So too the priest, as he celebrates the Mass. But there are also those things which go unspoken; the gestures we make during the Mass.

The first, last, and most common gesture is the sign of the cross. Done while blessing ourselves with holy water upon entering a church or chapel, at the very beginning and end of Mass (Mass begins and ends with the sign of the cross), before the Gospel, and at other sacramental times (baptism, confirmation, anointing, etc), as well as when blessing a person or object. The gesture invokes the trinity, and is common to many Christian traditions, not only Catholicism.

Genuflection, technically meaning to kneel, is commonly done on one knee, upon entering a pew (often accompanied with the sign of the cross) and before the Blessed Sacrament. Originally a sign of respect practiced in front of nobility in the ancient Persian empire, this has been carried over into many royal courts as well as the church. Genuflection on both knees is common, and in most countries, expected, during the consecration. Additionally, kneeling during the creed, at the words recalling the incarnation, is practiced at Masses for Christmas and the Annunciation of the Lord. The celebrant also genuflects after consecrating both species of the Eucharist. On Palm Sunday and Good Friday, we kneel after the point in the Passion narrative where Jesus breathes his last.

Folding hands for prayer is a custom that has several possible origins - one belief is that ancient Jews folded their hands while praying, which carried over into Christian traditions. Another possibility is the Roman tradition of clasping one’s hand to indicate submission.

The orans posture, that of the hands held out, palms turned upward, but elbows close to the body, is used by the celebrant at several times while praying during the liturgy. The gesture symbolically opens the body to receiving the grace of God. The simplest gesture, bowing, is done at the name of Jesus Christ, a sign of respect and reverence. In some cultures, it is also customary to bow (and remove one’s hat) while passing a church. During Mass, we also bow during those words which recall the incarnation during the creed.

Sanctuary Lamps Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Christ Chapel. These intentions are on a weekly basis starting with the Sunday.

The suggested donation for Sanctuary Lamp is $25.

Appointments dates and times are:  Monday, September 16, 2019 from 4 pm – 7 pm Tuesday, September 17, 2019 from 10 am – 12 noon AND 2 pm – 4 pm Call and speak to a live person to make an appointment (no messages accepted) between 8:45 am –7:30 pm, Monday & Tuesday, 8:45 am - 6 pm, Wednesday & Thursday, or Sunday 9 am – 12 pm, with the parish office 732-780-2666.

Please complete the form on the reverse side prior to coming to your appointment (please write legibly and provide pronunciation where necessary).

Please be sure to have several options for your desired dates so we can accommodate you properly.

Two intentions are accepted for weekday Masses and three intentions are accepted for weekend Masses, except for Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark. Stipends can be paid by cash, check, or credit card.

Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled before your appointment and you will be asked to choose another date.

After initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multi-intention form or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a first-come first served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so.

CONFIRMANDI Those receiving Confirmation October 18th RETREAT: Sunday, September 22, 2019 Confirmandi will have a retreat that starts with parents and students attending the 12 noon Mass.

Afterwards the retreat continues with the Confirmandi & accompanying adult (parent or sponsor) until 4:30 pm.

Confirmation Practice is October 6 starting with parents, students, & sponsors attending the 12 noon Mass.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Humility isn’t a matter of beating our breast or putting ourselves down. Humility is recognizing that we are gifted, enriched, and nourished

by God and then reaching out to others in the same way. If we wish God to raise us up (“repaid at the resurrection of the righteous”) then we must live out lives raising others up. Each Sunday we are invited to God’s banquet table. We ourselves are nourished at the same time that we are called to share the abundance of God’s life by reaching out to others in need. We eat and drink in order to be gracious to others. This is the most profound humility!

Members of the Martha Mary Group are busy preparing for the annual clothing drive to benefit their charities. The ladies work very hard and the charities they support are grateful for their continued efforts. Why not take a look in all of the closets in your home and do a little cleaning out, especially all of those clothes that no longer fit…they are too big. Don’t forget to visit the sale. Dates and times are posted in the bulletin.

The Labor Day Civic Observance provides us an opportunity to reflect on and give thanks for the gift of human labor. Our Catholic Church has a long and

distinguished history in advocating for just working conditions and compensation. We will gather for Mass on Labor Day at 9 am in the Church. Come and join us giving thanks for all of the employment options our country has and for the continued safety of all workers.

Please join us on Sunday, 15 September at the 10:00 am Mass to give thanks to almighty God for 60 years of priestly ministry lived out by Father Victor Hoagland, CP. Father Victor is a member of the Religious Community known as the Passionists. He has been assisting here in Colts Neck for some 30 years. Coming to us first from South River, then Union City and the past years from Jamaica Queens, NY. Father Victor has been a constant for our parish community serving with 4 different pastors here in 07722. We will offer a light reception in the Parish Hall so that you may greet Father Victor and offer thanks for the service he gives to our parish.

As we begin the month of September let us pray for all those who embrace the vocation of teaching. May they be role models for their students and collaborators with parents in educating and forming young people.

St. Bede the Venerable Parish in Holland, PA Fourth Annual Padre Pio Festival Festival is honored to exhibit for all pilgrims the private collection of relics of Padre Pio, which are normally housed in the Philadelphia Monastery of the Carmelite Sisters. The collection includes Padre Pio’s glove, tunic, blood particles from his stigmata, and a cushion he used to kneel when praying for the sick.

Special Masses will be held on Saturday evening, September 14, and again on Sunday, September 15.
