marin

Many people go on living their lives and don’t stop to think about the consequences their consumption of single-use plastics create.

It is presumed that every inch of the ocean has been contaminated by microplastics. Microplastics are small pieces of plastic that can be found in any ecosystem in the environment. This does not bode well for the marine life nor those that consume them. When marine animals consume microplastics, they are damaging their bodies in ways unimaginable. The entire food chain turns into a domino effect of the disaster.

According to National Geographic, 114 aquatic species have been found with some form of microplastic contamination.

Of those 114 species, half of them are regularly consumed by humans. These microplastics do not simply exit the bodies of those who consume them, they enter the bloodstream. The toxins from these plastics are passed on to those who consume them, that goes for other animals along with humans. Single-use plastics are more convenient for most people but they are destroying the quality of the Earth and the life on it. There is no reason that living creatures should have to suffer, especially not for the carelessness of humans. Even if it is just for the conveniences, the effects of microplastic contamination are irreversible. The lives of humans are also at stake.

into effect on Jan. 1 in California allows restaurants to serve straws as long as the customers ask for them. This only applies to full-service dining establishments according to CNBC News.

There are very many alternatives to single-use plastics and many options for plastic straws. There are reusable stainless steel straws and thick plastic straws that

can be reused time and time again. Reusable cups are also widely available for people who don’t mind taking the extra step.

Although these things may not always be the most convenient, they will all help to slowly improve the quality of our aquatic species, and along with that comes our food.

In recent years, the fast increase of global carbon emissions and pollution are having far-reaching consequences on the environment, such as global warming. Not enough is being done as governments and corporations refuse to take action to combat these severe effects.

The damages from carbon emissions are evident today and for the past decade.

The rate at which hurricanes are increasing around the world is far more frequent.

The amount of precipitation is fluctuating, with northern areas receiving more than the south where droughts are now frequent. Ice in the Arctic is melting fast and with it, sea levels are rising.

In California alone, these effects are more prominent considering the diversity of the region.

From 2012 to 2016, the state was caught in a long-lasting drought. These droughts contributed to the influx of wildfires ravaging both the land and vegetation, affecting the state’s incredibly diverse ecosystem.

tus by 2045, the only other state to do so is Hawaii. Additionally, he entered California in the United States Climate Alliance, alongside several other states and cities within the country such as New York and Washington.

When President Donald Trump took action to leave the Paris Accord, California rightfully stepped up to better manage the

effects on the environment.

Most solar energy systems in the country are located in California and the state should be seen as a model for the rest of the country.

Being more environmentally conscious isn’t a rare concept. Many places are already being powered by renewable energy, including Aspen, Colorado, and Burlington, Vermont.

However, the actions the state of California and these few cities are taking aren’t enough to combat the effects of climate change unless they are applied to every city, state and country immediately.

Alternatives include reducing plastic disposal through more efficient waste management, cutting down carbon gas emissions by using the renewable energy sources available and imposing more regulations on industries to encourage the use of plastic alternatives and environmentally friendly production processes.

More funding should be devoted to scientific research that works on finding more alternatives and actual solutions.

Not every solution currently exists but the preventative measures and alternatives that do exist need to be enforced.

New activities to debut at Pearl Con

After its success in uniting a community devoted to comics and cosplay, Pearl Con resumes for its fourth consecutive year.

The convention takes place on May 11 this year and serves to bring together various forms of entertainment into one big event for all to enjoy. Pearl Con was created by teachers James Morrison and Stephen Schaffter in order to create an identity and bolster spirit for students at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School.

“The experience of having done it means that we know that certain things have to occur at a certain time,” Schaffter said. “We’re really good at figuring out our timelines a lot better than we were in the past.”

Just like last year, there will be a vintage car show but a new feature this year will be an exhibition displaying min-

iature, hand-painted car models. In the Multi-Purpose Room, vendor booths will be set up to browse and buy graphic novels, art, figurines and other collectibles.

The Los Angeles Public Library will be hosting their own booth for the first time this year. As always, guests are encouraged to cosplay as their favorite characters and get into the spirit.

