Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org Ordinary Time III (Autumn) The third and final portion of Ordinary Time occurs in the Autumn months, following the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14. It is a busy time of year in both the liturgical and civic calendars.

Beginning with the Exaltation of the Cross and concluding with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe only 10 weeks later, this season also includes: The Solemnity of All Saints, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, our annual Ecumenical Service with the Colts Neck Reformed Church, and the Sacrament of Confirmation in our parish.

The liturgical color of the vestments remains green, but a keen eye will notice a different shade, in line with the changing of the colors in the natural world around us.

Toward the end of this season, there is a shift in the tone of the Sunday readings towards the end of time. More on that and how it relates to the coming season of Advent another time‌ Here in our parish, the musical setting of the Mass changes to Tony Alonso’s Mass for Joy & Peace. This is a modern setting, incorporating mildly syncopated rhythms, a verse/refrain style Gloria, and a very simple harmonic structure.

We also add the singing of a hymn or song after the conclusion of Mass, while the clergy and other ministers recess.

The 2019 Mass Intention Book will open on Tuesday, Oct. 2 Currently, we are accepting appointments for scheduling multiple date specific Mass Intentions within the 2019 year. Appointments dates and times are: Tuesday,

October 2, from 5 pm to 7 pm Wednesday, October 3, from 2 pm to 4 pm Thursday, October 4, from 10 am to 12 Noon Call and speak to a live person to make an appointment (no messages accepted) between 8:30 am –7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday or Sunday 9 am – 12 pm, with the parish office 732-780-2666.

Please complete the form on the reverse side prior to coming to your appointment (please write legibly and provide pronunciation where necessary).

Additional forms are available in the parish office or on the website.

Please be sure to have several options for your desired dates so we can accommodate you properly.

Three (weekend)/ two (weekday) intentions are accepted for all scheduled Masses, except for Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated.

The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark.

Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled before your appointment and you will be asked to choose another date.

After initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multiintention form or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a firstcome, first-served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so.

Sanctuary Lamps Consider donating the Sanctuary Lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Christ Chapel in memory of a loved one who has died or to honor a living person.

These intentions are on a weekly basis starting with the Sunday, therefore a new request will be published each week in the bulletin.

There will be a total of 104 Sanctuary Lamp Intentions: 52 weeks of the year for each of the Christ Chapel & Church lamps. The suggested donation for a Sanctuary Lamp is $25.

We will be offering a Night at the Movies with a showing of Brother Sun Sister Moon on Friday, October 5, beginning at 7 p.m. in the theater in the Parish Center. The film is a portrayal of the story of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare, and the founding of the Franciscan order. The film was directed by Franco Zeffirelli and was released in 1973. The feast of St. Francis is October 4.

This event also satisfies one of the intergenerational requirements.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Our denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following Jesus is not about a dramatic martyrdom like in the early Church, nor about any great, showy response. Rather it is about how we live every single day: dying and rising in our everyday simple circumstances. For example, we must die to our way of thinking (taking the easy way of self-seeking, selfgratification, self-interest) and embrace how God thinks (carrying the cross of goodness, righteousness, justice, integrity, wholeness, fullness of life). For our reflection this week: Where does following Jesus lead you? What gives you hope and consolation when faced with suffering? Are you willing to look at the dark side of yourself and do the hard work to change?

Last week (T-W-R) all of the active diocesan priests, religious priests serving in our diocese, and those retired priests who are interested, gathered for our annual convocation. It is a time for us to come together with our diocesan bishop to consider some aspect of our priestly life or the life of our local church…the diocese. Some years this gathering focuses on spirituality and ministry, other years it can be a topic that is more of a practical nature. There is time for communal prayer, the Eucharist, penance & reconciliation as well as catching up with one another and getting to know the more recently ordained priests.

This year we will be receiving presentations regarding an upcoming

diocesan-wide planning process. There will be information shared as well as time for discussion and sharing to help those responsible assist the Most Reverend Bishop. I thank you for your prayer for the priests of our diocese that our hearts, minds and spirits will be open to the prompting of God’s grace in our midst.

Thank you for your prayerful presence last Sunday as we gathered in prayer for the victims and survivors of those who have experienced sexual abuse as well as for the purification of our church. I pray each and every day for victims who continue to struggle. We must continue to pray and work for an end to this abuse from within our church and in our world.

We continue to make progress with our 2018 Parish Super 50/50 Raffle. Thank you for your generous support. If you have not made your returns, please do so this week. This is a very important part of our parish budget at this time in our history. Please do your fair share! The drawing will be part of this month’s Agape.

Additionally, I have been informed of the responsible stewardship of so many who have been away during the summer months and have made their stewardship offerings to cover those weeks while away. Thank you for recognizing that your giving is necessary to properly operate our parish and fulfill our obligations. Together, we continue to provide what is needed for our parish and the ministries/services that we are able to offer. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. The above is the website description of the next musical that the Martha Mary Guild is sponsoring on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Tony nominees, Irene Sankoff & David Hein collaborated on this remarkable tale. The director, Christopher Ashley, is an accomplished Tony winner. Newsweek is quoted as saying: “It takes you to a place you never want to leave”. NY Times critic Ben Brantley, called it “the big bearhug of a musical”.
