Low enrollment causes large classes, less money Cristina Jercan

Larger class size. No new technology. These are the dire consequences of the school’s low enrollment.

“There are several effects that the school is facing because of the low enrollment,” Principal Deb Smith said.

Because of DPMHS’ low enrollment of 355 students, the school is at risk of many negative changes. It’s possible to lose a teacher due to a lack of funding.

The school’s funding for the following year will be lower, specifically the categorical fund. This fund contains the money received from Title 1, a federal funding source.

“With cuts in this, it limits our ability to purchase new technology, to go on field trips and just the general taking care of supplies and things that teachers need,” Smith said.

All staffing is done based on the number of students the school has. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, two teachers left the staff. Math teacher Tom Wild left in order to seek out a full-time job.

Spanish and dance teacher Magaly Orejarena was displaced since the enrollment numbers were not met to have two Spanish teachers. Spanish teacher Glenda Hurtado was kept due to her seniority.

Music teacher Wes Hambright was brought back to staff this school year because students need the music class offered in order to fulfill the visual and performing arts A-G graduation requirement.

These are requirements students need to meet in order to receive their high school diplomas.

Norm day, which fell on Sept. 16, is a day when the district sets to capture the student enrollment of a school. Schools report back to the Los Angeles Unified School District with the number of students that are currently enrolled. This number determines how many teachers the school qualifies for.

“On that day, all schools will have a certain number and that’s the number that they use when assigning or cutting staff,” Bootel said.

The budget had been set to add a teacher to the staff, avoiding the loss of

another teacher for this school year. There is still the possibility of a loss in staff for the next school year if there is not enough money to support all teachers.

“We are increasing our publicity efforts to try to make sure that we get a lot more student enrollment,” Smith said.

As a way to try to recruit new students, Bootel is taking current students to different middle schools during the eChoices window, when middle school students apply for the magnet high school of their choice. There, they will talk to middle school students and have presentations about the various advantages of being a DPMHS student.

“They’ll go to encourage the students

in other schools that don’t typically choose to come here, to get them excited about maybe wanting to come here,” Smith said.

Smith has contacted the Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council for help in advertising the school. They have agreed to try to work with a caravan of real estate agents, according to Smith. When people look to buy homes in this area, DPMHS will be mentioned as another school for their children to attend.

“We are continuing to communicate all the great things that go on at Daniel Pearl,” Bootel said.

Student expression welcomed Later start for next school year to help reduce costs April Serrano

In spirit of the new school year, confusion has concerned students around over locker decoration policies.

Students believed that they are not permitted to decorate their lockers this year. A new policy from Principal Deb Smith states that stickers with adhesive that can leave a residue on the lockers are not permitted. However, tape and other forms of decorations are allowed.

“Students are permitted to add decorations to their lockers just not ones that will leave residue on the lockers,” Smith said.

In the past, students decorated their lockers as a form of creativity and individuality. Many decorations and layouts included favorite bands, celebrities and television show characters.

On special occasions, friends decorated another’s locker for a birthday or special event. This was the students’ way of expression and showing their creative side or just their personality.

“I like having locker decorations because it shows a student’s creativity,” senior Erica Mallari said.

The next two school years for students of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are scheduled to be set back a week in order to start the first semester after Labor Day. On Sept. 20, LAUSD board members decided that school will begin on Aug. 22, 2017. This is for a slow but eventual pushback to change the return to school to after Labor Day and as a consequence it will cut Thanksgiving break by three days and winter break down by a week.

There were three district board members who supported the late start proposal. As of the vote, the majority won with five to two in favor of the schedule change.

The most popular reason for the schedule change is air conditioning costs, with reports indicating that there would be a substantial amount of money saved

for the pushback to be worthwhile if students were to start school in September and get out in late June. In the hot California heat, a lot of money can be saved according to the Early Start Analysis HVAC Service Call Data 2010-2015.

As the second largest school district in the nation, LAUSD had a lot to account for and air conditioning was only part of the major decision that is going to affect roughly 640,000 students as well as many teachers and staff. The scheduling of winter midterms, advanced placement testing and summer programs were also considered in the decision. Overall, these factors that did get the vote for the first change in 2012 in favor of an early start were outweighed this time around by the late start.

School board member Scott Schmerelson did not comment on the schedule change when called on Oct. 5 and 13.

Virtual Reality promises a new future for gaming Liliya Miroshnychenko

With new virtual reality gaming devices being invented, the gaming community is bound to see changes.

