Choral Anthems What is a choral anthem? What is its place in the liturgy? Where does it come from? An anthem is a song of praise or devotion. Historically speaking, the idea of a choral anthem is relatively modern, but has roots dating back several hundred years. Many Renaissance composers of motets were, in actuality, writing anthems, when the text was written either in praise of God, or drew directly from the scriptures. Many of the well-known surviving ones, such as Palestrina’s Sicut Cervus are settings of psalms. The church rubrics call for the communion chant to begin immediately following the celebrant’s reception of the precious body and blood of Christ. In the extraordinary form of the Mass, the reception of Holy Communion by all ministers and the faithful can take some time. As the prescribed chant would likely be finished before all have received, the singing of this additional music took place. In the ordinary form of the Mass at larger cathedral-style churches, the same issue would present itself and the same remedy be applied. Today, it is common practice at certain High Masses for the choir to offer an anthem (be it ancient, modern or anything in between) after the communion chant has been sung. Think Christmas, Easter, other Solemnities, Feasts and local observances. The liturgical function of this music is to accompany the procession of the faithful to receive Holy Communion. However, this has sometime led to the erroneous expectation of a “Communion Meditation” piece, especially at weddings and funerals, but the key component that is lacking is that of function. When done well in a proper liturgical setting, a choral anthem can have a meditating effect, to be sure, but it serves a purpose. Be on the lookout and give a listen to some choral anthem here in our parish as we approach the last days of Ordinary Time and the holy seasons of Advent and Christmas.

Fall/Winter Mass Schedule Change: The Saturday night 5 pm Mass will move to 4 pm starting Saturday, October 5, 2019. Penance and Reconciliation will move from 4 pm to 3 pm Saturday. (this schedule will run through Palm Sunday Weekend). Please prepare for this adjustment. Note: this schedule change will not include the addition of an evening Sunday Mass. ALL SOULS By the request of some parishioners, we are including an All Souls envelope in our quarterly package. It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection basket anytime beginning October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. Online givers can also send in their All Souls remembrance thru our online giving system at https://bit.ly/2PpGOP0 Thank you for preserving our Catholic traditions and honoring those who have gone before us.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. There is no need to be frightened about eternal life if we daily allow God’s word to guide us in our responses to others. This message parallels what was presented in last Sunday’s gospel-there is an urgency about discipleship. Last Sunday the urgency was depicted in terms of acting prudently; this Sunday the urgency is about listening. In both ways do we prepare for eternal life. God’s word comes to us in more ways than the proclamations at Sunday Mass or taking time to read the Bible-as important as both of those are. God’s word also comes to us through others. It can be presented as someone in need. God’s word might come in some challenge to our self-centeredness or values. It might come through another’s encouragement. In all these ways and countless others we are invited to listen. Listening is a part of the decisiveness of discipleship. Fall has begun. One of the benefits of living in the Mid-Atlantic States is the opportunity to experience Fall weather. Hopefully we will be treated to that glorious transition from Summer into Winter. Take some time to be outside, enjoying a walk or sharing some wine with good friends. As with all things the seasons come and go. Don’t miss out on the beauty of creation God gives us. Preparations are being made for the Blessing of Animals and the Halloween Halls. There are many service projects available for those students who need to log service hours. We continue to refine our staffing and how we continue to exercise oversight, coordinate communication, and call forth greater

participation in serving the needs of our parishioners. THANK YOU for your support and cooperation. Each week I am noticing new faces. Some have come up and introduced themselves others have not. It is so important for us to be a welcoming community. If you notice a new face, introduce yourself. Welcome that person or family to our parish. Our parish can only be as strong as our commitment to see the Face of Christ in the other person. Participating in the Mass each weekend, getting involved in some aspect of parish life, and supporting our parish community through our Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure. I have been advised by the Diocesan Episcopal Vicar for Clergy & Consecrated Life that Richard Gerbino, a bona fide parishioner of our parish, has been accepted into the formation program for the Sacrament of Holy Orders as a Deacon for the Diocese of Trenton. The formation process and discernment is normatively five years prior to petitioning His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton for the Sacrament of Holy Orders as Deacon. Let us remember Rich and his wife Maria and their family as he responds to the call of the Lord to serve the Church. I am grateful to Father Gene for covering Masses last week as I was on a period of holiday enjoying some needed rest. Father Gene will be with us some weekends during the month of October. I am grateful to our parish staff whose oversight in my absence continues the level of service which our parishioners have become accustomed. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

I would like thank you for the beautiful celebration for my 60 years of priesthood that took place at St. Mary's Sunday September 15th. The Mass at 10 and the reception afterwards were expressions of the deep faith and warmth I've experienced over the past 30 years I've come to this parish. I thank God for all of you. One of the saints said "As Christians, we live from feast to feast." You gave me a feast to remember. I'm grateful for your prayers and support and I count you among my blessings. The Martha Mary Guild’s October meeting is traditionally a “triple treat”. New members are inducted with a special ceremony, led by our Pastor, Rev. Jeffrey Lee, or Deacon John. Then there will be a delicious PotLuck Luncheon, to welcome the new members. After the feast is consumed, there is a Fashion Show, with members modeling their “prized possessions” from the September Clothing Sale. Pictured above are members that participated in the 2018 Fashion Show – always so much fun! This year’s meeting will be on Wednesday, Oct. 9, with the rosary in the Spiritual Center Chapel at 11:00 a.m. (Please note the time change.) The Induction Ceremony will take place at 11:30 in Madonna Hall, due to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel. Our Pot- Luck Luncheon will follow. Kindly bring your “culinary creations” to the Madonna Hall kitchen before the rosary. Please Note: “ Holiday Express” has requested socks to distribute to the needy, so the Guild is asking our members to kindly donate socks in all sizes for this worthy cause. Your generosity was overwhelming last year and we hope to do as well again. Remember, all ladies of the parish are invited to participate in this fun-filled day!

Friday, October 11, 2019 at 10 am, 5 pm, & 8 pm Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has giving Unplanned an R (Restricted) rating. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. Contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them. Movie specific details at link below https://imdb.to/2kptuf6 From Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, the writers/coproducers of God’s Not Dead, comes a film that speaks to one of the most polarizing topics of our day. Unplanned brings us an eye-opening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate. After reading Abby Johnson’s best-selling book of the same title, Cary and Chuck were moved to bring this inspiring true story to the big screen, giving voice to a woman who has been on both sides of the abortion conversation. Unplanned is the most important movie you’ll ever see on the most controversial issue of our time. No matter which side of the fence you’re on, no one will leave this film unmoved by Abby’s journey.
