Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org As we continue on towards the end of Ordinary Time, let us look back and remind ourselves what our various musical roles are… What are the roles of the cantor, the choir, and the congregation during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? The role of the congregation is to respond in prayer, both sung and spoken, at the appropriate times during Mass. In the order of the Mass, this means: Entrance Antiphon • Kyrie • Gloria • Affirmations following the readings • Antiphon of the Responsorial Psalm • Acclamation before the Gospel • Sequences• Creed • Preface Dialogue • Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) • Memorial Acclamation • Amen • The Lord’s Prayer • Agnus Dei • Prayer before Communion • Communion Antiphon Affirmations to the Prayer after Communion, Solemn Blessings and dismissal • In addition to above, there is also the singing of hymns or songs. While this is at first glance a daunting list, do remember that the Ordinary remains constant in terms of text, while the musical settings change seasonally. The role of the cantor during Mass is more accurately described as a psalmist. The cantor sings the verses of responsorial psalm, the verse before the Gospel, and the verses of psalms sung during the entrance or communion processions. The cantor also plays a very important role in the liturgies of the Triduum, as the rubrics indicate certain texts and chants to be specifically sung by the cantor, sometimes even indicating the preference that there be two cantors, one male, one female. Many carry the notion that the cantor leads the congregation during the singing of everything else, but this is a half-truth. At Low Masses, those without an organ, the cantor provides the visual and musical cues to the congregation and bolsters their singing. At Masses with an organ, the organist is the true leader of the congregation, and the cantors as we commonly associate them as “song leader” is a luxury, but not a necessity. Try this next time you are at Mass: As the introduction to a piece of music starts, close your eyes or do not otherwise look at the cantor, and if you have a professional organist you will know when to start singing, at what tempo, and as the music continues, you will know whether or not the verse you are on is the final one. The role of the choir is two-fold. The first is to bolster the congregational singing, but to do so in a more refined and elegant manner; singing in many voice parts instead of unison, and adding descants and countermelodies as indicated by the composer. The second is to sing the parts of the Mass or other selections not designed for congregational singing. This includes, but is not limited to, the singing of a polyphonic motet, hymn or other devotional piece before Mass, or following the Communion chant. A well-rehearsed choir can elevate mood of the worship environment and at certain times of the year it is of utmost necessity to have a robust choir!

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Although we tend to be a throw-away society that squanders freely our resources, we also are squanderers in another sense that has far more serious consequences. When it comes to paschal mystery living, we often squander opportunities to gain “true wealth.” The thrust of the gospel is that we act prudently in this life in order to be “welcomed into eternal dwellings.” Prudence demands that we not squander opportunities to be charitable and just toward others. Prudence demands that we not squander opportunities to die to self. Prudence demands that we not squander opportunities to be trustworthy with the ministry of discipleship which we take on each time we say yes to our baptismal commitment. Most of us are serious about our paschal mystery living. We honestly try to live good lives. When opportunities present themselves to act in a Christian way, most of us respond appropriately most of the time. This gospel challenges us to take this one step further. Paschal mystery living isn’t simply a matter of surrendering to the self-sacrificing possibilities that come our way, usually in the normal course of daily living. With an eye to the future, we must also surrender ourselves to actually searching out opportunities to live the paschal mystery. There is such an urgency about discipleship and proclaiming the good news of salvation that we cannot be passive in any way. Just as Jesus did all he needed to do to make his message known, even when that led to Jerusalem and the cross, so must we be as proactive in our own Discipleship. This weekend we welcome Father Evarist who is with us for the Mission Cooperative
sponsored by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith of our Catholic Church. Father comes to us to invite our support for his home Diocese of Kasana-Luweero Uganda. Father has been serving our Diocese of Trenton for more than a decade and currently is assigned to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Whiting, Ocean County. Thank you for welcoming Father Evarist to our parish community and for your generous support of his appeal. There continues to be a weekly increase in our support of the poor and needy through nonperishable food donations. Items should be placed in the large grey bin is in our church gathering space. There is always a need for cereal, peanut butter, and jelly. As you shop this week please pick up an item or two to share with those most in need. Also, we will once again ask your generous support for the Thanksgiving & Christmas Food Drives as well as the various Christmas Gift Giving Programs sponsored by our parish. Thank you for your kind and generous sharing. I thank our parishioners who have signed up for the Sunday Stewardship Offering ON LINE. I have been told that the number of families participating has more than doubled since midJuly 2013. This is a great assistance since it is very efficient and provides for the highest safety and security. Also, thanks to our parishioner families who have been away for part of or most of the summer months and have turned in back envelopes with their offerings. This is a great help to us as we continue our operation of service throughout the year. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