Popular gaming icons like YouTubers Pewdiepie and Markiplier gained a lot of attention toward virtual reality devices, mainly high-end devices like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

However, these new devices only cater to a small market. The Oculus Rift headset is sold at $699, and the HTC Vive at $799. Many gamers can not afford such a luxury. The PlayStation VR, released on Oct. 13, has a more reasonable price of $399. This headset is to be coupled with Sony’s PlayStation 4. The headset will allow players to immerse themselves into their previously bought games.

Besides the device prices barring many from experiencing VR gaming, there are also health and safety risks to the 3-D headset.

Hang out with someone new at lunch with the help of Sit With Us, a new app that helps students make new friends.

Natalie Hampton, a 16-year-old student in Sherman Oaks, California, created Sit With Us after years of being bullied. After knowing that she wasn’t the only one who’s had to face harassment was the reason why she felt this app was necessary.

With the app, students can volunteer as ambassadors and post open lunches which sends a notification to people looking for a place to sit. Locations, like “the lunch table” or a specific room number, can be inputted to help students find the event.

Once in the app, students can upload photos, add descriptions of events, add dates and times and message friends. In order to find friends with similar interests, stu-

Electronic Arts releases the 14th installment of the popular “Battlefield” series, “Battlefield 1” for the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Microsoft Windows on Oct. 21.

The setting of the game is set during World War 1 and players are able to use weapons such as the automatic and semi-automatic rifles, bayonets and flamethrowers. The player will also be able to use a wide variety of vehicles such as heavy tanks, armored trucks, airplanes and even be able to ride horses. New maps will be based on locations around the world, some of these include Arabia, The Western Front and The Alps.

The game will include new classes, each one with different weapons and different uses. Some of these new classes include: Assault, the primary anti-vehicle class who uses shotguns; Medic, which is focused on reviving teammates and healing, who use semi-automatic

rifles; Scout, this class focuses on spotting enemies and firing with their sniper rifles.

To make sure that no bugs or glitches would be found prior to the game’s release, the open beta was released first on Aug.31 and ended at Sept. 8.

“I hope the content will be good,” said sophomore Henry Voelker “I’m really excited for air superiority.”

A single player story mode will be added, so when players can’t play online they can play story mode. Online multiplayer can have up to 64 players each match and mode. These new modes include: Conquest, Domination, Operations and Rush. So far Battlefield fans have been pleased with the new gameplay. “Battlefield 1” is $59.99 on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.

“There’s going to be a lot of maps and operations,” Voelker said,“ It’s going to be great.”

Boney Island makes annual return Alice Curran

The air fills with Halloween magic and children’s laughter as people of all ages approach Boney Island.

For the last two weeks in October, one front yard in Sherman Oaks is transformed into a magical display of family-friendly Halloween attractions.

Boney Island was created in 1998 by American producer and author Rick Polizzi. Polizzi created the book “Spin Again,” an illustrated collection of board games from the 1950s and 60s. He also received a Primetime Emmy Award for his work as an animator producer on the series, The Simpsons.

Meet the Staff:

Polizzi’s background in animation and his desire for a Halloween event that wouldn’t be too frightening for his young daughters led to the creation of Boney Island.

Boney Island has become more popular every year. Over 25,000 visitors attend each year to see the various activities. Polizzi and the Boney Island team spend three months preparing and roughly $5,000 to host the event, yet admission is free.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the comedic animatronic Maestro Maxilla the Great, a skeleton magician who hosts a musical cauldron show with a choreographed water and light performance.

Behind this larger-than-life display

is a 4-story tree house, which guests can visit and see Boney Island from above. In past years, celebrities like Halle Berry, Julie Bowen and Dave Grohl have been spotted at this event.

As guests make their way through the yard, they will encounter animated skeletons hanging from trees, hiding in bushes and dancing on the roof. All the while, telling jokes and doing magic tricks.

Toward the end of the attractions, guests can buy baked goods, hot chocolate and souvenirs from Boney Islands’ Boo-tique.

Each year, the National Potato Council awards one student a scholarship worth $10,000. The student must conduct research that benefits the potato industry on topics such as trade, environment, regulations and legislation.

Passing the music room means being accompanied by the melodious sound of instruments playing, singing and the excited chatter of students. But it wasn’t always that way.

Last semester, music teacher Wesley Hambright left due to budget cuts. This semester, Hambright returned as a permanent teacher.

“I’m very excited to be back and excited about all the talent here that without a music program, wouldn’t have a place to go,” Hambright said.

