Music in the Church According to Saint Athansius Music is integral to the life of the Church. Profound, accurate liturgy and the best of music are but 2 of the keystones of a solid foundation to Mass (the Eucharist not to be excluded, of course) Saint Athansius writes: Think of a musician tuning his lyre. By his skill, he adjusts high notes to low and intermediate notes to the rest, and produces a series of harmonies. So, too, the wisdom of God holds the world like a lyre and joins things in the air to those on earth, and things in heaven to those in the air, and brings each part into harmony with the whole. By his decree and will, he regulates them all to produce the beauty and harmony of a single, well-ordered universe. (St. Athanasius, Oratio contra gentes, 42; PG 25, 83-86) He writes further, when speaking of a choir: To illustrate this profound mystery, let us take the example of a choir of many singers. A choir is composed of a variety of men, women, and children, of both old and young. Under the direction of one conductor, each sings in the way that is natural for him: men with men’s voices, boys with boys’ voices, old people with old voices, young people with young voices. Yet all of them produce a single harmony. . . . Although this is only a poor comparison, it gives some idea of how the whole universe is governed. The Word of God has but to give a gesture of command and everything falls into place; each creature performs its own proper function, and all together constitute one single harmonious order. (St. Athanasius, Oratio contra gentes, 43; PG 25, 86-87)

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time.

A child’s handmade birthday card to Mom is as precious to her as Dad’s gift of jewelry. It is not the size of the gift which measures its value but the depth of the self-gift from which it comes. Placing ourselves at the center of worldly values--status, clothes, seats of honor, power, wealth---gains us condemnation. Surrendering ourselves as disciples at the service of others and living a life of self-giving gains us salvation. But how easily we are fooled about where our hearts truly lie! We might look at the widow’s giving all she had as a foreshadowing of Jesus giving his all on the cross. The good news is that when we surrender our all there is a constant reversal in the order of things: oppressed to protected; beneficiary to benefactor; master to servant; least to greatest; last to first; condemnation to salvation; poverty to surplus; death to life.

When we give our all we never run out. God is the one who is always there to provide.

During the month of November we reflect on the Communion of Saints and All the Holy Souls who have gone before us. We pray that through the intercession of the Holy Ones our prayers might be answered. We pray for the repose of all the Holy Souls who are no longer with us in this world as they continue their journey toward the Heavenly realm. This is the hope and promise of all who have been baptized.

The paschal mystery reminds us that if we rely on ourselves and amass our own treasures, we will lose everything. If we surrender ourselves in loving self-sacrifice, we gain everything.

The choice is ours. Discipleship does not mean that we necessarily do big and heroic things. It does mean that we do everything and meet whatever challenges come our way with hearts set right---we give of ourselves for the good of others.

The Increased Offertory Commitment Cards continue to be returned. Many thanks to all those who have returned their card. Some of these cards have included very thoughtful and encouraging notes. Those who have not done so at this time are encouraged to do so at this time. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.

The annual Thanksgiving Ecumenical Prayer Service will be hosted by the Colts Neck Reformed Church Community. Tuesday, 20 November at 7:30 pm.

Deacon John will be the homilist this year. Our parish will gather for the Eucharist on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 am in the church.

What a great way to begin a day of thanksgiving by receiving Holy Communion.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Wednesday, November 14 at 10 am Room 11 This month the Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet on November 14 in room 11 at 10 a.m. We are making caps and scarves for Holiday Express and ask members to bring the items at that time. We will continue to accept caps and scarves until December 2. New members are always welcome and we look forward to seeing everyone on the 14th.

“Light Up a Memory” “Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s and is now in its 11th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in The Parish of Saint Mary Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation.

There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 15, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided

by St. Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 6.

Semper Paratus The next meeting of the Martha Mary Guild is scheduled for 14 November 2018. Acknowledging Veterans Day during the month of November has become a tradition for the Guild and this year we will focus on the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is a Civilian auxiliary with a role in Search and Rescue, Disaster relief, Recreational Boating Safety, Marine Environmental Safety and Protection. It is a part of the Department of Homeland Security, The Auxiliary contributes over 4-5 million hours of service each year and completed nearly 500,000 missions of service to support the Coast Guard. Every year Auxiliarists help to save approximately 500 lives, assist 15,000 distressed boaters, conduct over 150,000 safety examinations of recreational vessels and provide boater safety instruction to over 500,000 students. In total the Coast Guard Auxiliary saves taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

This Veterans Day program will be presented by two distinguished members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Catherine Dudley joined the USCG Auxiliary in October 1997 after taking an Auxiliary boating class where she learned how much she really did not know about safe boating. She is presently Flotilla Secretary and Flotilla Public Education officer. As a retired middle school teacher, Catherine likes working in the Public Education program. The flotilla works with high school students, has a program in 6 elementary schools, and also conducts many classes for the public.

Vincent Mancino has been in the USCG Auxiliary for forty years. He too joined the Auxiliary after buying a boat. He is currently the Finance Officer for Flotilla 26, which is chartered in Monmouth Beach. He has served as Flotilla Commander for two years, as well as other positions over the years. At the Division level, centered at the Sandy Hook Coast Guard Station, he has served as Division Staff Finance Officer for nine years, and Human Resource Officer for eighteen years. This Auxiliary provides an important service to our community and beyond, along our East Coast.

Join us for this special program: all are invited. Come to the Spiritual Center Chapel to pray the rosary at 11:30 a.m. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) will follow, with refreshments provided by the Guild, and the Veterans Day tribute will begin around 12:30.

The Guild thanks all the generous members that brought socks to the Oct. meeting for Holiday Express and asks that you kindly bring canned goods for the homeless to the Nov. meeting. Thank you again for your generosity!

Christmas Sponsor-A-Family Purchase gifts for a family. You select the size of the family you wish to sponsor (2-6 people). Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family. Gifts per person are usually a value of $50 and based on a list of needed items prepared by the family. This program adopts families from Aslan Youth Ministries, The Center in Asbury Park, Family Resource Associates and the Highpoint School. The goal is to sponsor families in need at Christmas. Due to lack of freezer space we ask for monetary donations towards the purchase of turkeys. Therefore, in lieu of donating turkeys or gift cards, please make your check payable to “The Parish of Saint Mary” & put ‘Thanksgiving Food Drive’ in the memo section.

Your contribution will be used for turkeys or additional canned goods if needed.

Help us exceed last year's donations of 145 bags of groceries and 130 turkeys to greater serve the needs of the community at large.
