Saint Francis of Assisi Saint Francis is perhaps one of the most well-known Catholic saints, being the patron of ecology and animals, with the blessing of animals often taking place on his feast day, the 4th of October.

What is less known in popular culture about the Saint is his early life. He was born into a wealthy family, grew up with money, and worked closely with his father as a cloth merchant. He spent money freely, often partied, and what hardly what we might consider a man of God. When Francis was about 25 years old, he had a conversion of faith after having God speak to him in a dream and hearing the voice of Christ while praying in a derelict chapel in San Damiano (outside of Assisi), renounced his father and his business, and took to living a life a poverty. Francis would preach about penitence, love of neighbor, detachment from worldly possessions, and peace, despite not be ordained. He began to gather followers, and they petitioned the local bishop to be recognized as a Christian Order, which was later informally granted by Pope Innocent III; this was the beginnings of the Franciscan Order.

Less than one month before his death, Francis was praying during a 40-day retreat, when he had a vision of an angel and received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ.

Francis is known for his love and care for the environment and all of creation, peace among all, and was also the first to erect a Nativity Scene for Christmas, using live animals and a straw-filled feeding trough for the infant Jesus, so that worshippers would get a better sense of the humble circumstances through which Christ entered our world.

He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX just two years after his death. Pope Saint John Paul II later named Saint Francis the patron saint of Ecology.

ALL SOULS By the request of some parishioners, we are including an All Souls envelope in our quarterly package. It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection basket anytime beginning October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings;

A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/ Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see page 4 Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE will be October 31 On Saturday, October 31, 2020, at the 4 pm Mass, our parish will remember in a special way those who have died at Saint Mary during the past year as well any relative you may wish to remember. This Mass is an opportunity for us to assist those who grieve the death of a loved one.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The second reading from the Letter to the Philippians gives us a hint as to how we can hear Jesus’ preaching and respond in faithful obedience: “by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing…regard others as more important than yourselves…”

This is the kingdom perspective—to change our focus from ourselves to others and, in turn, our concern for others helps us focus on God. Jesus himself is the model, for “he emptied himself…becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Nothing was too much for Jesus so that others might be saved.

So it ought to be for us. The “changing of our minds” described in the gospel is a selfemptying for the sake of others, lived every day in the little things that come our way.

Last week we learned of the death of Reverend Fr. Thomas J. Triggs, Fourth Pastor of Saint Mary Parish. He died on his 73rd birthday. He was living in Sayreville, NJ in close proximity to his family. I participated in the Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Victories Parish located in Sayreville. Our Parish of Saint Mary will gather for Mass on Saturday, 26 September 2020 at 11:00 am to thank God for Father Tom’s priestly ministry and to pray for the repose of his soul. I invite you to come

and join us in prayer. I have extended an invitation to the Triggs Family to join us in prayer.

Last Saturday I represented our Parish Community at the dedication of a new playground at Dorbrook Park. This new play area is for sight challenged, blind, and sensory compromised children. The project was overseen by the Lions Club. Mr. Lotano invited me to offer a blessing during the ceremony. Our parish made a contribution to this noble project. Congratulations to the Lions Club on achieving this goal.

Fall is upon us. Shorter days. Cooler temperatures. This year I think it is even more important that we make good choices about our personal comportment…especially how we dress. Generally, layers are a good way as we encounter cool mornings, warmer sunny days, and cool evenings. I know that my allergies are in high gear 4-6 weeks earlier than usual. Take time to listen to your body.

Encourage your children and young people to do so as well. Being pro-active can make a big difference…during the pandemic, as we approach flu season, and allergy season. Just a thought.

Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum are not available for intentions. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark. Stipend can be paid by cash, check, or credit card.

Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled and you will be asked to choose another date.

After initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multi-intention form, on line, or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a first-come first served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so.

First Communion Families, First Communion has been rescheduled for Sunday, October 18th and Sunday, October 25th at the 10 am and 12 pm noon Masses.

Now that the church office is open please feel free to pick up your banner kit if you haven't already done so. You and your child can decorate the banner and bring it in the day of their Communion to display in church. Don't forget to take it home with you as a keep sake at the conclusion of Mass.

Hi every one I hope every one is well and coping with the restrictions on our lives in order to stem the spread of COVID-19. I am sending this notice to all members with the emails provided to me on your application form (2019-2020). Some of you may have requested that your emails NOT be listed in the booklet, with which I have complied. However, we are trying to set up an E-Blast to keep all Martha Mary members informed as to what will happen in the future with regard to MEMBERSHIP, SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, SPIRITUALITY, FUNDRAISING, FINANCES.

Food for Thought: When young couples – or not-so-young couples – prepare for marriage, they enter into a new way of doing just about everything. The mundane chores around the house and shopping become different when you are figuring out how to share the tasks as a married couple. We hear from Saint Paul today, “...complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart…” (Philippians 2: 2). What a great blessing it is for parents to be of the same heart in raising their children. That blessing becomes rooted in the earliest days of marriage, as newlyweds become of one mind and heart, united in sacramental marriage. Rev. James Grogan

Life Chain – Sunday, October 4: The 30th Annual LIFE CHAIN will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 PM on Sunday, October 4 along Route 9 in front of St. Veronica’s rectory in Howell.

LIFE CHAIN is an annual nation-wide event of peaceful and prayerful public witness against abortion and for greater respect for all human life. Pro-life witnesses will be forming a “Life Chain” along Rt. 9 in front of the St. Veronica’s rectory. Signs will be available. Current COVID -19 protocols will be followed.
