Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org 9/11 REMEMBERED Seventeen years ago, the continuing TV coverage of the imploding twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York was unbearable for me, as were accounts of the crashes and destruction in Washington and the hills of Pennsylvania. The immense devastation of human life was incomprehensible. Visiting the site in New York some five years later reopened searing wounds, and overwhelmed me with immense sadness. An incursion on our soil, carefully planned and executed by foreign elements, had shattered my cherished sense of security, and provoked a frightening sense of God's absence.

How could my Catholic faith tradition enable me to endure this tragedy? I knew that neither vengeance nor sweeping animosity was an option for me.

You have left us crushed . . . covered us with darkness.

We are bowed down to the ground (Psalm 44:20, 26).

O LORD of hosts, restore us; Let your face shine upon us (Psalm 80:4).

The Psalmist cries a lament, expressing the mourning of the Israelite people, the chosen of God, who had regarded themselves as untouchable and above reproach, now hurled into misery. The lament expresses a nation's agony, dares to complain against their divine protector, may even own some complicity in the misery, and finally pleads with God for deliverance.

In the midst of lamenting, the faith of Israel endured, as must ours. We are as vulnerable as they were to the violence and hatred that seem to encircle us. Our demand for a divine explanation goes unheeded. Yet we have learned of the selfsacrificing heroism of many, witnessing to the finest character of our nation and of our Christian heritage. Dying for one's friends is a sacred theme in our story, epitomized in Jesus, our Savior, and extended through centuries in the grandest and noblest acts of men and women in all circumstances.

In 2001 we came together as one nation under God, sharing the grief, the disillusionment, and the promise to rebuild. As today we lament our honored dead and wounded, shall we translate such agonizing emotion into a persistent pursuit of worldwide reconciliation and peace?

Eucharistic Adoration - Year Round In Christ Chapel on Wednesday from 10 am-12 noon Why should I sit a while with Jesus?

What is Eucharistic Adoration?

Understood simply, Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. In a deeper sense, it involves "the contemplation of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us". During Eucharistic Adoration, we "watch and wait", we remain "silent" in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist The Monstrance contains the Sacred Host. At all other times, the reserved Sacrament is kept locked in the Tabernacle, so that the faithful may pray in the presence of the Sacrament.

The Eucharist is: Jesus truly present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity!

The film is a portrayal of the story of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare, and the founding of the Franciscan order. The film was directed by Franco Zeffirelli and was released in 1973. The feast of St. Francis is October 4. This event also satisfies one of the intergenerational requirements.

CONFIRMANDI Saturday, September 15, 2018 Confirmandi will have a retreat at 1 pm in Madonna Hall. The retreat will close with the attendance of the 5 pm Mass.

Practice for Confirmation will be Sunday, October 14 at 2 pm Either the sponsor or a parent should attend.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. In terms of Christian discipleship, we must hear and come to know Jesus before we can proclaim who he is.

Looking to mighty deeds that we think may be unfolding around us today—reports of miracles, etc.—is not where this gospel leads us. Rather, the gospel leads us to see Christ in the little things around us—the caring touch, the encouraging smile, the unexpected friendly phone call—and interpret these as “mighty deeds.” We ought to be “astonished” today by the many manifestations of God’s presence in and through the people around us. We ought to be astonished at how God uses us as instruments to proclaim the good news of salvation. We ought to be so keyed into Jesus’ presence that we, too, cannot contain ourselves but must proclaim these mighty deeds.

It is hard to believe that Summer is quickly coming to a close. We have had a wonderful string of beautiful days and mild weather. This year there has been a larger than usual number of butterflies on our campus. Make some time to enjoy the nice days ahead for us to enjoy. Take the time to enjoy the outdoors during the months of September and October. Taking regular walks is a nice way for fresh air and some good exercise. We have completed a lot of projects this Summer. I am grateful to our parish staff and summer helpers and all of those who worked with them. Additionally, I must express our thanks to all the volunteers who generously give their time and talent, especially those who work in the Parish Office filing, shredding, typing, folding and stuffing mailers, photocopying and welcoming those who come for church business. As we begin a new catechetical year, we are grateful to all those who staff our

parish religious education programs. All of this could not be possible without their willingness to share time and talent.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis in a letter to all the Faithful has encouraged opportunities of prayer for victims and survivors of sexual abuse.

His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, has directed each pastor to prepare an opportunity of prayer as called for by the Holy Father. Here in our parish we have dedicated time this weekend, Sunday, 9 September 2018 beginning with the 12:00 noon Mass until 5:00 pm in the Church. We will celebrate Mass and then have Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament at the Main Altar throughout the afternoon.

The Mysteries of the Rosary will be prayed at 3:00 pm.

Vespers, followed by Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament, will be prayed at 4:45 pm. I encourage you to come together with me in prayer for the victims and survivors of sexual abuse and for the purification of the church.

Congratulations to the ladies of the Martha Mary Guild for another successful clothing drive. The proceeds raised are distributed to assist non-profits especially those assisting women and children.

This week the priests of the Diocese of Trenton will meet Tuesday Evening though Thursday for a convocation.

This year’s facilitator is His Excellency, The Most Reverend Arthur Serratelli, Bishop of the Diocese of Paterson, NJ. Please pray for the priests of our diocese. The above is the website description of the next musical that the Martha Mary Guild is sponsoring on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Tony nominees, Irene Sankoff & David Hein collaborated on this remarkable tale. The director, Christopher Ashley, is an accomplished Tony winner. Newsweek is quoted as saying: “It takes you to a place you never want to leave”. NY Times critic Ben Brantley, called it “the big bearhug of a musical”.

Martha Mary Guild Celebrates 45th Anniversary On 12 September 2018, the Martha Mary Guild will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary.

Our special guest of honor will be Pastor Emeritus – Reverend Fr. William J. Bausch, who served as our Pastor for 23 years.

He is an award winning author of numerous books on parish ministry, the sacraments, Church history, storytelling, and homiletics. He is well known both here and abroad.

45 years ago, Fr. Bausch had the foresight of bringing women of the parish together and empowering them to assist and serve in meeting the needs of the people within the parish, and also extending outward to the Colts Neck community and beyond – especially to benefit women and children. Thus, the birth of this vibrant organization known as the Martha Mary Guild!

The program will be a time of awakening some fond memories of past years (with a good dose of humor, of course) but also touch upon the role of women today, and the Martha Mary Guild of the future. As always, Fr. Bausch opens our eyes and hearts to look at each day and say: “Yes!” Join us at 11:30 a.m. to pray the rosary in the Spiritual Center Chapel, followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch), with refreshments provided by the Guild, in Madonna Hall. Father Bausch will begin around 12:30. All are welcome!