Music not only provides students with a creative outlet, but is needed to fulfill the necessary arts requirement, in order to graduate.

“The music program allows students to have some fun in class and is a requirement to receive a diploma,” Principal Deb Smith said.

Students such as senior Giselle Rizo understand the importance of having a music program.

“I think having a music program is important because many students express themselves through music so it gives them a way to harbor that passion,” Rizo said.

Music has been a strong tradition at DPMHS even since before the school started. Every year DPMHS holds Daniel Pearl World Music Day (DPWMD), a day when the whole school commemorates the journalist legacy, through music.

In this year’s DPWMD, Hambright plans to reflect portray different messages through music.

“I’m planning to reflect love, peace, brotherhood, and remembrance spoken in word of mouth through music. I want the messages to combine into a tapestry of meaning,” Hambright said.

Daniel Pearl World Music Day is here

Senior Katie Lashley has always loved sharing her poems with her peers. When she found out that she had the opportunity to perform for an audience of hundreds, she immediately took it.

“I felt that just writing a poem didn’t necessarily express its true nature,” Lashley said. “Instead of just being writing, I want it to be a great story and experience.”

Lashley will start off DPWMD with her original poem “Today Until Tomorrow” with senior Matthew Serenana playing the guitar under her poetry.

Alongside Lashley, other poets have been reciting their poems in efforts of mastering them for the school’s 7th annual Daniel Pearl World Music Day (DPWMD) on Oct. 28. The annual event recognizes the life of journalist Daniel Pearl, who was born on Oct. 10.

DPWMD was created in 2002 after the death of Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter. In addition to his love of journalism, Pearl had a passion for music. The

month-long celebration of his life developed by the Daniel Pearl Foundation has expanded to include 140 countries.

“The point of World Music Day is to build a community spirit and bring everyone together,” Principal Deb Smith said.

Beginning with the song “Imagine” and ending the concert with “Give Peace a Chance,” the choir hopes to encourage tolerance through music. DPWMD will also feature Noy Gawy and Chanel Kohanim singing “Aba,” a traditional Hebrew song.

“This is not only a music show, but a show about coming together and putting out a unified message,” said Daniel Pearl World Music Day’s music director Wes Hambright.

This year, Hambright is making significant changes to DPWMD. The newly formed choir will sing uplifting music to inspire compassion between different cultures. In between songs, poetry will be recited by students.

The 7th annual DPWMD will feature international greeters, singers, poets, a

variety of instruments and The Sardines, a band created by Matthew Sarenana, Ivan Trejo and Ethan Coffee.

On Oct. 26, sophomores, juniors and seniors will see the student performances.

Daniel Pearl’s parents, Ruth and Dr. Judea Pearl, will be watching the show on Oct. 28 alongside the freshman class and superintendent Michelle King.

Hambright hopes DPWMD will encourage students to join the music program.

“We have a holiday show coming up this year also, so hopefully, after Daniel Pearl World Music Day students are inclined to get involved,” Hambright said.

Hambright has been coaching the choir and band, helping them get past the struggles and improve for the show.

“World Music Day is the day we commemorate Daniel Pearl and preserve the great memories of him. It’s a great way to show that we care about him and what he’s done,” sophomore Cabrera said.

Compared to Trump, Clinton is the better choice Amanda Jimenez

espite an email scandal, possible corruption though the Democratic National Convention and Benghazi, Hillary Clinton is ultimately the better choice for president.

Clinton has been First lady, Senator of New York twice and Secretary of State. For four decades, she’s tirelessly overcome many political issues such as providing over 8 million children and 9/11 responders with the health care they deserve.

In 1995, Clinton gave a speech that opened the United Nations views on women’s rights in Beijing. She’s shown the world that both women and LGBTQ rights are human rights.

“Gay people should vote for her,” senior Cameron Vega said. “We need someone to fight for us. She will show everyone that we should have the same rights as heterosexuals.”

Clinton has been a strong contender who fights for the middle class, since the beginning of her career in government. Yet, her past experience is left unnoticed to most Americans because her faults are more prominent and have a greater effect.

“She would be a decent president overall but at the

same time we’ve never had a female president,” sophomore Keith Quiachon said. “I’m not being sexist but she’s the better choice.”

In the first presidential debate, Clinton spoke openly about taking full responsibility for using a private email server as Secretary of State. By taking this step forward, she’s shown all young Americans that mistakes happen and nothing should keep you down.

“She has shown me you can make anything better,” junior Jaleh Moslemi said. “Just try not to make anymore mistakes.”

