Giving Thanks The origins of our Thanksgiving holiday can be traced back to long before the “first Thanksgiving”.

Early cultures such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans had periodic feasts and festivals which paid tribute to their gods after a bountiful harvest.

The Jewish holiday of Sukkot, commonly known as the “Feast of Gathering” or “Feast of Tabernacles” is a week-long celebration in late September / early October, which marked the end of harvest time and also serves to remind the Jewish people of the Israelite’s Exodus from Egypt, and their reliance on God for their journey, and to give thanks to the Lord for his goodness.

The Native Americans also celebrated harvest time, and both the Separatist and Puritan settlers brought traditions of fasting in times of tribulation or penitence and feasting in times of abundance to give thanks to God. Saint Cecilia The feast day of Saint Cecilia, virgin and martyr, is celebrated on November 22. She was married to a nobleman, Valerian, and having devoted her life to God, sang to the Lord during her nuptials. She retained her virginity, having instructed her new husband to go and be baptized, after which he returned to find Cecilia in the midst of an angel, adorning her with roses and lilies. She often preached, converting many to Christianity, and consistently sang songs of praise to God (making her the patroness of musicians).

She was martyred under the reign of Roman prefect Almachius in the 2nd century AD. The common story is that an executioner struck her neck three times, and she lived for three days afterward, continuing to preach, and praise the Lord.

Confirmation Prep Grades 7 & 8 Next few sessions The infancy narratives are arguably the most beautiful and intriguing passages in the Gospels. Within these narratives we encounter the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in miniature.

Journey with us as Dr. Jim Bridges guides us through an exploration of the compositions casting light on their theological purpose. From the child in the manger to the Magi’s search for the infant Jesus, the evangelists create two unique narratives that reveal the importance of Jesus of Nazareth. Come experience the narratives that captured our imagination for nearly 2000 years.

The Tuesday 2nd grade classes will participate as part of class. Those Summer Intensive students needing review are welcome.

It will only last about 15 minutes.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. On this second-to-last Sunday of the liturgical year we begin to play out the last climactic rhythm of the paschal mystery. This Sunday we consider the end of this world as we know it—dying. Next Sunday we consider the triumph of Christ and what comes to all of us who live in conformity with the Word— everlasting life. Dying and rising. This is what the whole liturgical year is about. This is what the whole Christian mystery is about. There is alot at stake in this gospel—it’s not a future for our progeny but for ourselves. We have been faced with a choice throughout our journey during this past liturgical year: to be rooted in this world or in the words of Jesus.

Our choices do make a difference.

The Colts Neck Reformed Church will be hosting this year’s Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service on Tuesday Evening, November 20 at 7:30 pm. Deacon John will be the homilist.

Please join us for Mass on Thanksgiving Day at 9 am. It is important for us to take time to give thanks and praise to God for all the blessings in our life. Please consult the bulletin for details Next weekend the Universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King, the final weekend of our liturgical year. I am very grateful to all those who assist in preparing our Worship. The Sacred Liturgy is the most important part of parish life. It is our fundamental experience of Christ in the Eucharist that gives purpose to every other aspect of our common life as a parish. This

precious gift of God which we have in the Eucharist enables us to work for justice in our world and to be instruments of mercy and forgiveness.

We will need to call forth additional parishioners to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion as well as Altar Servers. These ministries are a tremendous service to our parish. Let us pray that more parishioners will prayerfully discern this participation and that more parents will responsibly support their children in learning more about becoming altar servers.

Many thanks to all those who have participated in our Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Poor & Needy. Our parish response continues to grow each year. May we strive to see the face of Jesus in all, especially the poor and needy.

Participation in our Fall Clean up is necessary in order to help manage our 25 acre campus that is our spiritual home. The details are outlined in the bulletin. Many hands make lighter work.

Please mark your calendars for Sunday, 9 December 2018. This is the date for the Advent Penance & Reconciliation Service. It is a time when we will welcome a new group of children to this sacrament. It is also a time for us to come together in preparation for the great Solemnity of Christmas. I am grateful to all of the priests who serve as confessors for this service. During these days, please allow some extra time when driving around town, especially the weekends, as some businesses experience high traffic and a swell of patrons. December 16, 2018 Hannah de Groot, a senior at Penn State University and active parishioner is very involved in Penn State's THON-- a 46-hour dance marathon, held in February, benefitting childhood cancer. The clothes will be processed by A&E Clothing Corporation which specializes in processing used clothing and goods based on the weight of the contribution.

“Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s and is now in its 11th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in The Parish of Saint Mary Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation.

Christmas Sponsor-A-Family Purchase gifts for a family. You select the size of the family you wish to sponsor (2-6 people). Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family.
