This urging to be ready for Christ's return is not intended to frighten us, but rather to focus our attention on the things that matter. Wisdom lies in seeking God in all things. With the Psalmist, the wise person prays, "My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God" (Psalm 63:2b). Christ's way is not hidden from us, as though we are playing a game of hide and seek. It is "readily perceived" (Wisdom 6:12) by all who love God. We know the way through the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, Christ's great command to wash one another's feet, to love and serve with glad hearts. To act accordingly is to be wise, and those who are wise will be ready.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We rarely, if ever, view our daily Christian living in light of the final coming of Christ. But his final coming is, in fact, the context which gives meaning to our daily behavior and our ongoing hope. If we are not ready at the Second Coming of Christ (with its accompanying judgment), we can not count on anyone else to cover for us. We are provided now with all we need (for example, wisdom, invitation to vigilance, warnings about preparedness) to be ready when Christ comes. The real challenge is that we do not think of this as merely a future event that will not happen in our own lifetime.

We don’t know when Christ will come again!

And so Christian living requires that we act each day as if this were the day when our Bridegroom will come and invite us to the feast.

Many thanks to all those who assisted with the Mass of Remembrance. The Lazarus Ministry serves our parishioners well and many have commented how comforted they feel coming here to our parish for the Rites of Christian Burial. The Bereavement Ministry likewise offers opportunities for those seeking support following the death of a loved one. These ministries are possible due to the Stewardship of Time and Talent of those directly involved and the Stewardship of Treasure that supports our parish so that we can share these beautiful facilities for a myriad of uses. Let us continue to pray regularly for the repose of all the Holy Souls, especially during this month of November when the Universal Church focuses on All Saints and All Souls.

Preparations are being made for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, the Advent Tree of Love, Adopt-a-Family Christmas Outreach,

and the Christmas Food Drive. Please consult the bulletin and e-blasts for more detailed information. We have been so very blessed and it is an important faith response to share not only from our abundance but also from our want. Thank you for remembering the poor and needy of our time and showing them that the Roman Catholic Church continues to be the world’s largest single deliverer of charitable services and goods. That is something that all of us can be proud to share, especially with some of the more skeptical folks in our community and workplaces. May God continue to direct all of our efforts.

As the leaves continue to fall and the daylight becomes shorter we know that Fall is passing and Winter draws near. Take the opportunity to spend some time outdoors before the weather becomes less pleasant. Last week our country observed Veteran’s Day. Our parish will gather Sunday, 26 November at the 12:00 noon Mass to thank God for the presence and ministry of Deacon Fred Sorrentino for his faithful service to our parish community.

Deacon Fred is retiring from public ministry in accord with the Church’s Canon Law and the Statures of the Diocese of Trenton. He and his family are re-locating to South Jersey where they will be in closer proximity to other family members. Just a reminder to plan your Thanksgiving Day celebration to begin with the celebration of Mass here in our parish church.

Thanking God for the many and varied blessings we have is a fitting way to begin our civic observance.

Diocesan Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception held Saturday, November 4, 2017 Two bus departed St Mary Parish headed for Washington DC, at 6 am on Nov 4th to meet up with hundreds of other pilgrims from the Diocese of Trenton. Our buses included 3 priests and 88 parishioners, family and friends (91 in total) from the following parishes: St Mary, St Gabriel, St Catharine, St Benedicts, St Clement, St John Newman, St James, St Aloysius, St Veronica, Holy Innocents, & St Rose of Lima. Those who made the pilgrimage prayed morning and evening prayers and the rosary on the bus, then upon their arrival were greeted by Bishop O’Connell. All were invited to visit the seventy two chapels and statues in the Great Upper Church and on the Crypt Level of the Basilica. The day began with a gathering in the Great Upper Church for the Angelus, Tour of Faith & the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. Children had their Pilgrim Passports stamped at some of the chapels, the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation was available as well as talks with the Bishop and the Celebration of the Eucharist with our Bishop & priests in attendance at 3 pm.

All materials are provided. Groups meet at the parish or in your home depending on each facilitator’s schedule.

No fee. Materials available at Agape & on the parish website.

Groups meet once a week during the weeks of Advent: Nov. 27th, Dec.4th, Dec. 11th, and Dec. 18th.

HALLOWEEN HALLS

a spooktackular community building event for all!

So many Trick-or-Treaters (about 60 families) were in attendance at this year’s Halloween Halls enjoying the festivities or ganized by par ish teens. Par ticipants and families met in front of the church after Mass and paraded along the church building to the courtyard. Thirty-six (36) rooms/tables were decorated by parishioners & friends throughout the parish buildings.

Treats were provided by decorators to the children. Crafts, a science experiment, All Hallows Eve/All Saints/All Soul’s Day information and activities were available to all & donated baked items and other refreshments were enjoyed in the Parish Hall. Games were in Madonna Hall.

A special Thank you to Dan and Theresa Eng, youth committee chairs. The event by far was the biggest ever and very well organized. What a phenomenal job.

Thank you for stepping up and taking on this challenge. This year we had 77 youth and adult volunteers helping with the following jobs: kitchen set-up, refreshments, decorating a room / table, hand out treats to participants, event set up, event break-down, game leaders, craft table leaders, building decoration, face painting, tattoos, Mass sign-ups, hall monitors and photographers. Thank you to the youth/families who donated delicious home made treats and refreshments. Pictures from the event can be viewed on the parish website under community building events. “Light Up a Memory” “Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary and is now in its 10th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in St. Mary’s Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation.

There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 16, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir.

Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 7.

Christmas Outreach Opportunities:

Tree of Love – Purchase individual gift items for individuals from tags that are placed on the Christmas Tree of Love in the gathering space.

The Tree will be up the weekend before Thanksgiving Nov 18/19.

Christmas Sponsor-A-Family This program adopts families from Aslan Youth Ministries, The Center in Asbury Park, Family Resource Associates and the Highpoint School.

The goal is to sponsor families in need at Christmas.

Purchase gifts for a family. You select the size of the family you wish to sponsor (2-6 people).

Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family. Gifts per person are usually a value of $50 and based on a list of needed items prepared by the family.

If you, your family, your neighbors, coworkers, or friends would like to sponsor a family in need this holiday season.
