Morning Exercise Prepares Students for Success in the Classroom Parish elementary students are getting to school bright and early, sliding on their rain boots, and heading out the classroom door, ready to join their classmates on a brisk morning walk around campus. The new ritual, which started last spring and usually takes about 15 minutes, gets their brains focused and ready for the day ahead.

Much research has been released that supports the benefits of morning exercise in helping children maintain focus in the classroom, which has been seen in our students. While some choose to walk and some choose to run, they’re all “getting their wiggles out” and their brains and bodies ready to learn.

“It helps us think about the teacher,” said Daniela, age 7.

For students who tend to fidget a lot, it has helped them to release energy and pay better attention in morning class. Lower Elementary Teacher, Laura Jackson, has kept notes on one of her busiest students. She found that every morning the student went on a walk, his behavior was much more regulated and improved.

Morning walks build community among our different class levels and give students more time to connect. Students chat with one another and grow in their use of language, strength, and ability to think about each other.

“We saw immense benefits in helping bridge the Upper and Lower Elementary communities, as the older students were able to look after and monitor our younger students on the walk,” said Meagan Rosales, Sailors Teacher.

With nature and wildlife being a huge part of the Parish campus, classes work on safety and awareness, too—especially during snake season.

Students know to stay together and keep to the trails, but also have the opportunity to stop and observe our natural environment. The Sailors keep a collection of interesting items that they’ve found on their walks, including large, bur oak acorns, butterfly wings and empty cocoons.

And of course, the health benefits are clear, too, as students who don’t enjoy much physical activity have been able to gain more stamina to keep up with their peers. One particular child started out frequently needing to rest on morning walks, but that is no longer the case!

“After two months, he lost weight, was running the whole way and loving it!” said Seekers Teacher, Heather Hillery.

After nearly a year of this morning ritual, students and teachers can agree, morning walks have proven to be the best way to start the day.

Alumni Spotlight: Cameron Dawson Former Parish Student: 1998-2003

Cameron first came to The Parish School at age 2 after receiving a diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) — one of the four autism spectrum disorders. He could only utter a handful of words, most of which were hard for others to comprehend. The neurologists who diagnosed Cameron recommended several schools that could help him with his language deficiencies, one of which was The Parish School.

“We looked at all the recommended schools and were immediately drawn to Parish,” said Wendy, Cameron’s stepmom. “We could see it was such a loving environment and was focused on innovative methods for helping children overcome their language and learning differences.”

Through The Parish School’s education, training and care, Cameron gained fluency of speech and discovered his super power — his memory. Not only did The Parish School allow Cameron to gain communication skills, but it also provided him an invaluable sense of self-esteem and confidence, which continue to serve him well.

Thanks to early intensive language and learning intervention, Cameron was able to transfer to a mainstream private elementary school in second grade.

We truly believe Cameron would not be where he is today with out The Parish School. We know that he has an incred ible future ahead of him – thanks to the foundation that Parish built.

Cameron, now 22, is a proud senior at Texas Tech University studying communications, who drives and holds part-time jobs.

• Adventure Play Camp: A unique opportunity for children to engage in self-directed outdoor play and construct their own playground with the support of trained playworkers.

Open to all children ages 6-12 -- those with language needs, their siblings, and the general community.

• Sibling Day Camp: A fun-filled camp experience for siblings of students attending our language intervention program.

• Early Morning and Afternoon Enrichment: Elementary classes offer a variety of extracurricular activities: cooking, yoga, art, splash day and more! Early Childhood students have an opportunity for rest time and participation in fun physical activities, arts and crafts and more.

Helping You Help Children Communicate

It is so important that every member of a child’s treatment team is empowered to support their growth and has the tools to help that child succeed. The Parish School seeks to develop resources for growing the skills of our staff, families and students. The Hanen Centre©, a non-profit organization, shares this goal of helping others to help children communicate.

Within the past year, Parish has implemented several programs from the Hanen organization as part of family and staff training.

Last Spring, six early childhood families participated in the It Takes Two to Talk® (ITTT) program, a group training developed specifically for parents of children under the age of 5 who have language delays.

Throughout the semester, parents met each week with a Hanen-certified speech-language pathologist to discuss evidenced-based strategies to support their children’s communication through natural, everyday language activities. Parents also received individual coaching with the SLP to help refine strategy use, develop goals for their child, and create personalized home activities.

Leilah Weir, one of the ITTT program graduates, shares, “I was immensely grateful for the insights from the group. I enjoyed hearing success stories of the techniques we were trying. I realized early on that my approach to engaging my daughter was lacking…

I learned that her experience and mine are completely different. So, I made changes to always consider her point of view. Once I physically started to get down on her level, I found that it was easier to engage her…

I think we both benefited from the program in that it reintroduced us to each other and helped to transform our communication.”

