Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org Allhallowtide All Hallow’s Eve The vigil of All Saints’ Day, All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween, has its roots in the older Christian traditions of holding vigils on the evening prior to a Holy Day in the Church. After a vigil service, worshipers would visit a cemetery and light candles or lay flowers in anticipation of the coming days. In some cultures, there was a belief that on this evening, the veil between the living and the dead was weak, and people would don masks and costumes so that a departed soul would not recognize them, hence the beginnings of trick-or-treating. All Saints’ Day The Solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation, is the day when the church celebrates all the Saints and Martyrs, including those unknown, and honors the Church Triumphant (saints and others who have entered the Kingdom of Heaven) The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Commonly known as All Souls’ Day, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed is a Roman Catholic observance, in which the living faithful pray for the faithful departed who have not yet attained their heavenly reward, as their souls are purified in purgatory. Many churches, including our own, hold Mass on this day in memory of those who have died in the past year, and it is customary to visit the graves of loved ones following Mass, and to pray for the happy repose of their souls. Andrew J. Macirowski, Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist

The infancy narratives are arguably the most beautiful and intriguing passages in the Gospels. Within these narratives we encounter the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in miniature. Journey with us as Dr. Jim Bridges guides us through an exploration of the compositions casting light on their theological purpose. From the child in the manger to the Magi’s search for the infant Jesus, the evangelists create two unique narratives that reveal the importance of Jesus of Nazareth. Come experience the narratives that captured our imagination for nearly 2000 years. All Communion Prep. 2nd Graders (Including Summer) Religious Education Families - Penance & Reconciliation Rehearsal and Lottery On Tuesday, November 6, at 6 pm in Madonna Hall, we will be having an important meeting for all 2nd graders and their parents. This includes all of our summer students and our current students in our Tuesday classes. Our Tuesday grade 2 students will not be having their normal classes that day. The 2nd graders will be receiving their First Penance on December 9 during the parish's Advent Penance & Reconciliation Service. Our meeting on November 6 is meant to prepare all of us for that day. In addition, at this meeting we will be holding our First Communion lottery. This is the mechanism we use to schedule the children for the time of their reception of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Our First Communion ceremonies for 2019 will occur on May 5 and 12 at the 10 am and 12 noon Masses. We are aware that May 12 is Mother's Day, but the late date for Easter in 2019 pushed us into May. NOTE: Your attendance to this event is Mandatory. In order to participate in the Lottery, a parent or designated proxy must be present. If neither is present, the child will be placed in an available spot after the lottery has been concluded. Dr. Jim Bridges Pastoral Coordinator of Faith Formation & Religious Education November 6 the 1st grade Tuesday students will have class as usual.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the immediacy of our everyday lives we do not see our specific choices as determining how we spend eternity. We tend to think of all our choices in the same vein as choosing a TV channel or ice cream—whatever is good for us is a right choice. But this in general and the gospel in particular reminds us that we must make a choice for Christ. We must choose to live out our baptismal commitment by dying to self so that we might rise with Christ. This is the only way to new life. Each choice we make—no matter how small and seemingly insignificant—truly does take us either closer to God and each other or farther away. The gospel invites us to think of our everyday choices as having consequences—eternal life. This coming week we will exercise our most fundamental right as Americans, to vote. I encourage everyone to make their opinions known by voting. It is not enough to just show up and vote. We must take time to learn about the candidates, the issues, and the platforms in order to vote according to our informed conscience. Do not just listen to the pundits and talking heads, consult several sources so that your vote is an extension of your fundamental beliefs. Voting is one way in which we strive to serve the common good and not simply the politically correct. Be bold! Vote this Tuesday. The month of November is a time when we reflect on the church’s
teaching regarding the Communion of Saints and our need to pray for the repose of the souls of all the Faithful Departed. When we offer Mass Intentions for our beloved dead we remind ourselves of the need we have to pray for the repose of their soul and to be thankful for their presence in our lives. We remember those women and men who have served our country faithfully and are recognized as veterans. Thank a Veteran for the freedom we enjoy. November is also the month when, as Americans, we remember to give thanks for the abundance we have in our lives. We are a very blessed people. Sometimes we forget that fact. This is a reminder to give thanks to God, the source of our blessings. I ask you to be mindful of those items needed for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Together we can make a difference Welcome to those family members who joined us in worship as they remember their loved one who died during the past year. It is important that we remember to pray for the repose of the soul of all those who have gone before us especially those in the past 12 months. Many thanks to our Lazarus Ministers and our Bereavement Facilitators for their faithful ministry here in our parish. Thanks to those who have completed and returned their commitment card for our increased offertory program. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

These past weeks we have had discussion with you about our Increased Offertory “For it is in Giving that We Receive.” Our parish has so much to offer to those in Monmouth County and beyond. We are a beacon of hope for those in need, for those suffering, for those who are hungry, searching, and need our prayers and assistance in a multitude of ways. We are also there for our parish family through the administration of the sacraments, the celebration of Mass, and the Holy Eucharist. How blessed we are to be able to serve so many in our parish and community! We are called by God to continue to advance our mission and to build up God’s Kingdom here in Colts Neck. There are so many more people who need our assistance. There is so much more work to be done. The reality is that we will always need resources to do God’s work. Until the needy are clothed, the hungry are fed, and the Gospel is spread to the ends of the earth, we will need resources. Many of you have already submitted your Commitment Card to the church and have committed your offertory support to continue to advance our parish mission. Thank you! Many of you have not yet submitted your commitment card. Our goal through this initiative is 100% participation from our parish community. Please turn in your Commitment Card this week if you have not already done so. Please pray for our parish. Please become involved in the life of our parish by joining a ministry to help serve those in need. The Parish of Saint Mary is a wonderful parish because of YOU and what each one of you make of it! I thank you for your generosity and am humbled by your sacrifice. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. May the Lord continue to bless us and the work we are doing!

Thanksgiving Baskets Collection November 10 9 am - 3 pm Madonna Hall cards, coins and stamps Semper Paratus The next meeting of the Martha Mary Guild is scheduled for 14 November 2018. Acknowledging Veterans Day during the month of November has become a tradition for the Guild and this year we will focus on the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is a Civilian auxiliary with a role in Search and Rescue, Disaster relief, Recreational Boating Safety, Marine Environmental Safety and Protection. It is a part of the Department of Homeland Security, This Veterans Day program will be presented by two distinguished members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Catherine Dudley joined the USCG Auxiliary in October 1997 after taking an Auxiliary boating class where she learned how much she really did not know about safe boating. She is presently Flotilla Secretary and Flotilla Public Education officer. Vincent Mancino has been in the USCG Auxiliary for forty years. He too joined the Auxiliary after buying a boat. He is currently the Finance Officer for Flotilla 26, which is chartered in Monmouth Beach. This Auxiliary provides an important service to our community and beyond, along our East Coast. Join us for this special program: all are invited. Come to the Spiritual Center Chapel to pray the rosary at 11:30 a.m. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) will follow, with refreshments provided by the Guild, and the Veterans Day tribute will begin around 12:30. The Guild thanks all the generous members that brought socks to the Oct. meeting for Holiday Express and asks that you kindly bring canned goods for the homeless to the Nov. meeting. Thank you again for your generosity!

“Light Up a Memory” “Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s and is now in its 11th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in The Parish of Saint Mary Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation. There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 15, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 6.