“It’s not just artists,” Morrison said.

“It’s a community effort.”

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the opening of Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, the theme of the convention will be based on World War II. It serves to commemorate how the school building is one of the last facilities of a military hospital in use during WWII. There will be reenactors playing the roles of injured soldiers and field medics. Additionally, a small museum will be set up to showcase relics and other items that capture how the school once looked.

“It’s going to be not necessarily a history theme but it’s going to be more of a nostalgia sort of theme for 75 years ago, for the golden age in comics,” Schaffter said.

Instead of a Maid Cafe, where guests were able to buy food and refreshments, there will be a 50’s retro cafe. Volunteers working there will all follow a vintage style, adding to the nostalgia.

This year, Morrison and Schaffter have decided to partner with the Associated Student Body, rather than just the Parent Teacher Student Association. Funds will be primarily earned through the sales of tickets and refreshments, and then reinvested back for the school to use.

Volunteers are encouraged to help out during the event, such as in the cafe or in hospitality.

“In essence, what we’re doing is we’re throwing a party for the students,” Schaffter said.

2. Art Director from “Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse” He will talk about working as a graphic designer for movies.

3. Fire and Dice A board game company that will be giving away some of their games.

4. Jimmy Weldon A former World War II veteran who was also the voice of the main character in the cartoon series “Webster Webfoot” will be discussing his time working for the cartoon.

5. World War II Jeeps They will be featured at the auto show.

6. Franky Ortega He will set up an exhibit of the old Birmingham General Hospital.

7. Ghostbusters cosplayers They will bring in Ghostbusters memorabilia and act as the Ghostbusters.

8. Hula group will be offering hula classes.

9. A Golden State Warriors basket will be up for auction.

10. USC memorabilia will be up for auction.

11. Los Angeles Kings tickets will be up for auction.

12. A Spider Man poster donated by an artist will be up for auction.

Felix says goodbye to Maid Cafe Mahali Sanchez Staff Writer

After being an all-century era Maid Cafe waitress for almost three years, senior Emely Felix says goodbye to her maid costume.

Felix has been dressing up as a maid and serving food every year at Pearl-Con since it started three years ago. She began volunteering when science teacher James Morrison announced that maid cafe would be a part of Pearl-Con. “Mr. Morrison got me really into volunteering for the maid cafe my freshman

year,” Felix said. “Since I was really into anime, it was also interesting.”

After deciding to volunteer at PearlCon, Felix gained a much higher position in the maid cafe. She was given the opportunity to run and organize how the food would be served. She even inspired her friend to volunteer with her after doing it for one year and seeing how fun it was.

“I first started volunteering as something else in Pearl- Con,” senior Grantas Javzebices said. “But I saw how interesting and fun it was to dress up for maid cafe so I joined.”

Science teacher Stephen Schaffter is still amazed at how well Felix did with maid cafe. He also believes that she will do great wonders with the new 50’s diner theme this year at Pearl-Con to go along with the World War ll theme.

“I’m so amazed of what Emily has done,” Schaffter said. “I believe that she’ll do amazing things this year as the last years where she had done a tremendous amount.”

“Attack on Titan” takes anime to a new level Geraldine Marie

“Shingeki No Kyojin” or “Attack On Titan” is an anime popular for its magnificent depiction of humans trying to fight against giants.

If you enjoy action-packed adventures with a side of blood, then this anime will pique your interest. It has you leaning on the edge of your seat, having the urge to click another episode. Let’s hope you’re not squeamish with a bit of gore.

The anime “Attack On Titan” has three seasons and first aired in April 7, 2013. Season three will have a second part that will be released on April 28 and can be viewed on streaming apps such as Crunchyroll, Funimation, VRV and more.

The narrator starts off every episode with a quote that describes context for the show.

