Thank you to Sr. Lisa Valentini, MSC for bringing the parishioners of St Mary Parish such a dynamic, wonderful, faith filled and prayerful parish mission on October 21-25, 2017. Sr. Lisa shared her life and experiences as a missionary sister as well as her love in the Lord with us. She was armed with handouts and plenty of stories.

She inspired attendees of all ages to grow in their love for Jesus Christ and reminded everyone that God really loves each one of us!! Sr. Lisa spoke at all Masses on Saturday and Sunday Oct 21/22, after daily Mass and in the evenings on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, with individuals per appointment and met with Religious Education on Tuesday.

And encourages all to set aside an area in your room or home for a prayer with special items.

Quo vadis‌ My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Everything in our life falls into place if we never lose sight of what is to be our primary relationship and behavior: love God above all others and all else. If we keep our sight on this primary relationship, not only do our relationships with each other fall into place, but the humility that makes a disciple of Jesus is not seen as something artificially tacked on, but as the natural outgrowth of our priorities.

When the order of our relationships is awry on the other hand, our life easily and quickly becomes embroiled in jealousy, power games, and other such behavior. One way the dying to self that paschal mystery living entails is apparent by being a servant of others. This puts title, position, wealth into perspective; all is at the service of the good of others. The new life we might experience by such living takes the form of others respecting us not because of title but because of the genuine goodness of who we are.

The month of November is a time when we celebrate the Communion of Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls. In our Catholic Theology we venerate the saints as examples of holy living, as witness to the faith and as models for our time. Often we tend to remove these women and men from the challenges of their own time; however, we must be conscious of the fact that they too were challenged to make choices in their lives and we remember them for the life-giving choices that they have made. Our Church has consistently taught that our veneration of the saints is not the same as our worship of the Triune God, especially in the Sacraments of the Church and most notably the Holy

Eucharist. Adoration (latria in the latin) is reserved for our adoration of God. The intercessory prayer or veneration of the saints differs from our worship of God who is not contained in human form or matter. It is in this context that we are also called to pray for the Holy Souls. It is an important distinction for us to remember that we need to pray for those who have died that they may one day receive their eternal reward in the Kingdom of Heaven. This belief distinguishes Roman Catholics from other Christians. That is why we offer Mass intentions when we celebrate Eucharist.

Many thanks to all those who were involved in this year’s Halloween Halls. There were a lot of smiling children racing through our parish buildings. This weekend we welcome those families who have buried a loved one in the past year. This Mass of Remebrance is one way in which we support these families in their time of grief. I am grateful to those who serve in our parish Lazarus Ministry as well as the Bereavement Support Group. These ministries are another way in which we reach out to our parishioners in their time of need with support that is rooted in our Catholic Faith.

This weekend I am in Washington DC overseeing our Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. We are anticipating between 1,800-2,000 pilgrims from our diocese. Please remember these pilgrims and their intentions in your prayer. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

A Veterans Day Tribute by the Martha Mary Guild In honor of Veterans Day, a special program presented by Barbara Schaflin, Program Co-Chair, will focus on intimate portraits of America’s military families.

More than two million men and women serve in America’s all-volunteer military force, and another three million are their husbands, wives, sons, and daughters.

THE HOMEFRONT, (a documentary developed by The Documentary Group, and funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, The Boeing Company, and the Steven & Alexandria Cohen Foundation), creates a series of intimate portraits – following families through the difficulties of deployment, the homecoming, and the challenges of reintegrating as a family after many months apart.

Excerpts from this revealing documentary, presented by Bob Woodruff, tells stories of pride and patriotism, sacrifice, and resilience. Viewers will meet a cross-section of America’s military community: Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen, some in the active duty force, and some in the National Guard and Reserve.

Come to the Martha Mary Guild meeting - members and non- members welcomed - 12:30 in Madonna Hall, 8 November 2017. The rosary will be prayed for all veterans in the Spiritual Center Chapel at 11:30. “Light Up a Memory” “Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary and is now in its 10th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in St. Mary’s Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation.

There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 16, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir.

Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 7.

SEPARATED AND DIVORCED CATHOLICS Wondering how you will survive Thanksgiving and Christmas? A re you dreading these holidays, knowing that everything has changed and that happy memories from past years can’t be recreated? Our Surviving the Holidays seminar is especially for people who ar e separated and divorced. You’ll learn how to deal with the many emotions you will face, helpful tips for surviving social events, ways to give your kids a good holiday experience and how to discover hope for your future. Two seminars will be offered. You can attend one or both, as they will be slightly different. They are scheduled as follows: Wednesday, November 15th and Wednesday, December 13th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Chur ch of the Nativity, Parish Hall, First Floor, 180 Ridge Road in Fair Haven. The Parish of Saint Mary provides turkeys along with the non-perishable food. Due to lack of freezer space we ask for monetary donations towards the purchase of turkeys. Therefore, in lieu of donating turkeys or gift cards, please make your check payable to “The Parish of Saint Mary” & put ‘Thanksgiving Food Drive’ in the memo section.

Your contribution will be used for turkeys or additional canned goods if needed.

Help us exceed last year's donations of 145 bags of groceries and 130 turkeys to greater serve the needs of the community at large.