Though Clinton has made many mistakes in her career, there are many important figures who stand behind her. People such as President Barack Obama and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

Even though she’s not been transparent in her ideas throughout her campaign, Clinton is fighting for human necessities like equal rights and pay. Though the polls are very close, that won’t stop voters from admiring everything Clinton’s bringing to the table.

“I support her because she perseveres even though some second guess her ability. She doesn’t let them bring her down,” sophomore Alishon Raymundo said.

Trump’s leaked comments on women creates media storm while losing support Daniela Guzman

n arguably the largest blow to his campaign, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump lost several potential female voters after the release of audio of him making inappropriate comments toward women back in 2005.

His words are unprofessional and utterly insulting. Trump has a history of making unnecessary comments about women, including to fat-shaming former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado, sexualizing his own daughter in 1994 and recently, saying that presidential nominee Hillary Clinton doesn’t have a “presidential look.”

“The disrespect of our ambitions and intellect. The belief that you can do anything you want to a woman. It is cruel.

It’s frightening,”Michelle Obama said in a speech in a Clinton rally on Oct. 13.

Trump’s recent scandal doesn’t necessarily come as a shocker, but with 55 percent of registered voters being female, there is no doubt that it won’t result without consequence. A survey conducted by ABC News after the release of the footage revealed that 62 percent of female

responders are now more unlikely to vote for Trump.

“I wanted to be able to support my party’s nominee…However, I am a mom and an American first and I cannot…support a candidate for president who brags about degrading and assaulting women,” Republican senator Kelly Ayotte said.

I can’t fathom the idea of having such a disrespectful and misogynistic president running this country. Valuing a woman solely from her looks strips away the many positive and influential qualities she holds.

His immigration plans on and building a wall on the Southern border hits close to home because of my Hispanic background. Calling Hispanics criminals, “drug dealers” and “rapists” not only makes him unappealing, but is another example of his incompetence to be the leader of this country.

“When human rights are involved, when immigration rights are involved, when discrimination and racism is involved, we... have to take a stand,” journalist Jorge Ramos said.

Fortunately, Trump is low in the polls compared to Clinton, especially with Latino voters in swing state.

In an election where the female vote is essential and in a country with a growing population of Hispanics, I never expected to have been so intrigued and anxious over the results of the election this November. If there is one thing I know for sure: in no way is Trump suitable to become the president.

“This is not politics as usual,” Michelle Obama said.

“This is disgraceful. This is intolerable.”

Makeup empowerment leads to unfair shaming through social media Julia Torres Copy Editor Makeup doesn’t come with a rulebook and yet there are so many makeup shamers with comments ready to tell people what they should do with their makeup.

Many side comments are made toward people who wear makeup. I hear a lot of comments from girls and guys about whether someone’s eyeliner is “too much” or they thought that one girl in the hallway should take it easy on the bright eyeshadow.

Youtuber Nikki De Jager created a video called #thepowerofmakeup and confronted makeup shamers. In her video, which received as many as 11 million views, De Jager applied makeup to only half of her face and showed the dramatic difference between her natural face and her face full of makeup.

“I feel like lately makeup shaming has become a thing,” De Jager said in the introduction of her video. “It’s as if putting makeup on to have fun is a shame so I thought it would be cool to show you the power of makeup”.

The power of makeup became a movement that encouraged makeup lovers to show they’re comfortable in their own skin, with or without makeup. They aren’t sitting in front of a mirror for an hour to impress just someone. They put makeup on for themselves and nobody else.

There are about 85,939 posts under the tag #thepowerofmakeup on Instagram of men and women who’ve shown their faces split with a makeup free and makeup full side. With so many people participating in the movement, women and men show they are fully confident with themselves and their makeup skills.

Of course, many comments surfaced under these photos such as, “This is why men have trust issues” and claiming these women to be fake and “catfishes.” The term “take her swimming on the first

date” is a comment made by people who feel they need to take a girl in the water to see what she looks like without makeup.

Women shouldn’t be labeled because they are able to use makeup to make their nose look smaller, enhance their lashes or even cover up freckles.

It is an individual’s choice on how they want their makeup to be and having to be labeled so harshly is outrageous.

“I’ve been told that ‘I don’t need to wear makeup’ and that ‘natural beauty is better’ when I wear makeup,” senior Valeria Sanchez said.

Garcia was let off the hook way too easily Former Special Education Assistant Daniel Garcia faced the accusations of three different charges for sexual misconduct with a minor and his only punishment was three years of formal probation.

