Ordinary Time III Liturgy, Music, and Sacraments As we move into the third portion of Ordinary Time towards the end of the liturgical year, we will experience some changes to our celebrations, especially during this time of the pandemic.

First, a few reminders: Please maintain physical distance on all sides between your family and others when you choose a pew. We are currently operating with a 1/3 capacity so there is plenty of room for all. There are chairs available in the narthex for additional spaced seating should anyone feel the need, as well as the seating near the tabernacle. All are required to sanitize their hands and wear face coverings in the church building and people have done a great job with this. Kudos!

I did not say to forgive seven times but seventy times seven.

Our young people will receive their First Holy Communion during the month of October, as we were unable to celebrate this sacramental milestone in the spring. These Masses are more highly attended, but we will continue to comply with the protocols that have been set.

We will also have our parish celebration of the conferral of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Due to the number of candidates involved, attendance has been limited.

The Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults, normally observed at the Easter Vigil, will be celebrated on All Saints Day. This a truly joyous occasion for those who elect to become a Catholic!

Our annual Mass of Remembrance is schedule for October 31st, at which we remember those from our parish community who have entered into eternal life in the past year.

We have many baptisms scheduled during these next few months. In order to accommodate our families and maintain our sanitation procedures, they occur in the parish hall chapel with smaller numbers of immediate family in attendance. Fresh baptismal water is used for each child, and the use of the chapel allows for a thorough yet expedient sanitation process after each celebration.

Our broadcast Mass for Sundays will continue for the foreseeable future.

At this time, congregational singing is still discouraged but not prohibited. As has been our custom, beginning with the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14, our musical setting of the Ordinary will change to the Mass of Joy and Peace by Tony Alonso. This modern setting has several short refrains throughout, which foster familiarity among the assembly. The chanting of the propers for entrance and communion continues, as this is the preferred option according to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. At certain celebrations, a hymn may be equally appropriate, and there will be the addition of an offertory hymn when an appropriate one may be found.

Hymnals and other paper items are not to be in the pews, and we imagine this will remain the directive for some time (as well as the passing of the collection baskets replaced with the deposit method). Worship Aids for the Broadcast Masses are available online, but may also be used for in-church celebration, ideally viewed on a mobile device. We are also in the process of compiling digital worship aids for every day of the week with the advent of new software from one of the Catholic publishers, again ideally viewed via a mobile device. This will aid in the recitation of the Creed on Sundays, and provide the text of readings and responses for those who may find those useful during Mass.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the

Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity.

Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and

side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see page 4 Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

For all parishioners: Congregating before and after Mass is prohibited, as per the bishop. There will be no children’s liturgy of the word dismissal. Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday).

We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. At weekday Masses, no one is to arrive prior to 8:30 AM. All Masses will be in the Chapel in the Parish Hall. Exposition remains suspended for now. Private adoration of the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle is welcomed and encouraged at any time.

The church office is open again, please feel free to pick up your banner kit if you haven't already done so.

You and your child can decorate the banner and bring it in the day of their Communion to display in church. Don't forget to take it home with you as a keep sake at the conclusion of Mass.

The rehearsals will be as follows: Wed, Oct 14 at 5pm for the 10/18 10am ceremony Wed, Oct 14 at 6pm for the 10/18 12pm ceremony Wed, Oct 21 at 5pm for the 10/25 10am ceremony Wed, Oct 21 at 6pm for the 10/25 12pm ceremony Please arrive promptly at rehearsal. Your child should attend with one parent only. We will be reviewing how to receive the Eucharist and the children will practice with the unconsecrated host.

Orientations for Fall 2020-2021 We understand that these are uncertain times but we will be moving forward as best we can and will remain flexible with this upcoming school year.

First and second graders will be meeting in the church every Tuesday at the early session from 4:30-5:40pm or the late session from 5:50pm7pm. The first class will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. All protocols of social distancing will be followed, temperatures will be taken upon arrival and masks will be worn.

Our third through sixth graders will be participating in the online program through MY FAITH DELIVERED. If you have not yet received your login information, please contact the parish office.

We will have two orientation options for all parents and children in the religious education program. Come to Mass on one of the following days and there will be an orientation directly following the service. We will be following all protocols set in place at our parish. Please let us know which Mass you will attend:

We are asking all parents to consider volunteering this year as we will need more help than usual. As well as teachers for 1st and 2nd grade, we are in need of hall monitors that can also take temperatures upon arrival. 7th & 8th Grade Families Schools are continuing to update plans for reopening and the Diocese of Trenton has released its Guidelines to Planning Religious Education. Unlike mathematics, science and language arts, Religious education is a faith sharing experience. The Parish of St. Mary believes the in person model is the most effective way to accomplish educating the student in their Catholic faith. However, addressing concerns of parents and in commitment to the faith while offering the best realistic option we will be offering a different model for the school year 2020-2021.

The entire 7th grade population will be moving to a live remote model. There will be only one section of this option and it will be conducted in Google Classroom format. You may choose this format or those families that would prefer an in person educational format may elect to defer their child’s enrollment at this time.

The 8th grade will become a Confirmation Intensive program. You will have two options. We will offer an in person option immediately following the 12:00 Sunday Mass. We will be adhering to best practices and guidelines put in place to mitigate risk. Social distancing, masks, hand sanitizing, extra cleaning will all be part of these practices. Our rooms are equipped with a fully functional HVAC system that circulates fresh air in addition to having windows that can be opened. The second option will be 5:00 pm live remote option. Your child is currently registered for whichever group you chose at the time of registration.