“That day, the human race remembered the terror of being dominated by them and the shame of being held captive in a bird cage…”

Each 24-minute episode follows the aftermath of humanity gaining a predator

called the Suniga Titans. They are giant humanoid creatures that are mindless. Their role is to devour and prey on humans. This dangerous predator brought humanity on a brink of extinction which leads survivors to construct three concentric walls, Wall Maria, Wall Rose and Wall Sina. This solution allowed humanity to obtain peace.

This peace was disrupted when an unusual and larger Titan breached Wall Maria. This breach gave all Titans access to invade human territory. Survivors were forced to evacuate to the inner walls.

As a young boy, Eren Yeager witnessed this fatal event and a burning passion to eradicate the Titans from their existence ensued. To get revenge, he joined the military.

“Attack On Titan” was first created as a manga, a Japanese version of a comic by Hajime Isayama in Sept 9, 2009 with 28 volumes in total. The books still run.

The anime television series is directed by Tetsurō Araki and Masashi Koizuka.

All of the animation is produced by Wit Studio and was founded in 2013. This anime series is the only famous work Araki and Koizuka have made, including Isaya-

They also created multiple spin offs and Original Animation Videos (OVA’s).

Some of their OVA’s include “Junior High”, “No Regrets” and “Lost Girls”.

“Attack on Titan,” is extremely addictive and guaranteed to leave the viewer on the edge of their seat.

Defend Washington D.C. in “The Division” Evan Gleason

Ubisoft, who is the publisher of some of the most popular games such as the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series and ‘For Honor,’ is releasing ‘Tom Clancy’s Division 2’. Will it be a blockbuster or just another terrible Ubisoft game?

This game resembles other third person shooters such as in ‘Fortnite’ and ‘ Marvel’s Spider-Man’. in the sense that has an open world storyline. But, will there be problems with the game like many other Ubisoft games?

The game starts out with you picking out what your character will look like. Your options are either a male or female with an exceptionally large amount of choices to match how you want your character to look. Once you are done making your character, you rush outside and start to learn the basic moves on how to be an agent of the division.

You’re set to be a last line of defense in Washington D.C where your journey begins with your base of operations at the White House. This is where you will prepare to defend innocent lives from the

villainous group called the Hyenas. These people decided to prey on the weak to survive instead of uniting together. Your job is to find these people and, if they have done anything bad to innocent lives, to deal with them.

Some of the problems with the game is that if you get confused about where to go it’s difficult to find the correct way because the instructions are written in such a small font. The controls differ from other shooter games as well. Usually the vault button is X for PS4, but in this case it’s O. There are some other problems with the

game such as how the response time for the character switching from one wall to the next is slow which could lead to you being shot more by enemies.

‘Tom Clancy’s Division 2’ is a fun game to play as long as you surpass the obscure controls and the irritating marks that direct your character. You shouldn’t buy this game unless you can get a deal on it for 40 dollars or have some friends to play it with. Despite its flaws, the game is entertaining gets the player excited to defend Washington D.C

Jump into the explosive battlefield in Borderlands 3 Adam Garcia Contributing Writer

Borderlands 3 has taken the media by storm, with Borderlands 1 and 2 exceeding expectations.

Borderlands 3’s developers Gearbox Software and Aspyr have decided to partner with Epic Games. This move was very unexpected because Borderlands 1 and 2 released through Steam. Steam is now going to sell Borderlands 3 six months after Epic Games is set to release it.

Borderlands is an open-world action role-playing first-person shooter. The first Borderlands was released in 2009. The second Borderlands was released in 2012.

Borderlands 3 is going to be released on September 13, 2019.

Fans of the previous Borderlands games will appreciate Borderlands 3 if they enjoyed the first two. The storyline is amazing with an insane amount of influence from the other Borderlands games like the Pre-Sequel and Tales from the Borderlands.

If you love action-packed video games then you will love Borderlands 3.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ to end phase three of MCU Steven Guzman New Media Editor-in-Chief

As half of the universe was wiped with the snap, known as the Decimation, the conclusion of the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) finishes with “Avengers: Endgame,” releasing on April 26.

