How do you know God welcomes you after you do that? Question for Youth: The prodigal son was welcomed home even though he had sinned. How hard is it for you to ask for forgiveness? Is it hard for you to believe that you are still loved even when you have sinned? Question for Adults: When you wander away from being true to your faith, how do you know God will take you back? What signs do you see? -Lifelong Catechesis Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick or Visitation of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick is available to seriously ill members of our Parish either at home or in the hospital. What is Canon Law? Canon Law is a code of ecclesiastical laws governing the Catholic Church. The Revised Code of Canon Law was promulgated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1983, and allows for individual episcopal conferences to apply regional attributes to the law, which are referred to as Complementary Norms. In the United States, this is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The laws and norms of the Church (with a capital C), govern nearly all aspects of her body, with the goal of providing uniformity in practice, so that all members may have similar if not identical experiences in celebrating life, both within and outside of Mass. Some items that may interest the average church-goer include*: Sacraments: When and where Holy Communion can take place, who can receive (Catholics who are not conscious of any grave sin, who have abstained from food for at least an hour prior to receiving), the ages and other requirements for Holy Orders, the rules governing Confirmation and sponsors for Confirmation and Baptism, freedom to marry. Confession, in particular: While face-to-face confessions are more commonplace today, especially during parish-wide penance and reconciliation services (which are also becoming more common), there must always be the option for a penitent to confess to a priest while separated by a curtain, screen, grill, etc. Funerals: For whom funeral Masses may be given, days when the rites are forbidden (Good Friday, Holy Saturday, for example), proper burial of mortal remains. Temporal (or Earthly) goods of the church: The church may acquire goods through any means as is legal in that country. Parishes in the United States are required to have finance councils to assist the pastor in over-seeing the finances of that parish. Holy Days: Masses must be held for the faithful on Holy Days of Obligation, and on certain Solemnities and Feasts throughout the year. Local norms permit the moving of some feasts (The Ascension for example, is celebrated in the province of Newark on a Thursday, while most other US provinces transfer it to Sunday) Fasting and Abstinence: The age to abide by the laws and days on which they are to be observed. *In the words of the author, not from the norms themselves These are but a small portion of the Laws and Norms that govern our church. In a future article, a brief insight into the Roman Missal will be explored.
Mass Schedule Change - Please prepare for this adjustment. The Saturday night 5 pm Mass will move to 4 pm starting Saturday, October 5, 2019. Penance and Reconciliation will move from 4 pm to 3 pm Saturday. (this schedule will run through Palm Sunday Weekend).

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The amazing thing is that we know the cost of discipleship, yet we spend our whole lives trying to figure it out! We know that we must hand our lives over to Jesus, we know that we are given wisdom and the Holy Spirit to be faithful (see the first reading) yet, like the children of Hamelin, we aren’t quite sure where the journey leads. We just follow. It would be nice to say that we shouldn’t start what we can’t finish. If we calculate the cost or have undue concern for what others think, or weigh the risks of discipleship, we probably would not begin the journey to follow. We do begin discipleship at baptism. The challenge, then, is not to look at the cost but keep our eyes on Jesus who leads. And Jesus’ death always leads to new life. This is worth the cost. Many thanks to all those who donated items for the Martha Mary Clothing Sale. The ladies work very hard to make this an opportunity for many to participate. Thanks also to those who came and shopped. The proceeds benefit the charities of the Guild…primarily those supporting women and children. This coming week the priests of the Diocese of Trenton, those incardinated, adjunct and religious serving assignments here, will gather for our Annual Convocation. This is a time for us to participate in some conferences, prayer and fraternity. His Excellency The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton convenes the gathering and is available to the priests. I am grateful to our parish staff for continuing the work of our parish in my absence as well as to Father Victor Hoagland for covering the weekday masses in my absence. Next weekend Father Victor will celebrate the Mass and Preach the Homily on Sunday, 15
September at 10 am. This year he observes the 60th Anniversary of Priestly Ministry, 30 of those years he has been a regular here in 07722. We will host a light reception so that you may greet and thank him for his service to the Church and to our Parish Community. There are many Faith Formation opportunities that are starting up in the coming weeks. RE online, on campus and Confirmation PREP kick off in the coming weeks. Walking With Purpose Womens Bible Study/Catechesis begins this month with several levels for new and returning participants. Bible Study for Adults begins as well. Take time to participate in these opportunities as well as utilizing the FORMED web based materials to enrich your understanding and love of our Catholic Faith. We continue to make slow, steady progress toward reaching our 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal Goal. Please make your gift/pledge this week so that we can support the efforts of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton as he leads our Local Church. I was with the pastors of Co-hort 13 recently and learned that both Saint Gabriel, Marlboro and Saint Benedict, Hazlet/Holmdel have both surpassed their 2019 ACA goals. I was somewhat embarrassed to share that we were just crossing the 50% mark, but I did. Why is it that these neighboring parishes willingly and regularly strive to support our Bishop while we struggle with this idea? I really don’t know why this reluctance has been part of our parish for these many years. I hope that we can at least reach our goal thus demonstrating our love for the Church, our Diocese and our Bishop. Enough said…you get the point. Have a great week. Let us pray for one another. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

From Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, the writers/co-producers of God’s Not Dead, comes a film that speaks to one of the most polarizing topics of our day. Unplanned brings us an eye-opening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate. After reading Abby Johnson’s best-selling book of the same title, Cary and Chuck were moved to bring this inspiring true story to the big screen, giving voice to a woman who has been on both sides of the abortion conversation. Unplanned is the most important movie you’ll ever see on the most controversial issue of our time. No matter which side of the fence you’re on, no one will leave this film unmoved by Abby’s journey.
