Ordinary Time III (Autumn) Ordinary Time is divided into two parts. The first portion occurs after the end of the Christmas Season and the Baptism of the Lord. Ordinary Time is then interrupted by the seasons of Lent and Easter. It resumes following the Solemnity of Pentecost at the end of the Easter Season. This second “half” is much larger than the first and some communities place a division within this portion. As the title of this article suggest, this last part of Ordinary Time occurs in the Autumn months, the exact time of year is left up to the local parishes, or may not be observed as a time of change at all. It is a busy time of year in both the liturgical and civic calendars.

On the weekend of Rev. Peter James Alindogan, Trenton Diocesan Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States, will speak at all Masses on behalf of our mission partners. During the past years, our diocese has shared our resources to needy and developing countries where the life giving presence of Christ in our world is proclaimed and professed. Our second collection the weekend of September 17 and 18, will be taken to support the needs of our Catholic churches in third world countries. Thank you for being part of our Mission Family and in spreading the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in these developing nations of the world. Please be as generous as possible in this second collection.
Saint of the Week: Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin and Martyr, c. 310 This saint is said to have been born into a patrician family of Alexandria and converted after seeing a vision of Our Lady and the Holy Child. When the Emperor Maxentius began persecuting Christians, Catherine, only eighteen, went to him and scolded him for his tyranny. Unable to answer her arguments against his gods, Maxentius summoned fifty philosophers to oppose her. The fifty were themselves converted by Catherine and the infuriated Maxentius had them burned to death. Read more HERE.

Beginning this year on Labor Day weekend, continuing with the Exaltation of the Cross and concluding with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, this season also includes: The Solemnity of All Saints, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, our annual Ecumenical Service with the Colts Neck Reformed Church, and the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion in our parish. The liturgical color of the vestments remains green, but a keen eye will notice a different shade, in line with the changing of the colors in the natural world around us.
WEEKEND
www.stmaryscoltsneck.org September 4, 2022 4 Worship & Music
Toward the end of this season, there is a shift in the tone of the Sunday readings towards the end of time. This section of readings from about the 30th week onward are referred to as the “last weeks (or days) of Ordinary time” referring both to the content of the readings and the more literal nature of the season coming to an end. Here in our parish, the musical setting of the Mass changes to Tony Alonso’s Mass for Joy & Peace. This is a modern setting, incorporating mildly syncopated rhythms with a very simple harmonic structure, a verse/refrain style Gloria, and other frequenting repeated motive which foster familiarity among the assembly. The chanting of the propers for communion continues, as this is the preferred option according to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. At certain celebrations, a hymn may be equally appropriate and those will be utilized as well. CO-OP

My Dear Parishioners:
There are many Faith Formation opportunities that are starting up in the coming weeks. RE online, on campus and Confirmation PREP kick off in the coming weeks. Walking With Purpose Women’s Bible Study/ Catechesis continues this month with several levels for new and returning participants. Bible Study for Adults begins as well. Take time to participate in these opportunities as well as utilizing the FORMED web based materials to enrich your understanding and love of our Catholic Faith. We continue to make slow, steady progress toward reaching our 2022 Annual Catholic Appeal Goal. Please make your gift/pledge payment this week so that we can support the efforts of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton as he leads our Local Church. Have a great week. Let us pray for one another.Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
Today we celebrate the Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The amazing thing is that we know the cost of discipleship, yet we spend our whole lives trying to figure it out! We know that we must hand our lives over to Jesus, we know that we are given wisdom and the Holy Spirit to be faithful (see the first reading) yet, like the children of Hamelin, we aren’t quite sure where the journey leads. We just follow. It would be nice to say that we shouldn’t start what we can’t finish. If we calculate the cost or have undue concern for what others think, or weigh the risks of discipleship, we probably would not begin the journey to follow. We do begin discipleship at baptism. The challenge, then, is not to look at the cost but keep our eyes on Jesus who leads. In Jesus death always leads to new life. This is worth the cost. This weekend we observe the Labor Day Civic Holiday. It is a time for us to reflect on the gift of human labor. Having been blessed by God with unique gifts and talents, we are called to actively participate in the work force in order to support our families and to contribute to society. Let us also prayerfully remember those who have died while working. Let us continue to pray for and support safety in the workplace and just wages for men and women in the workforce. Our Catholic Church has long been a champion for justice in the workplace since the Pontificate of Pope Leo XIII in the 19th century. Mass will be celebrated Monday at 9:00am in the Nextchapel.week

the priests of the Diocese of Trenton, those incardinated, adjunct and religious serving assignments here, will gather for our Annual Convocation. This is a time for us to participate in some conferences, prayer and fraternity. His Excellency The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton convenes the gathering and is available to the priests. This year the priests will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination with Bishop O’Connell. It is a time to build priestly fraternity and support our diocesan bishop. I am grateful to our parish staff for continuing the work of our parish in my absence as well as to Father Tony Carotenuto for covering the weekday masses in my absence.

It’s time to get back into the swing of things. And, the Martha Mary Guild is ready to do just that. Mark your calendars for a very special meeting on Wednesday, September 14. For our first meeting of the year, our guest presenter will be Linda Kenyon, famous for her One Woman Shows. Remember how she entranced us with her portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt, well now she will ‘be’ Julia Child. Julia Child was an American cook, author and television personality who introduced French cuisine and cooking techniques to America. Even the chefs of today are in awe of what she was able to accomplish. Linda really IS Julia Child! The hair, makeup, dress, voice and demeanor - all of it. It’s amazing and so much fun to watch. Join us in the ‘old chapel’ at 11:00 a.m. for the rosary. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) will be at 11:30 a.m. in Madonna Hall and ‘Julia Child’ will appear at noon. Please note that the schedule is 1/2 hour earlier than usual.