After the mad titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) succeeded in bringing his idea of balance to the universe in “Avengers: Infinity War,” the remaining Avengers must come together and defeat him once and for all. The story will pick up right where it left off as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) are adrift in space with limited food and oxygen after leaving the planet Titan.

Other surviving heroes include Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson).

Heroes who did not appear in the previous Avengers film but arrive for this installment include Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and newly introduced Captain Marvel (Brie Larson).

Captain Marvel, who recently starred in her own solo film, was referenced in the end credits scene of “Infinity War” after Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) contacted her through the pager before he disappeared. Ant-Man was last seen in “AntMan and the Wasp” when he got stuck in the Quantum Realm after Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Hope Pym (Evangeline Lilly) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) were wiped out of existence.

It has been speculated by fans that the Avengers will travel back in time through the Quantum Realm to prevent the events that lead to Thanos’ success.

This idea is furthered by leaked set photos of Evans in the Captain America suit that was worn in the first “Avengers” film. The use of the Quantum Realm was seen in “Ant-Man and the Wasp” when Hank Pym traveled into it to rescue Janet Van Dyne.

With a new mission comes new looks.

Trailers have shown the heroes in new white suits with an almost identical appearance to the one Pym previously used.

from his previous full-grown beard, Black Widow returns to her iconic red hair and Hawkeye takes a dark appearance, leading to believe he will be taking the mantle of “Ronin,” his comic-book counterpart. Iron Man and War Machine dawn new armor and Rocket appears in a more comic-accurate suit. Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is believed to take up the “Rescue” armor after an image surfaced on the internet of Paltrow in a new purple suit.

Widow and Hawkeye. Previous directors of “Avengers: Infinity War,” Joe and Anthony Russo, will also be directing “Endgame.”

It will be the longest Marvel film with a runtime of three hours and two minutes.

With “Avengers: Endgame” closing the first three phases of the MCU, now known as “The Infinity Saga,” the burning questions of how Stark and Nebula are saved from space, how Ant-Man got out of the Quantum Realm, how the Avengers will put a stop to Thanos and who will fall in the final battle will finally be answered.

At five feet five inches, Om Patel makes a truly commendable impact on the Birmingham Community Charter High School boys varsity volleyball.

Volleyball is in his blood as he comes from a family of volleyball players.

“All my cousins, uncle and sister played volleyball,” Patel said. “ When we would go somewhere we’d bring a volleyball and start peppering.”

Patel has been playing volleyball for five years, starting in the sixth grade.

Patel’s position on the team is Libero, who’s a key part on defense for the top row. His job is to pass the ball to the setter when the other team serves the ball and diving or getting up balls when the opponent hits the ball. They’re usually the best passer on the team.

Being on varsity hasn’t been a walk in the park for him. The workload and competition is a lot tougher since you have more experienced players playing.

“With varsity, it’s harder work,” Patel said. “We usually get out of practice at 5 p.m and train every Tuesday and Thursday.”

Lady Patriots swing into action Tylin Jarrett Staff Writer

Birmingham Community Charter High School has been known for having a successful sports program over the past decade and their varsity softball team looks to continue the trend “We plan on getting more wellearned wins this season,” senior and varsity outfielder Genevieve Avalos said. “We are a better and smarter team than last year. We have more power with hitting and our defense is pretty solid.”

This season, the Lady Patriots hold a league record of 1-3 and an overall record of 7-2, which is a huge improvement from last season. They have a key element that most teams in the valley do not possess, which is having seasoned veterans on the

team that has been through the rigors and struggles of the entire softball season before. These players, such as Avalos, have the ability to help the younger players on the team, especially when it comes time for city and state playoffs.

Along with improving drastically as a team, each player on this team has worked hard to improve individually in hopes of achieving a city championship this season.

Avalos, for example, has worked on and improved multiple skills she knows could help herself and her team this season.

“This year, I am focusing on hitting away on the left side rather than slapping,” Avalos said. “I have become versatile with both slapping and hitting away, and I plan to use those skills more often this season.”

Avalos also said that her teammates have improved and gained a tremendous

amount of skill and confidence this season.

