Ordinary Time III (Autumn) Ordinary Time is divided into two parts. The first portion occurs after the end of the Christmas Season and the Baptism of the Lord. Ordinary Time is then interrupted by the seasons of Lent and Easter. It resumes following the Solemnity of Pentecost at the end of the Easter Season. This second “half” is much larger than the first and some communities place a division within this portion. As the title of this article suggest, this last part of Ordinary Time occurs in the Autumn months, following the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14. It is a busy time of year in both the liturgical and civic calendars. Beginning with the Exaltation of the Cross and concluding with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe only 10 or 11 weeks later, this season also includes: The Solemnity of All Saints, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, our annual Ecumenical Service with the Colts Neck Reformed Church, and the Sacrament of Confirmation in our parish. The liturgical color of the vestments remains green, but a keen eye will notice a different shade, in line with the changing of the colors in the natural world around us. Toward the end of this season, there is a shift in the tone of the Sunday readings towards the end of time. This section of readings from about the 30th week onward are referred to as the “last weeks (or days) of Ordinary Time” referring both to the content of the readings and the more literal nature of the season coming to an end. Here in our parish, the musical setting of the Mass changes to Tony Alonso’s Mass

This is a modern setting, incorporating mildly syncopated rhythms, a verse/refrain style Gloria, and a very simple harmonic structure. We also add the singing of a hymn or song after the conclusion of Mass, while the clergy and other ministers recess. We also mark the glorious occasion of the Solemnity of Christ the King with a Mass with full choir, organ, handbells and brass.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If God is so compassionate and loving with us, then as faithful disciples of Jesus we must risk being so compassionate and loving with others. First of all, this means that we don’t judge whether the other is worth our compassion and love. God shows us that all areeven outcasts and sinners. Second, we don’t earn compassion and love. Since it is a free gift of God to us, it is a gift we freely give to others. We don’t wait until someone wrongs us to show compassion and love-we offer these gifts simply because the other is a beloved of God. It’s much easier for us to be compassionate and loving when the end situation is better for us. For example, we might forgive a family member some wrong-doing because we want peace in the family. It is far more risky to be compassionate when there is no immediate gain for us in sight. As disciples we are called to be compassionate simply because this is the way Jesus was. Living the paschal mystery means that we feast well and often, because we realize that God “hugs” us with compassion and love without calculating whether we deserve it or not. This weekend we gather at the 10:00 am Mass to thank almighty God for the gift of the priesthood as we honor Father Victor Hoagland, CP. The celebration of the Mass is the central part of the priests’ spiritual life. We are very grateful to Fr. Victor for generously sharing his priesthood with our parish community for these many years. We have prepared a reception in the parish hall so that you might greet Fr. Victor personally. Let us continue to honor our priests and pray that God will continue to send more priests into the vineyard of the Church.
This weekend we welcome parents and children participating in our Parish Religious Education Program. During the summer months we offered two modules serving 260 children. During the Fall, Winter, & Spring months we offer Confirmation Preparation for grades 7&8; online learning for grades 3, 4, 5, 6; First Penance/First Communion Preparation for grades 1 & 2 who do not participate in the summer program. We offer many options to assist families to share our Catholic Faith with their children. We continue to offer intergenerational opportunities throughout the year. All of this is predicated upon regular participation in Sunday Mass. Learning about our Catholic Faith without participating in Sunday Mass, the most important part of our Catholic Identity, sends mixed messages especially to the children. It is my hope that our parish will continue to offer the very best so that families will want to participate in Sunday Eucharist and all that our parish has to offer. Next weekend, we welcome Father Evarist, a priest of the Diocese of Kasana-Luwero Uganda who has been serving in our Diocese of Trenton for more than a decade. Many of you may have encountered him as he served many years as the Catholic Chaplain at Jersey Shore Medical Center. Father Evarist will be with us as the presider and homilist for all of the weekend Masses as our parish participates in the Society for the Propagation of the Faith Mission Cooperative. A second collection will be taken during all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your generosity in supporting the Catholic Missions throughout the world. Have a great week. Evarist Kabagambe grew up in Uganda, East Africa. He is a priest in the Diocese of KasanaLuweero, Uganda, which he will be representing for the mission appeal. Fr. Kabagambe currently serves in this diocese of Trenton.
