Saint Vincent de Paul (memorial: September 27) was a French Roman Catholic priest, who dedicated his life to the service of the poor. He was born in 1581, one of 6 children born to poor, peasant farmers. At age 15 he entered the seminary and was ordained at the young age of 19. He was a proponent of Apostolic Life, particularly for women and those involved in mission work, and was a pioneer in clerical training, believing in the good work that those who dedicated their life to God could do. The well-known Society of Saint Vincent de Paul continues his work of outreach to the poor, first established in 1833, nearly 100 years after his canonization, and operates in 132 countries.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. No wonder Jesus focused his time on the journey to Jerusalem on his disciples—this teaching is so hard to hear! No wonder the disciples do not understand—this teaching is so hard to accept! We are no different from the disciples. How often do we fail to come to Jesus to question him so that we can understand the cost of discipleship? We are afraid to question Jesus about discipleship when we choose the easy way which is not discipleship: when we ignore the plea of others for help; when we only spend time with people in our own inner circle; when we harbor racial, sexual, or religious prejudices; when we…. Last weekend our candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation gathered for a day of prayer and reflection. They concluded their time together by joining us at the Saturday 5:00 pm Mass. Let us pray for these young parishioners, their parents, sponsors and catechists. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered in our parish on Friday, 19 October 2018. Last weekend and this
weekend we are hosting orientations for our religious education students and their parents. Let us continue to encourage these parents as they desire to form their children in our Catholic faith. His Fall our parish is offering a bible study program for men and women We also continue to offer the Walking With Purpose Bible Study for women. Adult Faith Formation is such and important part of our on-going spiritual growth. Check out the information posted in the weekly bulletin. This weekend we will draw the winners for our 2018 Parish Super 50/50. I am grateful to all those who have sold or purchased their tickets. It is another visible way in which we show that we are stakeholders in our parish. We had a few dozen returns that were purchased with Saint Mary Parish name on the stub! Msgr. Troiano is away for a week or so enjoying some holiday and time away from his diocesan responsibilities. Have a great week and let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