Garcia’s initial court date was April 5, but it was postponed until August 25.

He then entered a no contest plea which resulted in Garcia never actually facing a trial.

According to documents from The Superior Court of California County of Los Angeles, Garcia was charged with one count of California penal code section 289(H) which states “any person who participates in an act of sexual penetration with another person who is under 18 years of age...” penal code section 647.6(A)(1) which states “every person who annoys or molests any child under 18 years of age...”, and penal code 261.5(C) which states “any person who engages in an act of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor..” The last charge was the only one he was convicted with.

Until he was able to post bail for $100,000, Garcia spent eight days in Los Angeles County jail. Aside from this, his only punishment was probation.

Garcia’s punishment was far too lenient, given the fact that sex crimes against minors are viewed by society as the worst type of crimes. All he has to do is report to his probation officer once a month Such a mild punishment, for a crime committed against an Los Angeles Unified School District student by an employee, is a red flag regarding school safety. As students, we no longer trust that we’re safe and if anything were to happen, the person responsible wouldn’t receive the appropriate consequences.

In order for students to once again feel safe, the justice system must punish sex offenders more harshly. They should not be able to walk free.

Students need to show school spirit on campus Alice Curran Staff Writer

While some high schools have various events celebrating their school spirit, Daniel Pearl Magnet High School students often lack that enthusiasm because of our small size. But there are several ways to change this attitude.

“We need more spirit days and we need to involve people in our school more,” said freshman Keona Paniagua.

Typical social events that display school spirit are energetic pep rallies, dances and game nights. Students at DPMHS are able to attend Birmingham Community Charter High Schools’ events but this does not inspire much school spirit here.

Even though DPMHS is an incredibly small school, there are numerous opportunities to show school pride. Students are always coming up with new ideas to make the social scene more engaging.

“One event mentioned last year was a triathlon and another was doing Easter baskets and maybe themed events for different holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah,” junior class president Nikita Opel said.

It’s important for everyone to participate in the events that are being held, such as school house activities and Fiesta Fridays. When dances are organized, they often get canceled because not enough students purchase tickets.

Fiesta Fridays and school dances are important ways our school raises money for the activities going on around campus. The more students participate in these events, the better they will be.

“People at this school talk so poorly about the events that go on, so I think that people need to talk highly of the events and we need to have more events, like school dances,” senior Jamie Timsit said.

Although, without the help and encouragement from teachers and faculty, it can be harder for the student body to set up these events. The more students and teachers work together, the more school spirit the school will have.

Students have come up with really creative ideas, but they struggle to follow through with them. This is often because of lack of support from facul-

ty and limited student participation.

“I think we should have a day where everyone wears school colors and another one where we have house parties,” freshman Sam Torres said.

If everyone at DPMHS works together to set up these various events, it would further inspire students to participate more actively in school. Which would lead to better high school experiences for everyone.

It’s necessary for DPMHS to balance rigorous academic standards with an active social scene. Spirit events are a great way for students to de-stress and socialize. Increased school spirit

would allow students, teachers and faculty to create a positive environment.

“I think it builds a sense of community and belonging. Students like to see teachers supporting what they’re doing. We need to be the models of our school,” Principal Deb Smith said.

If everyone at school becomes motivated enough to organize school spirit events and actively participates in them, DPMHS would become a more united community.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Steven Guzman Staff Writer

The beloved “Harry Potter” series continues to grow worldwide with the upcoming release of “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.”

The film takes place before any of the events in the “Harry Potter” series, which means none of the well-known heroes such as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermoine Granger will be appearing in this new film. Fans will however get a glimpse of the Headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore who will be having a small role in this new film.

J.K. Rowling, author of all seven “Harry Potter” books has released a physical copy of the book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” The book includes information of the many strange and magical creatures that live in the wizarding world.

The title “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them” was first mentioned in the first Harry Potter book, “Harry Potter And the Sorcerer’s Stone,” when Harry is buying supplies at Diagon Alley for his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. One of the supplies on his list is this textbook.

The story takes place in New York, 1926. Magizoologist, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just finished a

global journey to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures from around the world. While in New York, Scamander meets a No-Maj, American for muggle, named Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler).

During Scamander’s stay in New York, his magical case that possesses all of the magical creatures, is misplaced. Due to the misplacement of the case, the magical creatures escape. It’s up to Scamander and his allies to recover the missing beasts before they cause havoc to both the wizarding and muggle world.