Seeing the positive effects on parents and wanting to continue this evolution of engagement and interaction, The Parish School’s Early Childhood department began implementing another Hanen program, Learning Language and Loving It® (LLLI), this fall. LLLI is a training program for educators to learn research-based strategies for enhancing the social and communication skills of all students in their classes.

Staff meets for intensive group training, as well as individual coaching and feedback sessions with Hanencertified speech-language pathologists.

One of the most recent sessions was a discussion regarding shared book reading. Staff brought their favorite books and practiced making book reading a time for interaction.

Elsie Torres, early childhood special educator, shared her biggest take-away: “There is always a fine line between trying to read a story and letting the students interrupt with their thoughts and ideas. It is helpful to think about it as having a conversation while we read.”

For staff new and old, it has been beneficial to define shared strategies across classrooms, finetune individualized supports, and discuss evidencebased methods.

The Parish School hopes to include more parent and staff Hanen resources in the future. Be on the lookout for future program offerings.

A few of our favorite Hanen strategies to try during book reading with your child:

Face-to-Face: Try sitting side-to-side or across from each other during reading, placing your body and face at a similar level to your child’s.

Being face-to-face allows for your child to more easily receive information from your words and facial expressions.

Observe, Wait, Listen (OWL): • Observe – Once you are face-to-face, it will be much easier to observe your child’s interests related to the book. Watch to see where their gaze lands.

• Wait – Wait for your child to initiate before you say anything.

When you wait for your child to look, point or begin talking about a picture, you can determine their communicative interest and give them the language they desire. Waiting can feel awkward, but this supports the child’s internal motivation to communicate. Turn the page, observe your child and wait expectantly – look at them with interest and excitement for at least five seconds.

• Listen – Listen for your child to initiate – be it a gesture, sound, word or sentence.

Then actively listen and respond to what they say!

Follow Your Child’s Lead: Let your child set the pace for reading. Spend extra time on the pages in which they are interested and move on from those that do not grab their attention.

Respond with warmth and interest to the items and ideas they show you.

Exploring Our Community This fall, elementary classes focused on the theme of community. Students explored the people, characteristics, and locations of our communities, learning about what they have in common, as well as about their diversity.

Using inquiry-based learning and research skills, students took the lead in deciding how to study and explore what it means to be part of a community.

This is how a few classes explored the topic:

The Whos Class (Primary Elementary) Looking to learn more about careers and how people work in their communities, Whos teacher, Caralou Smith, invited several visitors to stop by their class and talk about their jobs, including Georgea Pappas, Culinary Research & Development Manager at Pappas Restaurants. The Whos had a great time learning to put together their own fruit and yogurt parfait with secret ingredient: sprinkles!

They also met Stephen Wiggins of Dashhound Walking and Pet Services, and his pet boa constrictor. Whos learned what is involved in caring for pets of all shapes and sizes!

The Campers Class (Primary Elementary) With Campers students taking a particular interest in our elderly community, their teacher, Libby Hall, reached out to former Parish paraeducator, Helene Kramer, to stop by for a class visit. Helene and her husband, Marshall, talked all about their former careers, what life is like being retired, and how they like to spend their time. The Campers asked lots of questions about what elderly people like to do and where they like to go during their day.

The Campers also took a field trip to a local assisted living facility, The Solana Vintage Park. When they arrived, they visited resident Laura Roth, the mother of The Parish School’s Director of Arts and Sciences, Terri Garth. They toured the facility and saw Laura’s room, participated in chair yoga with the residents, and tried out walkers, canes and wheelchairs.

A few weeks later, the Solana residents dropped by to see the class at school. The Campers presented photo gifts to thank their visitors for showing them around on their field trip and gave poster presentations of famous elderly people they researched.

“The kids and the residents loved it,” said Terri. “Their faces just lit up when the kids talked to them.”

The Grizzly Bears and Tiger Classes (Lower Elementary) Realizing that while they were very familiar with the jobs their teachers, Christy Hobbs and Laura Jackson, perform each day, the students in the Grizzly Bears and Tigers classes didn’t really understand the roles of the other staff members at The Parish School. To learn more about the greater Parish community, each student selected a staff member to interview and shadow for about 20 minutes during their work day. The students took what they learned back to their classmates and presented what their shadow buddy did for the school.

At the end of the unit, the two classes invited their buddies to a party where they showed their presentation, which included photos and videos, and thanked them for all they do for The Parish School.

“Our students enjoyed learning about staff members and now feel more connected with everyone in our Parish community,” said Laura. “We’ve even received reports that a student had so much fun shadowing Janice Straker, Parish’s Volunteer and Events Coordinator, that she now wants to be an event planner when she grows up!”