If you would like to switch from one group to the other or choose to defer your child’s enrollment at this time, please contact us at Reregistration@stmaryscoltsneck.org. If you do not contact us we will keep you in your previously scheduled section. If you opt for deferment of enrollment at this time we ask that you provide your reasons so we know how best to proceed to accommodate this group.

We are still looking for volunteers to serve in the following capacity: 

Faith Sharing Leaders – Responsible for facilitating faith sharing conversations among a small group within the larger session. Must be a faith filled, active and practicing Catholic. High school students who are active and alive in their faith are welcome.  Hall Monitors/non-contact temperature takers – Responsible for reminding students to adhere to best practices. High school students are welcome.  Cleaners – Responsible for assisting in wiping down surfaces at the end of class. (Gloves provided).

We aim for a model that is realistic and still provides the faith connection. If you have not previously replied kindy reply ASAP to YouthRE@stmaryscoltsneck.org if you have interest in volunteering.

Having reviewed the guidelines with careful consideration and prayerful discernment, and in response to parental requests, the Faith Formation team, staff, Pastoral Council, and administration came to this best realistic option. It is not perfect. We are not striving for perfection but for a way to educate and connect to the families in our Catholic faith community in a way that addresses the concerns without shirking the responsibility of forming people of deep and lasting faith. We have taken the steps to make this program more convenient for you during this time of heightened anxiety. It is our hope that you will take the requirements of the program seriously and with intention of building the people of God. We will do our part and pray for you as you do yours.

Confirmation 2020 Candidates: Rehearsal Saturday, October 17 - 4 pm Mass immediately following a practice. If possible, the sponsor should be present for the practice. However, a parent can stand in for the sponsor.

Sacrament of Confirmation Friday, October 23, at 4 pm. Due to restrictions on the number of people allowed in our Church at one time, attendance will be limited to the candidate, his/her sponsor, and you, the parents.

We will have a professional photographer present. As we have done in past years, the candidates will gather in Madonna Hall beginning at 3 pm, while the parents and sponsors find their assigned seating in the Church. We intend to have a group photo taken in Madonna Hall with the candidates very briefly removing their masks for the photo.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The second reading for this Sunday speaks in its own way of the paschal mystery and also of why we forgive one another. “None of us lives for oneself” because we “live for the Lord.” Our relationship to each other is described in terms of our relationship to God. Christ’s dying and rising models for us our own dying and rising. Forgiving is dying to damaged relationships so that we might all belong to the Lord. Forgiving means God has hold of us and enables us to act in a God-like manner.

This week, Friday, 11 September we celebrated Mass in the Church as we commemorated those who perished. We remember family members, friends, parishioners, and first responders who sacrificed their lives to rescue others. Let us also pray for those in law enforcement today who are not being supported as well as all those who risk their lives in service to others during this pandemic.

Orientations have been scheduled for our parish Religious Education Programs and Sacramental Programs. Our Pastoral Coordinator for Worship has outlined some of the upcoming events in the weekly bulletin. Take a moment to open it and learn more of what is happening in our parish. Let us continue to pray for and support our young people and their families as they learn more about our Catholic Faith.

families. All are concerned for the safety and welfare of students, faculty and administrators. I received a phone call from the Reverend Msgr Joseph N. Rosie, recently appointed pastor of Saint James, Red Bank, inquiring if our parish would be willing to serve as a regional site for students at Saint James Elementary and Red Bank Catholic High School students to catch the bus each morning. I offered the north side of the parking lot for this purpose each day in the am and again in the pm. The respective staff persons were to figure out the details. We all need to work together for the good of our students and their families.

The 2021 Mass Intention Book will open in a few weeks. We are trying to make this process as simple as possible for all involved. Please carefully read the instructions and follow them so that we might accommodate as many requests as possible. The offering of mass intentions is part of our catholic liturgical practice as well as our customary in praying for the repose of the souls of our beloved dead on the day of their death or birth. Intentions for the living may also be offered and are listed as such. Consider offering mass intentions for the deceased members of your family. Mass cards are available online for your convenience as you experience the death of family members, friends or colleagues. This is a wonderful support of prayer for the deceased and their survivors.

Have you considered making your IRA Required Minimum Distribution to the Parish of St. Mary If you are over the age of 70 1/2 and have a traditional IRA and /or a Roth IRA, your required minimum distribution can be directed to St. Mary Parish as a “qualifying charitable distribution”. The requirements include the following: 

The Charitable distribution must be from a traditional IRA or Roth IRA.

The charitable distribution must be direct from the IRA trustee to St. Mary Parish.



The charitable contribution must be on or after you have reached the age of 70 1/2. The maximum annual exclusion for qualified charitable distribution is $100,000.

Fall 2020 The New Day - Bereavement Support Group held by - Ministry of Consolation Invites You…to participate in a nine week program for those who are grieving the death of loved ones and want to work through the tasks of grief in a structured way using the New Day Journal, A Journey from Grief to Healing. The sessions include readings, reflection, sharing and journaling.

Food for Thought: Forgiveness is essential for successful marriages, as is the humility to ask for forgiveness. When we think of the vows shared in the Order of Celebrating Matrimony, we commit to better and worse, to good times and bad. When we make a mistake that is “the bad” or the “worse” moments. They are part of the whole package of a lifelong commitment, and making that lifelong commitment work and grow takes the humility and courage to ask for forgiveness, to say we are sorry.

Jesus’ response of “seventy-seven times” is meant to imply offering an unlimited forgiveness; you could remember three times, or even seven times. But Seventy-Seven? It instructs us to not only to forgive, but to forget, and not to keep count. Forgiveness is rooted in love, and the love of God is unlimited. Rev. James Grogan