The film stars Oscar-winning actor Redmayne, who is also featured in films such as “The Theory of Everything” and “The Danish Girl.” The film also stars actor Fogler, who has appeared in films such as “Fanboys” and “Take Me Home Tonight”.

“I have a feeling Voldemort will return,” said senior Cameron Vega “I hope that Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson make an appearance.”

Rowling recently confirmed at a global fan event that “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” will be a 5 film series.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” will be released on Nov. 18 for all Potterheads to enjoy.

Dr. Strange Is average Doctor Sergio Payeras Staff Writer

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues its third phase with the release of its new film, “Doctor Strange.”

The second film in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will feature Benedict Cumberbatch as young, arrogant neurosurgeon Stephen Strange.

It is expected that the film will introduce another one of the five Infinity Stones, which are cosmic artifacts that grant its holder control over things such as space, time, reality, minds and souls.

These five stones will play a major part in the 2018 “Avengers: Infinity War,” in which S t r a n g e ’s character is confirmed to make an appearance.

S o far, only the space, reali- ty and mind stones have been discovered, leaving either the time or soul stone to be revealed in future movies like “Doctor Strange.” As always, Stan Lee will make some sort of cameo appearance during the film.

“Doctor Strange” will be released in theatres on Nov. 4, 2016.

Varsity football tackles the new season head on Richard Mendiola and Daniela Guzman

he Birmingham Community Charter High School (BCCHS) varsity football team kicked the season off with a losing streak, but is determined to make a comeback in the upcoming games.

“I’m always looking for different ways to make my game mentally and physically better,” varsity player Dean Khazanov said.

Despite the tough start of their season, the Patriots were able to add to the excitement of their homecoming game this past Friday with an enthusiastic victory.

William Howard Taft Charter High School’s varsity team lost to the Patriots in a final score of 49-10. Through this win, the Patriots are able to continue into the playoffs after kicking their rival out.

“It was just amazing from every angle and I couldn’t have wished for a better game,” Khazanov said.

After their loss to Thousand Oaks High School on Sept. 23, the varsity team has been working harder than ever. Khazanov hopes to help the team obtain a better record and he’s hopeful the team will win a championship this season.

“Everyday practice lately has just been drills, testing team formations, analyzing other teams’ formations and conditioning,” Khazanov said.

Khazanov has been a part of the varsity team for a year and has made many memorable plays throughout the experience.

“I can’t believe that it has been a year since I’ve been a part of the varsity team and I enjoy every second of it,” Khazanov said. “My favorite game I’ve played so far is against Canoga Park High School. I felt

With the sport in season and after school practice everyday, players are feeling the stress levels rise and are struggling

“It’s very hard for me to manage school and football. I end up with no freetime,” Khazanov said. “I make sure to always study and complete my homework to keep up with school.”

The Birmingham Patriots currently have a record of four losses and three wins and are going to face off against Granada Hills High School on Oct. 21.

Athlete of the Month of October: Senior Gera Pimenov Daniela Guzman

Photo by Daniela Guzman Senior Gera Pimenov started boxing in March and practices at least four times a week. He is actively looking for a boxing gym to practice in.

With less than a year of experience in boxing, senior Gera Pimenov has already discovered techniques to make himself completely attentive when challenging an opponent in the ring.

“I don’t really feel any emotion, I just try to stay as focused as I can because it’s really important to not let any distractions take over,” Pimenov said.

Pimenov piqued an interest in boxing earlier this March while searching for a way to stay healthy. He began practicing at LA Fitness but currently does not have a gym to box in regularly.

Nonetheless, he still makes an effort to practice at least four times a week.

Boxing can be a very demanding sport and Pimenov acknowledges that there is much more to it than simply trying to punch his opponent. Strategies such as making himself appear weaker in order to surprise his opponent and counteract their attack come in handy when winning is the main priority.

Even with being enrolled in two AP courses, balancing a 3.75 G.P.A. and being employed at a retirement home, Pimenov is still able to keep a flexible schedule and play the sport he is passionate about.

“Practicing doesn’t really take that much time, maybe an hour a day, hour and a half,” Pimenov said. “I have plenty of time to do everything.”

Each passing month signifies an impending graduation date and the future seems closer than ever before, but Pimenov isn’t worried about his plans after high school. He aspires to get a master’s degree in business administration or acquire a license in physical therapy. Pimenov is optimistic he will get the chance to accomplish both.

Continuing to box isn’t out of the question when it comes to Pimenov’s plan for the years to come.

“When I’m in college, I’m going to have a lot of amateur fights, so I know for a fact that I’m going to keep boxing,” Pimenov said.