The Seekers Class (Upper Elementary) Who doesn’t love Chick-fil-A? With one opening around the corner from Parish, The Seekers and their teacher Heather Hillery were very interested in learning about this new business. As part of their project, students went online to find out how to place a group order. They calculated how much it would cost and scheduled their own lunch order for the day. Not only did they gain understanding of the logistics in managing money and making a purchase, but they enjoyed a tasty treat in the process. (Photo on opposite page.)

Giving Voice to Children Luncheon Brings Awareness to Children Who Have Special Needs Supporters of The Parish School and children who have communication delays and learning differences recently gathered for the school’s 10th annual Giving Voice to Children Luncheon. Held at the Junior League of Houston, The Parish School’s luncheon raises funds to support school operations and its financial assistance fund for families.

A sold-out crowd of over 300 supporters and guests attended the luncheon in support of the special needs school. This year’s event was chaired by alumni parent and director and founder of Social Motion Skills, Wendy Dawson; current parents, Sydney and Barry Goss; and alumni parents, Clyde and Bill Crook.

The event honored Terri Garth, The Parish School’s Director of Integrated Arts and Sciences. Terri is a veteran educator of more than 25 years and was instrumental in the development of the theater program at The Parish School, where she has cowritten more than 20 original musicals and adaptations of scripts. She has also directed the arts department at Parish and the Margaret Noecker Nature Center since their inceptions.

Emceeing the event for a second year was Kaitlin Monte, evening reporter for Houston’s FOX-26 KRIV. Growing up alongside three siblings with special needs, Kaitlin became an early advocate for disability awareness.

Guests were introduced to the concept of using risk and uncertainty to promote creative expression in students, in an engaging keynote address from Ronald Beghetto, PhD, expert on creative thought and action in educational settings. A Professor of Educational Psychology and Director of Innovation House at the University of Connecticut, Ron’s work highlights how making slight changes to existing practices can result in new ways of thinking and acting.

Also recognized at the event was Community Partner of the Year, Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, a full-service law firm with more than 600 attorneys in locations across the world.

Through Katten’s pro bono law program— especially the work of Greg Dillard and Emily Roshy—The Parish School has been the grateful recipient of gratis legal services, equating to tens of thousands of dollars saved by the school.

A heartfelt moment came courtesy of luncheon chair, Barry Goss, who stood on stage alongside his wife, Sydney, to share their family’s journey to The Parish School.

Their 3-year-old son, Spencer, was diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech,

a neurological disorder that makes it hard to speak. Barry described this past year as truly transformative, as Spencer has made great progress towards his speech goals, but just as importantly, truly loves his days at school.

Prior to the luncheon, underwriters were invited to a special reception at the Hotel Zaza Memorial City, where they had the opportunity to mix and mingle with Ron Beghetto, Terri Garth and other Parish supporters in a more intimate and casual setting.

Overall, thanks to very generous friends and families of The Parish School, the event raised a record-breaking $75,000 for the school.

Experience a Night “Under the Big Top” at The Parish School’s Annual Gala The Parish School will host its 26th annual gala, “Under the Big Top,” at 6:30 p.m.

Jan. 25 at The Ballroom at Bayou Place. Chaired by Kate and Doug Bacon and Bailey and Simon Haidamous, this annual event raises much-needed funds for the school and financial assistance for families.

During this fun-filled night out, guests may peruse a silent auction, socialize and enjoy cocktails before a seated dinner and program. With exciting circus entertainment, like a magician, aerial artists, stilt walkers and more, this will be a party like none other.

The auction portion of the event will allow attendees to bid on several luxurious vacation packages, United Airline’s Elite 1K Premier status, an overnight stay and round of golf at Bluejack National Club & Community, and the exclusive opportunity to throw the opening pitch at a Houston Astros game. Bourbon and wine enthusiasts will be delighted by several rare collections, including a bourbon package containing Pappy Van Winkle’s 15 Year Reserve, and a luxury wine cellar selection from Houston wine scholar, Demetrios Anaipakos.

Additionally, sports memorabilia, dining packages, high-end home goods, custom boots, entertainment tickets, and much more will be available for bidding!

This year’s program honors retiring Head of School, Nancy Bewley, with the Golden Oak award. This award is presented in recognition of those who exemplify the values of The Parish School. In her roles as classroom speech-language pathologist, principal and head of school, Nancy has spent the past 20 years devoted to advancing the mission of The Parish School and impacting the lives of hundreds of families. With incredible determination and stamina, she has raised the profile of the school while keeping to the foundational values established by her friends and colleagues, Founder Robbin Parish, and former Head of School Margaret Noecker. During Nancy’s tenure as Head of School, she has guided the school through significant change while immensely increasing the school’s visibility in the community; led two noteworthy reaccreditations; and made significant upgrades to campus security, technology and facilities. She leads with an incredibly positive and encouraging nature that serves the school, students and staff first and foremost, and for that we honor her.
