Saint Francis of Assisi Saint Francis is perhaps one of the most well-known Catholic saints, being the patron of ecology and animals, with the blessing of animals often taking place on his feast day, the 4th of October.

What is less known in popular culture about the Saint is his early life. He was born into a wealthy family, grew up with money, and worked closely with his father as a cloth merchant. He spent money freely, often partied, and what hardly what we might consider a man of God. When Francis was about 25 years old, he had a conversion of faith after having God speak to him in a dream and hearing the voice of Christ while praying in a derelict chapel in San Damiano (outside of Assisi), renounced his father and his business, and took to living a life a poverty. Francis would preach about penitence, love of neighbor, detachment from worldly possessions, and peace, despite not be ordained. He began to gather followers, and they petitioned the local bishop to be recognized as a Christian Order, which was later informally granted by Pope Innocent III; this was the beginnings of the Franciscan Order.

Less than one month before his death, Francis was praying during a 40-day retreat, when he had a vision of an angel and received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ.

Francis is known for his love and care for the environment and all of creation, peace among all, and was also the first to erect a Nativity Scene for Christmas, using live animals and a straw-filled feeding trough for the infant Jesus, so that worshippers would get a better sense of the humble circumstances through which Christ entered our world.

He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX just two years after his death. Pope Saint John Paul II later named Saint Francis the patron saint of Ecology.

We will be offering a Night at the Movies with a showing of Brother Sun Sister Moon on Friday, October 5, beginning at 7 p.m. in the theater in the Parish Center. The film is a portrayal of the story of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare, and the founding of the Franciscan order. The film was directed by Franco Zeffirelli and was released in 1973. The feast of St. Francis is October 4.

This event also satisfies one of the intergenerational requirements.

CONFIRMANDI Practice for Confirmation will be Sunday, October 14 at 2 pm Either the sponsor or a parent must attend.

Confirmation is Friday, October 19 4:00 pm (Arrival time is EARLIER) Plan to arrive no later than 2:45 pm Madonna Hall.

Candidates, sponsors, and parents gather in Madonna Hall in order to check in, take group pictures, and line up in order to be in the church prior to 3:45 pm. All relatives and friends should plan on being seated in the church prior to 3:45 pm.

During the Rite of Confirmation the bishop and the priests who are administering the sacrament lay their hands upon those who are to be confirmed. It is here that the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit are received ...“ the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.”

First four of the Seven Gifts Wisdom is our ability to value spiritual things over worldly ones. It enables us to desire the things of God and correctly order the things in our life. This gift helps us view the world through God’s perspective and the light of our faith. It instills a desire to contemplate the things of God. Understanding helps us grasp the truths of the faith more easily and profoundly. Our human intellect cannot grasp all of God’s mysteries, but through the gift of understanding we can be led to truth, even when we do not fully comprehend. This gift strengthens our insight through prayer, Counsel/ Right Judgment acknowledges the difference between right and wrong and bestows proper judgment. A person with right judgment avoids sin and leads a life for Christ. Counsel inspires us to speak up and encourage others to do the correct thing. It bestows upon us prudence, allowing us to act promptly and rightly in the face of difficult situations.

Fortitude/Courage sustains our decision to follow the will of God in any situation. It allows us to stand up and defend our faith, even when threatened by bodily injury or death. This gift allows us to be steadfast in our decisions to do well and to endure evil even when we do not want to.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Through our baptismal anointing we truly are prophets (see first reading); all of us are commissioned to speak and do deeds in the Lord’s name. Thus baptism is more than initiation into a group— it is the transformation of ourselves into disciples of Christ who follow the Teacher by faithful service “in [his] name.” As a follower of Christ this means doing something so great as volunteering for one of the liturgical ministries or so simple a task as taking the garbage out without being asked.

The month of October provides us with the opportunity for us to reflect on the life and witness of Saint Francis of Assisi as well as Our Lady of the Rosary. Next weekend we observe Respect Life Sunday. There are many ways in which we show our respect for the dignity of human life. Our sharing of clothes and other essential items, our service at soup kitchens, Chastity Awareness, and certainly our steadfast position against Abortion and the Death Penalty. While these are some of the most difficult issues of our day, let us pray for an openness to God’s will for us in our lives to be faith-filled witnesses, especially concerning the dignity of every human life from conception through natural death.

This weekend we are making presentations regarding our Parish Stewardship at each of the masses. This year we are beginning an increased offertory program to assist us now and into the future to provide for the needs of our parish community. As stakeholders each

of us has a right to this Stewardship of Treasure information as well as the responsibility to continue to fund the essential parish services and ministries. Our annual Stewardship Newsletter is being prepared and is scheduled to be emailed this coming week.

Please read it. It is your right to know this information and the overall condition of our parish. If you are unable to download this newsletter or unable to read it online and require a printed copy just contact the parish office and they will have a copy for you to pick up during regular hours. Should you have questions, please ask one of our trustees or a member of the parish staff.

Many thanks to parishioner Linda DickinsonPancila and her team representing each parish of our Cohort #13 for the great Day of Prayer and Reflection last weekend. I have received a lot of positive feedback from those who participated. Great job. Preparations are underway for our Halloween Halls/Saints and Superheroes intergenerational event as well as the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Please consult the parish bulletin for details. Many thanks to all those who regularly bring non-perishable food items when coming to mass each weekend as well as those who regularly contribute to our fund for Charitable Appeals/ Poor & Needy.

Next weekend we will hear from some parishioners as part of our Increased Offertory Program. I thank them for their willingness to share their experiences and all of our congregants for their attention to their message.

The 2019 Mass Intention Book will open on Tuesday, Oct. 2 Currently, we are accepting appointments for scheduling multiple date specific Mass Intentions within the 2019 year. Appointments dates and times are: Tuesday, October 2, from 5 pm to 7 pm Wednesday, October 3, from 2 pm to 4 pm Thursday, October 4, from 10 am to 12 Noon

Call and speak to a live person to make an appointment (no messages accepted) between 8:30 am –7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday or Sunday 9 am – 12 pm, with the parish office 732-780-2666.

Please complete the form prior to coming to your appointment (please write legibly and provide pronunciation where necessary).

Additional forms are available in the parish office or on the website.

Please be sure to have several options for your desired dates so we can accommodate you properly.

Three (weekend)/ two (weekday) intentions are accepted for all scheduled Masses, except for Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark.

Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled before your appointment and you will be asked to choose another date.

After initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multi-intention form or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a first-come first served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so.

28th ANNUAL LIFE CHAIN The 28th Annual LIFE CHAIN will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 PM on Sunday, October 7, at St. Veronica Church, 4215 Route 9 No, Howell, NJ 07731.