“A lot of my teammates have improved their hitting to near perfection,” Avalos said.

Despite their abundance of seniors, there are also some younger players like freshman and varsity pitcher, first baseman, and outfielder Emily Flores that have proven that they can step up and help this team win. Flores has played well and learned a significant amount from seniors such as Avalos.

“I have improved this year by being smart,” Flores said. “I also improved by communicating with the older girls on how to play high school ball and look for areas where I could do better since I’m the only freshman on the team.”

With a new coach on the team, the Lady Patriots are working tirelessly to improve their game with new drills for the season.

Brittany Susnow, the team’s new head coach, brought new drills that have been put to practice and and have benefitted the teams performance.

The previous season showed a small lack of communication that the team is now working on improving. The team has an overall record of 8-6 and league record of 5-1. Along with communication, the team’s defense is a focus on improvement as well.

be done there,” junior and varsity player Maria Ruiz said. “Just talking to each other and making sure someone’s on the ball or someones covering other people’s zones and making sure that no attacker can get through and shoot.”

In the previous season, the drills seemed irrelevant and did not help the team’s performance as much as they needed. The new drills ran by Susnow however, are paying off and are aiding the teams dynamic and gameplay. They are determined to improve their game throughout the season as playoffs start on April 24.

“I see my team going into being better people from these experiences and working together,” junior and junior varsity player Karen Ticas said. “New skills are being built so overall we’re going to be good.”

Patriots have CIF goals once again Maria Ruiz

Frustration coursed through the Birmingham Community Charter High School Patriots varsity baseball team when they were pitted against the Cleveland Charter High School Cavaliers .

Their defense was lacking and their batting was faulty but the Patriots hoped for a miracle. In the end, the Patriots lost 2-7.

“It was just minor mistakes made by the defense,” freshman and varsity pitcher Chris Romero said. “We’re taking practices more seriously and hopefully everything will click for the rest of the season.”

Last season, the Patriots held a 26-

10 overall and a 6-4 league standing. They beat El Camino Real High School in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championship with a score of 3-4. This year the Patriots plan to do it again.

“The goal is to get back into the open division playoffs and make a run,” coach Matt Mowry said. “We want to make it and win the whole thing. We have to do what we’re capable of doing and everything will take care of itself.”

The Patriots aim to get as many wins as possible to have the best league standing in their division and get a higher ranking in playoffs.

With how well the Patriots did last season, not too much has changed in the Patriots’ training. They head out to the

field every day from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. to work on fundamentals such as ground balls and batting. They review signs and work to reinforce their defense. This season they have worked consistently with a trainer to truly enhance their skills. “(The trainer) helps strengthen us and helps our conditioning,” junior and third baseman Joshua Fleisher said. “It adds a competitive edge.”

Despite a 0-2 league record and an overall 10-9 record, the Patriots hold high expectations for their upcoming season.

“Our team is pretty stacked,” Romero said. “Our pitching is good. Our hitting is decent so I’m pretty confident.”

Serrano has championship ring in mind Tylin Jarrett

After watching his older brother play volleyball and having fun with his team, junior Antonio Serrano knew what sport he wanted to play in high school.

“I started to play because of my brother,” Serrano said. “When I was in eighth grade, I watched his games and thought the sport was really cool. I started playing the following year.”

Serrano has played volleyball throughout his entire high school career for Birmingham Community Charter High School, playing JV as a freshman and starting on varsity as a middle blocker these last two years. Last year, the Patriots varsity volleyball team did not find much success. This year, Serrano aims to change that.

“I’ve started watching volleyball videos and doing personal training on my offdays to get better at the game and help us be a successful volleyball team,” Serrano explained.

Serrano has has a big impact on the game when he is playing, which is most of the game. Stats such as blocks and kills per game are not usually recorded or put on MaxPreps for high school volleyball, but the team statistically does better when he

is on the court.

When he was asked about his goals for this season, he was very straightforward and to the point.

“My main goal for this season is to get a ring,” he said. “I want to win a championship. It’s always been a goal I’ve had.”

Head coach LeAnne Bennett-Riley had some praise for the standout junior, as well.

“Antonio has always been really coachable, which makes my job a lot easier,” Bennett- Riley said. “He’s been listening a lot better to what I’ve been telling him to do and has learned how to make in-game adjustments sooner rather than later.”

Serrano has proved that he can produce for his team, and has started both his sophomore and junior years on varsity.

He also loves the game with a passion and wants to keep playing for as long as he can.

“I just love the game,” Serrano said.

“If I get a scholarship, I will definitely take it and play in college. If not, then we’ll see.

But for now, I’m just going to play volleyball and enjoy it.”

Entering track season 19 with harder workouts and pressure, senior Judith Ntere expects progressive improvement as she finishes her last year.

Ntere long jumps and races for Birmingham Community Charter High School’s junior varsity track team.

“Keeping up with the athletes who have been training since they were five [is hard],” Ntere said.

So far, she’s competed at Chatsworth Charter High School and El Camino Real Charter High School (ECRCHS). At ECRHS, she jumped her personal record of 13’1 and was the second leg in the junior varsity 4x1 relay.

Different from her eighth-grade track team, Ntere runs alongside teammates who challenge her to run faster.

With training on grass for the majority of the season, Ntere only has one day a week to work on her sprints until Thursday competition days.

“It feels weird,” Ntere said. “I feel like it slows me down.”

Nterre plans to continue running track at California State University Northridge.

As a senior, Ntere learns valuable lessons to bring into college to stay on top of school work.

“Track teaches me to manage my time with school [and] stay organized with my work,” Ntere said. “Before joining track I wasn’t organized with my work. [Now] I don’t procrastinate as much as I used to.”

Learn how to signal, park and brake by downloading “Driving School 3D.” Developed by Nullapp, this free app allows those who are close to receiving their permit or driver’s license to practice all the basic rules of the road.

There are various modes to play in this game, such as career mode, free drive and multiplayer. In career mode the player has to follow all of the instructions and the path the driver needs to take. To pass the levels of driving make sure to fasten your seatbelt, turn the blinkers on and stop when needed. If one of the instructions were not followed, the player will lose a star. There is a total of three stars which determine how well the player drove.

Free drive is very similar to career mode except for the fact that there are no instructions. The player is allowed to practice turning, use their breaks and how to park without any rules.

To play with friends, multiplayer mode is the way to go.

The app is available on Apple, Android and Microsoft devices. So, prepare for the test, fasten your seatbelt and try not to lose any stars.

NetherRealm Studios is set to release the 11th installment of their fighting series, Mortal Kombat available everywhere on April 23 for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.

This game will pick up from where “Mortal Kombat X” left off and will continue to move the continuous story forward with an emphasis on time travel. Characters will meet different versions of themselves and will face consequences for time manipulation.

New gameplay features are being added such as the Fatal Blow, Krushing Blow and Flawless Block mechanic. Fatal Blow is a special move that can be per-

formed once during a match when your health drops under 30 percent and does a lot of damage. Krushing Blow is the special cinematic variation of a special move and is triggered when completing certain requirements for the move. The Flawless Block mechanic is a short period of time where you can counter an attack with precise timing after blocking a move.

Familiar faces like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage and Raiden are returning to the game. The two new characters being added to this game, are Kronika and Geras.

Kronita will play a huge role in the story line as the main antagonist who’s been developing since the first Mortal Kombat Game. Geras is a follower of Kronika and is able to control time, change the round

timer and restore health during each fight.

Professional fighters Ronda Rousey and John Cena will be a part of the game as well. Rousey will be voice actor for longtime character Sonya Blade and Cena is speculated to voice Stryker.

When pre-ordering the game you unlock the character, Shao Khan. There will also be two editions of the game, Premium and Kollector’s. The Premium Edition comes with six DLC characters, which can be unlocked one week early, seven skins and new gear sets. The Kollector’s Edition comes with everything from the Premium Edition but with a magnet, life-size Scorpion mask and collector’s box which is a GameStop exclusive.
